We use the results of a three-dimensional kinetic simulation of an Harris current sheet to propose an explanation and to reproduce the ISEE-1/2, Geotail, and Cluster observations of the magnetotail current sheet structure. Current sheet flapping, current density bifurcation, and reconnection are explained as the results of the kink and tearing instabilities, which dominate the current sheet evolution.
FMS modes are studied in the model of the magnetotail as a cylinder with plasma sheet. The presence of the plasma sheet leads to a significant modification of the modes existing in the magnetotail in the form of a cylinder with no plasma sheet. Azimuthal scales of the FMS modes differ significantly between the lobes and the plasma sheet. The azimuthal scale in the plasma sheet is much smaller than that in the magnetotail lobes. FMS waves with certain parameters are strongly reflected from the boundary between the lobes and the plasma sheet and are very weak in the plasma sheet.
Many in-situ spacecraft observations have demonstrated that magnetic reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail is largely controlled by the pre-reconnection current sheet configuration. One of the most important thin current sheet characteristics is the preponderance of electron currents driven by strong polarized electric fields, which are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetotail well before the reconnection. We use particle-in-cell simulations to investigate magnetic reconnection in the 2D magnetotail current sheet with a finite magnetic field component normal to the current sheet and with…
Magnetic field line reconnection is a universal plasma process responsible for the magnetic field topology change and magnetic field energy dissipation into charged particle heating and acceleration. In many systems, the conditions leading to the magnetic reconnection are determined by the pre-reconnection configuration of a thin layer with intense currents -- otherwise known as the thin current sheet. In this study we investigate two such systems: Earth's magnetotail and helmet streamers in the solar corona. The pre-reconnection current sheet evolution has been intensely studied in the magnet…
One of the most important problems of magnetotail dynamics is the substorm onset and the related instability of the magneotail current sheet. Since the simplest 2D current sheet configuration with monotonic $B_z$ was proven to be stable to the tearing mode, the focus of the instability investigation moved to more specific configurations, e.g. kinetic current sheets with strong transient ion currents and current sheets with non-monotonic $B_z$ (local $B_z$ minima or/and peaks). Stability of the latter current sheet configuration has been studied both within kinetic and fluid approaches, whereas…
The magnetotail current sheet configuration determines magnetic reconnection properties that control the substorm onset, one of the most energetic phenomena in the Earth's magnetosphere. The quiet-time current sheet is often approximated as a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic field configuration balanced by isotropic plasma pressure gradients. However, reconnection onset is preceded by the current sheet thinning and the formation of a nearly one-dimensional (1D) magnetic field configuration. In this study, using particle-in-cell simulations, we investigate the force balance of such thin current sh…

A new kind of magnetohydrodynamic instability and waves are analyzed for a current sheet in the presence of a small normal magnetic field component varying along the sheet. These waves and instability are related to existence of two gradients of the tangential and normal magnetic field components along the normal and tangential directions with respect to the current sheet. The current sheet can be stable or unstable if the multiplication of two magnetic gradients is positive or negative. In the stable region, the kink-like wave mode is interpreted as so called flapping waves observed in the Ea…
The release of plasma in the jovian magnetotail is observed in the form of plasmoids, travelling compression regions, field-aligned particle beams and flux-rope like events. We demonstrate that electrons propagate along the magnetic field lines in the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL), while close to the current sheet center the electron distribution is isotropic. The evidences of the counterstreaming electron beams in the PSBLs are also presented. Most of the field-aligned energetic ion beams are associated with the field-aligned electron beams and about half of them have the bipolar fluctua…
A one-dimensional model for thinning of the Earth's plasma sheet [J. K. Chao et al., Planet. Space Sci. 25, 703 (1977)] according to the Current Disruption (CD) model of auroral breakup is extended to two dimensions. A rarefaction wave, which is a signature component of the CD model, is generated with an initial disturbance. In the 1D gas model, the rarefaction wave propagates tailward at sound velocity and is assumed to cause thinning. Extending to a 2D gas model of a simplified plasma sheet configuration, the rarefaction wave is weakened, and the thinning ceases to propagate. Extending furth…
We present the first statistical study of magnetic structures and associated energy dissipation observed during a single period of turbulent magnetic reconnection, by using the \textit{in-situ} measurements of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the Earth's magnetotail on July 26, 2017. The structures are selected by identifying a bipolar signature in the magnetic field and categorized as plasmoids or current sheets via an automated algorithm which examines current density and plasma flow. The size of the plasmoids forms a decaying exponential distribution ranging from sub-electron up to …
Spacecraft data reveals a nonuniform ambipolar electric field transverse to the magnetic field in a thin magnetotail current sheet that leads to intense ExB velocity shear and non-gyrotropic particle distributions. The ExB drift far exceeds the diamagnetic drift and drives lower hybrid waves localized to the magnetic field reversal region, which is ideally suited for the anomalous dissipation necessary for reconnection. It also reveals substructures embedded in the current density, indicating the formation of a non-ideal current sheet.
