A Monolithic Pixel Sensor in 0.15 micron Fully Depleted SOI Technology

This letter presents the design of a monolithic pixel sensor with 10x10 micron^2 pixels in OKI 0.15 micron fully depleted SOI technology and first results of its characterisation. The response of the chip to charged particles has been studied on the 1.35 GeV electron beam at the LBNL ALS.

Development of CMOS monolithic pixel sensors with in-pixel correlated double sampling and fast readout for the ILC

This paper presents the design and results of detailed tests of a CMOS active pixel chip for charged particle detection with in-pixel charge storage for correlated double sampling and readout in rolling shutter mode at frequencies up to 25 MHz. This detector is developed in the framework of R&D for the Vertex Tracker for the International Linear Collider.

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a project of an electron-positron (e+e-) linear collider with the centre-of-mass energy of 200-500 GeV. Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are one of the proposed silicon pixel detector concepts for the ILC vertex detector (VTX). A Sensor with Analog and Digital Pixels in 0.15 micron SOI Technology

A monolithic pixel sensor in deep-submicron Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) CMOS technology has been designed, manufactured and characterised. This technology is of significant interest for applications in particle tracking and imaging. The prototype chip features pixels of 10 micron pitch arrayed in two analog sections and one digital section with a comparator and a latch integrated in each pixel. A MAPS-based Digital Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the ILC

A novel design for a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter is described, based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS). A test sensor with a pixel size of 50x50 um2 has been fabricated in July 2007. The simulation of the physical sensor is done using a detailed three-dimensional charge spread algorithm. Physics studies of the sensor are done including a digitisation algorithm taking into account the charge sharing, charge collection efficiency, noise, and dead areas. The influence of the charge sharing effect is found to be important and hence needs to be measured precisely.

A digital ECAL based on MAPS

Progress is reported on the development and testing of Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) for a Si-W ECAL for the ILC. Using laser and source setups, a first version of the sensor has been characterised through measurements of the absolute gain calibration, noise and pedestal. The pixel-to-pixel gain spread is 10%. Charge diffusion has been measured and found to be compatible with simulation results. The charge collected by a single pixel varies from 50% to 20% depending on where it is generated. Radiation damage caused by cold neutrons in boron doped CMOS active pixel sensors

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are considered as an emerging technology in the field of charged particle tracking. They will be used in the vertex detectors of experiments like STAR, CBM and ALICE and are considered for the ILC and the tracker of ATLAS. In those applications, the sensors are exposed to sizeable radiation doses.
