We present a quantum mechanical study of the diatomic hydrogen $H(^{2}S)$ and oxygen $O(^{3}P)$ collision and energy transfer for its four molecular symmetry $(X^{2}Π, ^{2}Σ^{-}, ^{4}Π, ^{4}Σ^{-})$, which is important for the investigation of many processes of astrophysical and chemical interests including the one on molecular cooling, trapping or Bose-Einstein condensation. We compute the rovibrational spectra for the $(X^{2}Π)$ state and the resulting bound states are in an excellent agreement with experimental data for the energy range lower than the dissociation threshold. We calculate the phase shifts of its partial-waves, the total cross section, and the differential cross section. They are all well-structured because of the shape of its potential curve. We do the similar studies for the other three dissociative states $(^{2}Σ^{-}, ^{4}Π, ^{4}Σ^{-})$. Finally, we have also decided the thermal rate coefficients for the hydrogen and oxygen collision for its four individual states.
For the prototypical diatomic-molecule - diatomic molecule interactions H2-HX and H2-X2, where X = F, Cl, Br, quantum-chemical ab initio calculations are carried out on grids of the configuration space, which permit a spherical-harmonics representation of the potential energy surfaces (PESs). Dimer geometries are considered for sets of representative leading configurations, and the PESs are analyzed in terms of isotropic and anisotropic contributions. The leading configurations are individuated by selecting a minimal set of mutual orientations of molecules needed to build the spherical-harmoni…
Current situation in studies of lifetimes of excited rovibronic levels for the H2, D2, T2, HD, HT, and DT molecules is analyzed. All measured values of the lifetimes (792 data for 618 different vibro-rotational levels of 33 electronic states), reported in 61 publications before November 2014, are compiled and listed in the tabular format together with annotated bibliography. Experimental data are now available for the H2, HD and D2 molecules only. The data collected in the present work show fragmentariness of experimental data. For vast majority of the levels the lifetime value was reported in…
Within the framework of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the ro-vibrational energy spectra of the improved deformed exponential-type potential model are obtained using the Greene-Aldrich approximation scheme and an appropriate coordinate transformation. With the help of the energy spectra, analytical expressions of the vibrational partition function and other thermodynamic functions are derived by employing the Poisson summation formula. These thermodynamic functions are studied for the electronic states of hydrogen dimer, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dimer and lithium hydride diatomic molecul…
Solar water splitting provides a promising path for sustainable hydrogen production and solar energy storage. One of the greatest challenges towards large-scale utilization of this technology is reducing the hydrogen production cost. The conventional electrolyzer architecture, where hydrogen and oxygen are co-produced in the same cell, gives rise to critical challenges in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting cells that directly convert solar energy and water to hydrogen. Here we overcome these challenges by separating the hydrogen and oxygen cells. The ion exchange in our cells is mediat…
A close coupling quantum-mechanical calculation is performed for rotational energy transfer in a HD+HD collision at very low energy, down to the ultracold temperatures: $T \sim 10^{-8}$ K. A global six-dimensional H$_2$-H$_2$ potential energy surface is adopted from a previous work [Boothroyd {\it et al.}, J. Chem. Phys., {\bf 116}, 666 (2002).] State-resolved integral cross sections $σ_{ij\rightarrow i'j'}(\varepsilon_{kin})$ of different quantum-mechanical rotational transitions $ij\rightarrow i'j'$ in the HD molecules and corresponding state-resolved thermal rate coefficients $k_{ij\rightar…
We propose to use diatomic molecular ions to search for strongly enhanced effects of variation of fundamental constants. The relative enhancement occurs in transitions between nearly degenerate levels of different nature. Since the trapping techniques for molecular ions have already been developed, the molecules HBr$^+$, HI$^+$, Br$^+_2$, I$^+_2$, IBr$^+$, ICl$^+$, and IF$^+$ are very promising candidates for such future studies.
