A phenomenological turbulence model in which the energy spectrum obeys a nonlinear diffusion equation is presented. This equation respects the scaling properties of the original Navier-Stokes equations and it has the Kolmogorov -5/3 cascade and the thermodynamic equilibrium spectra as exact steady state solutions. The general steady state in this model contains a nonlinear mixture of the constant-flux and thermodynamic components. Such "warm cascade" solutions describe the bottleneck phenomenon of spectrum stagnation near the dissipative scale. Self-similar solutions describing a finite-time formation of steady cascades are analysed and found to exhibit nontrivial scaling behaviour.
The possibility is considered that turbulence is described by differential equations for which uniqueness fails maximally, at least in some limit. The inviscid Burgers equation, in the context of Onsager's suggestion that turbulence should be described by a negative absolute temperature, is such a limit. In this picture, the onset of turbulence coincides with the proliferation of singularities which characterizes the failure of uniqueness.
I will briefly survey the most important results obtained so far on chaos in partial differential equations. I will also survey progresses and make some comments on Navier-Stokes equations and turbulence.
A derivation of the "exact" two-point equations analogous to those used as a basis for one-point Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model for variable density, incompressible turbulence. The purpose is to present the statistical correlations that must be dealt with to yield a two-point, or alternatively, a spectral model of variable density turbulence.
By the nonstandard analysis theory of turbulence, the governing equations of compressible turbulence are given. The equations can hold at non-uniform points, in fact, are new kind of equations. There are three choices. In the choice one, the second-order infinitesimal quantities are neglected, the closed equations about the point(monad)-average quantities are obtained. In other two choices, the closed equations, in which the third-order infinitesimal quantities are omitted, are given and about the instantaneous, point-averaged and fluctuant quantities.
We introduce corrections to the Navier-Stokes equation arising from the transitions between molecular states and the injection of external energy. In the simplest application of the proposed post Navier-Stokes equation, we find a multi-valued velocity field and the immediate possibility of velocity reversal, both features of turbulence.
Two dimensional passive scalar turbulence is studied by means of a k-space diffusion model based on a third order differential approximation. This simple description of local nonlinear interactions in Fourier space is shown to present a general expression, in line with previous seminal works, and appears to be suitable for various 2D turbulence problems. Steady state solutions for the spectral energy density of the flow is shown to recover the Kraichnan-Kolmogorov phenomenology of the dual cascade, while various passive scalar spectra, such as Batchelor or Obukhov-Corssin spectra are recovered…
A new form of the well known Lin equation for the energy balance in isotropic turbulence is given which takes account of the filtered-partitioned transfer spectra which were used to resolve the scale paradox. It is argued that this new formulation provides a new starting point for both theoretical and numerical methods which may lead to a better understanding of the underlying energy processes in turbulence.
Through the Ginzburg-Landau and the Navier-Stokes equations, we study turbulence phenomena for viscous incompressible and compressible fluids by a second order phase transition. For this model, the velocity is defined by the sum of classical and whirling components. Moreover, the laminar-turbulent transition is controlled by rotational effects of the fluid. Hence, the thermodynamic compatibility of the differential system is proved. The same model is used to understand the origins of tornadoes and their behavior and the birth of the vortices resulting from the fall of water in a vertical tube.…
A new exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is derived for the compressible flows which are far from equilibrium in the limit of extremely low shear viscosity and relatively large volume viscosity. The closed description of the evolution of statistical moments of velocity is obtained, thereby bypassing the closure problem in the theory of turbulence.
