Periodic structures consisting of alternating layers of positive index and negative index materials possess a novel band gap at the frequency at which the average refractive index is zero. We show that in the presence of a Kerr nonlinearity, this zero-n gap can switch from low transmission to a perfectly transmitting state, forming a nonlinear resonance or gap soliton in the process. This zero-n gap soliton is omnidirectional in contrast to the usual Bragg gap soliton of positive index periodic structures
We numerically study the nonlocal gap solitons in parity-time (PT) symmetric optical lattices built into a nonlocal self-focusing medium. We state the existence, stability, and propagation dynamics of such PT gap solitons in detail. Simulated results show that there exist stable gap soltions. The influences of the degree of nonlocality on the soliton power, the energy flow density and the stable region of the PT gap solitons are also examined.
We analyze the existence, stability, and mobility of gap solitons in a periodic photonic structure with nonlocal nonlinearity. Within the Bragg region of band gaps, gap solitons exhibit better stability and higher mobility due to the combinations of non-locality effect and the oscillation nature of Bloch waves. Using linear stability analysis and calculating the Peierls-Nabarro potentials, we demonstrate that gap solitons can revive a non-trivial elastic-like collision even in the periodic systems with the help of nonlocal nonlinearity. Such interesting behaviors of gap solitons in nonlocal no…
A gap soliton is a solitonic state existing inside the band gap of an infinite-periodic exciton-polariton condensate (EPC). The combination of surface states and gap solitons forms the so named surface gap solitons (SGSs). We analyze the existence of SGSs near the interface between uniform and semi-infinite periodic EPCs. We find that SGSs exist only when the system is excited by a pump with low power and small width. As the pump power or width increases, SGSs become unstable.
We generalize the concept of nonlinear periodic structures to systems that show arbitrary spacetime variations of the refractive index. Nonlinear pulse propagation through these spatiotemporal photonic crystals can be described, for shallow nonstationary gratings, by coupled mode equations which are a generalization of the traditional equations used for stationary photonic crystals. Novel gap soliton solutions are found by solving a modified massive Thirring model. They represent the missing link between the gap solitons in static photonic crystals and resonance solitons found in dynamic grati…
By integrating the full Maxwell's equations we predict the existence of gap solitons in a quadratic, Fabry-Perot negative index cavity. An intense, fundamental pump pulse shifts the band structure that forms when magnetic and electric plasma frequencies are different so that a weak, second harmonic pulse initially tuned inside the gap is almost entirely transmitted. The process is due cascading, which occurs far from phase matching conditions, and causes pulse compression. A nonlinear polarization spawns a dark soliton, while a nonlinear magnetization produces a bright soliton.
We study excitation of gap solitons under the conditions of coherent perfect absorption (CPA). Our system consists of a symmetric periodic structure with alternating Kerr nonlinear and linear layers, illuminated from both the ends. We show near-total transfer of incident light energy into the gap solitons resulting in null-scattering. We also report on the nonlinear super-scattering (SS) states. Both the CPA and the SS states are shown to be characterized by typical field distributions. Both the exact and the approximate results (based on nonlinear characteristic matrix method) are presented, …
In the theory of optical gap solitons, slowly-moving finite-amplitude Lorentzian solutions are found to mediate the transition from bright to coexistent dark-antidark solitary wave pairs when the laser frequency is detuned out of the proper edge of a dynamical photonic bandgap. Catastrophe theory is applied to give a geometrical description of this strongly asymmetrical 'morphing' process.