Metallization and dissociation are key transformations in diatomic molecules at high densities particularly significant for modeling giant planets. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomistic modeling, we demonstrate that in halogens, the formation of a \textit{connected} molecular structure takes place at pressures well below metallization. Here we show that the iodine diatomic molecule first elongates of $\sim$0.007 Å~up to a critical pressure of $P_c$ $\backsim$7~GPa developing bonds between molecules. Then its length continuously decreases with pressure up to 15-20~GPa. Universal tre…
Experimental measurements have reported ultra-fast and radius-dependent water transport in carbon nanotubes which are absent in boron nitride nanotubes. Despite considerable effort, the origin of this contrasting (and fascinating) behaviour is not understood. Here, with the aid of machine learning-based molecular dynamics simulations that deliver first-principles accuracy, we investigate water transport in single-wall carbon and boron nitride nanotubes. Our simulations reveal a large, radius-dependent hydrodynamic slippage on both materials with water experiencing indeed a $\approx 5$ times lo…
Here we show that the Coulomb interaction between violations of the Bernal-Fowler rules leads to a temperature induced step-wise increase in their concentration by 6-7 orders of magnitude. This first-order phase transition is accompanied by commensurable decrease in the relaxation time and can be interpreted as melting of the hydrogen bond network. The new phase with the melted hydrogen lattice and survived oxygen one is unstable in the bulk of ice, and further drastic increase in the concentrations of oxygen interstitials and vacancies accomplishes the ice melting. The fraction of broken hydr…
The experimental study of hydrogen bonds and their symmetrisation under extreme conditions is predominantly driven by diffraction methods, despite challenges of localising or probing the hydrogen subsystems directly. Until recently, H-bond symmetrisation has been addressed in terms of either nuclear quantum effects, spin crossovers or direct structural transitions; often leading to contradictory interpretations when combined. Here, we present high-resolution \textit{in-situ} $^1$H-NMR experiments in diamond anvil cells investigating a wide range of hydrogen bonded systems at pressure ranges of…
The current state of the art in direct water splitting in photo-electrochemical cells (PECs) is presented together with: (i) a case study of water splitting using a simple solar cell with the most efficient water splitting electrodes and (ii) a detailed mechanism analysis. Detailed analysis of the energy balance and efficiency of solar hydrogen production are presented. The role of hydrogen peroxide formation as an intermediate in oxygen evolution reaction is newly revealed and explains why an oxygen evolution is not taking place at the thermodynamically expected 1.23 V potential. Solar hydrog…
Due to the energy supply pressure caused by non-renewable fuels as well as the environment-related issues, the efficient conversion of solar-chemical energy via photo-induced water splitting is one of the promising strategies to address the existing problems. To strengthen the overall catalytic performance of photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) evolution, the selection and construction of cocatalysts are crucial. Recently, the semiconductor photocatalysts have been well modified with the loaded cocatalysts as the active sites by extending the light harvest, promoting the electron sepa…
We excite diatomic oxygen and nitrogen to high rotational states with an optical centrifuge and study their dynamics in external magnetic field. Ion imaging is employed to directly visualize, and follow in time, the rotation plane of molecular superrotors. The two different mechanisms of interaction between the magnetic field and the molecular angular momentum in paramagnetic oxygen and non-magnetic nitrogen lead to the qualitatively different behaviour. In nitrogen, we observe the precession of the molecular angular momentum around the field vector. In oxygen, strong spin-rotation coupling re…
Bulk nanobubbles (NBs) generated electrochemically by short voltage pulses of alternating polarity behave differently from those produced by regular methods. Only bubbles smaller than $200\;$nm are formed in the process and their concentration is very high. Moreover, the bubbles containing both H2 and O2 gases disappear quickly via the combustion reaction, although the reaction in such a small volume cannot happen according to the classical combustion theory. Experimental facts about these unusual NBs are reviewed and current understanding of the observed phenomena is provided. Visualisation m…
The object of this study is the kinetic process of solid-liquid first-order phase transition - melting of carbon dioxide CS-I hydrate with various cavity occupation ratios. The work was done within a framework of study on the local structure of water molecules. These include the time depending change of the short-range order at temperatures close to the melting point and comparison with hexagonal ice structure. Using molecular dynamics method, dependencies of the internal energy of the studied systems on the time of heating were found. Jumps in the internal energy of solids in the range at 275…