Some important concepts in the nonstandard analysis theory of turbulence are presented in this article. The structure of point, on which differential equations are defined, is analyzed. The distinction between the uniform point and the non-uniform point, as well as between the standard point and the nonstandard point, is showed. A new kind of equations, which differ essentially from those in existent theory, is emphasized. These new equations can hold at non-uniform points. The applicability of the Navier-Stokes equations to turbulence is discussed. Some illustrations of the nonstandard analys…
By definition, Manufactured turbulence(MT) is purported to mimic physical turbulence rather than model it. The MT equations are constrained to be simple to solve and provide an inexpensive surrogate to Navier-Stokes based Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) for use in engineering applications or theoretical analyses. In this article, we investigate one approach in which the linear inviscid aspects of MT are derived from a linear approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations while the non-linear and viscous physics are approximated via stochastic modeling. The ensuing Langevin MT equations are us…
Throughout the history of the study of turbulence in fluid dynamics, there has yet to arise a unique definition or theoretical criterion for this important phenomenon. There have been interesting conjectures made by Ruelle [2], Muriel [3], and Getreuer, Albano and Muriel [6], however, attempting to provide the sufficient criteria for the onset of turbulence. In this paper, a classic equation in fluid dynamics, Burger's equation, is solved in one and two dimensions, and these conjectures are illustrated. This illustration supports these conjectures by showing that the proposed criteria do arise…
An analysis of the turbulence-radiation interaction in the framework of large eddy simulation (LES) is presented. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of statistical steady forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence is used to evaluate the relevance of the unclosed terms of the filtered radiative transfer equation (RTE) and to study the influence of parameters like the optical thickness and the turbulence intensity. LES without subgrid-scale models of the filtered RTE has also been investigated. Neglecting the subgrid-scale fluctuations of radiation has proved to be an accurate assumption in various…
We introduce a modification of the Navier-Stokes equation that has the remarkable property of possessing an infinite number of conserved quantities in the inviscid limit. This new equation is studied numerically and turbulence properties are analyzed concerning energy spectra and scaling of structure functions. The dissipative structures arising in this new equation are curled vortex sheets contrary to vortex tubes arising in Navier-Stokes turbulence. The numerically calculated scaling of structure functions is compared with a phenomenological model based on the She-Lévêque approach. Finally, …
A phenomenological model for the dissipation of scalar fluctuations due to the straining by the fluid motion is proposed in this letter. An explicit equation is obtained for the time evolution of the probability distribution function of a coarse-grained scalar concentration. The model relies on a self-convolution process. We first present this model in the Batchelor regime and then extend empirically our result to the turbulent case. The inclusion of this model in more general transport equations, including spatial gradients, is discussed in relation with 2D turbulence and stratified flows.
We present two phenomenological models for 2D turbulence in which the energy spectrum obeys a nonlinear fourth-order and a second-order differential equations respectively. Both equations respect the scaling properties of the original Navier-Stokes equations and it has both the -5/3 inverse-cascade and t -3 direct-cascade spectra. In addition, the fourth order equation has Raleigh-Jeans thermodynamic distributions, as exact steady state solutions. We use the fourth-order model to derive a relation between the direct-cascade and the inverse-cascade Kolmogorov constants which is in a good qualit…
Based on the Karman-Howarth equation in 3D incompressible fluid, a new isotropic turbulence scale evolution equation and its related theory progress. The present results indicate that the energy cascading process has remarkable similarities with the determinisitic construction rules of the isotonic oscillators in quantum mechanics.
We present an overview of recent works on the statistical description of turbulent flows in terms of probability density functions (PDFs) in the framework of the Lundgren-Monin-Novikov (LMN) hierarchy. Within this framework, evolution equations for the PDFs are derived from the basic equations of fluid motion. The closure problem arises either in terms of a coupling to multi-point PDFs or in terms of conditional averages entering the evolution equations as unknown functions. We mainly focus on the latter case and use data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) to specify the unclosed terms. A…
The divergence theorem of Gauss plays a central role in the derivation of the governing differential equations in fluid dynamics, electrodynamics, gravitational fields, and optics. One is often interested in an evolution equation for the large scale quantities without resolving the details of the small scales. As a result, there has been a significant effort in developing time-averaged and spatially-filtered equations for large scale dynamics from the fully resolved governing differential equations. One should realize that by starting from these fully-resolved equations (e.g. the Euler or Navi…
Qian Jian, a Chinese theoretical physicist and fluid dynamicist, devoted the second part of his scientific life to the physical understanding of small-scale turbulence to the exclusion of all else. Qian developed his own statistical theory of small-scale turbulence, based on the Liouville (1853) equation and a perturbation variational approach to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, which is compatible with the Kolmogorov-Oboukhov energy spectrum. His statistical theory of small-scale turbulence, which appears mathematically and physically valid, successfully led to his contributions to (i) …
Despite the nonlinear nature of wall turbulence, there is evidence that the energy-injection mechanisms sustaining wall turbulence can be ascribed to linear processes. The different scenarios stem from linear stability theory and comprise exponential instabilities from mean-flow inflection points, transient growth from non-normal operators, and parametric instabilities from temporal mean-flow variations, among others. These mechanisms, each potentially capable of leading to the observed turbulence structure, are rooted in simplified theories and conceptual arguments. Whether the flow follows a…
The appearance of vortex filaments, the power-law dependence of velocity and vorticity correlators and their multiscaling behavior are derived from the Navier-Stokes equation. This is possible due to interpretation of the Navier-Stokes equation as an equation with multiplicative noise, and remarkable properties of random matrix products.
