A novel technique for the control of fine particle behavior is developed and demonstrated experimentally. The technique is called a time-averaged particle driving (TAPD) method. This method contains an application of positive pulses to two point-electrodes placed facing each other with some distance in plasmas with fine particles. When the positive pulses are applied alternatively with a repetition period that is shorter than the particle response time, the particles feel only time-averaged force because of the large mass and are transported around the center between two point-electrodes. This method is quite effective for converging fine particles in the plasma.
The creation of attosecond pulses via laser-plasma interaction has been a subject of great scientific interest for more than three decades. This process is investigated by using particle-in-cell simulation with varying the plasma and laser parameters. The steepness of the density gradient at the plasma-vacuum interface is examined to see how this parameter affects the high-order harmonic generations and isolated-attosecond pulse creation. The optimal density gradient lengths $L$ are explored within the relativistic oscillating mirror mechanism. Although the ideal gradient lengths for the full …
Basic, local kinetic theory of ion temperature gradient driven (ITG) mode, with adiabatic electrons is reconsidered. Standard unstable, purely oscillating as well as damped solutions of the local dispersion relation are obtained using a bracketing technique that uses the argument principle. This method requires computing the plasma dielectric function and its derivatives, which are implemented here using modified plasma dispersion functions with curvature and their derivatives, and allows bracketing/following the zeros of the plasma dielectric function which corresponds to different roots of t…
Traditional expressions and definitions describing performance of plasma thrusters, including the thrust, specific impulse, and the thruster efficiency, assume a steady state plasma flow with a constant flow velocity. However, it is very common for these thrusters that the plasma exhibits unstable behavior resulting in time-variations of the thrust and the exhaust velocity. For example, in Hall thrusters, the ionization instability leads to strong oscillations of the discharge current (so-called breathing oscillations), plasma density, ion energy, and as a result the ion flow. In this paper, w…
A novel regime of the saturation of the Pierce-type ion-sound instability in bounded ion-beam-plasma system is revealed in 1D PIC simulations. It is found that the saturation of the instability is mediated by the oscillating virtual anode potential structure. The periodically oscillating potential barrier separates the incoming beam ions into two groups. One component forms a supersonic beam which is accelerated to an energy exceeding the energy of the initial cold ion beam. The other component is organized as a self-consistent phase space structure of trapped ions with a wide energy spread - …

A pulsed oscillating power amplifier has been developed to apply high frequency biasing voltage to an electrode at the edge of the STOR-M tokamak plasma. The power amplifier can deliver a peak-to-peak oscillating voltage up to 120V and current 30A within the frequency range of 1kHz-50kHz. The electrode is located in the equatorial plane at radius $ρ= 0.88$. The frequency of the applied voltage has been varied between discharges. It is observed that the plasma density and soft x-ray intensity from the plasma core region usually increase at lower frequency regime 1kHz-5kHz as well as relatively …
Nonlinear dynamics of collisionless non-neutral plasma in an external electrical trapping field is considered. Time-dependent solution of the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equations are obtained. The influence of initial conditions on the dynamics of charged layer is discussed.
We study theoretically the mode conversion and the resonant absorption of high frequency electromagnetic waves into longitudinal modes in magnetized and stratified plasmas in the case where the external magnetic field is perpendicular to both the directions of inhomogeneity and wave propagation. Mode conversion is shown to occur only when the waves are extraordinary waves. We develop an efficient method for calculating the mode conversion coefficient for arbitrary spatial configurations of the plasma density and the external magnetic field in a numerically exact manner using the invariant imbe…
The two stage electron acceleration model [arXiv: 1512.02411 and arXiv: 1512.07546] is extended to the study of laser magnetized-plasmas interactions at relativistic intensities and in the presence of large-scale preformed plasmas. It is shown that the cut-off electron kinetic energy is controllable by the external magnetic field strength and directions. Further studies indicate that for a right-hand circularly polarized laser (RH-CP) of intensity $10^{20}\ \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ and pre-plasma scale length $10\ μ\text{m}$, the cut-off electron kinetic energy can be as high as $500\ \text{MeV}$…
Single cycle laser pulse propagating inside a plasma causes controllable asymmetric plasma electron expulsion from laser according to laser carrier envelope phase (CEP) and forms an oscillating plasma bubble. Bubble's transverse wakefield is modified, exhibiting periodic modulation. Injection scheme for a laser wakefield accelerator combining a single cycle low frequency laser pulse and a many cycle high frequency laser pulse is proposed. The co-propagating laser pulses form a transversely oscillating wakefield which efficiently traps and accelerates electrons from background plasma. By tuning…
In this paper we propose a vertical stabilization~(VS) control system for tokamak plasmas based on the extremum seeking (ES) algorithm. The gist of the proposed strategy is to inject an oscillating term in the control action and exploit a modified ES algorithm in order to bring to zero the average motion of the plasma along the unstable mode. In this way, the stabilization of the unstable vertical dynamic of the plasma is achieved. The approach is validated by means of both linear and nonlinear simulations of the overall~ITER tokamak magnetic control system, with the aim of demonstrating robus…
