A circularly polarized rotationally symmetric paraxial laser beams carries hbar angular momentum per photon as spin. Focussing the beam with a rotationally symmetric lens cannot change this angular momentum flux, yet the focussed beam must have spin less than hbar per photon. The remainder of the original spin is converted to orbital angular momentum, manifesting itself as a longitudinal optical vortex at the focus. This demonstrates that optical orbital angular momentum can be generated by a rotationally symmetric optical system which preserves the total angular momentum of the beam.
Multipole expansion of an incident radiation field - that is, representation of the fields as sums of vector spherical wavefunctions - is essential for theoretical light scattering methods such as the T-matrix method and generalised Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT). In general, it is theoretically straightforward to find a vector spherical wavefunction representation of an arbitrary radiation field. For example, a simple formula results in the useful case of an incident plane wave. Laser beams present some difficulties. These problems are not a result of any deficiency in the basic process of spherica…
The paraxial approximation to the scalar Helmholtz equation is shown to be equivalent to the Schrödinger equation for a quantum harmonic oscillator. This equivalence maps the Gouy-phase of classical wave optics onto the time coordinate of the quantum harmonic oscillator and also helps us understand the qualitative behavior of the field and intensity distributions of focused optical beams in terms of the amplitude and probability distributions of quantum harmonic oscillators and vice versa.
Recent efforts to define microscopic solid-immersion-lenses (SIL) by focused ion beam milling into diamond substrates that are registered to a preselected single photon emitter are summarized. We show how we determine the position of a single emitter with at least 100 nm lateral and 500 nm axial accuracy, and how the milling procedure is optimized. The characteristics of a single emitter, a Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) center in diamond, are measured before and after producing the SIL and compared with each other. A count rate of 1.0 million counts per second is achieved with a $[111]$ oriented NV ce…
Synchronising ultra-short (~fs) and focussed laser pulses is a particularly difficult task, as this timescale lies orders of magnitude below the typical range of fast electronic devices. Here we present an optical technique that allows for femtosecond-scale synchronisation of the focal planes of two focussed laser pulses. This technique is virtually applicable to any focussing geometry and relative intensity of the two lasers. Experimental implementation of this technique provides excellent quantitative agreement with theoretical expectations. The proposed technique will prove highly beneficia…
Nanofibre-based optical cavities are particularly useful for quantum optics application, such as the development of integrated single-photon sources, and for studying fundamental light-matter interactions in cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). Although several techniques have been used to produce nanofibre-based optical cavities, focussed ion beam (FIB) milling is becoming popular; it can be used for the fabrication of complex structures directly in the nanofibre. This technique uses a highly accelerated ion beam to remove atoms from the target material with high resolution. However, it is …
We explore experimentally if the light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) interacts with chiral nematic polymer films. Specifically, we measure the circular dichroism of such a material using light beams with different OAM. We investigate the case of strongly focussed, non-paraxial light beams, where the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom are coupled. Within the experimental accuracy, we cannot find any influence of the OAM on the circular dichroism of the cholesteric polymer.
Electron vortex beams have been predicted to enable atomic scale magnetic information measurement, via transfer of orbital angular momentum. Research so far has focussed on developing production techniques and applications of these beams. However, methods to measure the outgoing orbital angular momentum distribution are also a crucial requirement towards this goal. Here, we use a method to obtain the orbital angular momentum decomposition of an electron beam, using a multi-pinhole interferometer. We demonstrate both its ability to accurately measure orbital angular momentum distribution, and i…
Radiation pressure forces in a focussed laser beam can be used to trap microscopic absorbing particles against a substrate. Calculations based on momentum transfer considerations show that stable trapping occurs before the beam waist, and that trapping is more effective with doughnut beams. Such doughnut beams can transfer angular momentum leading to rotation of the trapped particles. Energy is also transferred, which can result in heating of the particles to temperatures above the boiling point of the surrounding medium.
