We treat the guiding-center dynamics in a varying external Maxwell field using a relativistically covariant action principle which reproduces the known Vandervoort expression for the drift velocity and extends it to curved spacetime. We derive the corresponding kinetic theory and ideal hydrodynamic theory. In contrast to conventional five-equation hydrodynamics, the guiding-center hydrodynamics needs only three equations due to a constraint on the motion across magnetic field. We argue that such a hydrodynamics is applicable to strongly coupled plasmas where kinetic theory fails.
We develop a set of kinetic equations for hydrodynamic fluctuations which are equivalent to nonlinear hydrodynamics with noise. The hydro-kinetic equations can be coupled to existing second order hydrodynamic codes to incorporate the physics of these fluctuations. We first show that the kinetic response precisely reproduces the renormalization of the shear viscosity and the fractional power ($\propto ω^{3/2}$) which characterizes equilibrium correlators of energy and momentum for a static fluid. Then we use the hydro-kinetic equations to analyze thermal fluctuations for a Bjorken expansion, ev…
Hydrodynamics can be formulated in terms of a perturbative series in derivatives of the temperature, chemical potential, and flow velocity around an equilibrium state. Different formulations for this series have been proposed over the years, which consequently led to the development of various hydrodynamic theories. In this work, we discuss the relativistic generalizations of the perturbative expansions put forward by Chapman and Enskog, and Hilbert, using general matching conditions in kinetic theory. This allows us to describe, in a comprehensive way, how different out-of-equilibrium definit…
The mixture of quark and gluon fluids is studied in a one-dimensional boost-invariant setup using the set of relativistic kinetic equations treated in the relaxation time approximation. Effects of a finite quark mass, non-zero baryon number density, and quantum statistics are discussed. Comparisons between the exact kinetic-theory results and anisotropic hydrodynamics predictions are performed and a very good agreement between the two are found.
Hydro-kinetic theory of thermal fluctuations is applied to a non-conformal relativistic fluid. Solving the hydro-kinetic equations for an isotropically expanding background we find that hydrodynamic fluctuations give ultraviolet divergent contributions to the energy-momentum tensor. After shifting the temperature to account for the energy of non-equilibrium modes, the remaining divergences are renormalized into local parameters, e.g. pressure and bulk viscosity. We also confirm that the renormalization of the pressure and bulk viscosity is universal by computing them for a Bjorken expansion. T…
We use principal component analysis to study the hydrodynamic attractor in Yang-Mills kinetic theory undergoing the Bjorken expansion with Color Glass Condensate initial conditions. The late time hydrodynamic attractor is characterized by a single principal component determining the overall energy scale. How it is reached is governed by the disappearance of single subleading principal component characterizing deviations of the pressure anisotropy, the screening mass and the scattering rate. We find that for wide range of couplings the approach to the hydrodynamic attractor at late times is wel…
We present basic equations of nonequilibrium thermo field dynamics of dense quantum systems. A formulation of nonequilibrium thermo field dynamics has been performed using the nonequilibrium statistical operator method by D.N.Zubarev. Generalized transfer and hydrodynamic equations of a consistent description of kinetics and hydrodynamics have been obtained in thermo field representation. To demonstrate how obtained results do work at the description of kinetics and hydrodynamics of a dense nuclear matter we consider quantum system with strongly coupled states.
In this work the collective modes of an effective kinetic theory description based on the Boltzmann equation in relaxation time approximation applicable to gauge theories at weak but finite coupling and low frequencies are studied. Real time retarded two-point correlators of the energy-momentum tensor and the R-charge current are calculated at finite temperature in flat space-times for large N gauge theories. It is found that the real time correlators possess logarithmic branch cuts which in the limit of large coupling disappear and give rise to non-hydrodynamic poles that are reminiscent of q…
Basic equations of nonequilibrium thermo field dynamics of dense quantum systems are presented. A formulation of nonequilibrium thermo field dynamics has been performed using the nonequilibrium statistical operator method by D.N.Zubarev. Hydrodynamic equations have been obtained in thermo field representation. Two levels of the description of kinetics and hydrodynamics of a dense nuclear matter are considered. The first one is a quantum system with strongly coupled states, the second one is a quark-gluon plasma. Generalized transfer equations of a consistent description of kinetics and hydrody…
In a relativistic setting, hydrodynamic calculations which include shear viscosity (which is first order in an expansion in gradients of the flow velocity) are unstable and acausal unless they also include terms to second order in gradients. To date such terms have only been computed in supersymmetric N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at infinite coupling. Here we compute these second-order hydrodynamic coefficients in weakly coupled QCD, perturbatively to leading order in the QCD coupling, using kinetic theory. We also compute them in QED and scalar lambda phi^4 theory.