We study both theoretically and experimentally the effect of nonlinearity on topologically protected linear interface modes in a photonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice. It is shown that under either focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, this linear topological mode of the SSH lattice turns into a family of topological gap solitons. These solitons are stable. However, they exhibit only a low amplitude and power and are thus weakly nonlinear, even when the bandgap of the SSH lattice is wide. As a consequence, if the initial beam has modest or high power, it will either delocalize, or evolve …
We report on the observation of various bound states of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring laser at near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion (GVD). The generated DM solitons are characterized by their Gaussian-like spectral profile with no sidebands, which is distinct from those of the conventional solitons generated in fiber lasers with large net negative cavity GVD, of the parabolic pulses generated in fiber lasers with positive cavity GVD and negligible gain saturation and bandwidth limiting, and of the gain-guided solitons generated in…
Parity-time(PT) symmetric lattices have been widely studied in controlling the flow of waves, and recently moiré superlattices, connecting the periodic and non-periodic potentials, are introduced for exploring unconventional physical properties in physics; while the combination of both and nonlinear waves therein remains unclear. Here, we report a theoretical survey of nonlinear wave localizations in PT symmetric moiré optical lattices, with the aim of revealing localized gap modes of different types and their stabilization mechanism. We uncover the formation, properties, and dynamics of funda…
Electromagnetic localization and existence of gap solitons in nonlinear metamaterials, which exhibit a stop band in their linear spectral response, is theoretically investigated. For a self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity, the equation for the electric field envelope with carrier frequency in the stop band - where the magnetic permeability $μ(ω)$ is positive and the dielectric permittivity $ε(ω)$ is negative - is described by a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a dispersive nonlinear term. A family of standing and moving localized waves for both electric and magnetic fields is found, and the rol…
We demonstrate the first fully controlled generation of immobile and slow spatial gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems with band-gap spectra, and reveal the key features of gap solitons which distinguish them from conventional counterparts, including a dynamical transformation of gap solitons due to nonlinear inter-band coupling. We also predict theoretically and confirm experimentally the effect of anomalous steering of gap solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices.
We present and theoretically investigate a dispersion engineered GaP-OI microresonator containing a partially-etched gap of 250 nm x 410 nm in a 600 nm x 2990 nm waveguide. This gap enables a 3.25 μm wide anomalous dispersion spectral span covering both the near-infrared and the mid-infrared spectra. This anomalous dispersion is manifested by two mechanisms, being the hybridization of the fundamental TE modes around 1550 nm and the geometric dispersion of the higher order TE mode around the 3100 nm wavelengths, respectively. Two Kerr soliton combs can be numerically generated with 101 GHz and …
We elucidate the properties of mixed-gap vector surface solitons supported by the interface between a uniform medium and an optical lattice imprinted in a Kerr-type nonlinear media. The components of such mixed-gap solitons emerge from different gaps of lattice spectrum and their mutual trapping results in the formation of stable vector states. The unstable soliton component is stabilized by the cross-coupling with the stable component. We show that vector mixed-gap surface solitons exhibit a new combination of properties of vectorial surface waves and gap solitons.
We analyze nonlinear collective effects near surfaces of semi-infinite periodic systems with multi-gap transmission spectra and introduce a novel concept of multi-gap surface solitons as mutually trapped surface states with the components associated with different spectral gaps. We find numerically discrete surface modes in semi-infinite binary waveguide arrays which can support simultaneously two types of discrete solitons, and analyze different multi-gap states including the soliton-induced waveguides with the guided modes from different gaps and composite vector solitons.
Solitons are shape preserving waveforms that are ubiquitous across nonlinear dynamical systems and fall into two separate classes, that of bright solitons, formed in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime, and `dark solitons' in the normal dispersion regime. Both types of soliton have been observed in BEC, hydrodynamics, polaritons, and mode locked lasers, but have been particularly relevant to the generation of chipscale microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs), used in numerous system level applications in timing, spectroscopy, and communications. For microcombs, both bright…
We use the generalized Lugiato-Lefever model to investigate the phenomenon of Kerr optical frequency comb generation when group-velocity dispersion is null. In that case, the first dispersion term that plays a leading role is third-order dispersion. We show that this term is sufficient to allow for the existence of both bright and dark solitons. We identify the areas in the parameter space where both kind of solitons can be excited inside the resonator. We also unveil a phenomenon of hysteretic switching between these two types of solitons when the power of the pump laser is cyclically varied.
