We develop a theoretical treatment of polarization spectroscopy and use it to make predictions about the general form of polarization spectra in the alkali atoms. Using our model, we generate theoretical spectra for the D2 transitions in 87Rb, 85Rb, and 133Cs. Experiments demonstrate that the model accurately reproduces spectra of transitions from the upper hyperfine level of the ground state only. Among these, the closed transition F -> F' = F + 1 dominates, with a steep gradient through line center ideally suited for use as a reference in laser locking.
We present an innovative fiber laser system for both cesium and rubidium manipulation. The architecture is based on frequency conversion of two lasers at 1560 nm and 1878 nm. By taking advantage of existing fiber components at these wavelengths, we demonstrate an all fiber laser system delivering 350 mW at 780 nm for rubidium and 210 mW at 852 nm for cesium. This result highlights the promising nature of such laser system especially for Cs manipulation for which no fiber laser system has been reported. It offers new perspectives for the development of atomic instruments dedicated to onboard ap…
Resonances in the magnetic decoupling curves for the spin relaxation of dense alkali-metal vapors prove that much of the relaxation is due to the spin-axis interaction in triplet dimers. Initial estimates of the spin-axis coupling coefficients for the dimers are 290 MHz for Rb; 2500 MHz for Cs.
We experimentally investigated Rabi resonance-based continuously frequency-tunable microwave (MW) magnetic field detection using a single hybrid vapor cell filled with cesium and rubidium atoms. The multispecies atomic systems, with their tunable abilities in transition frequencies, enabled this atomic sensing head to cover a broader detectable MW field scope compared to the use of a single metal atom. Here, we demonstrated the simultaneous observation of atomic Rabi resonance signals with 85Rb, 87Rb, and 133Cs in the same vapor cell. Using an experimentally feasible static magnetic field (DC …
I searched for the ground state 6.8 and 9.2 GHz hyperfine transitions of rubidium and cesium toward M- and L-dwarfs that show Rb and Cs optical resonance lines. The optical lines can pump the hyperfine transitions, potentially forming masers. These spin-flip transitions of Rb and Cs are the principal transitions used in atomic clocks (the $^{133}$Cs hyperfine transition defines the second). If they are detected in stellar atmospheres, these transitions would provide exceptionally precise clocks that can be used as accelerometers, as exoplanet detectors, as probes of the predictions of general …
Scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by cesium and rubidium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 5.057 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Rb system and at 5.067 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Cs system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.3 eV of width 0.4 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.4 eV in both systems. The pronounced P- and D-wave resonances in these systems lead to easil…
The electric dipole moment (EDM) of paramagnetic atoms is sensitive to the intrinsic EDM contribution from that of its constituent electrons and a scalar--pseudo-scalar (S-PS) electron-nucleus interactions. The electron EDM and the S-PS EDM contribution to atomic EDM scales as Z^3. Thus, the heavy paramagnetic atomic systems will exhibit large enhancement factors. However, the nature of the coupling is so small that it becomes an interest of high precision atomic experiments. In this work, we have computed the EDM enhancement factors of the ground states of Rb and Cs due to both the electron E…
We consider microwave hyperfine transitions in the ground state of cesium and rubidium atoms which are presently used as the primary and the secondary frequency standards. The atoms are confined in an optical lattice generated by a circularly polarized laser field. We demonstrate that applying an external magnetic field with appropriately chosen direction may cancel dynamic Stark frequency shift making the frequency of the clock transition insensitive to the strengths of both the laser and the magnetic fields. This can be attained for practically any laser frequency which is sufficiently dista…
Direct frequency-comb spectroscopy is used to probe the absolute frequencies of $6S_{1/2}$-$8S_{1/2}$ two-photon transitions of atomic cesium in hot vapor environment. By utilizing the coherent control method of temporally splitting the laser spectrum above and below the two-photon resonance frequency, Doppler-free absorption is built in two spatially distinct locations and imaged for high-precision spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis finds that these transition lines are measured with uncertainty below $5\times10^{-10}$, mainly contributed from laser-induced AC Stark shift.
We present a simple, analytic model for pump-probe spectroscopy in dilute atomic gases. Our model treats multilevel atoms, takes several broadening mechanisms into account and, with no free parameters, shows excellent agreement with experimentally observed spectra.