In the framework of chiral kinetic theory (CKT), we consider a system of right- and left-handed Weyl fermions out of thermal equilibrium in a homogeneous weak magnetic field. We show that the Lorentz invariance implies a modification in the definition of the momentum current in the phase space, compared to the case in which the system is in global equilibrium. Using this modified momentum current, we derive the linearized conservation equations from the kinetic equation up to second order in the derivative expansion. It turns out that the eigenmodes of these equations, namely the hydrodynamic …
We develop a set of kinetic equations for hydrodynamic fluctuations which are equivalent to nonlinear hydrodynamics with noise. The hydro-kinetic equations can be coupled to existing second order hydrodynamic codes to incorporate the physics of these fluctuations, which become dominant near the critical point. We use the hydro-kinetic equations to calculate the modifications of energy momentum tensor by thermal fluctuations from the earliest moments and at late times in Bjorken expansion. The solution to the kinetic equations precisely determines the coefficient of the first fractional power (…
Recently introduced equilibrium Wigner functions for spin-one-half particles are used in the semiclassical kinetic equations to study the relation between spin polarization and vorticity. It is found, in particular, that such a framework does not necessarily imply that the thermal-vorticity and spin polarization tensors are equal. Subsequently, a procedure to formulate the hydrodynamic framework for particles with spin-one-half, based on the semiclassical expansion, is outlined.
We study the mechanisms setting the radius of convergence of hydrodynamic dispersion relations in kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation. This introduces a qualitatively new feature with respect to holography: a nonhydrodynamic sector represented by a branch cut in the retarded Green's function. In contrast with existing holographic examples, we find that the radius of convergence in the shear channel is set by a collision of the hydrodynamic pole with a branch point. In the sound channel it is set by a pole-pole collision on a non-principal sheet of the Green's function. More gen…
We determine the kinetic coefficients of ultrasoft pions using chiral perturbation theory at finite temperature close to the chiral limit. This is used to compute the axial charge diffusion and damping coefficients in the hydrodynamic effective theory for these pion waves. We show that to provide a leading order answer for these coefficients one needs to explore the dynamics of hard, soft, and ultrasoft pion modes, which are represented microscopically by the appropriate kinetic and hydrodynamic descriptions..