The effect of dispersion or diffraction on zero-velocity solitons is studied for the generalized massive Thirring model describing a nonlinear optical fiber with grating or parallel-coupled planar waveguides with misaligned axes. The Thirring solitons existing at zero dispersion/diffraction are shown numerically to be separated by a finite gap from three isolated soliton branches. Inside the gap, there is an infinity of multi-soliton branches. Thus, the Thirring solitons are structurally unstable. In another parameter region (far from the Thirring limit), solitons exist everywhere.
We suggest a novel concept of diffraction management in waveguide arrays and predict the existence of discrete gap solitons that possess the properties of both conventional discrete and Bragg grating solitons. We demonstrate that both the soliton velocity and propagation direction can be controlled by varying the input light intensity.
The existence and stability of defect solitons supported by parity-time (PT) symmetric superlattices with nonlocal nonlinearity are investigated. In the semi-infinite gap, in-phase solitons are found to exist stably for positive or zero defects, but can not exist in the presence of negative defects with strong nonlocality. In the first gap, out-of-phase solitons are stable for positive or zero defects, whereas in-phase solitons are stable for negative defects. The dependence of soliton stabilities on modulation depth of the PT potentials is studied. It is interesting that solitons can exist st…
We have investigated mixed-gap vector solitons involving incoherently coupled fundamental and dipole components in a parity-time (PT) symmetric lattice with saturable nonlinearity. For the focusing case, vector solitons emerge from the semi-infinite and the first finite gaps, while for the defocusing case, vector solitons emerge from the first finite and the second finite gaps. For both cases, we find that stronger saturable nonlinearity is relative to sharper increase/decrease of soliton power with propagation constant and to narrower existence domain of vector solitons. This finding is helpf…
We study the formation of gap solitons in the presence of parametric pump. It is shown that parametric pump can stabilize stationary solitons continuously emitting dispersive waves. The resonant interactions of the radiation and the solitons are studied and it is shown that the solitons can be effectively controlled by the radiation. In particular it is shown that the solitons can collide or to get pinned to inhomogeneities due to the interactions mediated by the resonant radiation.
We consider linear and nonlinear modes pinned to a grating-free (gapless) layer placed between two symmetric or asymmetric semi-infinite Bragg gratings (BGs), with a possible phase shift between them, in a medium with the uniform Kerr nonlinearity. The asymmetry is defined by a difference between bandgap widths in the two BGs. In the linear system, exact defect modes (DMs) are found. Composite gap solitons pinned to the central layer are found too, in analytical and numerical forms, in the nonlinear model. In the asymmetric system, existence boundaries for the DMs and gap solitons, due to the …
We report on the first experimental observation of discrete gap solitons in binary arrays of optical waveguides. We observe the soliton generation when the inclination angle of an input beam is slightly above the Bragg angle, and show that the propagation direction of the emerging gap soliton depends on the input power as a result of an inter-band momentum exchange.
We show that gap-acoustic solitons, i.e., optical gap solitons with electrostrictive coupling to sound modes, can be produced with velocities down to less than 2.5% of the speed of light using a fiber Bragg grating that is linearly coupled to a non-Bragg fiber over a finite domain. Forward- and backward-moving light pulses in the non-Bragg fiber that reach the coupling region simultaneously couple into the Bragg fiber and form a moving soliton, which then propagates beyond the coupling region.