A recent paper by Zeidler et al. (PRL 107, 144501 (2011)) describes a neutron scattering experiment on water in which oxygen isotope substitution is successfully achieved for the first time. Differences between scattering patterns with different oxygen isotopes give a combination of the O-O and O-H (or O-D) structure factors, and the method elegantly minimizes some of the problematic inelasticity effects associated with neutron scattering from hydrogen. Particular conclusions of the new work are that the OH bond length in the light water molecule is about 0.005A longer than the same bond in he…
The Fourier component of the potential energy of interaction of an atom with an atom is represented as a polynomial of the fourth degree from the atomic form factor. A numerical calculation was performed for the atomic form factor in the approximation of hydrogen-like wave functions. It is shown that taking the Pauli principle into account leads to two local potential wells, which are separated by a potential barrier. It was shown that this model gives satisfactory agreement with the experiment in the depth of the potential well, but its position and width differ from the results of the experi…
This account presents author's opinion on the mechanism of the H-abstraction from methane by the [FeO](2+) group. In the course of reaction with hydrogen, the Fe-O bond in the ferryl configuration becomes elongated causing transfer of the spin-up electron from one of doubly occupied bonding orbitals leaving behind single spin-down electron on oxygen. This oxygen in so-formed oxyl configuration of the [FeO](2+) moiety then easily accept the spin-up hydrogen atom from methane in the same way as the radical-localized oxygen does. This mechanism is compared with the scheme in which the hydrogen is…
Compositionally tunable vanadium oxyhydrides Sr2VO4-xHx (x = 0 - 1) without considerable anion vacancy were synthesized by high-pressure solid state reaction. The crystal structures and their properties were characterized by powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The hydrogen anions selectively replaced equatorial oxygen sites in the VO6 layers via statistical substitution of hydrogen in the low x region (x < 0.2). A new orthorhombic phase (Immm) with an almost entirely hydro…
We analyze the data of purposeful rupture experiments with LOx and LH2 tanks, the Hydrogen-Oxygen Vertical Impact (HOVI) tests that were performed to clarify the ignition mechanisms, the explosive power of cryogenic H2/Ox mixtures under different conditions, and to elucidate the puzzling source of the initial formation of flames near the intertank section during the Challenger disaster. We carry out a physics-based analysis of general explosions scenarios for cryogenic gaseous H2/Ox mixtures and determine their realizability conditions, using the well-established simplified models from the det…
Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and formaldehyde (H2CO) are key precursors to biomolecules such as nucleobases and amino acids in planetary atmospheres; However, many reactions which produce and destroy these species in atmospheres containing CO2 and H2O are still missing from the literature. We use a quantum chemistry approach to find these missing reactions and calculate their rate coefficients using canonical variational transition state theory and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/master equation theory at the BHandHLYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. We calculate the rate coefficients for 126 total react…
Recently, hydrogen generation by water-splitting photocatalysts is attracting attention as a sustainable and clean energy resource. Photocatalytic hydrogen-generation systems are much simpler, cheaper, and easier to scale up than the coupled systems of electrolysis and solar cells, wind-power generation, etc. However, photocatalytic hydrogen generation is currently inefficient. This paper proposes the monolayer of boron phosphide as a stable highly-efficient water-splitting photocatalyst by high-precision density-functional theory calculations using a HSE06 functional with a solvent effect. Bio-oil molecule assessment is essential for the sustainable development of chemicals and transportation fuels. These oxygenated molecules have adequate carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms that can be used for developing new value-added molecules (chemicals or transportation fuels). One motivation for our study stems from the fact that a liquid phase upgrading using mineral acid is a cost-effective chemical transformation. In this chemical upgrading process, adding a proton (positively charged atomic hydrogen) to an oxygen atom is a central step. The protonation energies of oxygen atoms in a mo…
The pathway of the oxygen evolution reaction at the Pt(111)/water interface is disclosed through constant Fermi level molecular dynamics. Upon the application of a positive bias potential H 2 O ads and OH ads adsorbates are found to arrange in a hexagonal lattice with an irregular alternation. Increasing further the electrode potential then induces the oxygen evolution reaction, which is found to proceed through a hydrogen peroxide intermediate. Calculation of the associated overpotential shows a reduction of 0.2 eV compared to the associative mechanism. This result highlights the forcefullnes…
