The classical pump-probe scheme for experiments with femtosecond laser is proposed to use for study the inequality of forward and reversed transitions in optics.
Deep-tissue optical imaging is a longstanding challenge limited by scattering. Both optical imaging and treatment can benefit from focusing light in deep tissue beyond one transport mean free path. Wavefront shaping based on time-reversed ultrasonically encoded (TRUE) optical focusing utilizes ultrasound focus, which is much less scattered than light in biological tissues as the 'guide star'. However, the traditional TRUE is limited by the ultrasound focusing area and pressure tagging efficiency, especially in acoustically heterogeneous medium. Even the improved version of iterative TRUE comes…
In recent works, the idea of time-reversed laser oscillation has been proposed and demonstrated to realize a two-channel coherent perfect absorber [Y.D. Chong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 053901 (2010); W.Wan et al., Science 331, 889 (2011)]. Here the time reversal of optical parametric oscillation in a nonlinear ?(2) medium is considered and shown to realize a coherent perfect absorber for colored incident signal and idler fields. A detailed analysis is presented for the time-reversed process of mirrorless optical parametric oscillation in the full nonlinear regime
Time-reversal symmetry is important to optics. In linear optics, a time-reversed process to laser emission enables total absorption of coherent light fields into an optical cavity of loss by time-reversing the original gain medium. In nonlinear optics, time symmetry exists for some well-known processes such as parametric up/down conversion, sum/difference frequency generation, however, combining exact time-reversal symmetry with nonlinear wave mixings is yet explored till now. Here, we demonstrate time reversed wave mixings for second harmonic generation (SHG) and optical parametric amplificat…
Lossless linear wave propagation is symmetric in time, a principle which can be used to create time reversed waves. Such waves are special 'pre-scattered' spatiotemporal fields, which propagate through a complex medium as if observing a scattering process in reverse, entering the medium as a complicated spatiotemporal field and arriving after propagation as a desired target field, such as a spatiotemporal focus. Time reversed waves have previously been demonstrated for relatively low frequency phenomena such as acoustics, water waves and microwaves. Many attempts have been made to extend these…
Focusing light inside scattering media in a freely addressable fashion is challenging, as the wavefront of the scattered light is highly disordered. Recently developed ultrasound-guided wavefront shaping methods are addressing this challenge, albeit with relatively low modulation efficiency and resolution limitations. In this paper, we present a new technique, time-reversed ultrasound microbubble encoded (TRUME) optical focusing, which is able to focus light with improved efficiency and sub-ultrasound wavelength resolution. This method ultrasonically destructs microbubbles, and measures the wa…
Recent works [Y.D. Chong {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 053901 (2010); W. Wan {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 331}, 889 (2011)] have shown that the time-reversed process of lasing at threshold realizes a coherent perfect absorber (CPA). In a CPA, a lossy medium in an optical cavity with a specific degree of dissipation, equal in modulus to the gain of the lasing medium, can perfectly absorb coherent optical waves at discrete frequencies that are the time-reversed counterpart of the lasing modes. Here the concepts of time-reversal of lasing and CPA are extended for optical radiation emitt…
We show that an arbitrary body or aggregate can be made perfectly absorbing at discrete frequencies if a precise amount of dissipation is added under specific conditions of coherent monochromatic illumination. This effect arises from the interaction of optical absorption and wave interference, and corresponds to moving a zero of the elastic S-matrix onto the real wavevector axis. It is thus the time-reversed process of lasing at threshold. The effect is demonstrated in a simple Si slab geometry illuminated in the 500-900 nm range. Coherent perfect absorbers are novel linear optical elements, a…
The at-will control of quantum states is a primary goal of quantum science and technology. The celebrated Hahn echo exemplifies such quantum-state control based on a time-reversal process in a few-level system. Here, we propose a different echo phenomenon associated with the energy-band structure in quantum many-body systems. We show that the dynamics of quasiparticle wavepackets can be reversed by a driving electric-field pulse, yielding echoes with the time-reversed waveform of the optical excitation pulse when the quasiparticles recombine. The present echoes are observed not only in band in…
Manipulating and focusing light deep inside biological tissue and tissue-like complex media has been desired for long yet considered challenging. One feasible strategy is through optical wavefront engineering, where the optical scattering-induced phase distortions are time reversed or pre-compensated so that photons travel along different optical paths interfere constructively at the targeted position within a scattering medium. To define the targeted position, an internal guidestar is needed to guide or provide a feedback for wavefront engineering. It could be injected or embedded probes such…
The ability to steer light propagation inside scattering media has long been sought-after due to its potential widespread applications. To form optical foci inside scattering media, the only feasible strategy is to guide photons by using either implanted or virtual guide stars. However, all of these guide stars must be introduced extrinsically, either invasively or by physical contact, limiting the scope of their application. Here, we focus light inside scattering media by employing intrinsic dynamics as guide stars. By time-reversing the perturbed component of the scattered light adaptively, …
Entanglement of states and Complete Positivity of maps are concepts that have achieved physical importance with the recent growth of quantum information science. They are however mathematically relevant whenever tensor products of complex linear (Hilbert) spaces are involved. We present such situations in classical scalar paraxial wave optics where these concepts play a role: propagation characteristics of coherent and partially coherent Gaussian beams; and the definition and separability of the family of Twisted Gaussian Schell Model (TGSM) beams. In the former, the evolution of the width of …
The orbital angular momentum of an optical vortex field is found to twist high viscosity donor material to form a micron-scale 'spin jet'. This unique phenomenon manifests the helical trajectory of the optical vortex. Going beyond both the conventional ink jet and laser induced forward mass transfer (LIFT) patterning technologies, it also offers the formation and ejection of a micron-scale 'spin jet' of the donor material even with an ultrahigh viscosity of 4 Pas. This optical vortex laser induced forward mass transfer (OV-LIFT) patterning technique will enable the development of next generati…
The physical mechanism of phenomenon is explained as a result of inequality of forward and reversed processes in optics. The importance of experimental study of its invariance relation is discussed.