External matching networks are crucial and necessary for operating capacitively coupled plasmas in order to maximize the absorbed power. Experiments show that external circuits in general heavily interact with the plasma in a nonlinear way. This interaction has to be taken into account in order to be able to design suitable networks, e.g., for plasma processing systems. For a complete understanding of the underlying physics of this coupling, a nonlinear simulation approach which considers both the plasma and the circuit dynamics can provide useful insights. In this work, the coupling of an equ…
The interaction of a high-frequency laser with plasma in the presence of an inhomogeneous external magnetic field has been studied here with the help of Particle-In-Cell simulation. It has been shown that laser enters inside the plasma as an extraordinary wave (X-wave), where the electric field of the wave oscillates perpendicular to both external magnetic field and propagation direction, and as it travels through the plasma, its dispersion property changes due to the inhomogeneity of the externally applied magnetic field. Our study shows that the X-wave's electromagnetic energy is converted t…
Recent simulation and experimental results suggest that the magnetic island and flow on resonant surface often do not satisfy the "no-slip" condition in the steady state. A new theory model on nonlinear plasma response to external magnetic perturbation in absence of no-slip condition is proposed. The model is composed of the equations for the evolution of both width and phase of magnetic island due to forced reconnection driven by the external magnetic perturbation, and the force-balance equation for the plasma flow. When the island width is much less than the resistive layer width, the island…
Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism is used to study chirp effects on the vacuum pair creation under inhomogeneous electric fields. For rapidly oscillating electric fields, the particle momentum spectrum is sensitive to both of the spatial scale and the chirp parameter, and the external field width has less significant effect for the maximally large chirp. For slowly oscillating electric fields, chirp effects could be identified at large spatial extents and the carrier phase plays a significant role reflecting chirp effects even at small spatial scales. We also notice that, the local density app…
We carry out 3D and 2D PIC-simulations of the expansion of a magnetized plasma that initially uniformly fills a half-space and contains a semi-cylindrical region of heated electrons elongated along the surface of the plasma boundary. This geometry is related, for instance, to the ablation of a plane target by a femtosecond laser beam under quasi-cylindrical focusing. We find that the decay of the inhomogeneous plasma--vacuum discontinuity is strongly affected by an external magnetic field parallel to its boundary. We observe various transient phenomena, including the anisotropic scattering of …
External electric circuits attached to radio-frequency plasma discharges are essential for the power transfer into the discharge and are, therefore, a key element for plasma operation. Many plasma simulations, however, simplify or even neglect the external network. This is because a solution of the circuit's auxiliary differential equations following Kirchhoff's laws is required, which can become a tedious task especially for large circuits. This work proposes a method, which allows to include electric circuits in any desired radio-frequency plasma simulation. Conceptually, arbitrarily complex…
The Weibel instability driven by two symmetric counter-streaming relativistic electron plasmas, also referred to as current-filamentation instability, is studied in a constant and uniform external magnetic field aligned with the plasma flows. Both the linear and non linear stages of the instability are investigated using analytical modeling and Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. While previous studies have already described the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field, we show here that the saturation stage is only weakly affected. The different mechanisms responsible for the saturation are d…
Using 1D and 2D PIC simulations, we describe and model the backward ejection of electron bunches when a laser pulse reflects off an overdense plasma with a sharp density gradient on its front side. The dependence on the laser intensity and gradient scale length is studied. It is found that during each laser period the incident laser pulse generates a large charge-separation field, or plasma capacitor, which accelerates an attosecond bunch of electrons towards vacuum. This process is maximized for short gradient scale lengths and collapses when the gradient scale length is comparable to the las…
The interaction of laser with plasmas leads to many interesting phenomena which includes laser energy absorption, mode conversion, energetic particle generation etc. In this work, the excitation of Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) Alfven solitons in plasma is demonstrated with the help of 2-D Particle - In - Cell (PIC) simulations. For this purpose, the propagation of a pulsed $CO_2$ (with a wavelength of $10 μm$) laser normally incident on an overdense plasma target is considered in the presence of an external magnetic field. The magnitude of the external magnetic field is chosen so as to have the e…
We have carried out a 3D ideal-MHD (Magnetohydrodynamic) simulation to study the evolution of laser generated plasma plume in a moderate external magnetic field (0.13 T) oriented perpendicular to the flow direction of the plasma plume. The simulation shows that the plasma plume pushes the external magnetic field lines outward in the direction of the expansion. This leads to compression and bending of the magnetic field lines. The force resulting from the change in shape and the density of magnetic field lines opposes the expansion of the plume. An elliptic layer of shocked plasma is formed at t…
A uniform in space, oscillatory in time plasma equilibrium sustained by a time-dependent current density is analytically and numerically studied resorting to particle-in-cell simulations. The dispersion relation is derived from the Vlasov equation for oscillating equilibrium distribution functions, and used to demonstrate that the plasma has an infinite number of unstable kinetic modes. This instability represents a new kinetic mechanism for the decay of the initial mode of infinite wavelength (or equivalently null wavenumber), for which no classical wave breaking or Landau damping exists. The…
