We analyze nonlinear guided waves in a planar waveguide made of a left-handed material surrounded by a Kerr-like nonlinear dielectric. We predict that such a waveguide can support fast and slow symmetric and antisymmetric nonlinear modes. We study the symmetry breaking bifurcation and asymmetric modes in such a symmetric structure. We analyze nonlinear dispersion properties of the guided waves, and show that the modes can be both forward and backward.
We propose the use of a left-handed material in an optical waveguide structure to reduce its thickness well below the wavelength of light. We demonstrate that a layer of left-handed material, added to the cladding of a planar waveguide rather than to its core, allows for good light confinement in a subwavelength thin waveguide. We attribute the observed behavior to the change in phase evolution of electromagnetic waves in the guide. This technique can be used for the miniaturization of photonic integrated circuits.
We study the propagation of quasi-discrete microwave solitons in a nonlinear left-handed coplanar waveguide coupled with split ring resonators. By considering the relevant transmission line analogue, we derive a nonlinear lattice model which is studied analytically by means of a quasi-discrete approximation. We derive a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, and find that the system supports bright envelope soliton solutions in a relatively wide subinterval of the left-handed frequency band. We perform systematic numerical simulations, in the framework of the nonlinear lattice model, to study the p…
The spectrum of guided modes of linear chain of dielectric and left-handed cylinders is analyzed. The structure of eigenfrequences is much more richer if cylinders are made from the left-handed material with both permittivity and permeability negative. he number of guided modes is much larger, and their interaction with incident electromagnetic wave is much stronger. For some value of the wave vector, no guided modes were found. We discuss how these specific properties of guided modes correspond to folded bands, observed recently in photonic structureswith left-handed components.
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
Guided waves modes in a slab waveguide formed from the isotropic dielectric layer embedded by hyperbolic materials are investigated. Optical axis is normal to the slab plane. The dispersion relations for TE and TM waves are found. The differences between hyperbolic waveguide and conventional one are demonstrated. In particular, for each TM mode of hyperbolic waveguide there are two cut-off frequencies and the number of modes is limited. For the TE and TM modes Poynting vector component along the wave's propagation axis could be equal to zero.
The fundamental guided dispersion characteristics of guided light in a subwavelength dielectric slit channel embedded by two different plasmonic metals are investigated when varying the gap width. As a result, an overall and salient picture of the guided dispersion characteristics is obtained over a wide spectrum range below and above the plasma frequencies of the two different plasmonic metals, which is important preliminary information for analyzing this type of subwavelength waveguide. In particular, the effects of using two different metals on the guided mode dispersions are emphasized in …
We propose a class of waveguides operating near cutoff such that electromagnetic energy is mainly bound to the cladding rather than the dielectric core to achieve subdiffraction confinement of light. The cladding incorporates an alternating stack of thin films that exhibit uniaxial form birefringence with a high contrast between the effective principal dielectric constants. In contrast to conventional dielectric waveguides, the effective modal length for the fundamental mode of the proposed waveguide diverges at a much slower rate for core thicknesses less than a twentieth of the illumination …
Nonlinear guided wave modes in an asymmetric slab waveguide formed by an isotropic dielectric layer placed on a linear or nonlinear substrate and covered by a hyperbolic material are investigated. Optical axis is normal to the slab plane. The dispersion relations for TM waves are found. It is shown that there are additional cut-off frequencies for each TM mode. The effects of the nonlinearity on the dispersion relations are investigated and discussed. There are the modes, which are corresponded with situation where the peak of electric field is localized in the nonlinear substrate. These modes…
Sheets of slab waveguides with sharp corners are investigated. By means of rigorous numerical experiments, we look at oblique incidence of semi-guided plane waves. Radiation losses vanish beyond a certain critical angle of incidence. One can thus realize lossless propagation through 90-degree corner configurations, where the remaining guided waves are still subject to pronounced reflection and polarization conversion. A system of two corners can be viewed as a structure akin to a Fabry-Perot-interferometer. By adjusting the distance between the two partial reflectors, here the 90-degree corner…
We show that anisotropic planar anti-guiding waveguide structures with two radiation channels towards the surrounding cladding materials can support unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs), where radiation is cancelled in one of the radiation channels and redirected into the other. Their formation is subtle as it requires breaking the so-called polar anisotropy-symmetry of the structures. Then, UGRs appear at specific wavelengths and light propagation directions, are robust, and are characterised by phase singularities in the channel in which radiation is cancelled. The mechanism we describe a…
We report on the first experimental observation of higher-order modes guided by soliton-induced waveguides in unbiased nematic liquid crystals. We find that the nematicon waveguides operate in a bounded power region specific to each guided mode. Below this region the guided beams diffract, above it the mode mixing and coupling give rise to an unstable output.
