Using a generalized Gaussian beam decomposition method we determine the propagation of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam that has passed through a thin nonlinear optical Kerr medium. The orbital angular momentum per photon of the beam is found to be conserved while the component beams change. As an illustration of applications, we propose and demonstrate a z-scan experiment using an $LG_0^1$ beam and a dye-doped polymer film.
Using a variational approach, we obtain the self-focusing critical power for a single and for any number of interacting Laguerre-Gauss beams propagating in a Kerr nonlinear optical medium. As is known, the critical power for freely propagating higher-order modes is always greater than that of the fundamental Gaussian mode. Here, we generalize that result for an arbitrary incoherent superposition of Laguerre-Gauss beams, adding interactions between them. This leads to a vast and rich spectrum of self-focusing phenomena, which is absent in the single-beam case. Specifically, we find that interac…

We demonstrate optical limiting using the self-lensing effect of a higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian beam in a thin dye-doped polymer sample, which we find is consistent with our model using Gaussian decomposition. The peak phase shift in the sample required for limiting is smaller than for a fundamental Gaussian beam with the added flexibility that the nonlinear medium can be placed either in front of or behind the beam focus.
In order to maximize the transversal magneto-optic Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of a Au/Co/Au structure, we propose a method to obtain the optimum thickness values. A criteria based on preserving good plasmonic properties has been included as part of this method. Using the theoretical prediction, we grew Au/Co/Au trilayers and perform optical andMO characterization using the Kretschmann configuration. The results admit very easy interpretation in terms of the interaction between the magneto-optical and plasmonic properties dictating the optimal thicknesses of the structure. Moreover, we have grown and…
The properties of electron round lenses produced by the ponderomotive potential are investigated in geometrical optics. The potential proportional to the intensity distribution of a focused first-order Bessel or Laguerre-Gaussian beam is exploited to produce an electron round lens and a third-order spherical aberration corrector. Several formulas for the focal length and spherical aberration coefficients in the thin-lens approximation are derived to set the lens properties and associated light beam parameters. When the mode field of the optical beam is small, the electron trajectory calculatio…

Bright-soliton frequency comb generation in a thin-film silicon nitride (SiN) microresonator at optical telecommunication wavelengths is numerically demonstrated using our recently developed approach for dispersion-engineering by virtue of coupling-dispersion between two coupled microresonators. By coupling two identical resonators through an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder structure, sinusoidal splitting of the resonance frequencies can be achieved. This enables the engineering of the dispersion of the resulting modes of the coupled structure. Using this approach, anomalous dispersion of the resonant…
Propagation of coherent light in a Kerr nonlinear medium can be mapped onto a flow of an equivalent fluid. Here we use this mapping to model the conditions in the vicinity of a rotating black hole as a Laguerre-Gauss vortex beam. We describe weak fluctuations of the phase and amplitude of the electric field by wave equations in curved space, with a metric that is similar to the Kerr metric. We find the positions of event horizons and ergoregion boundaries, and the conditions for the onset of superradiance, which are simultaneously the conditions for a resonance in the analogue Hawking radiatio…
A compact Kerr-lens mode-locked thin-disk oscillator delivering 110 MW output peak power, the highest among all oscillators, is reported. A pulse train with a repetition rate of 14 MHz carries 115 fs long, 14.4 uJ pulses resulting in 202 W of average power. This compact, simple, and stable oscillator is a suitable driver and an important milestone for further high harmonics generation and the development of extreme ultraviolet transportable frequency comb sources.
Turing patterns in self-focussing nonlinear optical cavities pumped by beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) $m$ are shown to rotate with an angular velocity $ω= 2m/R^2$ on rings of radii $R$. We verify this prediction in 1D models on a ring and for 2D Laguerre-Gaussian and top-hat pumps with OAM. Full control over the angular velocity of the pattern in the range $- 2m/R^2 \le ω\le 2m/R^2$ is obtained by using cylindrical vector beam pumps that consist of orthogonally polarized eigenmodes with equal and opposite OAM. Using Poincaré beams that consist of orthogonally polarized eigenmode…