Using and comparing kinetic theory and second-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics, we study the non-conformal dynamics of a system undergoing Bjorken expansion. We use the concept of `free-streaming fixed lines' for scaled shear and bulk stresses in non-conformal kinetic theory and hydrodynamics, and show that these `fixed lines' behave as early-time attractors and repellors of the evolution. In the conformal limit, the free-streaming fixed lines reduce to the well-known fixed points of conformal Bjorken dynamics. A new fixed point in the free streaming regime is identified which lies at the in…
In this work, the causality and stability of a first-order relativistic dissipative hydrodynamic theory, that redefines the hydrodynamic fields from a first principle microscopic estimation, have been analyzed. A generic approach of gradient expansion for solving the relativistic transport equation has been adopted using the Chapman-Enskog iterative method. Next, the momentum dependent relaxation time approximation (MDRTA) has been employed to quantify the collision term for analytical estimation of the field correction coefficients from kinetic theory. At linear regime, in local rest frame th…
The hydro-kinetic formalism has been used as a complementary approach to solving the Stochastic Differential Equations (SDE) corresponding to noisy hydrodynamics. The hydro-kinetic formalism consists of a deterministic set of relaxation type equations that tracks the evolution of 2-point correlation functions of stochastic hydrodynamic quantities. Hence they are comparatively easier to solve than the SDEs, which are computationally intensive and need to deal with arbitrarily large gradients. This work compares the two approaches for the propagation and diffusion of conserved charge fluctuation…
We resum the non-equilibrium gradient corrections to a single-particle distribution function evolved by the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation (RTA). We first study a system undergoing Bjorken expansion and show that, for a constant relaxation time, the exact solution of the RTA Boltzmann equation at late times (i.e. after the decay of non-hydrodynamic modes) generates the Borel resummed Chapman-Enskog series. Extending this correspondence to systems without Bjorken symmetry, we construct a (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic generator for RTA kinetic theory, which is an integr…
A simple system of coupled kinetic equations for quark and gluon anisotropic systems is solved numerically. The solutions are compared with the predictions of the anisotropic hydrodynamics describing a mixture of anisotropic fluids. We find that the solutions of the kinetic equations can be well reproduced by anisotropic hydrodynamics if the initial distribution are oblate for both quarks and gluons. On the other hand, the solutions of the kinetic equations have a different qualitative behavior from those obtained in anisotropic hydrodynamics if the initial configurations are oblate-prolate or…
We present the derivation of second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics from an effective Boltzmann equation for a system consisting of quasiparticles of a single species. We consider temperature-dependent masses of the quasiparticles and devise a thermodynamically-consistent framework to formulate second-order evolution equations for shear and bulk viscous pressure corrections. The main advantage of this formulation is that one can consistently implement realistic equation of state of the medium within the framework of kinetic theory. Specializing to the case of one-dimensional purely-lo…
The total angular momentum is conserved in the evolution of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collision, and consists of two sectors: the orbital angular momentum (OAM) caused by kinetic motion, and the spin, an intrinsic degree of freedom of quarks and gluons. Microscopic scattering processes allow the conversion between these two components, hence the spin density could eventually have non-trivial influence on the QGP evolution. A hydrodynamic theory, with the spin polarization effect properly taken into account, is required to quantitatively study the polarization rate for o…
We derive relativistic dissipative spin hydrodynamics from kinetic theory featuring a nonlocal collision term using the method of moments. In this framework, the components of the spin tensor are dynamical variables which obey relaxation-type equations. We find that the corresponding relaxation times are determined by the local part of the collision term, while the nonlocal part contributes to the Navier-Stokes terms in these equations of motion. The spin relaxation time scales are comparable to those of the usual dissipative currents. Finally, the Navier-Stokes limit of the Pauli-Lubanski vec…
The kinetic freeze-out for the hydrodynamical description of relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed using a background-fluctuation splitting of the hydrodynamical fields. For a single event, the particle spectrum, or its logarithm, can be written as the sum of background part that is symmetric with respect to azimuthal rotations and longitudinal boosts and a part containing the contribution of fluctuations or deviations from the background. Using a complete orthonormal basis to characterize the initial state allows one to write the double differential harmonic flow coefficients determi…
We use effective kinetic theory to study the pre-equilibrium dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. We describe the evolution of linearized energy perturbations on top of out-of-equilibrium background to the energy-momentum tensor at a time when hydrodynamics becomes applicable. We apply this description to IP-Glasma initial conditions and find an overall smooth transition to hydrodynamics. In a phenomenologically favorable range of $η/s$ values, early time dynamics can be accurately described in terms of a few functions of a scaled time variable $τT/(η/s)$. Our framework can be readily applied to …
High-energy nuclear collisions produce a nonequilibrium plasma of quarks and gluons which thermalizes and exhibits hydrodynamic flow. There are currently no practical frameworks to connect the early particle production in classical field simulations to the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution. We build such a framework using nonequilibrium Green's functions, calculated in QCD kinetic theory, to propagate the initial energy-momentum tensor to the hydrodynamic phase. We demonstrate that this approach can be easily incorporated into existing hydrodynamic simulations, leading to stronger constraints …
