We present a theoretical and numerical study of the self-steepening and shock formation of large-amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in dusty plasmas. We compare the non-dispersive two fluid model, which predicts the formation of large amplitude compressive and rarefactive dust ion-acoustic (DIA) shocks, with Vlasov/fluid simulations where ions are treated kinetically while a Boltzmann distribution is assumed for the electrons.
The propagation of terahertz waves in a dust acoustic wave is investigated numerically. By assuming a sinus profile of the dust number density in the dust acoustic waves, the transmission properties are calculated using finite difference time domain method. It shows that the dust acoustic wave can function similarly as a Bragg filter to block the terahertz waves of a certain wavelength. The bandwidth of the filter depends on the density profile of the dust acoustic wave.

In this article we are going to consider dust acoustic wave in dusty plasma whose constituents are inertial negative charged dust particles, Boltzmann distributed electrons and non-thermal distributed ions with variable dust charge. Using reductive perturbation method, we have obtained Korteweg-de Veries (kdv) and modified kdv(mkdv) equations. A Sagdeev potential for the system and stability conditions for solitonic solution are also derived.
The impacts of dust density inhomogeneity and dust size distribution (DSD) on linear dust acoustic (DA) wave propagation have been investigated theoretically in an inhomogeneous unmagnetized dusty plasma having powerlaw DSD. Two different types of wave modes, viz. slow and fast mode, are found to propagate in this inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that the linear dispersion characteristics of the DA waves are substantially affected by the DSD and density inhomogeneity. Also, it is found that the phase velocity increases with increasing dust density.
A standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been established by using the reductive perturbation method to investigate the propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic waves, and their modulational instability as well as the formation of localized electrostatic envelope solitons in an electron depleted unmagnetized dusty plasma system comprising opposite polarity dust grains and super-thermal positive ions. The relevant physical plasma parameters (viz., charge, mass, number density of positive and negative dust grains, and super-thermality of the positive ions, etc.) have rigorous impact to re…
We examine linear dust acoustic waves (DAWs) in a dusty plasma with strongly correlated dust grains, and discuss possibility of a twisted DA vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). For our purposes, we use the Boltzmann distributed electron and ion density perturbations, the dust continuity and generalized viscoelastic dust momentum equations, and Poisson's equation to obtain a dispersion relation for the modified DAWs. The effects of the polarization force, strong dust couplings, and dust charge fluctuations on the DAW spectrum are examined. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the D…
The propagation characteristics of small-amplitude dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves (SWs) and shocks are studied in an unmagnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped positive and negative ions. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique with two different scaling of stretched coordinates, the evolution equations for DA SWs and shocks are derived in the forms of complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and complex Burgers' equations. The effects of dust charge variation, the dust thermal pressure, and the ratios of positive to negative ion number densities as well as the free to trapped ion …
We consider a two-dimensional complex (dusty) plasma crystal excited by an electrostatically-induced shock wave. Dust particle kinematics in such a system are usually determined using particle tracking velocimetry. In this work we present a particle tracking algorithm which determines the dust particle kinematics with significantly higher accuracy than particle tracking velocimetry. The algorithm uses multiple extended Kalman filters to estimate the particle states and an interacting multiple model to assign probabilities to the different filters. This enables the determination of relevant phy…
Ion-acoustic modes propagating in unmagnetized dusty plasmas are studied by applying a generic collisionless fluid model. An Eulerian-to-Lagrangean variable transformation leads to a new system of evolution equations, which may be combined into a single (rather complex) equation for the mean ion density. The linear and weakly nonlinear oscillations regimes are studied and their modulational stability is investigated. This study extends known previous results on the Lagrangian description of electron- or ion-acoustic electrostatic plasma modes. The relevance with the description of dust-ion aco…
Non-relativistic collisionless shock waves are widespread in space and astrophysical plasmas and are known as efficient particle accelerators. However, our understanding of collisionless shocks, including their structure and the mechanisms whereby they accelerate particles remains incomplete. We present here the results of numerical modeling of an ion-acoustic collisionless shock based on one-dimensional (1D) kinetic approximation both for electrons and ions with a real mass ratio. Special emphasis is made on the shock-reflected ions as the main driver of shock dissipation. The reflection effi…
The formation of the gigantic dust-acoustic rouge waves (DARWs) in an electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma system is theoretically observed for the first time. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (derived by utilizing the reductive perturbation method) has been analytically as well as numerically analyzed to identify the basic features (viz., height, thickness, and modulational instability, etc.) of DARWs. The results obtained form this investigation should be useful in understanding the basic properties of these rouge waves which can predict to be formed in electron de…
Low frequency dust acoustic waves (DAW) were excited in a laboratory argon dusty plasma by modulating the discharge voltage with a low frequency AC signal. Metallic graphite particles were used as dust grains and a digital FFT technique was used to obtain dispersion characteristics. The experimental dispersion relation shows the reduction of phase velocity and a regime where $\partial ω/\partial k < 0$. A comparison is made with existing theoretical model.

