A new possibility of laser cooling of alkaline-earth-metal and Ytterbium atoms using a two-photon transition is analyzed. We consider a $^{1}S_{0}$ - $^{1}S_{0}$ transition, with excitation in near resonance with the $^{1}P_{1}$ level. This greatly increases the two-photon transition rate, allowing an effective transfer of momentum. The experimental implementation of this technique is discussed and we show that for Calcium, for example, two-photon cooling can be used to achieve a Doppler limit of 123 microKelvin. The efficiency of this cooling scheme and the main loss mechanisms are analyzed.
Optical frequency measurements of the intercombination line $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{1}$ in the isotopes of ytterbium are carried out with the use of sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy on an atomic beam. A dispersive signal is generated to which a master laser is locked, while frequency counting of an auxiliary beat signal is performed via a frequency comb referenced to a hydrogen maser. The relative separations between the lines are used to evaluate the $^{3}P_{1}$-level magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole constants for the fermionic isotopes. The center of gravity for the …
We describe Doppler spectroscopy of Bose-Einstein condensates of ytterbium atoms using a narrow optical transition. We address the optical clock transition around 578 nm between the ${^1}S_0$ and ${^3}P_0$ states with a laser system locked on a high-finesse cavity. We show how the absolute frequency of the cavity modes can be determined within a few tens of kHz using high-resolution spectroscopy on molecular iodine. We show that optical spectra reflect the velocity distribution of expanding condensates in free fall or after releasing them inside an optical waveguide. We demonstrate sub-kHz spe…
We report on the sub-Doppler laser cooling of neutral $^{171}$Yb and $^{173}$Yb in a magneto-optical trap using the $^{1}S_{0}$-$^{1}P_{1}$ transition at 398.9nm. We use two independent means to estimate the temperature of the atomic cloud for several of the Yb isotopes. The two methods of MOT-cloud-imaging and release-and-recapture show consistency with one another. Temperatures below 400$μ$K and 200$μ$K are recorded for $^{171}$Yb and $^{173}$Yb, respectively, while ~1mK is measured for both $^{172}$Yb and $^{174}$Yb. By comparison, the associated 1D Doppler cooling temperature limit is 694$…
Engineering controllable, strongly interacting many-body quantum systems is at the frontier of quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Arrays of laser-cooled neutral atoms in optical tweezers have emerged as a promising platform, because of their flexibility and the potential for strong interactions via Rydberg states. Existing neutral atom array experiments utilize alkali atoms, but alkaline-earth atoms offer many advantages in terms of coherence and control, and also open the door to new applications in precision measurement and timekeeping. In this work, we present a techniqu…
The ytterbium atom is widely used in the fields of atomic physics, cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum information processing and optical frequency standards. There is however a strong dispersion among the reported values of the ${}^1{\rm S}_0 \rightarrow {}^1{\rm P}_1$ transition frequency. In this article, we present two independent measurements of the absolute frequency of this transition performed with two different wavemeters using atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. The cancellation of Doppler shifts is obtained by fine tuning the angle between the probe laser and the atomic beam. The …
An ultra-stable optical clock based on coherent population trapping effect of alkaline-earth ions, such as Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$, is analyzed here. The proposed transitions use the odd isotopes, so that the frequency shift is insensitive to the applied magnetic field. To enhance the signal, a large number of ions are trapped in a linear Paul trap, and laser cooled to crystallize such that the ions are in the Lamb-Dicke regime to avoid first order Doppler shift. Other relevant frequency shifts are also analyzed. Further techniques to improve the stability of the clock signal are discussed.