We experimentally demonstrate the formation and stable propagation of various types of discrete temporal solitons in an optical fiber system. Pulses interacting with a time-periodic potential and defocusing nonlinearity are shown to form gap solitons and nonlinear truncated Bloch waves. Multi-pulse solitons with defects, as well as novel structures composed of a strong soliton riding on a weaker truncated nonlinear Bloch wave are shown to propagate over up to eleven coupling lengths. The nonlinear dynamics of all pulse structures is monitored over the full propagation distance which provides d…
The existence and stability of defect solitons in parity-time (PT) symmetric optical lattices with nonlocal nonlinearity are reported. It is found that nonlocality can expand the stability region of defect solitons. For positive or zero defects, fundamental and dipole solitons can exist stably in the semi-infinite gap and the first gap, respectively. For negative defects, fundamental solitons can be stable in both the semi-infinite gap and the first gap, whereas dipole solitons are unstable in the first gap. There exist a maximum degree of nonlocal nonlinearity, above which the fundamental sol…
We demonstrate numerically that partially incoherent light can be trapped in the spectral band gaps of a photonic lattice, creating partially incoherent multi-component spatial optical solitons in a self-defocusing nonlinear periodic medium. We find numerically such incoherent multi-gap optical solitons and discuss how to generate them in experiment by interfering incoherent light beams at the input of a nonlinear periodic medium.
We report the existence, and study mobility and interactions of gap polariton solitons in a microcavity with a periodic potential, where the light field is strongly coupled to excitons. Gap solitons are formed due to the interplay between the repulsive exciton-exciton interaction and cavity dispersion. The analysis is carried out in an analytical form, using the coupled-mode (CM) approximation, and also by means of numerical methods.
The propagation properties of optical fields in linear and nonlinear parity-time symmetric microring coupled resonator optical waveguides are studied. The effects described include the existence of symmetry breaking thresholds, the propagation of gap solitons in nonlinear transmission lines and the existence of quasi stable propagation regimes outside the broken symmetry regions.
We introduce novel optical solitons that consist of a periodic and a spatially localized components coupled nonlinearly via cross-phase modulation. The spatially localized optical field can be treated as a gap soliton supported by the optically-induced nonlinear grating. We find different types of these band-gap composite solitons and demonstrate their dynamical stability.
We report results of the investigation of gap solitons (GSs) in the generic model of a periodically modulated Bragg grating (BG), which includes periodic modulation of the BG chirp or local refractive index, and periodic variation of the local reflectivity. We demonstrate that, while the previously studied reflectivity modulation strongly destabilizes all solitons, the periodic chirp modulation, which is a novel feature, stabilizes a new family of double-peak fundamental BGs in the side bandgap at negative frequencies (gap No. -1), and keeps solitons stable in the central bandgap (No. 0). The …
We address the impact of asymmetric nonlocal diffusion nonlinearity on the properties of gap solitons supported by photorefractive crystal with an imprinted optical lattice. We reveal how the asymmetric nonlocal response alters the domains of existence and the stability of solitons originating from different gaps. We find that in such media gap solitons cease to exist above a threshold of the nonlocality degree. We discuss how the interplay between nonlocality and lattice strength modifies the gap soliton mobility.
We introduce a new species of gap solitons (GSs) supported by an azimuthally modulated guiding ring in defocusing cubic media. The periodicity in the azimuthal direction strongly modifies properties and existence domains of GSs. In addition to the fundamental solitons, we report even and twisted bound states. The former type is found to be stable, while the twisted states are always unstable in defocusing media.
We analyze the existence, stability, and mobility of gap solitons (GSs) in a periodic photonic structure built into a nonlocal self-defocusing medium. Counter-intuitively, the GSs are supported even by a highly nonlocal nonlinearity, which makes the system quasi-linear. Unlike local models, the variational approximation (VA) predicts the GSs in a good agreement with numerical findings, due to the suppression of undulating tails of the solitons.
