Mapping a cloud of ultracold atoms onto a miniature storage ring

We describe how to realize magnetic and magneto-optical confinement of ultracold atoms in a torus with adjustable diameter and how an elliptical cloud of ultracold atoms can be adiabatically transformed to have a toroidal shape. An experiment with cold 87Rb atoms demonstrates the feasibility of shape transformations. These techniques can be used for atom interferometry and quantum computation.

Robust storage qubits in ultracold polar molecules

Quantum states with long-lived coherence are essential for quantum computation, simulation and metrology. Light trapping in high-density ultracold atomic gases for quantum memory applications

High-density and ultracold atomic gases have emerged as promising media for storage of individual photons for quantum memory applications. In this paper we provide an overview of our theoretical and experimental efforts in this direction, with particular attention paid to manipulation of light storage (a) through complex recurrent optical scattering processes in very high density gases (b) by an external control field in a characteristic electromagnetically induced transparency configuration.

Gravitationally enhanced depolarization of ultracold neutrons in magnetic field gradients, and implications for neutron electric dipole moment measurements

Trapped ultracold neutrons (UCN) have for many years been the mainstay of experiments to search for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron, a critical parameter in constraining scenarios of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Because their energies are so low, UCN preferentially populate the lower region of their physical enclosure, and do not sample uniformly the ambient magnetic field throughout the storage volume. Interaction of Ultracold Antihydrogen with a Conducting Wall

We investigate the interaction of ultracold antihydrogen with a conducting surface. Our discussion focuses on the physical regime where the phenomenon of quantum reflection manifests. We calculate the reflection probability as function of incident atom energy. We find that, for ground state $\bar{H}$ atoms (with $T< 10^{-5}$ K), the probability of reflection is $R \simeq 1-k b$, where $k$ is the momentum of the atom and $b = 2174.0$ a.u. is a constant determined solely by the van der Waals-Casimir tail of the atom-wall interaction. Resonator-Enhanced Optical Dipole Trap for Fermionic Lithium Atoms

We demonstrate a novel optical dipole trap which is based on the enhancement of the optical power density of a Nd:YAG laser beam in a resonator. The trap is particularly suited for experiments with ultracold gases, as it combines a potential depth of order 1 mK with storage times of several tens of seconds. We study the interactions in a gas of fermionic lithium atoms in our trap and observe the influence of spin-changing collisions and off-resonant photon scattering.