Ballooning instabilities are widely believed to be a possible triggering mechanism for the onset of substorm and current disruption initiation in the near-Earth magnetotail. Yet the stability of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) in a global and realistic magnetotail configuration has not been well examined. In this paper, the growth rate of the KBM is calculated from analytical theory for the two-dimensional Voigt equilibrium within the framework of kinetic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The growth rate of the KBM is found to be strongly dependent on the field line stiffening factor $S$, whi…
Among the fundamental and most challenging problems of laboratory, space, and astrophysical plasma physics is to understand the relaxation processes of nearly collisionless plasmas toward quasi-stationary states; and the resultant states of electromagnetic plasma turbulence. Recently, it has been argued that solar wind plasma $β$ and temperature anisotropy observations may be regulated by kinetic instabilities such as the ion-cyclotron, mirror, electron-cyclotron, and firehose instabilities; and that magnetic fluctuation observations are consistent with the predictions of the Fluctuation-Dissi…
For a long time, ballooning instabilities have been believed to be a possible triggering mechanism for the onset of substorm and current disruption initiation in the near-Earth magnetotail. Yet the stability of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) in a global and realistic magnetotail configuration has not been well examined. In this paper, stability of the KBM is evaluated for the two-dimensional Voigt equilibrium of the near-Earth magnetotail based on an analytical kinetic theory of ballooning instability in the framework of kinetic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, where the kinetic effects suc…

The work shows that a single elongated island immersed in the quasi-neutral current sheet makes it MHD unstable. Typical values of growth rate are found to be several per cent of inverse Alfven time for broad sheets. Hall dynamics greatly enhance instability and growth rate reaches one-tenth of ion cyclotron frequency when sheet width is comparable to ion inertia length. A weak square-root dependence of increment on island width and length is derived both from numerical simulation and analytical analysis. At the non-linear phase of evolution a phenomenon of fast impulsive intensification of cu…
A theoretical investigation has been made of electron acoustic wave propagating in unmagnetized collisionless plasma consisting of a cold electron fluid and isothermal ions with two different temperatures obeying Boltzmann type distributions. Based on the pseudo-potential approach, large amplitude potential structures and the existence of Solitary waves are discussed. The reductive perturbation method has been employed to derive the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation for small but finite amplitude electrostatic waves. An algebraic method with computerized symbolic computation, which greatly exce…
We present 1.5D Vlasov code simulations of the dynamics of electron holes in non-uniform magnetic and electric fields typical of current sheets and, particularly, of the Earth's magnetotail current sheet. The simulations show that spatial width and amplitude of electron holes do not substantially vary in the course of propagation, but there arises a double layer localized around the electron hole and manifested as a drop of the electrostatic potential along the electron hole. We demonstrate that electron holes produced around the neutral plane of a current sheet slow down in the course of prop…
Collisionless space plasma environments are typically characterised by distinct particle populations. Although moments of their velocity distribution functions help in distinguishing different plasma regimes, the distribution functions themselves provide more comprehensive information about the plasma state, especially at times when the distribution function includes non-thermal effects. Unlike moments, however, distribution functions are not easily characterised by a small number of parameters, making their classification more difficult to achieve. In order to perform this classification, we …
Detection of a separator line that connects magnetic nulls and the determination of the dynamics and plasma environment of such a structure can improve our understanding of the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic reconnection process. However, this type of field and particle configuration has not been directly observed in space plasmas. Here we report the identification of a pair of nulls, the null-null line that connects them, and associated fans and spines in the magnetotail of Earth using data from the four Cluster spacecraft. With di and de designating the ion and electron inertial lengths, re…
A thin current sheet (TCS), with the width of an order of thermal proton gyroradius, appears a fundamental physical object which plays an important role in structuring of major magnetospheric current systems (magnetotail, magnetodisk, etc.). The TCSs are nowadays under extensive study by means of space missions and theoretical models. We consider a simple model of the TCS separating two half-spaces occupied by a homogenous magnetic field of opposite sign tangential to the TCS; a small normal component of the magnetic field is prescribed. An analytical solution for the electric current and plas…