We report on the first observation of surface gap solitons, recently predicted to exist at the interface between uniform and periodic dielectric media with defocusing nonlinearity [Ya.V. Kartashov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 073901 (2006). We demonstrate strong self-trapping at the edge of a LiNbO_3 waveguide array and the formation of staggered surface solitons with propagation constant inside the first photonic band gap. We study the crossover between linear repulsion and nonlinear attraction at the surface, revealing the mechanism of nonlinearity-mediated stabilization of the surface gap m…
We analyze the existence, stability, and internal modes of gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a sinusoidal potential, such as photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, optically-induced photonic lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto an optical lattice. We study bifurcations of gap solitons from the band edges of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum, and show that gap solitons can appear near all lower or upper band edges of the spectrum, for focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, respectively. We show that, in general, two types of gap …
Properties of localized states on array of BEC confined to a potential, representing superposition of linear and nonlinear optical lattices are investigated. For a shallow lattice case the coupled mode system has been derived. The modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves is analyzed. We revealed new types of gap solitons and studied their stability. For the first time a moving soliton solution has been found. Analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with jointly acting linear and nonlinear periodic potentials.
The existence of a novel type of solitons in periodic Kerr media constructed as superposition of noninteracting gap-solitons of different kinds (bright, dark and periodic) is first demonstrated. The periodic modulation of the nonlinearity is used to suppress the cross phase modulation between components to allow the superimposed beam to propagate for long distances.
We demonstrate existence of waves localized at the interface of two nonlinear periodic media with different coefficients of the cubic nonlinearity via the one-dimensional Gross--Pitaevsky equation. We call these waves the surface gap solitons (SGS). In the case of smooth symmetric periodic potentials, we study analytically bifurcations of SGS's from standard gap solitons and determine numerically the maximal jump of the nonlinearity coefficient allowing for the SGS existence. We show that the maximal jump vanishes near the thresholds of bifurcations of gap solitons. In the case of continuous p…
In the present work, we consider the dynamics of dark solitons as one mode of a defocusing photorefractive lattice coupled with bright solitons as a second mode of the lattice. Our investigation is motivated by an experiment which illustrates that such coupled states can exist with both components in the first gap of the linear band spectrum. This finding is further extended by the examination of different possibilities from a theoretical perspective, such as symbiotic ones where the bright component is supported by states of the dark component in the first or second gap, or non-symbiotic ones…
Out-of-plane gap solitons in 2D photonic crystals are optical beams localized in the plane of periodicity of the medium and delocalized in the orthogonal direction, in which they propagate with a nonzero velocity. We study such gap solitons as described by the Kerr nonlinear Maxwell system. Using a model of the nonlinear polarization, which does not generate higher harmonics, we obtain a closed curl-curl problem for the fundamental harmonic of the gap soliton. For gap solitons with frequencies inside spectral gaps and in an asymptotic vicinity of a gap edge we use a slowly varying envelope app…
We demonstrate that a single sub-cycle optical pulse can be generated when a pulse with a few optical cycles penetrates through resonant two-level dense media with a subwavelength structure. The single-cycle gap soliton phenomenon in the full Maxwell-Bloch equations without the frame of slowly varying envelope and rotating wave approximations is observed. Our study shows that the subwavelength structure can be used to suppress the frequency shift caused by intrapulse four-wave mixing in continuous media and supports the formation of single-cycle gap solitons even in the case when the structure…
Optical gap solitons, which exist due to a balance of nonlinearity and dispersion due to a Bragg grating, can couple to acoustic waves through electrostriction. This gives rise to a new species of ``gap-acoustic'' solitons (GASs), for which we find exact analytic solutions. The GAS consists of an optical pulse similar to the optical gap soliton, dressed by an accompanying phonon pulse. Close to the speed of sound, the phonon component is large. In subsonic (supersonic) solitons, the phonon pulse is a positive (negative) density variation. Coupling to the acoustic field damps the solitons' osci…
The properties of optical solitons in periodic nonlinear media are reviewed. The emphasis is on solitons in periodically refractive media (Bragg gratings) incorporating a periodic set of thin layers of two-level systems resonantly interacting with the field. Such media support a variety of bright and dark `gap solitons' propagating in the band gaps of the Bragg gratings, as well as their multi - dimensional analogs (light bullets). These novel gap solitons differ substantially from their counterparts in periodic media with either cubic or quadratic off-resonant nonlinearities.