We investigate nonlinear transmission in a layered structure consisting of a slab of positive index material (PIM) with Kerr-type nonlinearity and a sub-wavelength layer of linear negative index material (NIM) sandwiched between semi-infinite linear dielectrics. We find that a thin layer of NIM leads to significant changes in the hysteresis width when the nonlinear slab is illuminated at an angle near that of total internal reflection. Unidirectional diode-like transmission with enhanced operational range is demonstrated. These results may be useful for NIMs characterization and for designing …
The transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in magnetite-based magneto-plasmonic crystals is studied experimentally and theoretically. We analyze angle-resolved TMOKE spectra from two types of structures where noble metallic stripes are incorporated inside a thin magnetite film or located on top of a homogeneous film. A multiple wide band enhancement of the TMOKE signal in transmission is demonstrated. The complex dielectric permittivity and gyration are experimentally determined using the ellipsometry technique as well as Faraday rotation and ellipticity measurements. The obtained para…
We study the ultrafast Kerr effect and high-harmonic generation in type-II superconductors by formulating a new model for a time-varying electromagnetic pulse normally incident on a thin-film superconductor. It is found that type-II superconductors exhibit exceptionally large $χ^{(3)}$ due to the progressive destruction of Cooper pairs, and display high-harmonic generation at low incident intensities, and the highest nonlinear susceptibility of all known materials in the THz regime. Our theory opens up new avenues for accessible analytical and numerical studies of the ultrafast dynamics of sup…
By studying the rotations of the polarization of light propagating in right and left handed films, with emphasis on the transmission (Faraday effect) and reflec- tions (Kerr effect) of light and through the use of complex values representing the rotations, it can be shown that the real portions of the complex angle of Faraday and Kerr rotations are odd functions with respect to the refractive index n and that the respective imaginary portions of the angles are an even function of n. Multiple reflections within the medium lead to the maximums of the real portions of Faraday and Kerr effects to …
A high-sensitive DC Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) apparatus is described in this letter. Via detailed analysis on several dominating noise sources, we have proposed solutions that significantly lower the MOKE noise, and a sensitivity of $1.5\times10^{-7} \text{rad}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ is achieved with long-term stability. The sensitivity of the apparatus is tested by measuring a wedge-shaped Ni thin film on $\text{SiO}_2$ with Ni thickness varying from 0 to 3 nm. A noise floor of $1.5\times10^{-8}$ rad is demonstrated. The possibility of further improving sensitivity to $10^{-9}$ rad via ap…
Magnetic and spintronic media have offered fundamental scientific subjects and technological applications. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy provides the most accessible platform to study the dynamics of spins, magnetic quasi-particles, and domain walls. However, in the research of nanoscale spin textures and state-of-the-art spintronic devices, optical techniques are generally restricted by the extremely weak magneto-optical activity and diffraction limit. Highly sophisticated, expensive electron microscopy and scanning probe methods thus have come to the forefront. Here, we show th…
Microresonator Kerr frequency combs, which rely on third-order nonlinearity ($χ^{(3)}$), are of great interest for a wide range of applications including optical clocks, pulse shaping, spectroscopy, telecommunications, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and quantum information processing. Many of these applications require further spectral and temporal control of the generated frequency comb signal, which is typically accomplished using additional photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity ($χ^{(2)}$). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete off-ch…
We investigate the nonlinear optical properties of BiOBr nanoflakes, a novel two-dimensional (2D) layered material from the Bismuth oxyhalide family. We measure the nonlinear absorption and Kerr nonlinearity of BiOBr nanoflakes at both 800 nm and 1550 nm via the Z scan technique. We observe a large nonlinear absorption coefficient beta = 10^-7 m/W as well as a large Kerr coefficient n2 = 10^-14 m^2/W. We also observe strong dispersion in n2, with it reversing sign from negative to positive as the wavelength varies from 800 nm to 1550 nm. In addition, we characterize the thickness-dependence of…
We present a novel procedure to solve the Schrödinger equation, which in optics is the paraxial wave equation, with an initial multisingular vortex Gaussian beam. This initial condition has a number of singularities in a plane transversal to propagation embedded in a Gaussian beam. We use the scattering modes, which are solutions of the paraxial wave equation that can be combined straightforwardly to express the initial condition and therefore permit to solve the problem. To construct the scattering modes one needs to obtain a particular set of polynomials, which play an analogous role than La…