We have used the Sagdeev pseudo-potential method to discuss the arbitrary amplitude steady state dust acoustic solitary structures in the present plasma system. We have designed a computational scheme to draw the existence domains of different dust acoustic solitary structures. We have observed only negative potential solitary…
The nonlinear propagation of the dust-acoustic bright and dark envelope solitons in an opposite polarity dusty plasma system (composed of non-extensive $q$-distributed electrons, isothermal ions, and positively as well as negatively charged warm dust) have been theoretically investigated. The reductive perturbation method (which is valid for a small, but finite amplitude limit) is employed to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Two types of modes (namely, fast and slow dust-acoustic (DA) modes) have been observed. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and its growth rate …
The formation of dust ion-acoustic shocks (DIASs) in a four-component quantum plasma whose constituents are electrons, both positive and negative ions and immobile charged dust grains, is studied. The effects of both the dissipation due to kinematic viscosity and the dispersion caused by the charge separation as well as the quantum tunneling due to the Bohm potential are taken into account. The propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) is governed by the Korteweg-de Vries-Burger (KdVB) equation which exhibits both oscillatory and monotonic shocks depending not o…
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves.…
The dissipative electron-ion-pcd (positively charged dust) plasma, which is observed in both space and laboratory plasmas, is considered. The basic features of nonplanar cylindrical and spherical ion-acoustic subsonic shock waves in such a medium are investigated by deriving a modified Burgers equation using the reductive perturbation method. It is found that the stationary pcd species reduces the phase speed of the ion-acoustic waves, and consequently supports the subsonic shock waves due to the kinematic viscosity (acting as a source of dissipation) of the ion species. It is observed that th…
The Sagdeev pseudo-potential technique and the analytic theory developed by Das et al. [J. An experimental investigation of the propagation characteristics of shock waves in an inhomogeneous dusty plasma is carried out in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device. A homogeneous dusty plasma, made up of poly-dispersive kaolin particles, is initially formed in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma by maintaining a dynamic equilibrium of the pumping speed and the gas feeding rate. Later, an equilibrium density inhomogeneity in the dust fluid is created by introducing an imbalance in the original dynamic equilibrium. Non-linear wave structures are then excited in this inhomogeneous dusty p…
The dispersion properties of low frequency dust acoustic waves in the strong coupling regime are investigated experimentally in an argon plasma embedded with a mixture of kaolin and $MnO_2$ dust particles. The neutral pressure is varied over a wide range to change the collisional properties of the dusty plasma. In the low collisional regime the turnover of the dispersion curve at higher wave numbers and the resultant region of $\partialω/\partial k < 0$ are identified as signatures of dust-dust correlations. In the high collisional regime dust neutral collisions produce a similar effect and pr…

We consider influence of finite size of ions on properties of classic plasmas. We focus our attention on the ion sound for electron-ion plasmas. We also consider dusty plasmas, where we account finite size of ions and particles of dust and consider the dispersion of dust acoustic waves. Finite size of particles affects classical plasma properties. Finite size of particles gives considerable contribution for small wave lengths, which is area of appearing of quantum effects. Consequently, it is very important to consider finite size of ions in quantum plasmas as well.