Longitudinal electromagnetic fields generally become comparable with the usually dominant transverse components in strongly-focussed, non-paraxial beams. For optical vortex modes it is highlighted here how their angular momentum properties produce longitudinal fields that in general must be accounted for, even within the paraxial regime. First-order longitudinal components of quantized Laguerre-Gaussian modes are derived and numerically studied with respect to the paraxial parameter, highlighting light-matter and spin-orbit interactions that stem from longitudinal fields of weakly-focussed, pa…
This paper reports on the excitation of surface plasmons on gold-coated nanofibre tips by side-illumination with a laser beam and the coupling of the surface plasmons to the optical fiber. The measurements show a strong dependence of the coupling efficiency on the incidence angle with a maximum coupling efficiency on the order of few percent. Moreover, the fibre tip was used as scanning probe device for measuring the beam waist of a focussed laser beam. This work is motivated by the goal to use such plasmonic nanofibre tips in quantum optics experiments with cold atoms.
We present experiments on Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) induced beam shifts in optical reflection. Specifically, we observe the spatial Goos-Hänchen shift in which the beam is displaced parallel to the plane of incidence and the angular Imbert-Fedorov shift which is a transverse angular deviation from the geometric optics prediction. Experimental results agree well with our theoretical predictions. Both beam shifts increase with the OAM of the beam; we have measured these for OAM indices up to 3. Moreover, the OAM couples these two shifts. Our results are significant for optical metrology sin…
The transverse beam pattern, usually observed in experiment, is a result of averaging the optical-frequency oscillations of the electromagnetic field distributed over the beam cross section. An analytical criterion is derived that these oscillations are coupled with a sort of rotation around the beam axis. This criterion appears to be in direct relation with the usual definition of the beam orbital angular momentum.
We show that a high-order Bessel beam propagating in a medium with nonlinear absorption is not completely absorbed, but survives in the form of a new propagation invariant vortex beam in which the beam energy and orbital angular momentum are permanently transferred to matter and at the same time refueled by spiral inward currents of energy and angular momentum. Unlike vortex solitons and dissipative vortex solitons, these vortex beams are not supported by specific dispersive nonlinearities (self-focusing or self-defocusing) and do not require gain. Propagation invariance in presence of multipl…
The angular spectrum of a vectorial laser beam is expressed in terms of an intrinsic coordinate system instead of the usual Cartesian laboratory coordinates. This switch leads to simple, elegant and new expressions such as for the angular spectrum of the Hertz vector corresponding to the electromagnetic fields. As an application of this approach, we consider axially symmetric vector beams, showing non-diffracting properties of these beams, without invoking the paraxial approximation. Further, we indicate the relevance of the method for analyzing nonparaxial resonators, such as microresonators
Light intensity control of the orbital angular momentum of the fundamental beam in a quadratic nonlinear process is theoretically and numerically presented. In particular we analyzed a seeded second harmonic generation process in presence of orbital angular momentum of the interacting beams due both to on axis and off axis optical vortices. Examples are proposed and discussed.
We introduce a novel and simple modulation technique to tailor optical beams with a customized amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM). The technique is based on the modulation of the angular spectrum of a seed beam, which allows us to specify in an independent manner the value of OAM and the shape of the resulting beam transverse intensity. We experimentally demonstrate our method by arbitrarily shaping the radial and angular intensity distributions of Bessel and Laguerre-Gauss beams, while their OAM value remains constant. Our experimental results agree with the numerical and theoretical pr…
It is well known that reflection of a Gaussian light beam ($\text{TEM}_{00}$) by a planar dielectric interface leads to four beam shifts when compared to the geometrical-optics prediction. These are the spatial Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift, the angular GH shift, the spatial Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift and the angular IF shift. We report here, theoretically and experimentally, that endowing the beam with Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) leads to coupling of these four shifts; this is described by a $4 \times 4$ mixing matrix.
We present a general theory of thermalization of light in multimode optical fibers, including optical beams with nonzero orbital angular momentum or vortex beams. A generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition is obtained, based on the conservation of the angular momentum. We confirm our predictions by numerical simulations and experiments based on holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. This establishes new constraints for the achievement of spatial beam self-cleaning, giving previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.
