If a beam of unpolarized positrons (which is considered as a sum of two fractions with opposite helicities) passes through an intense circular polarized laser radiation these fractions may be separated. For high laser flash intensity each positron will interact with $k_0\gg$1 laser photons subsequently (linear multiple compton scattering process). Due to difference in the compton cross-section for positrons polarized in opposite directions the mean final energy of each fraction will be different. It allows to get a polarized positron beam using the momentum selection (with some intensity loss). Estimations show the possibility to obtain a positron beam with 35% longitudinal polarization and 25% intensity from the initial one for focussed laser flash with total energy 5J and positron beam with energy 5 GeV.
The uncertainty of Compton backscattering process is studied by virtue of analytical formulas, and the special effects of variant energy spread and energy drift on the systematic uncertainty estimation are also studied with Monte Carlo sampling technique. These quantitative conclusions are especially important for the understanding the uncertainty of beam energy measurement system.
An electron passing through a counter propagating intense laser beam can interact with a few laser photons with emission of a hard photon in each collision event. In contrast with the well-known nonlinear Compton backscattering process the above mentioned process may be named as multiple Compton backscattering process (MCBS). In this paper we have investigated the evolution of the electron energy distribution during MCBS process using Monte-Carlo (M-C) simulation. The main characteristics of such a distribution as mean energy and variance obtained by M-C technique were compared with analytical…
Positron sources are critical components of the future linear collider projects. This is essentially due to the high luminosity required, orders of magnitude higher than existing ones. In addition, polarization of the positron beam rather expands the physics research potential of the machine. In this framework, the Compton sources for polarized positron production are taken into account where the high energy gamma rays are produced by the Compton scattering and subsequently converted into the polarized electron-positron pairs in a target-converter. The Compton multiple Interaction Point (IP) l…
Usually, photons are described by plane waves with a definite 4-momentum. In addition to plane-wave photons, "twisted photons" have recently entered the field of modern laser optics; these are coherent superpositions of plane waves with a defined projection hbar*m of the orbital angular momentum onto the propagation axis, where m is integer. In this paper, we show that it is possible to produce high-energy twisted photons by Compton backscattering of twisted laser photons off ultra-relativistic electrons. Such photons may be of interest for experiments related to the excitation and disintegrat…
Compton scattered x-rays can be generated using a configuration consisting of a single, ultra-intense laser pulse, and a shaped gas target. The gas target incorporates a hydrodynamically formed density spike, which nonlinearly scatters the incident pump radiation, to produce a counter-propagating electromagnetic wiggler. This self-generated wiggler field Compton scatters from electrons accelerated in the laser wakefield of the pump radiation. The nonlinear scattering mechanism in the density spike is examined theoretically and numerically in order to optimize the Compton scattered radiation. I…
Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source, a $γ$-ray beam line of 10MeV order was proposed recently. The beam line is expected to generate $γ$-ray with maximum energy of 22MeV by backward Compton scattering between CO$_2$ laser and electron in the 3.5GeV storage ring of future Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The flux of non-collimated $γ$-ray can be 10$^9$ $\sim$ 10$^{10}$s$^{-1}$ if a commercial CO$_2$ laser of 100W order output power is employed and injected with optimized settings.
We describe a scheme for producing polarised positrons at the ILC from polarised X-rays created by Compton scattering of a few-GeV electron beam off a CO2 or YAG laser. This scheme is very energy effective using high finesse laser cavities in conjunction with an electron storage ring.
For a number of physical studies which are planned to be made with the next generation colliders, it is necessary to use polarized beams of both electrons and positrons. The problem of producing and acceleration of polarized electrons may be considered to be solved, but the existing approaches to create polarized positron beams do not ensure the parameters required. This work proposes a new approach to produce polarized positron beams, which is based on the process of multiple Compton backscattering of unpolarized ultrarelativistic positrons in the field of intense circularly polarized laser w…
The new method for producing of the polarized relativistic positrons is suggested. A beam of unpolarized positrons accelerated up to a few GeV can be polarized during a head-on collision with an intense circularly polarized lazer wave. After a multiple Compton backscattering process the initial positrons may lose a substantial part of its energy and, as consequence, may acquire the significant longitudinal polarization. The simple formulas for the final positron energy and polarization degree depended on the laser flash parameters have been obtained. The comparison of efficiences for the sugge…
In a number of papers an attractive method of laser polarization of electrons (positrons) at storage rings or linear colliders has been proposed. We show that these suggestions are incorrect and based on errors in simulation of multiple Compton scattering and in calculation of the Compton spin-flip cross sections. We argue that the equilibrium polarization in this method is zero.
Twisted photons are not plane waves, but superpositions of plane waves with a defined projection hbar m of the orbital angular momentum onto the propagation axis (m is integer and may attain values m >> 1). Here, we describe in detail the possibility to produce high-energy twisted photons by backward Compton scattering of twisted laser photons on ultra-relativistic electrons with a Lorentz-factor gamma=E/(m_e c^2) >> 1. When a twisted laser photon with the energy hbar omega ~ 1 eV performs a collision with an electron and scatters backward, the final twisted photon conserves the angular moment…
The beam energy measurement system for the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider is described. The method of Compton backscattering of $CO$ laser photons on the electron beam is used. The relative systematic uncertainty of the beam energy determination is estimated as 6\cdot10^{-5}. It was obtained through comparison of the results of the beam energy measurements using the Compton backscattering and resonance depolarization methods.