We experimentally investigate trap-loss spectra of the cesium 6S1/2(F=4)-71P3/2 Rydberg state by combining the cesium atomic magneto-optical trap with the narrow-linewidth, continuously-tunable 318.6 nm ultraviolet laser. That is, the atoms in the magneto-optical trap are excited to the Rydberg state due to the ultraviolet laser single-step Rydberg excitation, which leads to the reduction of atomic fluorescence. Based on the trap-loss spectroscopy technology, the Autler-Townes splitting due to strong cooling laser is observed, and the parameter dependence of the AT splitting interval of trap-l…
Spectroscopy of alkali-buffer gas mixtures at high pressures from single-digit to several 100 bars in the regime of substantial collisional broadening is relevant in a wide range of fields, ranging from collisional redistribution cooling to laboratory astrophysics. Here we report on spectroscopic measurements of dense rubidium-noble gas mixtures recorded in a pressure cell equipped with soldered sapphire optical viewports, which allows for the controlled realization of extreme conditions of high temperature and high pressure in a table top laboratory experiment. In the gas cell, we have record…
Employing recent developed magneto-optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS) combining cold atom, strong laser pulse, and ultrafast technologies, we study momentum distributions of the multiply ionized cold rubidium (Rb) induced by the elliptically polarized laser pulses (35 fs, $1.3 \times 10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$). The complete vector momenta of Rbn+ ions up to charge state n = 4 are recorded with extremely high resolution (0.12 a.u. for Rb$^+$). Variations of characteristic multi-bands displayed in momentum distributions, as the ellipticity varies from the linear to circular polariza…
We have performed high resolution spectroscopy of rubidium with a single mode continuous wave distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode. The saturation spectrum of the D_2-line of 85Rb and 87Rb was recorded with a resolution close to the natural line width. The emission frequency was actively stabilized to Doppler-free transitions with a relative accuracy of better than 7 parts in 10^9 using commercially available servo devices only. An output power of 80 mW was sufficient to allow for two-photon spectroscopy of the 5S-5D-transition of 87Rb. Further, we report on the spectral properties of the DF…
We study Rydberg atoms modulated by strong radio-frequency (RF) fields with a frequency of 70 MHz. The Rydberg atoms are prepared in a room temperature cesium cell, and their level structure is probed using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). As the RF field increases from the weak- into the strong-field regime, the range of observed RF-induced phenomena progresses from AC level shifts through increasingly pronounced and numerous RF-modulation sidebands to complex state-mixing and level-crossings with high-l hydrogen-like states. Weak anharmonic admixtures in the RF field generate …
The effect of microwave radiation on the resonance fluorescence of a cloud of cold $^{85}Rb$ atoms in a magnetooptical trap is studied. The radiation frequency was tuned near the hyperfine splitting frequency of rubidium atoms in the 5S ground state. The microwave field induced magnetic dipole transitions between the magnetic sublevels of the 5S(F=2) and 5S(F=3) states, resulting in a change in the fluorescence signal. The resonance fluorescence spectra were recorded by tuning the microwave radiation frequency. The observed spectra were found to be substantially dependent on the transition und…
We present a precise measurement of the rubidium ionic core polarizability. The results can be useful for interpreting experiments such as parity violation or black-body radiation shifts in atomic clocks since the ionic core electrons contribute significantly to the total electrical polarizability of rubidium. We report a dipole polarizability $α_d$ = $9.116 \pm 0.009$ $a_0^3$ and quadrupole polarizability $α_q$ = $38.4 \pm 0.6$ $a_{0}^{5}$ derived from microwave and radio-frequency spectroscopy measurements of Rydberg states with large angular momentum. By using a relatively low principal qua…
We report modulation transfer spectroscopy on the D2 transitions in 85Rb and 87Rb using a simple home-built electro-optic modulator (EOM). We show that both the gradient and amplitude of modulation transfer spectroscopy signals, for the 87Rb F=2 to F'=3 and the 85Rb F=3 to F'=4 transitions, can be significantly enhanced by expanding the beams, improving the signals for laser frequency stabilization. The signal gradient for these transitions is increased by a factor of 3 and the peak to peak amplitude was increased by a factor of 2. The modulation transfer signal for the 85Rb F=2 to F' transiti…