We present the results of numerical analysis of Gauss-Bessel beam reflection from a dielectric film under different angles of incidence. A transverse shift of the beam under the orbital momentum sign change is observed. The value of the shift is independent of the polarization state of the incident beam.
A matrix representation is introduced for stationary beam-like light fields that allows for simultaneous treatment of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) and the second-order state of spatial coherence. This Coherence-OAM matrix is a counterpart of the 2 x 2 beam Coherence-polarization matrix in a Cartesian polarization basis or Coherence-spin angular momentum (SAM) matrix in a circular polarization basis. The general properties of the Coherence-OAM matrix are discussed and then the Coherence-SAM-OAM matrix is introduced as a unifying entity for treating beams with any coherence, spin and orbit…
We reveal a large spin angular splitting of light beam on reflection at the Brewster angle both theoretically and experimentally. A simple weak measurements system manifesting itself for the built-in post-selection technique is proposed to explore this angular splitting. Remarkably, the directions of the spin accumulations can be switched by adjusting the initial handedness of polarization.
Traditionally, the angular momentum of light is calculated for "bullet-like" electromagnetic wave packets, although in actual optical experiments "pencil-like" beams of light are more commonly used. The fact that a wave packet is bounded transversely and longitudinally while a beam has, in principle, an infinite extent along the direction of propagation, renders incomplete the textbook calculation of the spin/orbital separation of the angular momentum of a light beam. In this work we demonstrate that a novel, extra surface part must be added in order to preserve the gauge invariance of the opt…
We studied both theoretically and experimentally the intensity distribution of a Gaussian laser beam when it was focussed by an objective lens with its numerical-aperture (NA) up to 0.95. Approximate formulae for full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the intensity distribution at focus were derived for very large and very small initial beam waists with respect to the entrance pupil radius of the objective lens. In experiments the energy flux through a 0.5 micron pinhole was measured for various pinhole positions. We found that the FWHM's at focus in the transverse and the longitudinal directio…
The relation between the angular transverse shifts of the beams reflected and transmitted at a plane interface of two isotropic transparent media is established. The derivation of this relation is based on the conservation law of the transverse component of the Minkowski linear momentum, which takes place in the processes of the reflection and transmission of wave packets.
We have theoretically predicted the gigantic spikes of the orbital angular momentum caused by the conversion processes of the centered optical vortex in the circularly polarized components of the elliptic vortex beam propagating perpendicular to the crystal optical axis. We have experimentally observed the conversion process inside the subwave deviations of the crystal length. We have found that the total orbital angular momentum of the wave beam is conserved.
We consider optical properties of Hypergeometric-Gaussian beam compositions with spiral-like intensity and phase distributions that were called the spiroid beams. Their orbital angular momentum as a function of a fractional-order topological charge has a chain of supper-pulses (bursts and dips). The form of the supper-pulses can be controlled by the spiral parameters. Such a phenomenon can be used in optical switches and triggers for optical devices and communication systems.
We analyze the transverse structure of the Gouy phase shift in light beams carrying orbital angular momentum and show that the Gouy radius $r_G$ characterizing the transverse structure grows as $\sqrt{2p+|\ell|+1}$ with the nodal number $p$ and photon angular momentum number $\ell$. The Gouy radius is shown to be closely related to the root-mean-square radius of the beam, and the divergence of the radius away from the focal plane is determined. Finally, we analyze the rotation of the Poynting vector in the context of the Gouy radius.
We experimentally study the behavior of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a noncollinear second harmonic generation (SHG) process. The experiment is performed by using a type I BBO crystal under phase matching conditions with femtosecond pumping fields at 830 nm. Two specular off-axis vortex beams carrying fractional orbital angular momentum at the fundamental frequency (FF) are used. We analyze the behavior of the OAM of the SH signal when the optical vortex of each input field at the FF is displaced from the beam's axis. We obtain different spatial configurations of the SH field, al…
It is shown that after reflection from a lossy medium the $s$- or $p$-polarized paraxial light beam carrying the orbital angular momentum suffers the 2D shift of the beam's centre of gravity relative the geometric optic axis. The mutually orthogonal components of this shift are expressed through the real and imaginary parts of the common complex quantity. The features of the 2D vector, which describes the shift, are analyzed.