Ultrafast extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources with a controllable polarization state are powerful tools for investigating the structural and electronic as well as the magnetic properties of materials. However, such light sources are still limited to only a few free-electron laser facilities and, very recently, to high-order harmonic generation from noble gases. Here we propose and numerically demonstrate a laser-plasma scheme to generate bright XUV pulses with fully controlled polarization. In this scheme, an elliptically-polarized laser pulse is obliquely incident on a plasma surface, and the r…
In this work, we demonstrate a method for constructing the Solov'ev equilibrium with any given 2D shape surrounded by a vacuum region using external poloidal field coils. The computational domain consists of two parts: the plasma region, where the solution is the same as the Solov'ev solution, and the vacuum region, where the magnetic field generated by external coils as well as plasma current is determined using the Green function method through a matching condition near the separatrix. However, the method is not limited to the Solov'ev equilibrium in particular. The accuracy, efficiency, and…
A pulsed oscillating power amplifier has been developed for high frequency biasing\cite{kn:deb1} and real time turbulent feedback experiment in STOR-M tokamak. It is capable to provide output peak to peak oscillating voltage of around $\pm60$V and current around 30A within frequency band 1kHz-50kHz without any distortion of any waveform signal. Overall output power is amplified by two stages power mosfet op-amp as well as nine identical push-pull amplifiers which are parallel connected in final stages. The power amplifier input signal, collected from plasma floating potential during plasma sho…
Ultrafast high-brightness X-ray pulses have proven invaluable for a broad range of research. Such pulses are typically generated via synchrotron emission from relativistic electron bunches using large-scale facilities. Recently, significantly more compact X-ray sources based on laser-wakefield accelerated (LWFA) electron beams have been demonstrated. In particular, laser-driven sources, where the radiation is generated by transverse oscillations of electrons within the plasma accelerator structure (so-called betatron oscillations) can generate highly-brilliant ultrashort X-ray pulses using a c…
A model of a stable plasma formation, based on radial quantum oscillations of charged particles, is discussed. The given plasmoid is described with the help of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. A new phenomenon of the effective attraction between oscillating charged particles is considered within the framework of the proposed model. The possible existence of a composite plasma structure is also discussed. Hypothesis about using the obtained results to describe natural long-lived plasma formations, which can serve as alternative energy sources, is put forward.
The dynamics of the current sheet of a Plasma Focus device is simulated with a two-dimensional model, in the radial expansion and the axial acceleration phase. The simulation considers the free expansion of the current sheet in hydrogen gas, without cathodes, and the comparison of experimental data with cathodes and without cathodes, using the parameters of Sumaj Lauray Plasma Focus 720 J.
Wakefield particle acceleration in hollow plasma channels is under extensive study nowadays. Here we consider an externally magnetized plasma layer (external magnetic field of arbitrary magnitude is along the structure axis) and investigate wakefields generated by a point charge passing along the layer axis.
Imposing an external magnetic field in short-pulse intense laser-plasma interaction is of broad scientific interest in related plasma research areas. We propose a simple method using a virtual current layer by introducing an extra current density term to simulate the external magnetic field, and demonstrate it with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The field distribution and its evolution in sub-picosecond time scale are obtained. The magnetization process takes a much longer time than that of laser-plasma interaction due to plasma diamagnetism arising from collective response. T…
Ion temperature anisotropy is a common feature for (quasi-)perpendicular collisionless shocks. By using two-dimensional full particle simulations, it is shown, that the ion temperature component perpendicular to the shock magnetic field at the shock foot region is proportional to the square of the Alfven Mach number divided by the plasma beta. This result is also explained by a simple analytical argument, in which the reflected ions get energy from upstream plasma flow. By comparing our analytic and numerical results, it is also confirmed that the fraction of the reflected ions hardly depends …
This study looks at the confinement effects of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux and magnetic fields, as well as topological defects in a quantum plasma, on the hydrogen atom. The joint effects show that the system is extremely attractive. Furthermore, as we've shown, the joint effect of the fields is greater than the sum of the individual effects, resulting in a significant change in the system's bound state energy. The magnetic field can be used as a control parameter or booster, whereas the topological defect and AB field are needed to hold the hydrogen atom in quantum plasmas at a low energy. The fi…
Injection of well-defined, high-quality electron populations into plasma waves is a key challenge of plasma wakefield accelerators. Here, we report on the first experimental demonstration of plasma density downramp injection in an electron-driven plasma wakefield accelerator, which can be controlled and tuned in all-optical fashion by mJ-level laser pulses. The laser pulse is directed across the path of the plasma wave before its arrival, where it generates a local plasma density spike in addition to the background plasma by tunnelling ionization of a high ionization threshold gas component. T…
For a system of equations describing one-dimensional nonlinear oscillations in a magnetoactive plasma, we study the effect of a constant magnetic field on the breaking of oscillations. For the nonrelativistic case, a criterion for the formation of a finite-dimensional singularity is obtained in terms of the initial data. It is shown that the enhancement of the magnetic field basically leads to an expansion of the class of initial data providing the global smoothness of the solution. The nature of the singularities of the solutions is illustrated by numerical examples.