A number of theoretical calculations have studied the effect of radiation reaction forces on radiation distributions in strong field counter-propagating electron beam-laser interactions, but could these effects - including quantum corrections - be observed in interactions with realistic bunches and focusing fields, as is hoped in a number of soon to be proposed experiments? We present numerical calculations of the angularly resolved radiation spectrum from an electron bunch with parameters similar to those produced in laser wakefield acceleration experiments, interacting with an intense, ultra…
Spatial distribution of intensity, degree and direction of linear polarization of tagged photon beam, which is obtained due to Compton backscattering of laser light on high-energy electron beam, are calculated. Effects of angular dispersion and spatial spread of electron beam are taken into account. Calculations have been carried out for the example of LEGS facility.
The circularly polarized gamma-quanta with energy > 10 MeV are formed during Compton backscattering of circularly polarized laser photons on an electron beam with energy 1.26 GeV. The contribution of nonlinear processes for planned parameters of a laser flash[T. Okugi, Y. Kurihara and M. Chiba, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 35, p. 3677 (1996).] can be rather significant, that leads to deterioration of polarization of a resulting gamma-beam. The direct method of measurement of gamma-beam circular polarization will allow not only to estimate a correctness of the theoretical calculations, but also to use t…
Compton inverse radiation emitted due to backscattering of laser pulses off the relativistic electrons possesses high spectral density and high energy of photons - in hard x-ray up to gamma-ray energies - because of short wavelength of laser radiation as compared with the classical electromagnetic devices such as undulators. In this report, the possibility of such radiation to monochromatization by means of collimation is studied. Two approaches have been considered for the description of the spectral-angular density of Compton radiation based on the classical field theory and on the quantum e…
Electron storage rings of GeV energy with laser pulse stacking cavities are promising intense sources of polarised hard photons which, via pair production, can be used to generate polarised positron beams. Dynamics of electron bunches circulating in a storage ring and interacting with high-power laser pulses is studied both analytically and by simulation. Common features and differences in the behaviour of bunches interacting with an extremely high power laser pulse and with a moderate pulse are discussed. Also considerations on particular lattice designs for Compton gamma rings are presented.
Compton scattering provides one of the most promising scheme to obtain polarized positrons for the next generation of $e^-$ -- $e^+$ colliders. Moreover it is an attractive method to produce monochromatic high energy polarized gammas for nuclear applications and X-rays for compact light sources. In this framework a four-mirror Fabry-Pérot cavity has been installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF - KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and is used to produce an intense flux of polarized gamma rays by Compton scattering \cite{ipac-mightylaser}. For electrons at the ATF energy (1.28 GeV) Compton scattering …
As part of the positron source R&D for future $e^+-e^-$ colliders and Compton based compact light sources, a high finesse non-planar four-mirror Fabry-Perot cavity has recently been installed at the ATF (KEK, Tsukuba, Japan). The first measurements of the gamma ray flux produced with a such cavity using a pulsed laser is presented here. We demonstrate the production of a flux of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.2 gamma rays per bunch crossing ($\sim3\times10^6$ gammas per second) during the commissioning.
The beam energy measurement system (BEMS) for the upgraded Beijing electron-positron collider BEPC-II is described. The system is based on measuring the energies of Compton back-scattered photons. The relative systematic uncertainty of the electron and positron beam energy determination is estimated as 2 \cdot 10^{-5}. The relative uncertainty of the beam's energy spread is about 6 %.
This document contains a proposal of the BEPC-II collider beam energy calibration system (IHEP, Beijing). The system is based on Compton backscattering of carbon dioxide laser radiation, producing a beam of high energy photons. Their energy spectrum is then accurately measured by HPGe detector. The high-energy spectrum edge will allow to determine the average electron or positron beam energy with relative accuracy about 3x10^-5.
Presently large efforts are conducted towards the development of highly brilliant gamma beams via Compton back scattering of photons from a high-brilliance electron beam, either on the basis of a normal-conducting electron linac or a (superconducting) Energy Recovery Linac (ERL). Particularly ERL's provide an extremely brilliant electron beam, thus enabling to generate highest-quality gamma beams. A 2.5 MeV gamma beam with an envisaged intensity of 10^15 s^-1, as ultimately envisaged for an ERL-based gamma-beam facility, narrow band width (10^-3), and extremely low emittance (10^-4 mm^2 mrad^2…
The backscattering of laser radiation by a relativistic electron beam is a widely used method for measuring the spin polarization of electrons. We consider again the properties of the scattering process paying special attention to recoil electrons. Based on this consideration we propose the concept of the Compton polarimeter in which, in addition to all the polarization components, it becomes possible to accurately measure the energy and other parameters of the electron beam. To demonstrate the capabilities of the method we conduct a Monte Carlo simulations of the polarimeter developed for the…