Current sheets are spatially localized almost-1D structures with intense plasma currents. They play a key role in storing the magnetic field energy and they separate different plasma populations in planetary magnetospheres, the solar wind, and the solar corona. Current sheets are primary regions for the magnetic field line reconnection responsible for plasma heating and charged particle acceleration. One of the most interesting and widely observed type of 1D current sheets is the rotational discontinuity, that can be force-free or include plasma compression. Theoretical models of such 1D curre…
The propagation of reconnection signatures and their associated energy are examined using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations and Cluster satellite observations. It is found that the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field near the separatrices is associated with a kinetic Alfvén wave. For magnetotail parameters, the parallel propagation of this wave is super-Alfvénic (V_parallel ~ 1500 - 5500 km/s) and generates substantial Poynting flux (S ~ 10^-5 - 10^-4 W/m^2) consistent with Cluster observations of magnetic reconnection. This Poynting flux substantially exceeds that due to frozen-in ion …
Using 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we study magnetic reconnection with the x-line being spatially confined in the current direction. We include thick current layers to prevent reconnection at two ends of a thin current sheet that has a thickness on an ion inertial (di) scale. The reconnection rate and outflow speed drop significantly when the extent of the thin current sheet in the current direction is < O(10 di). When the thin current sheet extent is long enough, we find it consists of two distinct regions; an inactive region (on the ion-drifting side) exists adjacent to the active …
Reconnection of the self-generated magnetic fields in laser-plasma interaction was first investigated experimentally by Nilson {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 255001 (2006)] by shining two laser pulses a distance apart on a solid target layer. An elongated current sheet (CS) was observed in the plasma between the two laser spots. In order to more closely model magnetotail reconnection, here two side-by-side thin target layers, instead of a single one, are used. It is found that at one end of the elongated CS a fan-like electron outflow region including three well-collimated electron jets ap…
Magnetic reconnection can explosively release magnetic energy when opposing magnetic fields merge and annihilate through a current sheet, driving plasma jets and accelerating non-thermal particle populations to high energy, in plasmas ranging from space and astrophysical to laboratory scales. Through laboratory experiments and spacecraft observations, significant experimental progress has been made in demonstrating how fast dissipation and reconnection occurs in narrow, kinetic-scale current sheets. However, a challenge has been to demonstrate what triggers reconnection and how it proceeds rap…
We use a nonstationary generalization of the higher-order structure function technique to investigate statistical properties of the magnetic field fluctuations recorded by MESSENGER spacecraft during its first flyby (01/14/2008) through the near Mercury's space environment, with the emphasis on key boundary regions participating in the solar wind -- magnetosphere interaction. Our analysis shows, for the first time, that kinetic-scale fluctuations play a significant role in the Mercury's magnetosphere up to the largest resolvable time scale ~20 s imposed by the signal nonstationarity, suggestin…

Depression in magnetic field strength with a scale below one proton gyroradius is referred to as kinetic-size magnetic hole (KSMH). KSMHs are frequently observed near terrestrial space environments and are thought to play an important role in electron energization and energy dissipation in space plasmas. Recently, KSMHs have been evidenced in the Venusian magnetosheath. However, observations of KSMHs in other planetary environments are still lacking. In this study, we present the in situ detection of KSMHs in Martian magnetosheath using Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) for the fi…
In this paper, we discuss the formation of ring-shaped and gyro-phase restricted velocity distribution functions (VDFs) at the edges of a cloud of protons injected into non-uniform distributions of the electromagnetic field. The velocity distribution function is reconstructed using the forward test-kinetic method. We consider two profiles of the electric field: (1) a non-uniform E-field obtained by solving the Laplace equation consistent with the conservation of the electric drift and (2) a constant and uniform E-field. In both cases, the magnetic field is similar to the solutions obtained for…
Magnetic reconnection occurring in collisionless environments is a multi-scale process involving both ion and electron kinetic processes. Because of their small mass, the electron scales are difficult to resolve in numerical and satellite data, it is therefore critical to know whether the overall evolution of the reconnection process is influenced by the kinetic nature of the electrons, or is unchanged when assuming a simpler, fluid, electron model. This paper investigate this issue in the general context of an asymmetric current sheet, where both the magnetic field amplitude and the density v…
