Incompressible, inviscid, irrotational, and unsteady flows with circulation $Γ$ around a distorted toroidal bubble are considered. A general variational principle that determines the evolution of the bubble shape is formulated. For a two-dimensional (2D) cavity with a constant area $A$, exact pseudo-differential equations of motion are derived, based on variables that determine a conformal mapping of the unit circle exterior into the region occupied by the fluid. A closed expression for the Hamiltonian of the 2D system in terms of canonical variables is obtained. Stability of a stationary drifting 2D hollow vortex is demonstrated, when the circulation is relatively large, $gA^{3/2}/Γ^2\ll 1$. For a circulation-dominated regime of three-dimensional flows a simplified Lagrangian is suggested, inasmuch as the bubble shape is well described by the center-line $\g{R}(ξ,t)$ and by an approximately circular cross-section with relatively small area, $A(ξ,t)\ll (\oint |\g{R}'|dξ)^2$. In particular, a finite-dimensional dynamical system is derived and approximately solved for a vertically moving axisymmetric vortex ring bubble with a compressed gas inside.
During the operation of a seismic airgun source, a certain amount of compressed high-pressure air is released from the airgun chamber into the surrounding water, generating an expanding toroidal bubble attached to the airgun-body. The subsequent oscillations of the bubble generate low-frequency pressure waves, which are used to map the ocean subbottom, e.g., to locate oil and gas reserves. The bubble dynamic behavior and the emitted pressure waves are inevitably influenced by the airgun-body. However, the bubble-airgun-body interaction is far from well understood. This paper investigates the s…
Cavitation is a phenomenon in which bubbles form and collapse in liquids due to pressure or temperature changes. Even common tools like a rubber popper can be used to create cavitation at home. As a rubber popper toy slams a solid wall underwater, toroidal cavitation forms. As part of this project, we aim to explain how an elastic shell causes cavitation and to describe the bubble morphology. High-speed imaging reveals that a fast fluid flow between a snapping popper and a solid glass reduces the fluid pressure to cavitate. Cavitation occurs on the popper surface in the form of sheet cavitatio…
On the basis of solutions of the Bragg-Hawthorne equations we discuss the helicity of thin toroidal vortices with the swirl - the orbital motion along the torus diretrix. It is shown that relationship of the helicity with circulations along the small and large linked circles - directrix and generatrix of the torus - depends on distribution of the azimuthal velocity in the core of the swirling vortex ring. In the case of non-homogeneous swirl this relationship differs from the well-known Moffat relationship - the doubled product of such circulations multiplied by the number of links. The result…
The fluid dynamics video show a gas stream which is injected into a packed bed immersed in water and fluid dynamcis video present the dynamics involved. The refractive index of the water an the packed bed are quite similar and the edges of the spherical particles can be seen. Two distinctive regimens can be observed. The first one, for low air flow rates, which is characterized by the percolation of the air thought the interstitial space among particles. And the second one, for high air flow rates, which is characterized by the accumulation of air inside the packed bed without percolation, it …

The stability of high-end piezo-acoustic drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing is sometimes compromised by the entrainment of an air bubble inside the ink channel. Here, bubble pinch-off from an acoustically driven meniscus is studied in an optically transparent DOD printhead as a function of the driving waveform. We show that bubble pinch-off follows from low-amplitude higher-order meniscus oscillations on top of the global high-amplitude meniscus motion that drives droplet formation. In a certain window of control parameters, phase inversion between the low and high frequency components leads…
Recent experiments have shown that when a near-hemispherical lipid vesicle attached to a solid surface is subjected to a simple shear flow it exhibits a pattern of membrane circulation much like a dipole vortex. This is in marked contrast to the toroidal circulation that would occur in the related problem of a drop of immiscible fluid attached to a surface and subjected to shear. This profound difference in flow patterns arises from the lateral incompressibility of the membrane, which restricts the observable flows to those in which the velocity field in the membrane is two-dimensionally diver…
We use Direct Numerical Simulations to study the two-dimensional flow of a rotating, half soap bubble that is heated at its equator. The heating produces buoyancy and rotation generates a Coriolis forces in the fluid. However, due to the curved surface of the bubble, the buoyancy and Coriolis forces vary with latitude on the bubble, giving rise to rich flow behavior. We first explore the single-point properties of the flow, including the Reynolds and Nusselt numbers, mean fields, and Reynolds stresses, all as a function of latitude. For a given Rayleigh number, we observe a non-monotonic depen…
Stout beers show the counter-intuitive phenomena of sinking bubbles while the beer is settling. Previous research suggests that this phenomena is due the small size of the bubbles in these beers and the presence of a circulatory current, directed downwards near the side of the wall and upwards in the interior of the glass. The mechanism by which such a circulation is established and the conditions under which it will occur has not been clarified. In this paper, we demonstrate using simulations and experiment that the flow in a glass of stout depends on the shape of the glass. If it narrows dow…
Surface observations indicate that the speed of the solar meridional circulation in the photosphere varies in anti-phase with the solar cycle. The current explanation for the source of this variation is that inflows into active regions alter the global surface pattern of the meridional circulation. When these localized inflows are integrated over a full hemisphere, they contribute to the slow down of the axisymmetric poleward horizontal component. The behavior of this large scale flow deep inside the convection zone remains largely unknown. Present helioseismic techniques are not sensitive eno…
Ultrasound-driven oscillating micro-bubbles have been used as active actuators in microfluidic devices to perform manifold tasks such as mixing, sorting and manipulation of microparticles. A common configuration consists on side-bubbles, created by trapping air pockets in blind channels perpendicular to the main channel direction. This configuration consists of acoustically excited bubbles with a semi-cylindrical shape that generate significant streaming flow. Due to the geometry of the channels, such flows have been generally considered as quasi two-dimensional. Similar assumptions are often …
In this work we study the heat transport in inhomogeneous bubbly flow. The experiments were performed in a rectangular bubble column heated from one side wall and cooled from the other, with millimetric bubbles introduced through one half of the injection section (close to the hot wall or close to the cold wall). We characterise the global heat transport while varying two parameters: the gas volume fraction $α= 0.4\% - 5.1 \%$, and the Rayleigh number $Ra_H=4\times10^9-2.2\times10^{10}$. As captured by imaging and characterised using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), different flow regimes occur…
The physico-chemistry of surfactants (amphiphilic surface active agents) is often used to control the dynamics of viscous drops and bubbles. Surfactant sorption kinetics has been shown to play a critical role in the deformation of drops in extensional and shear flows, yet to the best of our knowledge these kinetics effects on a viscous drop in an electric fieldhave not been accounted for. In this paper we numerically investigate the effects of sorption kinetics on a surfactant-covered viscous drop in an electric field. Over a range of electric conductivity and permittivity ratios between the i…