The physical nature of numerous of the nonlinear phenomena in optics is explained by inequality of forward and reversed optical transitions, that corresponds to a principle of time invariance violation in electromagnetic interactions. The direct and indirect experimental proofs of such inequality and direction of the further researches are discussed.
Time-resolved imaging reveals that the helicity dependent all-optical switching (HD-AOS) of Co/Pt ferromagnetic multilayers proceeds by two stages. First one involves the helicity independent and stochastic nucleation of reversed magnetic domains. At the second stage circularly polarized light breaks the degeneracy between the magnetic domains and promotes the preferred direction of domain wall (DW) motion. The growth of the reversed domain from the nucleation cite, for a particular helicity, leads to full magnetic reversal. This study demonstrates a novel mechanism of HD-AOS mediated by the d…
Reciprocity is a universal principle that has a profound impact on many areas of physics. A fundamental phenomenon in condensed-matter physics, optical physics and acoustics, arising from reciprocity, is the constructive interference of quantum or classical waves which propagate along time-reversed paths in disordered media, leading to, for example, weak localization and metal-insulator transition. Previous studies have shown that such coherent effects are suppressed when reciprocity is broken. Here we show that by breaking reciprocity in a controlled manner, we can tune, rather than simply su…
In recent works, it has been shown rather generally that the time-reversed process of lasing at threshold realizes a coherent perfect absorber (CPA). In a CPA, a lossy medium in an optical cavity with a specific degree of dissipation, equal in modulus to the gain of the lasing medium, can perfectly absorb coherent optical waves that are the time-reversed counterpart of the lasing field. Here the time-reversed process of lasing is considered in details for a homogeneously-broadened two-level medium in an optical cavity, and the conditions for CPA are derived. It is shown that, owing to the disp…
The concept of coherent states in explanation of a nature of nonlinear phenomena in optics will be inevitably replaced by the concept of inequality of forward and reversed transitions.
In (100)-oriented GaAs illuminated at normal incidence by a laser and its second harmonic, interference between one- and two-photon absorption results in ballistic current injection, but not modulation of the overall carrier injection rate. Results from a pump-probe experiment on a transversely biased sample show that a constant electric field enables coherent control of the carrier injection rate. We ascribe this to the nonlinear optical Franz-Keldysh effect and calculate it for a two-band parabolic model. The mechanism is relevant to centrosymmetric semiconductors as well.
Causality is an important assumption underlying nonequilibrium generalizations of the second law of thermodynamics known as fluctuation relations. We here experimentally study the nonequilibrium statistical properties of the work and of the entropy production for an optically trapped, underdamped nanoparticle continuously subjected to a time-delayed feedback control. Whereas the non-Markovian feedback depends on the past position of the particle for a forward trajectory, it depends on its future position for a time-reversed path, and is therefore acausal. In the steady-state regime, we show th…
Dispersion management of periodically alternating fiber sections with opposite signs of two leading dispersion terms is applied for the regeneration of self-accelerating truncated Airy pulses. It is demonstrated that for such a dispersion management scheme, the direction of the acceleration of the pulse is reversed twice within each period. In this scheme the system features light hot spots in the center of each fiber section, where the energy of the light pulse is tightly focused in a short temporal slot. Comprehensive numerical studies demonstrate a long lasting propagation also under the in…

Consideration of symmetrical molecules allows to obtain selection rules for their SEHR spectra and establish such regularity as appearance of the bands, caused by the totally symmetric vibrations, transforming after the unitary irreducible representation in …
We present a comprehensive overview of different types of parametric interactions in nonlinear optics which are associated with simultaneous phase-matching of several optical processes in quadratic nonlinear media, the so-called multistep parametric interactions. We discuss a number of possibilities of double and multiple phase-matching in engineered structures with the sign-varying second-order nonlinear susceptibility, including (i) uniform and non-uniform quasi-phase-matched (QPM) periodic optical superlattices, (ii) phase-reversed and periodically chirped QPM structures, and (iii) uniform …
