Recently, an increasing interest in astrophysical as well as laboratory plasmas has been manifested in reference to the existence of relativistic flows, related in turn to the production of intense electric fields in magnetized systems. Such phenomena require their description in the framework of a consistent relativistic kinetic theory, rather than on relativistic MHD equations, subject to specific closure conditions. The purpose of this work is to apply the relativistic single-particle guiding-center theory developed by Beklemishev and Tessarotto, including the nonlinear treatment of small-wavelength EM perturbations which may naturally arise in such systems. As a result, a closed set of relativistic gyrokinetic equations, consisting of the collisionless relativistic kinetic equation, expressed in hybrid gyrokinetic variables, and the averaged Maxwell's equations, is derived for an arbitrary four-dimensional coordinate system.
We study the amplitude modulation of nonlinear kinetic Alfv{é}n waves (KAWs) in an intermediate low-beta magnetoplasma. Starting from a set of fluid equations coupled to the Maxwell's equations, we derive a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) which govern the evolution of KAW envelopes in the plasma. The modulational instability (MI) of such KAW envelopes is then studied by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation derived from the coupled PDEs. It is shown that the KAWs can evolve into bright envelope solitons, or can undergo damping depending on whether the characte…
The nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped ions is investigated. Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations for massive dust fluids as well as kinetic Vlasov equations for ions, and applying the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation with a complex coefficient of nonlinearity is derived, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude DA waves in plasmas. The complex coefficient arises due to vortex-like distributions of both positive and negative ions. An analytical as well as numerical solutio…
A crucial issue in relativistic plasma, particularly relevant in the astrophysical context, is the description of highly magnetized plasmas based on a covariant formulation of gyrokinetic dynamics. An interesting case in question is that in which the background electric field (produced either by the same plasma of by other sources) results suitably small (or vanishing) with respect to the magnetic field, while at the same time short-wavelength EM perturbations can be present. The purpose of this work is to extend the relativistic gyrokinetic theory developed by Beklemishev \textit{et al.} [199…
A basic prerequisite for the investigation of relativistic astrophysical magnetoplasmas, occurring typically in the vicinity of massive stellar objects (black holes, neutron stars, active galactic nuclei, etc.), is the accurate description of single-particle covariant dynamics, based on gyrokinetic theory (Beklemishev et al.,1999-2005). Provided radiation-reaction effects are negligible, this is usually based on the assumption that both the space-time metric and the EM fields (in particular the magnetic field) are suitably prescribed and are considered independent of single-particle dynamics, …
A kinetic theory for electromagnetic ion waves in a cold relativistic plasma is derived. The kinetic equation for the broadband electromagnetic ion waves is coupled to the slow density response via an acoustic equation driven by ponderomotive force like term linear in the electromagnetic field amplitude. The modulational instability growth rate is derived for an arbitrary spectrum of waves. The monochromatic and random phase cases are studied.
Many-particle QED is applied to kinetic theory of radiative processes in many- component plasmas with relativistic electrons and nonrelativistic heavy particles. Within the framework of nonequilibrium Green's function technique, transport and mass-shell equations for fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are obtained. We show that the transverse field correlation functions can be decomposed into sharply peaked (non-Lorentzian) parts that describe resonant (propagating) photons and off-shell parts corresponding to virtual photons in plasmas. Analogous decomposi- tions are found for the long…
We study a recently derived fully relativistic kinetic model for spin-1/2 particles. Firstly, the full set of conservation laws for energy, momentum and angular momentum are given, together with an expression for the (non-symmetric) stress-energy tensor. Next, the thermodynamic equilibrium distribution is given in different limiting cases. Furthermore, we address the analytical complexity that arises when the spin- and momentum eigenfunctions are coupled in linear theory, by calculating the linear dispersion relation for such a case. Finally, we discuss the model and give some context by compa…
We consider the relativistic ion-acoustic mode in a plasma composed by cold ions and an ultra-degenerate electron gas, described the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system. A critical examination of popular fluid models for relativistic ion-acoustic waves is provided, comparing kinetic and hydrodynamic results. The kinetic linear dispersion relation is shown to be reproduced by the rigorous relativistic hydrodynamic equations with Chandrasekhar's equation of state.