We study sympathetic cooling of the radial ion motion in a linear RF trap in mixed barium-ytterbium chains. Barium ions are Doppler-cooled, while ytterbium ions are cooled through their interaction with cold barium ions. We estimate the efficiency of sympathetic cooling by measuring the average occupation quantum numbers, and thus the temperature, of all radial normal modes of motion in the ion chain. The full set of orderings in a chain of two barium and two ytterbium ions have been probed, and we show that the average thermal occupation numbers for all chain configurations strongly depend on…
New experimental quantum simulation platforms have recently been implemented with divalent atoms trapped in optical tweezer arrays with promising performance. The second valence electron also brings new propects through the so-called Isolated Core Excitation (ICE), however autoionization presents a strong limitation to this use. In this study, we propose and demonstrate a new approach to applying a sizable light shift to a Rydberg state with close-to-resonant ICE while avoiding auto-ionization. In particular, we have investigated ICE of ytterbium atoms in $^1S_0$ Rydberg states. Spectroscopic …
We demonstrate stabilisation of an ultraviolet diode laser via Doppler free spectroscopy of Ytterbium ions in a discharge. Our technique employs polarization spectroscopy, which produces a natural dispersive lineshape whose zero-crossing is largely immune to environmental drifts, making this signal an ideal absolute frequency reference for Yb$^+$ ion trapping experiments. We stabilise an external-cavity diode laser near 369 nm for cooling Yb$^+$ ions, using amplitude-modulated polarisation spectroscopy and a commercial PID feedback system. We achieve stable, low-drift locking with a standard d…
We describe the design, construction and operation of a versatile dual-species Zeeman slower for both Cs and Yb, which is easily adaptable for use with other alkali metals and alkaline earths. With the aid of analytic models and numerical simulation of decelerator action, we highlight several real-world problems affecting the performance of a slower and discuss effective solutions. To capture Yb into a magneto-optical trap (MOT), we use the broad $^1S_0$ to $^1P_1$ transition at 399 nm for the slower and the narrow $^1S_0$ to $^3P_1$ intercombination line at 556 nm for the MOT. The Cs MOT and …
A stable light source obtained using sum-frequency generation (SFG) is developed for high-resolution spectroscopy at 578 nm. Hyperfine transitions of molecular iodine are observed by using the SFG light source with saturation spectroscopy. The light source is frequency stabilized to the observed hyperfine transition and achieves a stability of 2*10-12 for a 1-s averaging time. The absolute frequency of the light source stabilized on the a1 component of the R(37)16-1 transition is determined as 518304551833 (2) kHz. This transition serves as a frequency reference for the 1S0 - 3P0 optical clock…
We demonstrate all-optical implementation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a two-electron Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb atoms by coupling two hyperfine ground states with a narrow optical transition. Due to the SU($N$) symmetry of the $^1$S$_0$ ground-state manifold which is insensitive to external magnetic fields, an optical AC Stark effect is applied to split the ground spin states, which exhibits a high stability compared with experiments on alkali and lanthanide atoms, and separate out an effective spin-1/2 subspace from other hyperfine levels for the realization of SOC. The dephasing spin dynami…
Large amounts of hyperpolarized 3He gas with high nuclear polarization rates are required for use in neutron spin filters or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of human lung. Very high efficiency can be obtained by metastability exchange optical pumping using multimode lasers to excite the 23S-23P transition at 1083 nm. Broadband Ytterbium-doped tunable fiber lasers have been designed for that particular application. Different options for the architecture of the fiber oscillator are presented and compared. Emphasis is given to a linear cavity configuration that includes a high reflectivity fib…
We report measurements of isotope shifts for the five spinless Yb isotopes on the $6s^2\,^1\textrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5d6s\,^1\textrm{D}_2$ transition using Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy. We combine these data with existing measurements on two transitions in Yb$^+$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 123002 (2020)], where deviation from King-plot linearity showed hints of a new bosonic force carrier at the 3$σ$ level. The combined data strongly reduces the significance of the new-physics signal. We show that the observed nonlinearity in the joint Yb/Yb$^+$ King-plot analysis can be accounted for by th…
Narrow s-wave features with subthermal widths are predicted for the ^1Pi_g photoassociation spectra of cold alkaline earth atoms. The phenomenon is explained by numerical and analytical calculations. These show that only a small subthermal range of collision energies near threshold contributes to the s-wave features that are excited when the atoms are very far apart. The resonances survive thermal averaging, and may be detectable for Ca cooled near the Doppler cooling temperature of the 4^1P <- 4^1S laser cooling transition.
