The decay of inner-shell vacancy in an atom through radiative and non-radiative transitions leads to final charged ions. The de-excitation decay of 3s, 3p and 3d vacancies in Kr atoms are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulation method. The vacancy cascade pathway resulted from the de-excitation decay of deep core hole in 3s subshell in Kr atoms is discussed. The generation of spectator vacancies during the vacancy cascade development gives rise to Auger satellite spectra. The last transitions of the de-excitation decay of 3s, 3p and 3d holes lead to specific charged ions. Dirac-Fock-Slater wave functions are adapted to calculate radiative and non-radiative transition probabilities. The intensity of Kr^{4+} ions are high for 3s hole state, whereas Kr^{3+} and Kr^{2+} ions have highest intensities for 3p and 3d hole states, respectively. The present results of ion charge state distributions agree well with the experimental data.
Considering the photoionization of Ar@C60, we predict resonant femtosecond decays of both Ar and C60 vacancies through the continua of atom-fullerene hybrid final states. The resulting resonances emerge from the interference between simultaneous autoionizing and intercoulombic decay (ICD) processes. For Ar 3s-->np excitations, these resonances are far stronger than the Ar-to-C60 resonant ICDs, while for C60 excitations they are strikingly larger than the corresponding Auger features. The results indicate the power of hybridization to enhance decay rates, and modify lifetimes and line profiles.
This is a sequel to an earlier article on the theory of angular correlation for double photoionization. Here we consider the two-step double photoionization of a rare gas atom under the influence of a polarized photon beam described by appropriate Stokes parameters. Cylindrical mirror analysers (CMA) are used to detect the outgoing electrons. Theoretical values of the correlation functions are obtained for linearly polarized light. Two different situations is handled. Once, the value of the correlation function is obtained keeping the photo-electron in a fixed direction. The other case the dir…
The theory of resonant Auger decay of atoms in a high intensity coherent X-ray pulse is presented. The theory includes the coupling between the ground state and the resonance due to an intense X-ray pulse, taking into account the decay of the resonance and the direct photoionization of the ground state, both populating the final ionic states coherently. The theory also considers the impact of the direct photoionization of the resonance state itself which typically populates highly-excited ionic states. The combined action of the resonant decay and of the direct ionization of the ground state i…
We investigate K-shell ionization of N$_2$ at 40 keV photon energy. Using a COLTRIMS reaction microscope we determine the vector momenta of the photoelectron, the Auger electron and both N$^+$ fragments. These fully differential data show that the dissociation process of the N$_2^{2+}$ ion is significantly modified not only by the recoil momentum of the photoelectron, but also by the photon momentum and the momentum of the emitted Auger electron. We find that the recoil energy introduced by the photon and the photoelectron momentum is partitioned with a ratio of approximately 30/70 between the…
We show, with an example of Na_92, that for jellium metal clusters the interference of fast electron-waves emitted from equivalent sites on the cluster edge produces monochromatic oscillations in all photoionization observables as a function of the photoelectron momentum; the effect is equivalent to the usual dispersion phenomenon. In dealing with formalisms, a serious consequence of the inadequacy of self-interaction corrected local density-functional theory in correctly accounting for the exchange interaction is identified. We also briefly discuss the influence of the ionicity of the residua…
In this paper we have tried to establish a theory for angular correlation between the photo- and Auger electrons in the two-step double photoionization of a rare gas atom. The basic finding of this paper is that a general theoretical expression for the angular correlation function is established in the problem of double photoionization of atoms in the presence of linearly polarized monochromatic light. We consider the case of a xenon atom and the incident light is of (94.5 eV) with arbitrary linear polarization. The theoretical results are compared with the experiments done by K(\ddot{a} )mmer…
Multiple electron processes occur widely in atoms, molecules, clusters, and condensed matters when they are interacting with energetic particles or intense laser fields. In this work, a unified and accurate theoretical formalism is proposed on the direct multielectron processes of atoms including the multiple Auger decay and multiple ionization by an impact of an energetic electron or a photon based on the atomic collision theory described by a correlated many-body Green's function. Such a practical treatment is made possible due to different coherence features of the particles (matter waves) …