Differential models for hydrodynamic, passive-scalar and wave turbulence given by nonlinear first- and second-order evolution equations for the energy spectrum in the $k$-space were analysed. Both types of models predict formation an anomalous transient power-law spectra. The second-order models were analysed in terms of self-similar solutions of the second kind, and a phenomenological formula for the anomalous spectrum exponent was constructed using numerics for a broad range of parameters covering all known physical examples. The first-order models were examined analytically, including findi…
In this article, I would like to express some of my views on the nature of turbulence. These views are mainly drawn from the author's recent results on chaos in partial differential equations \cite{Li04}. Fluid dynamicists believe that Navier-Stokes equations accurately describe turbulence. A mathematical proof on the global regularity of the solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is a very challenging problem. Such a proof or disproof does not solve the problem of turbulence. It may help understanding turbulence. Turbulence is more of a dynamical system problem. Studies on chaos in partial …
A three-dimensional model of the far turbulent wake behind a self-propelled body in a passively stratified medium is considered. The model is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations by a similarity reduction and the B-determining equations method. The system of ordinary differential equations satisfying natural boundary conditions is solved numerically. The solutions obtained here are in close agreement with experimental data.
Aims. This series of papers aims at building a new formalism specifically tailored to study the impact of turbulence on the global modes of oscillation in solar-like stars. This first paper aims at deriving a linear wave equation that directly and consistently contains the turbulence as an input to the model, and therefore naturally contains the information on the coupling between the turbulence and the modes, through the stochasticity of the equations. Methods. We use a Lagrangian stochastic model of turbulence based on Probability Density Function methods to describe the evolution of the pro…
We use the 2 particle irreducible Schwinger-Keldysh effective action to set up consistent equations for the velocity and pressure correlations of a turbulent flow. We use these equations to derive the Kadanoff-Baym equations describing the relaxation to Kolmogorov turbulence in the absence of mean velocities.
We investigate phase ordering dynamics of the incompressible Toner-Tu equation in three dimensions. We show that the phase ordering proceeds via defect merger events and the dynamics is controlled by the Reynolds number Re. At low Re, the dynamics is similar to that of the Ginzburg-Landau equation. At high Re, turbulence controls phase ordering. In particular, we observe a forward energy cascade from the coarsening length scale to the dissipation scale.
Invariant parameterization schemes for the eddy-vorticity flux in the barotropic vorticity equation on the beta-plane are constructed and then applied to turbulence modeling. This construction is realized by the exhaustive description of differential invariants for the maximal Lie invariance pseudogroup of this equation using the method of moving frames, which includes finding functional bases of differential invariants of arbitrary order, a minimal generating set of differential invariants and a basis of operators of invariant differentiation in an explicit form. Special attention is paid to …
The shallow water equations without shear effects are similar to the gas dynamics equations with a polytropic equation of state. When the shear effects are taken into account, the equations contain additional evolution equations mathematically analogous to those of the Reynolds stresses in turbulent flows of compressible fluids when the source terms are neglected (ideal turbulence). We show that the non-dissipative model of shear shallow water flows and the model of ideal turbulence admit a similar variational formulation where, in the both cases, the equations for the Reynolds stress tensor e…
The turbulence field is stacked on the laminar flow. In this research, the laminar flow is described as a macro deformation which forms an instant curvature space. On such a curvature space, the turbulence is viewed as a micro deformation. So, the fluid flow is described by the geometrical field theory of finite deformation. Based on the Lagrange mechanics and the deformation energy concept, using the Least Action Principle, the Euler-Lagrange motion equations are obtained. According to A E Green formulation, the stress concept is introduced by deformation tensor. The fluid motion is described…
An open issue in turbulence theory is related to the determination of the exact evolution equation for the probability density associated to the relevant (stochastic) fluid fields. Such an equation in the usual approaches to turbulence reproduces, at most in an approximate sense, the correct fluid equations. In this paper we present a statistical model which applies to an incompressible, resistive and quasi-neutral magnetofluid. The approach is based on the formulation of an inverse kinetic theory (IKT) for the full set of MHD equations appropriate for an incompressible, viscous, quasi-neutral…
We investigate coarsening dynamics in the two-dimensional, incompressible Toner-Tu equation. We show that coarsening proceeds via vortex merger events, and the dynamics crucially depend on the Reynolds number Re. For low Re, the coarsening process has similarities to Ginzburg-Landau dynamics. On the other hand, for high Re, coarsening shows signatures of turbulence. In particular, we show the presence of an enstrophy cascade from the intervortex separation scale to the dissipation scale.
The wave turbulence equation is an effective kinetic equation that describes the dynamics of wave spectrum in weakly nonlinear and dispersive media. Such a kinetic model has been derived by physicists in the sixties, though the well-posedness theory remains open, due to the complexity of resonant interaction kernels. In this paper, we provide a global unique radial strong solution, the first such a result, to the wave turbulence equation for capillary waves.