As is well-known, for plasmas of high density and modest temperature, the classical kinetic theory needs to be extended. Such extensions can be based on the Schrödinger Hamiltonian, applying a Wigner transform of the density matrix, in which case the Vlasov equation is replaced by the celebrated Wigner-Moyal equation. Extending the treatment to more complicated models, we investigate aspects such as spin dynamics (based on the Pauli Hamiltonian), exchange effects (using the Hartree-Fock approximation), Landau quantization, and quantum relativistic theory. In the relativistic theory we first st…
We study kinetic effects responsible for the transition to relativistic self-induced transparency in the interaction of a circularly-polarized laser-pulse with an overdense plasma and their relation to hole-boring and ion acceleration. It is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulations and an analysis of separatrices in single-electron phase-space, that ion motion can suppress fast electron escape to the vacuum, which would otherwise lead to transition to the relativistic transparency regime. A simple analytical estimate shows that for large laser pulse amplitude $a_0$ the time scale over w…
The open problem of derivation of the relativistic Vlasov equation for the systems of charged particles moving with the velocities up to the speed of light and creating the electromagnetic field in accordance with the full set of the Maxwell equations is considered. Moreover, the method of derivation is firstly illustrated on the nonrelativistic kinetic model. Independent derivation of the relativistic hydrodynamics is also demonstrated. Key role of these derivations of the hydrodynamic and kinetic equations includes the explicit operator of averaging on the physically infinitesimal volume sug…
In particle-based algorithms, the effect of binary collisions is commonly described in a statistical way, using Monte Carlo techniques. It is shown that, in the relativistic regime, stringent constraints should be considered on the sampling of particle pairs for collision, which are critical to ensure physically meaningful results, and that nonrelativistic sampling criteria (e.g., uniform random pairing) yield qualitatively wrong results, including equilibrium distributions that differ from the theoretical Jüttner distribution. A general procedure for relativistically consistent algorithms is …
Detailed deterministic derivation of the kinetic equations for the relativistic plasmas is given. Focus is made on the dynamic of one-coordinate distribution functions of various tensor dimensions, but the closed set of kinetic equations is constructed of three functions: the scalar distribution function, the vector distribution function of dipole moment, and the vector distribution function of velocity (or the dipole moment in the momentum space). All two-coordinate distributions functions are discussed as well. They are presented together with their limits existing in the self-consistent fie…
We propose an asymptotic-preserving (AP), uniformly convergent numerical scheme for the relativistic collisional Drift-Kinetic Equation (rDKE) to simulate runaway electrons in axisymmetric toroidal magnetic field geometries typical of tokamak devices. The approach is derived from an exact Green's function solution with numerical approximations of quantifiable impact, and results in a simple, two-step operator-split algorithm, consisting of a collisional Eulerian step, and a Lagrangian orbit-integration step with analytically prescribed kernels. The AP character of the approach is demonstrated …
We study the linearized kinetic equation of relaxation model which was proposed by Bhatnagar, Gross and Krook (also called BGK model) and solve the dispersion relation. Using the solution of the dispersion relation, we analyze the relaxation of the macroscopic mode and kinetic mode. Since BGK model is not based on the expansion in the mean free path in contrast to the Chapman-Enskog expansion, the solution can describe accurate relaxation of initial disturbance with any wavelength. This non-relativistic analysis gives suggestions for our next work of relativistic analysis of relaxation.
We assess the impact of non-thermally shock-accelerated particles on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) jump conditions of relativistic shocks. The adiabatic constant is calculated directly from first principle particle-in-cell simulation data, enabling a semi-kinetic approach to improve the standard fluid model and allowing for an identification of the key parameters that define the shock structure. We find that the evolving upstream parameters have a stronger impact than the corrections due to non-thermal particles. We find that the decrease of the upstream bulk speed yields deviations from the s…
Rapid gamma-ray flares pose an astrophysical puzzle, requiring mechanisms both to accelerate energetic particles and to produce fast observed variability. These dual requirements may be satisfied by collisionless relativistic magnetic reconnection. On the one hand, relativistic reconnection can energize gamma-ray emitting electrons. On the other, as previous kinetic simulations have shown, the reconnection acceleration mechanism preferentially focuses high-energy particles -- and their emitted photons -- into beams, which may create rapid blips in flux as they cross a telescope's line of sight…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the linearized kinetic equations for the models of Marle and Anderson-Witting, and compare these dispersion relations with the 14-moment theory. First, we propose a modification of the Marle model to improve the resultant transport coefficients in accord with those obtained by the full Boltzmann equation. Using the modified Marle model and Anderson-Witting model, we calculate dispersion relations that are kinetically correct within the validity of the BGK approximation. The 14-moment theory that includes the time derivative of dissipation currents …
Emerging possibilities for creating and studying novel plasma regimes, e.g. relativistic plasmas and dense systems, in a controlled laboratory environment also requires new modeling tools for such systems. This brings motivation for theoretical studies of the kinetic theory governing the dynamics of plasmas for which both relativistic and quantum effects occur simultaneously. Here, we investigate relativistic corrections to the Pauli Hamiltonian in the context of a scalar kinetic theory for spin-1/2 quantum plasmas. In particular, we formulate a quantum kinetic theory that takes such effects a…
We derive the relativistic kinetic equation for Compton scattering of polarized radiation in strong magnetic field using the Bogolyubov method. The induced scattering and the Pauli exclusion principle are taken into account. The electron polarization is also considered in the general form of the kinetic equation. The special forms of the equation for the cases of the non-polarized electrons, the rarefied electron gas and the two polarization mode description of radiation are found. The derived equations are valid for any photon and electron energies and the magnetic field strength below about …