Inter-Coulombic decay (ICD) resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C60 endofullerene molecule are calculated using a perturbative density functional theory (DFT) method. This is the first ICD study of an open shell atom in a fullerene cage. Three classes of resonances are probed: (i) Cl inner vacancies decaying through C60 outer continua, (ii) C60 inner vacancies decaying through Cl outer continua, and (iii) inner vacancies of either system decaying through the continua of Cl-C60 hybrid levels, the hybrid Auger-ICD resonances. Comparisons with Ar@C60 results reveal that the properties of hybr…
We consider the process of double photoionization (DPI) in a rare gas atom as a two-step process, namely (i) photoionization in an inner shell followed by (ii) the emission of an Auger electron from an outer shell. An angular correlation function for the two emitted electrons is defined by analogy with the theory of angular correlation in nuclear physics. An expression is obtained for this angular correlation function by a statistical method which makes use of the density and efficiency operators. The latter takes care of the attenuation of the probability of detection of an electrons due to t…
Photoionization of an atom in the presence of a neighboring atom of different species is studied. The latter first undergoes resonant photoexcitation, leading to an autoionizing state of the diatomic system. Afterwards, the excitation energy is transferred radiationlessly via a two-center Auger process to the other atom, causing its ionization. Assuming a fixed internuclear distance, it has been predicted theoretically that this indirect ionization pathway can strongly dominate over the direct photoionization. Here, we extend the theory of resonant two-center photoionization by including the n…
Relative cross sections for $m$-fold photoionization ($m=1,\ldots,5$) of Fe$^{3+}$ by single photon absorption were measured employing the photon-ion merged-beams setup PIPE at the PETRA III synchrotron light source operated at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The photon energies used spanned the range of $680-950\,\mathrm{eV}$, covering both the photoexcitation resonances from the $2p$ and $2s$ shells as well as the direct ionization from both shells. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations were performed to simulate the total photoexcitation spectra. Good agreement was found with…
We report on the design and performance of a double-sided coincidence velocity map imaging spectrometer optimized for electron-ion and ion-ion coincidence experiments studying inner-shell photoionization of gas-phase molecules with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The apparatus employs two microchannel plate detectors equipped with delay-line anodes for coincident, time- and position-resolved detection of photo- and Auger electrons with kinetic energies up to 300\,eV on one side of the spectrometer and photoions up to 25\,eV per unit charge on the opposite side. We demonstrate its capabilitie…
We theoretically study orbital alignment in x-ray-ionized atoms and ions, based on improved electronic-structure calculations starting from the Hartree-Fock-Slater model. We employ first-order many-body perturbation theory to improve the Hartree-Fock-Slater calculations and show that the use of first-order-corrected energies yields significantly better transition energies than originally obtained. The improved electronic-structure calculations enable us also to compute individual state-to-state cross sections and transition rates and, thus, to investigate orbital alignment induced by linearly …
The photoionization of xenon atoms in the 70-100 eV range reveals several fascinating physical phenomena such as a giant resonance induced by the dynamic rearrangement of the electron cloud after photon absorption, an anomalous branching ratio between intermediate Xe$^+$ states separated by the spin-orbit interaction and multiple Auger decay processes. These phenomena have been studied in the past, using in particular synchrotron radiation, but without access to real-time dynamics. Here, we study the dynamics of Xe 4d photoionization on its natural time scale combining attosecond interferometr…
Triple photoionization of Xe3+, Xe4+ and Xe5+ ions has been studied in the energy range 670-750 eV, including the 3d ionization threshold. The photon-ion merged-beam technique was used at a synchrotron light source to measure the absolute photoionization cross sections. These cross sections exhibit a progressively larger number of sharp resonances as the ion charge state is increased. This clearly visualizes the re-ordering of the $ε$f continuum into a regular series of (bound) Rydberg orbitals as the ionic core becomes more attractive. The energies and strengths of the resonances are extracte…
Single, double, and triple ionization of the C+ ion by a single photon have been investigated in the energy range 286 to 326 eV around the K-shell single-ionization threshold at an unprecedented level of detail. At energy resolutions as low as 12 meV, corresponding to a resolving power of 24000, natural linewidths of the most prominent resonances could be determined. From the measurement of absolute cross sections, oscillator strengths, Einstein coefficients, multi-electron Auger decay rates and other transition parameters of the main K-shell excitation and decay processes are derived. The cro…