We propose a very long baseline atom interferometer test of Einstein's equivalence principle (EEP) with ytterbium and rubidium extending over 10m of free fall. In view of existing parametrizations of EEP violations, this choice of test masses significantly broadens the scope of atom interferometric EEP tests with respect to other performed or proposed tests by comparing two elements with high atomic numbers. In a first step, our experimental scheme will allow reaching an accuracy in the Eötvös ratio of $7\times 10^{-13}$. This achievement will constrain violation scenarios beyond our present k…
Neutral atom qubits with Rydberg-mediated interactions are a leading platform for developing large-scale coherent quantum systems. In the majority of experiments to date, the Rydberg states are not trapped by the same potential that confines ground state atoms, resulting in atom loss and constraints on the achievable interaction time. In this work, we demonstrate that the Rydberg states of an alkaline earth atom, ytterbium, can be stably trapped by the same red-detuned optical tweezer that also confines the ground state, by leveraging the polarizability of the Yb$^+$ ion core. Using the previo…
The properties of the electronic ground state of the polar and paramagnetic europium-$S$-state-atom molecules have been investigated. Ab initio techniques have been applied to compute the potential energy curves for the europium-alkali-metal-atom, Eu$X$ ($X$=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), europium-alkaline-earth-metal-atom, Eu$Y$ ($Y$=Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba), and europium-ytterbium, EuYb, molecules in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the high-spin electronic ground state. The spin restricted open-shell coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative triple excitations, RCCSD(T), w…
A sharp resonance line that appears in three-photon transitions between the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0}$ states of alkaline earth and Yb atoms is proposed as an optical frequency standard. This proposal permits the use of the even isotopes, in which the clock transition is narrower than in proposed clocks using the odd isotopes and the energy interval is not affected by external magnetic fields or the polarization of trapping light. The method has the unique feature that the width and rate of the clock transition can be continuously adjusted from the $MHz$ level to sub-$mHz$ without loss of sig…
We calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 50 atomic linewidths to the red of the ^1S_0-^1P_1 cooling transition. We evaluate loss rate coefficients due to both radiative and nonradiative state-changing mechanisms for temperatures at and below the Doppler cooling temperature. We solve the Schrodinger equation with a complex potential to represent spontaneous decay, but also give analytic models for various limits. Vibrational structure due to molecular photoassociation is present in the trap loss spectrum. Relatively broad st…
We study the formation and destabilization of dark states in a single trapped 88Sr+ ion caused by the cooling and repumping laser fields required for Doppler cooling and fluorescence detection of the ion. By numerically solving the time-dependent density matrix equations for the eight-level system consisting of the sublevels of the 5s 2S1/2, 5p 2P1/2, and 4d 2D3/2 states, we analyze the different types of dark states and how to prevent them in order to maximize the scattering rate, which is crucial for both the cooling and the detection of the ion. The influence of the laser linewidths and ion…
We report the construction of a simple, light weight and compact atomic beam spectroscopy cell for Strontium atoms. The cell is built using glass blowing technique and includes a simple Titanium Sublimation Pump for active pumping of the residual and background gases to maintain ultra-high vacuum. Commercially available and electrically heated dispenser source is used to generate the beam of Sr atoms. We perform spectroscopy on the $5s^2\ ^1S_0\longrightarrow 5s\ 5p\ ^1P_1$ transition to obtain a well resolved Doppler free spectroscopic signal for frequency stabilization of the laser source. T…
The properties of photoassociation (PA) spectra near the intercombination line (the weak transition between $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{1}$ states) of group II atoms are theoretically investigated. As an example we have carried out a calculation for Calcium atoms colliding at ultra low temperatures of 1 mK, 1 $μ$K, and 1 nK. Unlike in most current photoassociation spectroscopy the Doppler effect can significantly affect the shape of the investigated lines. Spectra are obtained using Ca--Ca and Ca--Ca$^*$ short-range {\it ab initio} potentials and long-range van der Waals and resonance dipole poten…

Gray molasses is a powerful tool for sub-Doppler laser cooling of atoms to low temperatures. For alkaline atoms, this technique is commonly implemented with cooling lasers which are blue-detuned from either the D1 or D2 line. Here we show that efficient gray molasses can be implemented on the D2 line of 40K with red-detuned lasers. We obtained temperatures of 48(2) microKelvin, which enables direct loading of 9.2(3)*10^6 atoms from a magneto-optical trap into an optical dipole trap. We support our findings by a one-dimensional model and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the optical Bl…