We present developments of the Hamiltonian approach to problems of the freely decay of isotropic turbulence, and also consider specific applications of the modified Prelle-Singer procedure to isotropic turbulence. It demonstrates that a nonlinear second order ordinary differential equation is intimately related to the self-preserving solution of Karman-Howarth equation, admitting time-dependent first integrals and also proving the nonstandard Hamiltonian structure, as well as the Liouville sense of integrability.
The comparison of calculations methods in nonperturbative quantum fields theory and turbulence theory is made. The main result is that in both cases there is an infinite equations set. In the first case it is the equations set for Green's functions and in the second case it is the equations set for cumulants. It allows us to use similar mathematical methods to solve problems in nonperturbative quantum field theory and turbulence modeling. A closure problem of truncation of the infinite equations set is discussed.

We construct a discrete shell-model for two-dimensional turbulence that takes into account local and nonlocal interactions between velocity modes in Fourier space. In real space, its continuous limit is described by the one-dimensional Burgers equation. We find a novel approximate scaling solution of such an equation and show that it well describes the main characteristics of the energy spectrum in fully developed, freely decaying two-dimensional turbulence.
A two-dimensional generalized cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with complex coefficients for the group dispersion and nonlinear terms is used to investigate the evolution of a finite-amplitude localized initial perturbation. It is found that modulation of the latter can lead to side-band formation, wave condensation, collapse, turbulence, and inverse cascade, although not all together nor in that order.
A $p$-adic hydrodynamic type equation with two integrals of motion is proposed. It can be considered as a model cascade equation for energy dissipation in fully developed turbulence. Some of special cases of the proposed equation are detailed and it is shown that for a specific choice of parametrs they have stationary solutions that correspond to the 2/3 Kolmogorov-Obukhov law. Possible further studies of the proposed model are discussed.
We study the holographic hydrodynamics in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) gravity in the framework of the large $D$ expansion. We find that the large $D$ EGB equations can be interpreted as the hydrodynamic equations describing the conformal fluid. These fluid equations are truncated at the second order of the derivative expansion, similar to the Einstein gravity at large $D$. From the analysis of the fluid flows, we find that the fluid equations can be taken as a variant of the compressible version of the non-relativistic Navier-Stokes equations. Particularly, in the limit of small Mach number…
The classical turbulence theory by Kolmogorov is reconsidered using Navier-Stokes' equation generalized to 6D physical-plus-eddy space. Strong pseudo-singularity is shown to reveal itself along the boundary `ridge' line separating the dissipation and inertial sub-ranges surrounding the origin of the eddy space. A speculation is made that this singularity is generated by two dipoles of opposite sign aligned on the common axis. It is supported by the observation that the universal power spectrum calculated rediscovers the Kolmogorov's -5/3 power law as independent of the dimensional approach.
We investigate two-dimensional turbulence within the Instanton formalism which determines the most probable field in a stochastic classical field theory starting from the Martin-Siggia-Rose path integral. We perform an approximate analysis of these equations based on a variational ansatz using elliptical vortices. The result are evolution equations for the positions and the shapes of the vortices. We solve these ordinary differential equations numerically. The extremal action for the two-point statistics is determined by the merging of two elliptical vortices. We discuss the relationship of th…
This paper is a synopsis of the recent book A. Boritchev, S. Kuksin, \textit{One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation}, AMS Publications, 2021 (to appear). The book is dedicated to the stochastic Burgers equation as a model for 1d turbulence, and the paper discusses its content in relation to the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence.
The assumption of similarity and self-preservation, which permits an analytical determination of the energy decay in isotropic turbulence, has played an important role in the development of turbulence theory for more than half a century. Sedov (1944), who first found an ingenious way to obtain two equations from one. Nonethless, it appears that this problem has never been reinvestigated in depth subsequent to this earlier work. In the present paper, such an analysis is carried out, yielding a much more complete picture of self-preservation isotropic turbulence. Based on these exact solutions, …
We study numerically a Constantin-Lax-Majda-De Gregorio model generalized by Okamoto, Sakajo and Wunsch, which is a model of fluid turbulence in one dimension with an inviscid conservation law. In the presence of the viscosity and two types of the large-scale forcings, we show that turbulent cascade of the inviscid invariant, which is not limited to quadratic quantity, occurs and that properties of this model's turbulent state are related to singularity of the inviscid case by adopting standard tools of analyzing fluid turbulence.
We study the single-particle distributions of three-dimensional hard sphere gas described by the Boltzmann equation. We focus on the steady homogeneous isotropic solutions in thermodynamically open conditions, i.e. in the presence of forcing and dissipation. We observe nonequilibrium steady state solution characterized by a warm turbulence, that is an energy and particle cascade superimposed on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. We use a dimensional analysis approach to relate the thermodynamic quantities of the steady state with the characteristics of the forcing and dissipation terms. In pa…
