Evolution equations for the orientation distribution of axisymmetric particles in periodic flows are derived in the regime of small but non-zero Brownian rotations. The equations are based on a multiple time scale approach that allows fast computation of the relaxation processes leading to statistical equilibrium. The approach has been applied to the calculation of the effective viscosity of a thin disk suspension in gravity waves.
We study the spectral properties of the thermal force giving rise to the Brownian motion of a continuous mechanical system -- namely, a nanomechanical beam resonator -- in a viscous liquid. To this end, we perform two separate sets of experiments. First, we measure the power spectral density (PSD) of the position fluctuations of the resonator around its fundamental mode at its center. Then, we measure the frequency-dependent linear response of the resonator, again at its center, by driving it with a harmonic force that couples well to the fundamental mode. These two measurements allow us to de…
We study the orientational dynamics of heavy silica microrods flowing through a microfluidic channel. Comparing experiments and Brownian dynamics simulations we identify different particle orbits, in particular in-plane tumbling behavior, which cannot be explained by classical Jeffery theory, and we relate this behavior to the rotational diffusion of the rods. By constructing the full, three-dimensional, orientation distribution, we describe the rod trajectories and quantify the persistence of Jeffery orbits using temporal correlation functions of the Jeffery constant. We find that our colloid…
Numerical simulation of MHD boundary layer flow and heat transfer over a nonlinear stretching sheet in the porous medium with viscous dissipation using hybrid approach
Suspensions of anisotropic Brownian particles are commonly encountered in a wide array of applications such as drug delivery and manufacturing of fiber-reinforced composites. Technological applications and fundamental studies of small anisotropic particles critically require precise control of particle orientation over defined trajectories and paths. In this work, we demonstrate robust control over the two-dimensional (2D) center-of-mass position and orientation of anisotropic Brownian particles using only fluid flow. We implement a path-following model predictive control scheme to manipulate …
We investigate the dynamics of a dilute suspension of hydrodynamically interacting motile or immotile stress-generating swimmers or particles as they invade a surrounding viscous fluid. Colonies of aligned pusher particles are shown to elongate in the direction of particle orientation and undergo a cascade of transverse concentration instabilities, governed at small times by an equation which also describes the Saffman-Taylor instability in a Hele-Shaw cell, or Rayleigh-Taylor instability in two-dimensional flow through a porous medium. Thin sheets of aligned pusher particles are always unstab…
The article proposes an algorithm to model the collision between arbitrary ellipsoids in viscous fluid. It is composed of several steps, each improving upon the standard procedure employed in the current literature. First, an efficient contact detection algorithm is presented. Then, the semi-implicit Immersed Boundary Method of Tschisgale et al. (2018) is enhanced by the collision forces using the hard-sphere approach, so that the resulting model accounts for fluid forces throughout the entire collision process. Additionally, a new lubrication model is proposed that applies a constant lubricat…
In the theory of the Navier-Stokes equations, the viscous fluid in incompressible flow is modelled as a homogeneous and dense assemblage of constituent "fluid particles" with viscous stress proportional to rate of strain. The crucial concept of fluid flow is the velocity of the particle that is accelerated by the pressure and viscous interaction around it. In this paper, by virtue of the alternative constituent "micro-finite element", we introduce a set of new intrinsic quantities, called the vortex fields, to characterise the relative orientation between elements and the feature of micro-eddi…
As a stiff polymer tumbles in shear flow, it experiences compressive viscous forces that can cause it to buckle and undergo a sequence of morphological transitions with increasing flow strength. We use numerical simulations to uncover the effects of these transitions on the steady shear rheology of a dilute suspension of stiff polymers. Our results agree with classic scalings for Brownian rods in relatively weak flows but depart from them above the buckling threshold. Signatures of elastoviscous buckling include enhanced shear thinning and an increase in the magnitude of normal stress differen…
A dilute suspension of motile microorganisms subjected to a strong ambient flow, such as algae in the ocean, can be modelled as a population of non-interacting, orientable active Brownian particles (ABPs). Using the Smoluchowski equation (i.e. Fokker-Planck equation in space and orientation), one can describe the non-trivial transport phenomena of ABPs such as taxis and shear-induced migration. This work transforms the Smoluchowski equation into a transport equation, in which the drifts and dispersions can be further approximated as a function of the local flow field. The new model can be appl…
Rotational dynamics often challenge physical intuition while enabling unique realizations, from the rotor of a gyroscope that maintains its orientation regardless of the outer gimbals, to a tennis racket that rotates around its handle when tossed face-up in the air. In the context of inertial mass sensing, which can measure mass with atomic precision, rotational dynamics are normally considered a complication hindering measurement interpretation. Here, we exploit the rotational dynamics of a microfluidic device to develop a new modality in inertial resonant sensing. Combining theory with exper…
We investigate Brownian noise effects on magnetic focusing of prolate and oblate spheroids carrying permanent magnetic dipoles in channel (Poiseuille) flow subject to a uniform magnetic field. The focusing is effected by the low-Reynolds-number wall-induced hydrodynamic lift which can be tuned via tilt angle of the field relative to the flow direction. This mechanism is incorporated in a steady-state Smoluchowski equation that we solve numerically to analyze the noise effects through the joint position-orientation probability distribution function of spheroids within the channel. The results f…