We compute the gradient expansion for anisotropic hydrodynamics. The results are compared with the corresponding expansion of the underlying kinetic-theory model with the collision term treated in the relaxation time approximation. We find that a recent formulation of anisotropic hydrodynamics based on an anisotropic matching principle yields the first three terms of the gradient expansion in agreement with those obtained for the kinetic theory. This gives further support for this particular hydrodynamic model as a good approximation of the kinetic-theory approach. We further find that the gra…
We present two new results on relativistic hydrodynamics with anomalies and external electromagnetic fields, "Chiral MagnetoHydroDynamics" (CMHD). First, we study CMHD in four dimensions at second order in the derivative expansion assuming the conformal/Weyl invariance. We classify all possible independent conformal second order viscous corrections to the energy-momentum tensor and to the U(1) current in the presence of external electric and/or magnetic fields, and identify eighteen terms that originate from the triangle anomaly. We then propose and motivate the following guiding principle to …
We use the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation to study the expansion of a dilute Fermi gas at unitarity. We focus, in particular, on the approach to the hydrodynamic limit. Our main finding are: i) In the regime that has been studied experimentally hydrodynamic effects beyond the Navier-Stokes approximation are small, ii) mean field corrections to the Boltzmann equation are not important, iii) experimental data imply that freezeout occurs very late, that means that the relaxation time remains smaller than the expansion time during the entire evolution of the system, iv) th…
Anisotropic transverse flow is studied in Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions at SPS and RHIC energies. The centrality and transverse momentum dependence at midrapidity of the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 is calculated in the hydrodynamic and low density limits. Hydrodynamics is found to agree well with the RHIC data for semicentral collisions up to transverse momenta of 1-1.5 GeV/c, but it considerably overestimates the measured elliptic flow at SPS energies. The low density limit LDL is inconsistent with the measured magnitude of v_2 at RHIC energies and with the shape of its p_t-dependence at both …
In this work, we start with chiral kinetic theory and construct the spin hydrodynamic framework for a chiral spinor system. Using the 14-moment expansion formalism, we obtain the equations of motion of second-order dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics with non-trivial spin polarization density. In a chiral spinor system, the spin alignment effect could be treated in the same framework as the Chiral Vortical Effect (CVE). However, the quantum corrections due to fluid vorticity induce not only CVE terms in the vector/axial charge currents but also corrections to the stress tensor. In this fra…
Starting from Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation for the collision term and using Chapman-Enskog like expansion for distribution function close to equilibrium, we derive hydrodynamic evolution equations for the dissipative quantities directly from their definition. Although the form of the equations is identical to those obtained in traditional Israel-Stewart approaches employing Grad's 14-moment approximation and second moment of Boltzmann equation, the coefficients obtained are different. In the case of one-dimensional scaling expansion, we demonstrate that our results are…
Standard textbooks will state that hydrodynamics requires near-equilibrium to be applicable. Recently, however, out-of-equilibrium attractor solutions for hydrodynamics have been found in kinetic theory and holography in systems with a high degree of symmetry, suggesting the possibility of a genuine out-of-equilibrium formulation of hydrodynamics. This work demonstrates that attractor solutions also occur in non-conformal kinetic theory and spatially non-homogeneous systems, potentially having important implications for the interpretation of experimental data in heavy-ion and proton-proton col…
We propose to use spin hydrodynamics, a two-fluid model of spin propagation, as a generalization of the diffusion equation. We show that in the dense limit spin hydrodynamics reduces to Fick's law and the diffusion equation. In the opposite limit spin hydrodynamics is equivalent to a collisionless Boltzmann treatment of spin propagation. Spin hydrodynamics avoids unphysical effects that arise when the diffusion equation is used to describe to a strongly interacting gas with a dilute corona. We apply spin hydrodynamics to the problem of spin diffusion in a trapped atomic gas. We find that the o…
By making use of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive an Israel-Stewart type formulation of the hydrodynamic equations for a chiral relativistic plasma made of neutral particles (e.g., neutrinos). The effects of chiral asymmetry are captured by including an additional continuity equation for the axial charge, as well as the leading-order quantum corrections due to the spin of particles. In a formulation of the chiral kinetic theory used, we introduce a symmetric form of the energy-momentum tensor that is suitable for the description of a weakly nonuniform c…
We use the entropy production variational method to associate a one particle distribution function to the assumed known energy-momentum and entropy currents describing a relativistic conformal fluid. Assuming a simple form for the collision operator we find this one particle distribution function explicitly, and show that this method of linking the hydro and kinetic description is a non trivial generalization of Grad's ansatz. The resulting constitutive relations are the same as in the conformal dissipative type theories discussed in J. Peralta-Ramos and E. Calzetta, Phys. Rev. D {\bfseries 80…
A system of equations of anisotropic hydrodynamics that describes mixture of quark and gluon fluids is studied. The equations are based on the zeroth, first, and second moments of the RTA kinetic equations. Tests of this formulation are performed by comparing the results of anisotropic hydorodynamics with the exact solutions of the Boltzmann equations for a mixture of fluids in the Bjorken flow limit. One finds a very good agreement between the hydrodynamic and kinetic-theory results.