We present $R$-matrix calculations of photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections across the K-edge of Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca ions with more than 10 electrons. The calculations include the effects of radiative and Auger damping by means of an optical potential. The wave functions are constructed from single-electron orbital bases obtained using a Thomas--Fermi--Dirac statistical model potential. Configuration interaction is considered among all states up to $n=3$. The damping processes affect the resonances converging to the K-thresholds causing them to display symmetric profiles of cons…
Measuring and controlling the ionization dynamics by intense laser fields has recently led to important breakthroughs, from the investigation of tunneling time delays to attosecond molecular imaging by electron holography. In these experiments, extracting the subtle influence of the ionic potential on the departing electrons is of capital importance, and often challenging. Here we show that molecular chirality naturally provides a solution to this issue by breaking the symmetry of the photoionization process along the laser propagation direction. Using counter-rotating bicircular bichromatic l…
We present R-matrix calculations of photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections across the K edge of the Li-like to Ca-like ions stages of Ni. Level-resolved, Breit-Pauli calculations were performed for the Li-like to Na-like stages. Term-resolved calculations, which include the mass-velocity and Darwin relativistic corrections, were performed for the Mg-like to Ca-like ion stages. This data set is extended up to Fe-like Ni using the distorted wave approximation as implemented by AUTOSTRUCTURE. The R-matrix calculations include the effects of radiative and Auger dampings by means of an …
Using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source, we have measured relative cross sections for single and up to five-fold photoionization of Fe$^{2+}$ ions in the energy range 690--920 eV. This range contains thresholds and resonances associated with ionization and excitation of $2p$ and $2s$ electrons. Calculations were performed to simulate the total absorption spectra. The theoretical results show very good agreement with the experimental data, if overall energy shifts of up to 2.5 eV are applied to the calculated resonance positions and assumptions are made about t…
Photoionization cross sections and partial ion yields of Xe and XeF$_2$ from Xe 3d$_{5/2}$, Xe 3d$_{3/2}$, and F 1s subshells in the 660--740 eV range are compared to explore effects of the F ligands. The Xe 3d - $ε$f continuum shape resonances dominate the photoionization cross sections of both the atom and molecule, but prominent resonances appear in the XeF$_2$ cross section due to nominal excitation of Xe 3d and F 1s electrons to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), a delocalized anti-bonding MO. The subshell ionization thresholds, the LUMO resonance energies and their oscillato…
This is the final report of a three-paper series on the K-shell photoabsorption and photoionization of trace elements, namely F, Na, P, Cl, K, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu and Zn. K lines and edges from such elements are observed in the X-ray spectra of supernova remnants, galaxy clusters and accreting black holes and neutron stars, their diagnostic potential being limited by poor atomic data. We are completing the previously reported radiative datasets with new photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections for isoelectronic sequences with electron number $19\leq N\leq 26$. We are also givin…
Reliable atomic data have been computed for the spectral modeling of the nitrogen K lines, which may lead to useful astrophysical diagnostics. Data sets comprise valence and K-vacancy level energies, wavelengths, Einstein $A$-coefficients, radiative and Auger widths and K-edge photoionization cross sections. An important issue is the lack of measurements which are usually employed to fine-tune calculations so as to attain spectroscopic accuracy. In order to estimate data quality, several atomic structure codes are used and extensive comparisons with previous theoretical data have been carried …
We demonstrate that the Auger decay rate in an endohedral atom is very sensitive to the atom's location in the fullerene cage. Two additional decay channels appear in an endohedral system: (a) the channel due to the change in the electric field at the atom caused by dynamic polarization of the fullerene electron shell by the Coulomb field of the vacancy, (b) the channel within which the released energy is transferred to the fullerene electron via the Coulomb interaction. % The relative magnitudes of the correction terms are dependent not only on the position of the doped atom but also on the t…
Photoionization spectra of Se have been studied by step-wise resonance laser ionization. The Rydberg series 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^3$P$_{0,1,2}$ and 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^5$P$_{1,2,3}$ were measured via different excitation schemes. Using the Rydberg series 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^3$P$_2$ with n=15-33, the ionization potential of Se was determined with improved precision to 76658.15(2)$_{stat}$(4)$_{sys}$ cm$^{-1}$, which resolved the discrepancy in previous literatures. Autoionizing (AI) spectra between the IP and two neighboring converging limits of the Se ionic states 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^2$D$…