The Sagdeev potential technique has been used to investigate the existence and the polarity of dust ion acoustic solitary structures in an unmagnetized collisionless nonthermal dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged static dust grains, adiabatic warm ions and nonthermal electrons when the velocity of the wave frame is equal to the linearized velocity of the dust ion acoustic wave for long wave length plane wave perturbation, i.e., when the velocity of the solitary structure is equal to the acoustic speed. Unmagnetized collisionless plasma system consisting of positive- and negative ions, and electrons are considered to study the head-on collision of ion-acoustic shock waves (IASWs) and its effects on the formation of shock (monotonic and oscillatory) waves and phase shift. The soliton solution is derived from the two-sided Korteweg-de Vries Burger (KdVB) equations. The KdVB equations are obtained using extend Poincare-Lighthill-Kuo (ePLK) method. It is assumed that the negative ions are immobile and the electrons follow the Boltzmann energy distribution in the plasma. The effects of plasma para…
The dusty plasma system (containing nonthermally distributed inertialess electron species, warm inertial ion species, and positively charged stationary dust species) is considered. The basic features of subsonic and supersonic modified-ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves formed in such a dusty plasma system have been investigated by the reductive perturbation method. It has been shown that positively charged dust species play a new role in favor of the formation of subsonic solitary and shock waves. On the other hand, the ion fluid temperature (represented by the parameter $σ$) and the elect…
We report on experimental observations of flow induced large amplitude dust-acoustic shock waves (DASW) in a complex plasma. The experiments have been carried out in a $Π$ shaped DC glow discharge experimental device using kaolin particles as the dust component in a background of Argon plasma. A strong supersonic flow of the dust fluid is induced by adjusting the pumping speed and neutral gas flow into the device. An isolated copper wire mounted on the cathode acts as a potential barrier to the flow of dust particles. A sudden change of gas flow rate is used to trigger the onset of high veloci…
A theoretical model is presented to study characteristics of dust acoustic shock in a viscous, magnetized and rotating dusty plasma at both fast and slow time scales. By employing reductive perturbation technique the nonlinear Zakharov--Kuznetsov (ZK) equation has been derived for both cases when dust is inactive and dynamic (fast and slow time scales). Both electrons and ions are considered to follow kappa/Cairns distribution. It is observed that the viscosity in both cases when dust is in background and active plays as a key role in dissipation for the propagation of acoustic shock. Magnetic…
The formation of unmagnetized electrostatic shock-like structures with a high Mach number is examined with one- and two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The structures are generated through the collision of two identical plasma clouds, which consist of equally hot electrons and ions with a mass ratio of 250. The Mach number of the collision speed with respect to the initial ion acoustic speed of the plasma is set to 4.6. This high Mach number delays the formation of such structures by tens of inverse ion plasma frequencies. A pair of stable shock-like structures is observed afte…

Drift wave is a prominent mode of a magnetized plasma of inhomogeneous density. It plays an important role in the transport of particles, energy and momentum perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The frequency of this mode is governed by the inhomogeneity scale length and is much lower than the typical homogeneous plasma modes involving ions and electrons. In this work the possibility of coupling of this particular mode with the low frequency modes of a dusty plasma medium is considered.
The influence of a charge-gradient force, associated with variations of the particle charge in response to external perturbations, on the propagation of low-frequency waves in weakly coupled complex (dusty) plasmas is investigated. The magnitude of the effect is compared with that due to polarization force, studied previously in the literature. Numerical estimates are presented for the regime, where the orbital motion limited approach to particle charging is relevant.
The nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped ions is investigated. Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations for massive dust fluids as well as kinetic Vlasov equations for ions, and applying the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation with a complex coefficient of nonlinearity is derived, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude DA waves in plasmas. The complex coefficient arises due to vortex-like distributions of both positive and negative ions. An analytical as well as numerical solutio…