Direct evidence of excitation of the 5p3/2 -> 6p3/2 electric dipole forbidden transition in atomic rubidium is presented. The experiments were performed in a room temperature rubidium cell with continuous wave extended cavity diode lasers. Optical-optical double resonance spectroscopy with counterpropagating beams allows the detection of the non-dipole transition free of Doppler broadening. The 5p3/2 state is prepared by excitation with a laser locked to the maximum F cyclic transition of the D2 line, and the forbidden transition is produced by excitation with a 911 nm laser. Production of the…
We systematically investigated various types of surfaces on which rubidium (Rb) atoms were deposited by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and measured the light-induced atom desorption (LIAD) from those surfaces. The main surfaces of interest included synthetic quartz, yttrium metal, and paraffin. The Rb atoms deposited on quartz and yttrium surfaces by exposure to Rb vapor at room temperature were detected by XPS. Quartz is originally silicon dioxide. The yttrium surfaces were also oxidized, and Rb atoms reacted with oxygen on both surfaces. Conversely, Rb deposition was observed only at…
We demonstrate the single-photon Rydberg excitation of cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). We excite atoms directly from ${{6S}_{1/2}}$ ground state to ${{nP}_{3/2}}(n=70-100)$ Rydberg state with a narrow-linewidth 319 nm ultra-violet laser. The detection of Rydberg states is performed by monitoring the reduction of fluorescence signal of the MOT as partial population on ${{6S}_{1/2}} (F = 4)$ ground state are transferred to Rydberg state. We clearly observe Autler-Townes doublet in the trap-loss spectra due to the cooling lights. Utilizing the large electric polarizibility of Rydber…
We report the first measurement of the diffusion coefficients of francium and rubidium ions implanted in a yttrium foil. We developed a methodology, based on laser spectroscopy, which can be applied to radioactive and stable species, and allows us to directly take record of the diffusion time. Francium isotopes are produced via fusion-evaporation nuclear reaction of a 100 MeV 18-O beam on a Au target at the Tandem XTU accelerator facility in Legnaro, Italy. Francium is ionized at the gold-vacuum interface and Fr+ ions are then transported with a 3 keV electrostatic beamline to a cell for neutr…
We present the first evidence of excitation of the $5p_{3/2} \rightarrow 6p_{1/2}$ electric dipole-forbidden transition in atomic rubidium. The experiments were carried out in a rubidium vapor cell using Doppler-free optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy with counter-propagating beams. This a similar scheme to the excitation of the other fine transition $J=3/2$ in the $6p_{J}$ manifold previously reported. A $5s_{1/2} \rightarrow 5p_{3/2}$ electric dipole preparation step using a diode laser locked to the maximum F cyclic transition of the $D_2$ line is used to prepare the atoms in the…
In this paper, we describe two complementary non-linear spectroscopy methods which both allow to achieve Doppler-free spectra of atomic gases. First, saturated absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the structure of the $5{\rm S}_{1/2}\to 5{\rm P}_{3/2}$ transition in rubidium. Using a slightly modified experimental setup, Doppler-free two-photon absorption spectroscopy is then performed on the $5{\rm S}_{1/2}\to 5{\rm D}_{5/2}$ transition in rubidium, leading to accurate measurements of the hyperfine structure of the $5{\rm D}_{5/2}$ energy level. In addition, electric dipole selectio…
We have recorded fluorescence spectra of the atomic rubidium D-lines in the presence of several hundreds of bars buffer gas pressure. With additional saturation broadening a spectral linewidth comparable to the thermal energy of the atoms in the heated gas cell is achieved. An intensity-dependent blue asymmetry of the spectra is observed, which becomes increasingly pronounced when extrapolating to infinitely high light intensity. We interpret our results as evidence for the dressed (coupled atom-light) states to approach thermal equilibrium.
We demonstrate a single-photon Rydberg excitation spectroscopy of cesium (Cs) atoms in a room-temperature vapor cell. Cs atoms are excited directly from 6S1/2 ground state to nP3/2 (n = 70 - 100) Rydberg states with a 318.6 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser, and Rydberg excitation spectra are obtained by transmission enhancement of a probe beam resonant to Cs 6S1/2, F = 4 - 6P3/2, F' = 5 transition as partial population on F = 4 ground state are transferred to Rydberg state .Analysis reveals that the observed spectra are velocity-selective spectroscopy of Rydberg state, from which the amplitude and lin…
We report on measurements on the 5S-6P rubidium transition frequencies for rubidium isotopes with an absolute uncertainty of better than \SI{450}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{1/2}$ transition and \SI{20}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{3/2}$ transition, achieved by saturation absorption spectroscopy. From the results we derive the hyperfine splitting with an accuracy of \SI{460}{kHz} and \SI{30}{kHz}, respectively. We also verify the literature values for the isotope shifts as well as magnetic dipole constant and the electric quadrupole constant.