We present an optical element for the separation of superimposed beams which only differ in angle. The beams are angularly resolved and separated by total internal reflection at an air gap between two prisms. As a showcase application, we demonstrate the separation of superimposed beams of different diffraction orders directly behind acousto-optic modulators for an operating wavelength of 800nm. The wavelength as well as the component size can easily be adapted to meet the requirements of a wide variety of applications. The presented optical element allows to reduce the lengths of beam paths a…
We investigate how beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) behave under total internal reflection. This is studied in two complementary experiments: In the first experiment, we study geometric shifts of OAM beams upon total internal reflection (Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts, for each the spatial and angular variant), and in the second experiment we determine changes in the OAM mode spectrum of a beam, again upon total internal reflection. As a result we find that in the first case, the shifts are independent of OAM and beam focussing, while in the second case, modifications in the O…
Light beam with optical vortices can propagate in free space only with integer orbital angular momentum. Here, we invert this scientific consensus theoretically and experimentally by proposing light beams carrying natural non-integer orbital angular momentum. These peculiar light beams are actually special solutions of wave function, which possess optical vortices with the topological charge l+0.5, where l is an integer. Owing to the interaction of phase and polarization singularity, these vortex beams with fractional topological charge can maintain their amplitude and vortex phase even when t…
A ray-optics model is proposed to describe the vector beam transformation in a strongly focusing optical system. In contrast to usual approaches basing on the focused field distribution near the focal plane, we employ the transformed beam pattern formed immediately near the exit pupil. In this cross section, details of the output field distribution are of minor physical interest but proper allowance is made for transformation of the incident beam polarization state. This enables to obtain the spin and orbital angular momentum representations which are valid everywhere in the transformed beam s…
We theoretically and experimentally investigated transformations of vortex beams subjected to sector perturbations in the form of hard-edged aperture. The transformations of the vortex spectra, the orbital angular momentum, and the informational entropy of the perturbed beam were studied. We found that relatively small angular sector perturbations have almost no effect on OAM, although the informational entropy is rapidly increasing due to the birth of new optical vortices caused by diffraction by diaphragm edges. At large perturbation angles, the uncertainty principle between the angle and OA…
We incorporate deep learning (DL) into coherent beam combining (CBC) systems for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Using a well-trained convolutional neural network DL model, the phase error in CBC systems could be accurately estimated and preliminarily compensated. Then, the residual phase error is further compensated by stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithms. The two-stage phase control strategy combined with DL and SPGD algorithms is validated to be a feasible and promising technique to alleviate the long-standing problem that the phase control bandwidth decrease…
In this work we discuss how the classical orbital angular momentum (OAM) and topological charge (TC) of optical beams with arbitrary spatial phase profiles are related to the local winding density. An analysis for optical vortices (OV) with non-cylindrical symmetry is presented and it is experimentally shown for the first time that OAM and TC may have different values. The new approach also provides a systematic way to determine the uncertainties in measurements of TC and OAM of arbitrary OV.