Topological photonics has emerged recently as a novel approach for realizing robust optical circuitry, and the study of nonlinear effects in topological photonics is expected to open the door for tunability of photonic structures with topological properties. Here, we study the topological edge states and topological gap solitons which reside in the same bandgaps described by the nonlinear Dirac model, in both one- and two-dimensions. We reveal strong nonlinear interaction between those dissimilar topological modes manifested in the excitation of the topological edge states by scattered gap sol…
We analyze nonlinear collective effects in periodic systems with multi-gap transmission spectra such as light in waveguide arrays or Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. We demonstrate that the inter-band interactions in nonlinear periodic gratings can be efficiently managed by controlling their geometry, and predict novel types of discrete vector solitons supported by nonlinear coupling between different bandgaps and study their stability.
We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.
We present hitherto unknown forms of soliton dynamics in the forbidden frequency gap of a Bragg reflector, modified by periodic layers of near-resonant two-level systems (TLS). Remarkably, even extremely low TLS densities create an allowed band within the forbidden gap. This spectrum gives rise, for any Bragg reflectivity, to a vast family of stable gap solitons, both standing and moving, having a unique analytic form, an arbitrary pulse area, and inelastic collision properties. These findings suggest new possibilities of transmission control, noise filtering or ``dynamical cavities'' (self-tr…
A long wavelength optical lattice is generated in a two-level medium by low-frequency contrapropagating beams. Then a short wave length gap soliton generated by evanescent boundary instability (supratransmission) undergoes a dynamics shown to obey the Newton equation of the parametrically driven pendulum, hence presenting extremely rich, possibly chaotic, dynamical behavior. The theory is sustained by numerical simulations and provides an efficient tool to study soliton trajectories.

Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons (CSs) are persisting pulses of light that manifest themselves in driven optical resonators and that have attracted significant attention over the last decade. Whilst the vast majority of studies have revolved around conditions where the resonator exhibits strong anomalous dispersion, recent studies have shown that solitons with unique characteristics and dynamics can arise under conditions of near-zero-dispersion driving. Here we report on experimental studies of the existence and stability dynamics of Kerr CSs under such conditions. In particular, we experimen…
It was recently found that, under the action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman splitting (ZS), binary BEC with intrinsic cubic nonlinearity supports families of gap solitons, provided that the kinetic energy is negligible in comparison with the SOC and ZS terms. We demonstrate that, also under the action of SOC and ZS, a similar setting may be introduced for BEC with two components representing different atomic states, resonantly coupled by microwave radiation, while the Poisson equation accounts for the feedback of the two-component atomic wave function onto the radiation. The micro…
We study fundamental and compound gap solitons (GSs) of matter waves in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices (OLs) in a three-dimensional (3D) weak-radial-confinement regime, which corresponds to realistic experimental conditions in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In this regime GSs exhibit nontrivial radial structures. Associated with each 3D linear spectral band exists a family of fundamental gap solitons that share a similar transverse structure with the Bloch waves of the corresponding linear band. GSs with embedded vorticity $m$ may exist \emph{inside} bands corresponding to other valu…
We study resonant radiation generated by bound solitons in a twin-core fiber near zero-dispersion wavelength, in the presence of higher order dispersion terms. We propose a theoretical description of dispersive wave generation mechanism and derive resonance conditions. The presence of third order dispersion term leads to generation of polychromatic dispersive radiation and transition from the regime of center of mass oscillations to the regime of amplitude oscillations. Such a transition is not reproduced in the case of symmetric fourth order dispersion.
The physical mechanism underlying scattering properties of matter wave gap-solitons by linear optical lattice defects is investigated. The occurrence of repeated reflection, transmission and trapping regions for increasing strengths of an optical lattice defect are shown to be due to impurity modes inside the defect potential with chemical potentials and numbers of atoms matching corresponding quantities of an incoming gap-soliton. For gap-solitons with chemical potentials very close to band edges, the number of resonances observed in the scattering coincides with the number of bound states wh…