Compactness, robustness and autonomy of optical frequency references are prerequisites for reliable operation in mobile systems, on ground as well as in space. We present a standalone plug and play optical frequency reference device based on frequency modulation spectroscopy of the D2-transition in rubidium at 780 nm. After a single button press the hand-sized laser module, based on the micro-integrated laser-optical bench described in [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 38, 1885-1891 (2021)], works fully autonomous and generates 6 mW of frequency stabilized light with a relative frequency instability of 1.4e…
Optical spectroscopy of atoms and molecules is a field where one usually operates very far from thermal equilibrium conditions. A prominent example is spectroscopy of thin vapors, where the pump irradiation leads to a non equilibrium distribution within the electronic structure that is well shielded from the environment. Here we describe experimental work investigating absorption and emission lines of rubidium vapor subject to a noble buffer gas environment with pressure 100 to 200 bar, a regime interpolating between usual gas phase and liquid solid state conditions. Frequent elastic collision…
Data students collect from the typical advanced undergraduate laboratory on Saturated Absorption Spectroscopy (SAS) of rubidium can be used to measure the isotope shift and thus leads to an estimate of the isotopic ground state energy shift. This helps students refine their `picture' of the atomic ground state. We describe theoretically why this laboratory works well with free-running laser diodes, demonstrate it experimentally using these lasers tuned to either principal near-infrared transitions, and show an extension of the laboratory using the modulation transfer spectroscopy method.
We use a magnetometer probe based on the Zeeman shift of the rubidium resonant optical transition to explore the atomic magnetic response for a wide range of field values. We record optical spectra for fields from few tesla up to 60 tesla, the limit of the coil producing the magnetic field. The atomic absorption is detected by the fluorescence emissions from a very small region with a submillimiter size. We investigate a wide range of magnetic interactions from the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime to the fine one, and the transitions between them. The magnetic field measurement is based on the ru…
We describe and use a time-resolved pump-stimulated emission pump spectroscopic technique to measure collisional relaxation in a high-lying energy level of atomic cesium. Aligned $8p\,^2P_{3/2}$ cesium atoms were produced by a pump laser. A second laser, the stimulated emission pump, promoted the population exclusively to the $5d\,^2D_{5/2}$ level. The intensity of the $5d\,^2D_{5/2}\rightarrow6s\,^2S_{1/2}$ cascade fluorescence at 852.12 nm was monitored. The linear polarization dependence of the $6s\,^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow8p\,^2P_{3/2}\rightarrow5d\,^2S_{5/2}$ transition was measured in the pr…
We propose and demonstrate pump-probe spectroscopy of rubidium absorption which reveals the sub-Doppler hyperfine structure of the $^{5}$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow$ $^{5}$P$_{3/2}$ (D2) transitions. The counter propagating pump and probe lasers are independently tunable in frequency, with the probe operating at the single-photon-level. The two-dimensional spectrum measured as the laser frequencies are scanned shows fluorescence, Doppler-broadened absorption dips and sub-Doppler features. The detuning between the pump and probe lasers allows compensation of the Doppler shift for all atomic veloci…
Atoms in highly excited (Rydberg) states have a number of unique properties which make them attractive for applications in quantum information. These are large dipole moments, lifetimes and polarizabilities, as well as strong long-range interactions between Rydberg atoms. Experimental methods of laser cooling and precision spectroscopy enable the trapping and manipulation of single Rydberg atoms and applying them for practical implementation of quantum gates over qubits of a quantum computer based on single neutral atoms in optical traps. In this paper, we give a review of the experimental and…
We study an integrated silicon photonic chip, composed of several sub-wavelength ridge waveguides, and immersed in a micro-cell with rubidium vapor. Employing two-photon excitation, including a telecom wavelength, we observe that the waveguide transmission spectrum gets modified when the photonic mode is coupled to rubidium atoms through its evanescent tail. Due to the enhanced electric field in the waveguide cladding, the atomic transition can be saturated at a photon number $\approx$ 80 times less than a free-propagating beam case. The non-linearity of the atom-clad Si-waveguide is about 4 o…
Collective resonance of interacting particles has important implications in many-body quantum systems and their applications. Strong interactions can lead to a blockade that prohibits the excitation of a collective resonance of two or more nearby atoms. However, a collective resonance can be excited with the presence of weak interaction and has been observed for atoms in the first excited state ($P$ states). Here, we report the observation of collective resonance of rubidium atoms in a higher excited state ($D$ states) in addition to the first excited state. The collective resonance is excited…