Metasurfaces have achieved fruitful results in tailoring complexing light fields in free space. However, a systematic investigation on applying the concept of meta-optics to completely control waveguide modes is still elusive. Here we present a comprehensive catalog capable of selectively and exclusively excite almost arbitrary high-order waveguide modes of interest, leveraging silicon metasurface-patterned silicon nitride waveguides. By simultaneously engineering the phase-matched gradient of the metasurface and the vectorial spatial modal overlap between the nanoantenna near-field and target…
In recent years, extraordinary spin angular momenta have been investigated in a variety of structured electromagnetic waves, being of especial interest in sub-wavelength evanescent fields. Here we demonstrate analytically that, in planar and cylindrical waveguides supporting transverse electric/magnetic modes, transverse spin density arises inside the waveguide (different from the spin induced in the evanescent region outside the waveguide), carrying indeed longitudinal extraordinary (so-called) Belinfante's spin momentum. Such contribution depends linearly on the mode transverse wave vector, …
Guided modes of an open periodic waveguide, with a periodicity in the main propagation direction, are Bloch modes confined around the waveguide core with no radiation loss in the transverse directions. Some guided modes can have a complex propagation constant, i.e. a complex Bloch wavenumber, even when the periodic waveguide is lossless (no absorption loss). These so-called complex modes are physical solutions that can be excited by incident waves whenever the waveguide has discontinuities and defects. We show that the complex modes in an open dielectric periodic waveguide form bands, and the …
A comprehensive analysis of guided modes of a novel type of a planar Bragg reflection waveguide which consists of a low refractive index guiding layer sandwiched between two finite aperiodic mirrors is presented. The layers in the mirrors are aperiodically arranged according to the Kolakoski substitution rule. In such a waveguide light is confined inside the core by Bragg reflection from the mirrors, while dispersion characteristics of guided modes strongly depend on aperiodicity of the cladding. Using the transfer matrix formalism bandgap conditions, dispersion characteristics and mode profil…
Propagating two-dimensional plasmon modes guided along silver nanoridge waveguides with triangular and inverted triangular cross sections are investigated in this paper. Mode field profiles, dispersion curves, propagation distances, and figure-of-merits of the plasmon ridge modes are calculated for silver nanoridge waveguides with various triangular and inverted triangular waveguide cross sections. It is found that the triangular cross section nanoridge waveguide, if designed properly, can have longer propagation distance and higher figure-of-merit than the flat-top nanoridge waveguide of the …
We report a novel approach for on-chip electrical detection of the radiation guided by dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPW) and DLSPPW-based components. The detection is realized by fabricating DLSPPW components on the surface of a gold (Au) pad supported by a silicon (Si) substrate supplied with aluminum pads facilitating electrical connections, with the gold pad being perforated in a specific locations below the DLSPPWs in order to allow a portion of the DLSPPW-guided radiation to leak into the Si-substrate, where it is absorbed and electrically detected. We presen…
At a fixed frequency, a general wave field in an open optical waveguide is a sum of finite number of guided modes and an integral of radiation modes. Most studies on open lossless dielectric waveguides are concerned with regular guided modes which are confined around the waveguide core, have a real propagation constant, and propagate along the waveguide axis without attenuation. However, there may be guided modes with a complex propagation constant even though the waveguide consists of lossless isotropic dielectric materials, and they are the so-called complex modes. The complex modes are prop…
The construction of exactly solvable refractive indices allowing guided TE modes in optical waveguides is investigated within the formalism of Darboux-Crum transformations. We apply the finite-difference algorithm for higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain complex-valued refractive indices admitting all-real eigenvalues in their point spectrum. The new refractive indices are such that their imaginary part gives zero if it is integrated over the entire domain of definition. This property, called condition of zero total area, ensures the conservation of optical power so the refr…
We explore the dynamics and directionality of spontaneous emission from self-assembled In(Ga)As quantum dots into TE-polarised guided modes in GaAs two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. The local group velocity of the guided waveguide mode is probed, with values as low as $\sim 1.5\%\times c$ measured close to the slow-light band edge. By performing complementary continuous wave and time-resolved measurements with detection along, and perpendicular to the waveguide axis we probe the fraction of emission into the waveguide mode ($β$-factor). For dots randomly positioned within the unit c…