Anisotropic-hydrodynamics framework is used to describe a mixture of quark and gluon fluids. The effects of quantum statistics, finite quark mass, and finite baryon number density are taken into account. The results of anisotropic hydrodynamics are compared with exact solutions of the coupled kinetic equations for quarks and gluons in the relaxation time approximation. The overall very good agreement between the hydrodynamic and kinetic-theory results is found.
Second-order relativistic hydrodynamics is surprisingly predictive, even in the presence of large gradients. The hydrodynamic expansion from the method of moments does not require a gradient expansion, but it is intrinsically bound to the classic nature of relativistic kinetic theory. In this work a modified version of the method of moments is applied the Wigner distribution (the quantum precursor of the distribution function) to recover a systematically improvable hydrodynamic expansion, avoiding the divergences that would otherwise appear in the quantum case. The convergence of the regulariz…
We study the thermal dilepton and photon production from relativistic heavy ion collisions in presence of viscosities by employing the recently developed second order dissipative hydrodynamic formulation estimated within a quasiparticle description of thermal QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) medium. The sensitivity of shear and bulk viscous pressures to the temperature dependence of relaxation time is analyzed within one dimensional boost invariant expansion of quark gluon plasma (QGP).The dissipative corrections to the phase-space distribution functions upto first order in gradients are obtained…
A system of equations for anisotropic hydrodynamics is derived that describes a mixture of anisotropic quark and gluon fluids. The consistent treatment of the zeroth, first and second moments of the kinetic equations allows us to construct a new framework with more general forms of the anisotropic phase-space distribution functions than those used before. In this way, the main difficiencies of the previous formulations of anisotropic hydrodynamics for mixtures have been overcome and the good agreement with the exact kinetic-theory results is obtained.
We report part of our recent work on viscous hydrodynamics with consistent phase space distribution $f(x,\p)$ for freeze out. We develop the gradient expansion formalism based on kinetic theory, and with the constraints from the comparison between hydrodynamics and kinetic theory, viscous corrections to $f(x,\p)$ can be consistently determined order by order. Then with the obtained $f(x,\p)$, second order viscous hydrodynamical calculations are carried out for elliptic flow $v_2$.
We derive system of equations describing fluidity of the medium consisting of non-relativistic particles with finite mass-widths. For that we use expressions for the kinetic Noether 4-current and the Noether energy-momentum tensor being conserved provided one uses self-consistent approximations to the gradient expanded Kadanoff-Baym equations. Kinetic coefficients entering equations of non-ideal hydrodynamics of resonances are obtained in terms of the real and imaginary parts of the self-energies within a relaxation time approximation.
We exactly solve the one-dimensional boost-invariant Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation for arbitrary shear viscosity. The results are compared with the predictions of viscous and anisotropic hydrodynamics. Studying different non-equilibrium cases and comparing the exact kinetic-theory results to the second-order viscous hydrodynamics results we find that recent formulations of second-order viscous hydrodynamics agree better with the exact solution than the standard Israel-Stewart approach. Additionally, we find that, given the appropriate connection between the kinetic an…