We measured the spin noise spectroscopy (SNS) of rubidium atomic ensemble with two different atomic vapor cells (filled with the buffer gases or coated with paraffin film on the inner wall), and demonstrated the enhancement of signal to noise ratio (SNR) by using of the polarization squeezed state (PSS) of 795 nm light field with Stokes operator S2 squeezed. PSS is prepared by locking the relative phase between the squeezed vacuum state of light obtained by a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator and the orthogonal polarized local oscillator beam by means of the quantum noise lock. Under…
Optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) has become a powerful tool for studying energy level structure, dynamics, and coupling in many systems including atomic ensembles. Various types of two-dimensional (2D) spectra, including the so-called single-quantum, zero-quantum, and double-quantum 2D spectra, of both D lines (D$_1$ and D$_2$ transitions) of potassium (K) atoms have been reported previously. For rubidium (Rb), a major difference is that the D-lines are about 15 nm apart as opposed to only about 3 nm for K. Simultaneously exciting both D-lines of Rb atoms requires a broader…
We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the spectroscopy of dilute alkali atoms in a solid matrix of inert gases at cryogenic temperatures, specifically Rubidium atoms in a solid Argon or Neon matrix, and related aspects of the interaction energies between the alkali atoms and the atoms of the solid matrix. The system considered is relevant for matrix isolation spectroscopy, and it is at the basis of a recently proposed detector of cosmological axions, exploiting magnetic-type transitions between Zeeman sublevels of alkali atoms in a magnetic field, tuned to the axion mass,…
We demonstrate polarization spectroscopy of an excited state transition in room temperature cesium vapor. An anisotropy induced by a circularly polarized pump beam on the D2 transition is observed using a weak probe on the 6P3/2 to 7S1/2 transition. When the D2 transition is saturated, a sub-natural linewidth feature is observed which theoretical modeling shows is enhanced by Doppler averaging. Polarization spectroscopy provides a simple modulation-free signal suitable for laser frequency stabilization to excited state transitions.
The $6S_{1/2}-5D_{5/2}$ electric quadrupole transition is investigated in Cesium vapor at room temperature via nonlinear Doppler-free 6P-6S-5D three-level spectroscopy. Frequency-resolved studies of individual E2 hyperfine lines allow one to analyze optical pumping dynamics, polarization selection rules and line intensities. It opens the way to studies of transfer of light orbital angular momentum to atoms, and the influence of metamaterials on E2 line spectra.

We present a technique for simultaneous laser frequency stabilization on transitions of multiple atomic species with a single optical setup. The method is based on modulation transfer spectroscopy and the signals are separated by modulating at different frequencies and electronically filtered. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate simultaneous spectroscopy of the potassium D$_1$, D$_2$ and rubidium D$_2$ transitions. The technique can easily be extended to other atomic species and allows the development of versatile and compact frequency reference modules.
An experimental realization of high-precision direct frequency comb spectroscopy using counter-propagating femtosecond pulses on two-photon atomic transitions is presented. Doppler broadened background signal, hampering precision spectroscopy with ultrashort pulses, is effectively eliminated with a simple pulse shaping method. As a result, all four 5S-7S two-photon transitions in a rubidium vapor are determined with both statistical and systematic uncertainties below 10$^{-11}$, which is an order of magnitude better than previous experiments on these transitions.
We demonstrate a two-photon transition of rubidium (Rb) atoms from the ground state (5$S_{1/2}$) to the excited state (4$D_{5/2}$), using a home-built ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber amplifier at 1033 nm. This is the first demonstration of an atomic frequency reference at 1033 nm as well as of a one-colour two-photon transition for the above energy levels. A simple optical setup is presented for the two-photon transition fluorescence spectroscopy, which is useful for frequency stabilization for a broad class of lasers. This spectroscopy has potential applications in the fiber laser industry as a fr…
We study the peformances of Raman velocimetry applied to laser-cooled, spin-polarized, cesium atoms. Atoms are optically pumped into the F=4, m=0 ground-state Zeeman sublevel, which is insensitive to magnetic perturbations. High resolution Raman stimulated spectroscopy is shown to produce Fourier-limited lines, allowing, in realistic experimental conditions, atomic velocity selection to one-fiftieth of a recoil velocity.