Tightly confined plasmon waveguide modes supported by semicircular cross section top silver nanoridges are investigated in this paper. Mode field profiles, dispersion curves, propagation distances, confinement factors, and figure-of-merits of semicircular top silver nanoridge plasmon waveguide mode are calculated for different radii of curvature at different wavelengths. It is found that semicircular top silver nanoridges support tightly confined quasi-TEM plasmon waveguide modes. Semicircular top silver nanoridge mode has longer propagation distance and higher figure-of-merit than that of the…
We introduce a new fundamental property of waveguides induced by the forces of the guided light, namely, the ability to self align or be in instability. A nanoscale waveguide broken by an offset and a gap may tend to self align to form a continuous waveguide. Conversely, depending on the geometry and light polarization, the two parts of the waveguide may be deflected away from each other, thus being in an unstable state. These effects are unique as they rely on the presence of both the guided mode and the scattered light. Strong self alignment forces may be facilitated by near field interactio…
We present a deep learning approach using an optical neural network to predict the fundamental modal indices $n_{\rm{eff}}$ in a silicon (Si) channel waveguide. We use three inputs, e.g., two geometric parameters and one material property, and predict the $n_{\rm{eff}}$ for the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. With the least number (i.e., $3^3$ or $4^3$) of exact mode solutions from Maxwell's equations, we can uncover the solutions which correspond to $10^3$ numerical simulations. Note that this consumes the lowest amount of computational resources. The mean squared e…
The structure of an optical waveguide determines the characteristics of its guided modes, such as their spatial profile and group index. General features are shared by modes regardless of the waveguiding structure; for example, modal dispersion is inevitable in multimode waveguides, every mode experiences group-velocity dispersion, and higher-order modes are usually slower than their lower-order counterparts. We show here that such trends can be fundamentally altered -- altogether severing the link between modal order and group index hybrid and eliminating dispersion -- by exploiting hybrid gu…
Silicon waveguides have enabled large-scale manipulation and processing of near-infrared optical signals on chip. Yet, expanding the bandwidth of guided waves to other frequencies would further increase the functionality of silicon as a photonics platform. Frequency multiplexing by integrating additional architectures is one approach to the problem, but this is challenging to design and integrate within the existing form factor due to scaling with the free-space wavelength. Here, we demonstrate that a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/silicon hybrid waveguide can enable dual-band operation at both…
Evanescent and tightly confined propagating waves exhibit a remarkable transverse spin density since the longitudinal component of the electric field is not negligible. In this work, we obtain via numerical simulations the electric field components of the fundamental guided modes of two waveguides typically used in silicon photonics: the strip and the slot waveguide. We obtain the relation between transverse and longitudinal field components, the transverse spin densities and other important parameters, such as the longitudinal component of the so-called Belinfante spin momentum density. By as…
We investigate a periodic array of aluminum nanoantennas embedded in a light-emitting slab waveguide. By varying the waveguide thickness we demonstrate the transition from weak to strong coupling between localized surface plasmons in the nanoantennas and refractive index guided modes in the waveguide. We experimentally observe a non-trivial relationship between extinction and emission dispersion diagrams across the weak to strong coupling transition. These results have implications for a broad class of photonic structures where sources are embedded within coupled resonators. For nanoantenna ar…
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
Metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability (also called left-handed materials) open new avenues to achieving unprecedented physical properties and functionality unattainable with naturally occurring materials. It has been predicted that a metamaterial slab waveguide can slow down light significantly (even to zero velocity) as the thickness of the core layer approaches a critical thickness. Here we show that coupling between the forward and backward modes becomes significant near the critical thickness due to the good matching of the wavevectors and modal pr…
The authors investigate the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides. For an ensemble of dots coupled to guided modes in the waveguide we report spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, detecting normal to the plane of the photonic crystal. For quantum dots emitting in resonance with the waveguide mode, a ~21x enhancement of photoluminescence intensity is observed as compared to dots in the unprocessed region of the wafer. This enhancement can be traced back to the Purcell enhanced emission …