We report the observation of laser induced birefringence (LIB) in a wavelength-mismatched cascade system (J=0 \leftrightarrow J=1 \leftrightarrow J=0 transitions) of inhomogeneously broadened ytterbium atoms with strong pump and probe fields. We investigate the transmission spectrum of two circular polarization (σ_p^+ and σ_p^-) components of strong probe field at fixed frequency, depending on the detuning of circularly polarized (σ_c^-) coupling field from two-photon resonance. We find that σ_p^+ (σ_p^-) polarized component exhibits a narrow electromagnetically induced absorption (transparenc…
We observe an inverted crossover resonance in $π$-driven four-level systems, where $F'-F=0,+1$. The signal is observed through saturated absorption spectroscopy of the $(6s^{2})$ $^{1}S_{0}$ $-$ $(6s6p)$ $^{3}P_{1}$ transition in $^{171}$Yb, where the nuclear spin $I=1/2$. The enhanced absorption signal is used to generate a dispersive curve for 556 nm laser frequency stabilisation and the stabilised light cools $^{171}$Yb atoms in a two-stage magneto-optical trap, achieving temperatures of 20 $μ$K. The Doppler-free spectroscopy scheme is further used to measure isotopic frequency shifts and h…
Isotope selective optical excitation of atoms is important for experiments with neutral atoms, metrology, and work with trapped ions, including quantum information processing. Polarization-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is used to frequency stabilise a tunable external cavity laser diode system at 398.9 nm for isotope selective photoionization of neutral Yb atoms. This spectroscopy technique is used to measure isotope resolved dispersive features from transitions within a see through configuration Ytterbium hollow-cathode discharge lamp. This Doppler-free dichroic polarization spectroscopy i…
Laser cooling is a key ingredient for quantum control of atomic systems in a variety of settings. In divalent atoms, two-stage Doppler cooling is typically used to bring atoms to the uK regime. Here, we implement a pulsed radial cooling scheme using the ultranarrow 1S0-3P0 clock transition in ytterbium to realize sub-recoil temperatures, down to tens of nK. Together with sideband cooling along the one-dimensional lattice axis, we efficiently prepare atoms in shallow lattices at an energy of 6 lattice recoils. Under these conditions key limits on lattice clock accuracy and instability are reduc…
We develop the method of Ramsey spectroscopy with the use of an additional field compensating the frequency shifts of clock optical transitions. This method in combination with the method of magnetically induced excitation of strongly forbidden transitions $^1S_0$$\to$$^3P_0$ [A.V. Taichenachev, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 083001 (2006)] allows the practically complete compensation (down to the fractional level below 10$^{-17}$ with respect to the unperturbed clock frequency) of field shifts of various origin for even isotopes of alkaline-earth-like atoms confined to an optical lattice …
We propose a novel Sisyphus cooling scheme for atoms confined in a far off resonance optical dipole trap. Utilizing the differential trap-induced AC Stark shift, two electronic levels of the atom are resonantly coupled by a cooling laser preferentially near the trap bottom. After absorption of a cooling photon, the atom loses energy by climbing the steeper potential, and then spontaneously decays preferentially away from the trap bottom. The proposed method is particularly suited to cooling alkaline-earth-like atoms where two-level systems with narrow electronic transitions are present. Numeri…
We extend the technique originally proposed by Honda et al.to measure the temperature of Ytterbium and alkine-earth atoms confined in a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT). The method is based on the analysis of excitation spectra obtained by probing the 1S0->3P1 inter-combination line. Thanks to a careful analysis and modeling of the effects caused by the MOT light on the probe transition we overcome the resolution and precision limits encountered in previous works. Ground state light shift and Rabi broadening are measured and successfully compared with calculated values. This knowledge allows us to p…
A STIRAP-like scheme is proposed to exploit a three-photon resonance taking place in alkaline-earth-metal ions. This scheme is designed for state transfer between the two fine structure components of the metastable D-state which are two excited states that can serve as optical or THz qu-bit. The advantage of a coherent three-photon process compared to two-photon STIRAP lies in the possibility of exact cancellation of the first order Doppler shift which opens the way for an application to a sample composed of many ions. The transfer efficiency and its dependence with experimental parameters are…
A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a quantum phase of matter achieved at low temperatures. Photons, one of the most prominent species of bosons, do not typically condense due to the lack of a particle number-conservation. We recently described a photon thermalization mechanism which gives rise to a grand canonical ensemble of light with effective photon number conservation between a subsystem and a particle reservoir. This mechanism occurs during Doppler laser cooling of atoms where the atoms serve as a temperature reservoir while the cooling laser photons serve as a particle reservoir. Here …