Based on angular amplitude modulation of orthogonal base vectors in common-path interference method, we propose an interesting type of hybrid vector beams with unprecedented azimuthal polarization gradient and demonstrate in experiment. Distinct to previously reported types, the synthetic hybrid vector beams exhibit geometrically intriguing projection tracks of angular polarization state on Poincare sphere, more than just conventional circles. More noteworthily, the designed azimuthal polarization gradients are found to be able to induce azimuthally non-uniform orbital angular momentum density…
We measure the far-field intensity of vortex beams going through nanoholes. The process is analyzed in terms of helicity and total angular momentum. It is seen that the total angular momentum is preserved in the process, and helicity is not. We compute the ratio between the two transmitted helicity components, $γ_{m,p}$. We observe that this ratio is highly dependent on the helicity ($p$) and the angular momentum ($m$) of the incident vortex beam in consideration. Due to the mirror symmetry of the nanoholes, we are able to relate the transmission properties of vortex beams with a certain helic…
Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams reflected from a multi-layered dielectric experience a shift in their centroid that is different than that from a single interface. This has been previously investigated for linearly polarized beams and, to a much lesser extent, beams with spin angular momentum. Here a combination of perturbation and computational analyses is used to provide a unified quantification of these shifts in layered dielectrics with two parallel interfaces. The approach is then extended to consider the qualitatively new behavior that results when the light is endowed with an intrinsic orb…
Self-healing, as an exotic effect, has showed many potential applications. In this paper, we focus on the self-healing effect of Laguerre-Gaussian beams after an obstacle. By taking advantage of angular spectrum theory, we study self-healing limit of the beam against on-axis obstacle. The dependence of self-healing capability on the radius of obstacle is analyzed. Additionally, we briefly discuss the self-healing limit of the beam in an off-axis scenario. Our results indicate that field amplitude of the beam will be healed well when the obstacle is approximately on-axis without oversized radiu…
Angular deviations and lateral displacements are optical effects widely investigated in literature. In this paper, by using the Taylor expansion of the Fresnel coefficients, we obtain an analytic expression for the beam reflected by and (upper) transmitted through a dielectric prism. These analytical approximations lead to a cubic equation which allows to determine the angular deviations of the optical beams. Near the Brewster angles, under specific conditions, we obtain a universal formulation for the cubic equation. Its explicit solution determines the peak position of the reflected and (upp…
In this paper, we present a systematic study of beam shifts and angular momenta of paraxial vortex beams at air-left-handed material (LHM) interfaces. It is shown that, compared to their counterparts at air-right-handed material (RHM) interfaces, the spatial Goos-Hänchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shifts remains the same, while the angular GH and IF shifts are reversed, at air-LHM interfaces. The spatial and angular shifts of paraxial vortex beams have their respective origins in transverse angular momenta and transverse linear momenta. The spatial GH and IF shifts remain unreversed as a res…
We report on the direct measurements of fluid flow vorticity using a spatially shaped beam with a superposition of Laguerre-Gaussian modes that reports on the rotational Doppler shift from microparticles intersecting the beam focus. Experiments are carried out on fluid flows with well-characterized vorticity and the experimental results are found to be in excellent agreement with the expected values even for 200 ms integration times. This method allows for localized real-time determination of vorticity in a fluid flow.
The spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light generated by tight focusing in optical tweezers has been regularly employed in generating angular momentum - both spin and orbital - in trapped mesoscopic particles. Specifically, the transverse spin angular momentum (TSAM), which arises due to the longitudinal component of the electromagnetic field generated by tight focusing, is of special interest, both in terms of fundamental studies and associated applications. We provide an effective and optimal strategy for generating TSAM in optical tweezers by tightly focusing radially and azimuthally polarize…
A light beam with phase singularity (PS) characterized with azimuthally symmetric angular positions (APs) can be constructed by the rotationally symmetric superposition of n (n is N) fractional vortex light beams with identical charges. The profile of this light beam deforms after propagation owing to its orbital angular momentum (OAM) noneigenvalue, and the deformation degree can be evaluated by the degree of phase dislocation associated with the PS. The expectation value of the mean deviation of its OAM from its characteristic charge value and the variation of the degree of phase dislocation…