It is well known that the particular form of the two-particle correlation function, in the collisional integral of the classical Boltzmman equation, fix univocally the entropy of the system, which turn out to be the Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon entropy. In the ordinary relativistic Boltzmann equation, some standard generalizations, with respect its classical version, imposed by the special relativity, are customarily performed. The only ingredient of the equation, which tacitly remains in its original classical form, is the two-particle correlation function, and this fact imposes that also the rela…
We present the results of three-dimensional kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of isotropic periodic relativistically magnetized pair-plasma equilibria known as the ABC fields. We performed several simulations for initial wavenumbers k_ini = 2 or k_ini = 4, different efficiencies of radiative cooling (including radiation reaction from synchrotron and inverse Compton processes), and different mean magnetization values. These equilibria evolve by means of ideal coalescence instability, the saturation of which generates ab initio localized kinetically-thin current layers -- sites of magne…
We describe results from particle-in-cell simulations of driven turbulence in collisionless, magnetized, relativistic pair plasma. This physical regime provides a simple setting for investigating the basic properties of kinetic turbulence and is relevant for high-energy astrophysical systems such as pulsar wind nebulae and astrophysical jets. In this paper, we investigate the statistics of turbulent fluctuations in simulations on lattices of up to $1024^3$ cells and containing up to $2 \times 10^{11}$ particles. Due to the absence of a cooling mechanism in our simulations, turbulent energy dis…
In this paper we derive a fully relativistic kinetic theory for spin-1/2 particles and its coupling to Maxwell's equations, valid in the long scale-length limit, where the fields vary on a scale much longer than the localization of the particles; we work to first order in $\hbar$. Our starting point is a Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation, applicable to this regime, of the Dirac Hamiltonian. We derive the corresponding evolution equation for the Wigner quasi-distribution in an external electromagnetic field. Using a Lagrangian method we find expressions for the charge and current densities, …
It is argued that the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations of the kinetic theory of plasma approximately describe a relativistic system of $N$ charged point particles interacting with the electromagnetic Maxwell fields in a Bopp--Landé--Thomas--Podolsky (BLTP) vacuum, provided the microscopic dynamics lasts long enough. The purpose of this work is not to supply an entirely rigorous vindication, but to lay down a conceptual road map for the microscopic foundations of the kinetic theory of special-relativistic plasma, and to emphasize that a rigorous derivation seems feasible. Rather than worki…
Besides being one of the most fundamental basic issues of plasma physics, the stability analysis of an electron beam-plasma system is of critical relevance in many areas of physics. Surprisingly, decades of extensive investigation had not yet resulted in a realistic unified picture of the multidimensional unstable spectrum within a fully relativistic and kinetic framework. All attempts made so far in this direction were indeed restricted to simplistic distribution functions and/or did not aim at a complete mapping of the beam-plasma parameter space. The present paper comprehensively tackles th…
Nonthermal relativistic plasmas are ubiquitous in astrophysical systems like pulsar wind nebulae and active galactic nuclei, as inferred from their emission spectra. The underlying nonthermal particle acceleration (NTPA) processes have traditionally been modeled with a Fokker-Planck (FP) diffusion-advection equation in momentum space. In this paper, we directly test the FP framework in ab-initio kinetic simulations of driven magnetized turbulence in relativistic pair plasma. By statistically analyzing the motion of tracked particles, we demonstrate the diffusive nature of NTPA and measure the …
We present results from particle-in-cell simulations of driven turbulence in magnetized, collisionless, and relativistic pair plasma. We find that fluctuations are consistent with the classical $k_\perp^{-5/3}$ magnetic energy spectrum at fluid scales and a steeper $k_\perp^{-4}$ spectrum at sub-Larmor scales, where $k_\perp$ is the wavevector perpendicular to the mean field. We demonstrate the development of a non-thermal, power-law particle energy distribution, $f(E) \sim E^{-α}$, with index $α$ that decreases with increasing magnetization and increases with increasing system size (relative …
Basic properties of relativistic magnetic reconnection in electron-positron pair plasmas are investigated by using a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. We first revisit a problem by Hesse & Zenitani (2007), who examined the kinetic Ohm's law across the X line. We formulate a relativistic Ohm's law by decomposing the stress-energy tensor. Then, the role of the new term, called the heat-flow inertial term, is examined in the PIC simulation data. We further evaluate the energy balance in the reconnection system. These analyses demonstrate physically transparent ways to diagnose relativistic kinet…
We derive the relativistic non-resistive, viscous second-order magnetohydrodynamic equations for the dissipative quantities using the relaxation time approximation. The Boltzmann equation is solved for a system of particles and antiparticles using Chapman-Enskog like gradient expansion of the single-particle distribution function truncated at second order. In the first order, the transport coefficients are independent of the magnetic field. In the second-order, new transport coefficients that couple magnetic field and the dissipative quantities appear which are different from those obtained in…
Relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) provides an extremely useful description of the low-energy long-wavelength phenomena in a variety of physical systems from quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions to matters in supernovas, compact stars, and early universe. We review the recent theoretical progresses of RMHD, such as a formulation of RMHD from the perspective of magnetic flux conservation using the entropy-current analysis, the nonequilibrium statistical operator approach applied to quantum electrodynamics, and the relativistic kinetic theory. We discuss how the transport coefficient…