We study dispersion properties of TM-polarized electromagnetic waves guided by a multilayer graphene metamaterial. We demonstrate that both dispersion and localization of the guided modes can be efficiently controlled by changing the number of layers in the structure. Remarkably, we find that in the long wavelength limit, the dispersion of the fundamental mode of the N-layer graphene structure coincides with the dispersion of a plasmon mode supported by a single graphene layer, but with N times larger conductivity. We also compare our exact dispersion relations with the results provided by the…
Topology-linked binary degrees of freedom of guided waves have been used to expand the channel capacity of and to ensure robust transmission through photonic waveguides. However, selectively exciting optical modes associated with the desired degree of freedom is challenging and typically requires spatially extended sources or filters. Both approaches are incompatible with the ultimate objective of developing compact mode-selective sources powered by single emitters. In addition, the implementation of highly desirable functionalities, such as controllable distribution of guided modes between mu…

We numerically study silicon waveguides on silica showing that it is possible to simultaneously guide optical and acoustic waves in the technologically important silicon on insulator (SOI) material system. Thin waveguides, or fins, exhibit geometrically softened mechanical modes at gigahertz frequencies with phase velocities below the Rayleigh velocity in glass, eliminating acoustic radiation losses. We propose slot waveguides on glass with telecom optical frequencies and strong radiation pressure forces resulting in Brillouin gains on the order of 500 and 50,000 1/(Wm) for backward and forwar…
We show that the periodic array of left-handed cylinders possesses a rich spectrum of guided modes when the negative permeability of cylinders equals exactly to minus value of permeability of embedding media. These resonances strongly influences propagation of electromagnetic waves through photonic structures made from left-handed materials. A series of Fano resonances excited by incident wave destroys the band frequency spectrum of square array of left-handed cylinders and increases considerably the absorption of transmitted waves.
In this letter we show the inclusion of Rhodamine B molecules (RhB) inside a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon waveguide enables for a precise determination of its optical characteristics. The principle relies on the coupling of the fluorescence emission of the dye to plasmonic waveguided modes allowed in of the structure. Using leakage radiation microscopy in real and reciprocal spaces, we measure the propagation constant of the mode and as well as their attenuation length.
We perform phase-sensitive near-field scanning optical microscopy on photonic-crystal waveguides. The observed intricate field patterns are analyzed by spatial Fourier transformations, revealing several guided TE- and TM-like modes. Using the reconstruction algorithm proposed by Ha, et al. (Opt. Lett. 34 (2009)), we decompose the measured two-dimensional field pattern in a superposition of propagating Bloch modes. This opens new possibilities to study specific modes in near-field measurements. We apply the method to study the transverse behavior of a guided TE-like mode, where the mode extends…
Planar dielectric subwavelength waveguides are proposed as waveguides for THz radiation. The waveguide porous design maximizes the fraction of power guided in the air to avoid the complexity that all the materials are highly absorbent in the THz region. Convenient access to the mode region makes them also useful for sensing of biological and chemical specimens in the THz region.
The ability to create, manipulate and detect non-classical states of light has been key for many recent achievements in quantum physics and for developing quantum technologies. Achieving the same level of control over phonons, the quanta of vibrations, could have a similar impact, in particular on the fields of quantum sensing and quantum information processing. Here we present a crucial step towards this level of control and realize a single-mode waveguide for individual phonons in a suspended silicon micro-structure. We use a cavity-waveguide architecture, where the cavity is used as a sourc…
We present a detailed analysis and comparison of dielectric waveguides made of CdTe, GaP, GaAs and InP for modal phase matched optical difference frequency generation (DFG) in the terahertz domain. From the form of the DFG equations, we derived the definition of a very general figure of merit (FOM). In turn, this FOM enabled us to compare different configurations, by taking into account linear and nonlinear susceptibility dispersion, terahertz absorption, and a rigorous evaluation of the waveguide modes properties. The most efficient waveguides found with this procedure are predicted to approa…
The mechanical response of transparent materials to optical forces is a topic that concerns a wide range of fields, from the manipulation of biological material by optical tweezers to the design of nano-optomechanical systems (NOMS). However, the fundamental aspects of such forces have always been surrounded by controversies, and several different formulations have been proposed. In this work, we focus on the specific case of light propagating as a superposition of guided modes in lossless dielectric waveguides as a physical example upon which to build a general stress tensor. We use this form…