In this work, we summarize the current state of understanding of lateral displacement and angular deviations of an optical beam propagating through dielectric blocks. In part I, the analytical formulas, found for critical incidence, are compared with numerical calculations and, when possible, extended from Gaussian to more general angular distributions. Angular deviations are discussed both for the critical and for the Brewster incidence. The combined effect, known as the composite Goos-Haenchen shift, shows an interesting axial dependence and, under particular circumstances, the intriguing ph…
Coherent beam combination (CBC) of fiber lasers holds promise for achieving high brightness laser systems, which have given rise to widespread applications such as particle accelerator, space debris removal, and industrial fabrication. The emitting laser array of CBC systems offers intriguing features in terms of agile beam steering, flexible beam shaping, and high scalability for output power and array elements. However, the theoretical model of the laser array in CBC systems is less well explored beyond the routine angular-spectrum method, where methods for optimizing the laser array configu…
Recently, we have predicted that the modulation instability of optical vortex solitons propagating in nonlinear colloidal suspensions with exponential saturable nonlinearity leads to formation of necklace beams (NBs) [S.~Z.~Silahli, W.~Walasik and N.~M.~Litchinitser, Opt.~Lett., \textbf{40}, 5714 (2015)]. Here, we investigate the dynamics of NB formation and propagation, and show that the distance at which the NB is formed depends on the input power of the vortex beam. Moreover, we show that the NB trajectories are not necessarily tangent to the initial vortex ring, and that their velocities h…
Hollow Gaussian beams (HGB) are a special class of doughnut shaped beams that do not carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). Such beams have a wide range of applications in many fields including atomic optics, bio-photonics, atmospheric science, and plasma physics. Till date, these beams have been generated using linear optical elements. Here, we show a new way of generating HGBs by three-wave mixing in a nonlinear crystal. Based on nonlinear interaction of photons having OAM and conservation of OAM in nonlinear processes, we experimentally generated ultrafast HGBs of order as high as 6 and powe…
In this letter a general method for expanding paraxial beams into multipolar electromagnetic fields is presented. This method is applied to the expansion of paraxial modes with orbital angular momentum (OAM), showing how the paraxial OAM is related to the general angular momentum of an electromagnetic wave. This method can be extended to quasi-paraxial beams, i.e. highly focused laser beams. Some applications to the control of electronic transitions in atoms are discussed.
Spin-to-orbital-angular-momentum conversion has attracted considerable interest as a tool to create exotic light beams, leading to the emergence of novel devices that implement this function. These converters exploit the geometrical phase to create helical beams of handedness determined by the chirality of the incident light. This property is finding important applications in quantum optics thanks to the demonstration of liquid crystal spin-to-orbital angular momentum converters (SOC) known as q-plates. Here we demonstrate high-efficiency SOCs in the visible based on dielectric metasurfaces th…
We present a novel technique for generating beams of light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) that increases mode purity and decreases singularity splitting by orders of magnitude. This technique also works to control and mitigate beam divergence within propagation distances less than the Rayleigh length. Additionally, we analyze a tunable parameter of this technique that can change the ratio of beam purity to power to fit desired specifications. Beam generation via this technique is achievable using only phase-modulating optical elements, which reduces experimental complexity and beam en…
We presented a new method for measuring the squares of the amplitudes and phases of partial vortex-beams in a complex beam array in real time. The method is based on measuring the high-order intensity moments and analyzing the solutions of a system of linear equations. Calibration measurements have shown that the measurement error at least for an array of 10-15 beams does not exceed 4%. It has theoretically and experimentally been shown that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of combined singular beams depends essentially on the fractional topological charge p. For integer values of the topolo…
In light beams with circular or elliptic polarization, the transverse energy flow consists of the "spin" and "orbital" parts. Both of them can induce the orbital motion of microparticles suspended within the field of a light beam, and this should be taken into account in experiments on the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. The character of the spin, orbital and total transverse energy flows in circular Laguerre-Gaussian beams is studied analytically; graphical representations of the flows in the beam cross section (flow maps) are calculated and analyzed. The spin circulatory flow ca…
Phase conjugation with stimulated Brillouin scattering can be used to correct wavefront aberrations in high-power laser systems. Here, we consider such process with cylindrical vector lasers beams. By using a vectorial approach and a modal decomposition, we obtain a differential matrix equation that enables the calculation of the structure of Stokes vector eigenmodes and their Brillouin gain. The emphasis is put on the mode with the largest gain, which contributes the most to the Stokes beam. We show that the phase conjugation of orbital angular momentum in cylindrical vector beams is prevente…
