The behavior of a two dimensional, steady turbulent mixing layer was investigated. Besides the usual velocity components, all the contributing components of the Reynolds Stresses are also calculated and presented. The results indicated that in the two dimensional steady turbulent mixing layers the theory of self-preservation is not valid for all the flow domain, and that the flow is turbulent regime is divided into two areas. Through calculation of Reynolds Stress components at the point of initiation of the flow, it was shown that the turbulent flow in the area containing the point of singularity of the flow is not, as previously believed, self-preserved.
A plane turbulent mixing in a shear flow of an ideal homogeneous fluid confined between two relatively close rigid walls is considered. The character of the flow is determined by interaction of vortices arising at the nonlinear stage of the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability development and by turbulent friction. In the framework of the shallow water theory and a three-layer representation of the flow, one-dimensional models of a mixing layer are proposed. The obtained equations allow one to determine averaged boundaries of the region of intense fluid mixing. Stationary solutions of the governing e…
Majority of theoretical results regarding turbulent mixing are based on the model of ideal flows with zero correlation time. We discuss the reasons why such results may fail for real flows and develop a scheme which makes it possible to match real flows to ideal flows. In particular we introduce the concept of mixing dimension of flows which can take fractional values. For real incompressible flows, the mixing dimension exceeds the topological dimension; this leads to a local inhomogeneity of mixing --- a phenomenon which is not observed for ideal flows and has profound implications, for insta…
Turbulent mixing is studied in the Lagrangian framework with an approach based on the complex network formalism. We consider the motion of passive, noninertial particles inside a turbulent channel simulated at $Re_τ = 950$. The time-dependent network is built to evaluate the transfer of tracers between thin wall-parallel layers which partition the channel in the wall-normal direction. By doing so, we are able to assess the spatial and temporal complexities arising from turbulence dynamics and their influence on the mixing process. This approach highlights the effects of small-scale features of…
A temporal complex network-based approach is proposed as a novel formulation to investigate turbulent mixing from a Lagrangian viewpoint. By exploiting a spatial proximity criterion, the dynamics of a set of fluid particles is geometrized into a time-varying weighted network. Specifically, a numerically solved turbulent channel flow is employed as an exemplifying case. We show that the time-varying network is able to clearly describe the particle swarm dynamics, in a parametrically robust and computationally inexpensive way. The network formalism enables to straightforwardly identify transient…
Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent mixing and heat transfer in the jet of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase systems dynamics. The differential equations for axisymmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system are considered for the free and confined jets. The parameters of the turbulent mixing in a free jet and in two-phase flow in a chamber are modelled and analyzed. One example is also done for high-temperature flow of the liquid metal melt cooled by wa…
Understanding and modeling turbulent fluxes and entrainment in a gravity current
Heat transport in turbulent thermal convection increases with the thermal forcing, but in almost all studies the rate of this increase is slower than it would be if transport became independent of the molecular diffusivities -- the heat transport scaling is slower than the mixing-length (or `ultimate') scaling. In configurations driven by either thermal boundary conditions or internal heating, thermal boundary layers instead lead to a boundary-limited (or `classical') scaling. With net-zero internal heating and cooling in different regions, mixing-length scaling can occur because heat need not…
The ultimate goal of a sound theory of turbulence in fluids is to close in a rational way the Reynolds equations, namely to express the tensor of turbulent stress as a function of the time average of the velocity field. Based on the idea that dissipation in fully developed turbulence is by singular events resulting from an evolution described by the Euler equations, it has been recently observed that the closure problem is strongly restricted, and that it implies that the turbulent stress is a non local function in space of the average velocity field, a kind of extension of classical Boussines…
Spatio-temporal deterministic chaos at small Taylor-Reynolds numbers $Re_λ \lesssim 40$ and distributed chaos at turbulent $Re_λ \gtrsim 40$ in passive scalar dynamics have been studied using results of direct numerical simulations of homogeneous incompressible flows (with and without mean gradient of the passive scalar) for $8 \leq Re_λ < 700$ and of a reacting turbulent mixing layer. It is shown that the deterministic chaos in the passive scalar fluctuations at the small $Re_λ$ is characterized by exponential spatial (wavenumber) spectrum: $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_c)$, whereas the distributed…
We present a new physically-motivated parameterization, based on the ratio of Thorpe and Ozmidov scales, for the irreversible turbulent flux coefficient $Γ_{\mathcal M}= {\mathcal M}/ε$, i.e. the ratio of the irreversible rate ${\mathcal M}$ at which the background potential energy increases in a stratified flow due to macroscopic motions to the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. Our parameterization covers all three key phases (crucially, in time) of a shear-induced stratified turbulence life cycle: the initial, `hot' growing phase, the intermediate energetically forced phase, and …
The asymmetries that arise when a mixing layer involves two miscible fluids of differing densities are investigated using incompressible (low-speed) direct numerical simulations. The simulations are performed in the temporal configuration with very large domain sizes, to allow the mixing layers to reach prolonged states of fully-turbulent self-similar growth. Imposing a mean density variation breaks the mean symmetry relative to the classical single-fluid temporal mixing layer problem. Unlike prior variable-density mixing layer simulations in which the streams are composed of the same fluids w…
In the current study, the influence of turbulent mixing and local reaction rates on deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) was investigated using a state-of-the-art large eddy simulation (LES) strategy. Specifically, detonation attenuation by a porous medium, and the subsequent re-initiation for methane-oxygen, a moderately unstable mixture, was considered. The purpose of the investigation was to validate the numerical strategy with previous experimental observations, and to determine what specific roles turbulent mixing and shock compression have on flame acceleration during the final st…
Passive scalar mixing, produced by Lagrangian chaos generated a) by quasi-periodic (integrable) motion of three quasi-point vortices and b) by chaotic motion of three and six quasi-point vortices, has been studied and compared with turbulent mixing of passive scalar in 2D and 3D steady isotropic homogeneous turbulence and in turbulent wakes behind grid and behind cylinder. Results of numerical and laboratory experiments have been used and effective diffusivity approximation as well as distributed chaos approach have been applied to this problem.
The effect of the rotation on the turbulent mixing of two miscible fluids of small contrasting density, induced by Faraday instability, is investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS). We quantify the irreversible mixing which depicts the conversion of the available potential energy (APE) to the background potential energy (BPE) through irreversible mixing rate $\mathcal{M}$. We demonstrate that at lower forcing amplitudes, the turbulent kinetic energy ($t.k.e.$) increases with an increase in the Coriolis frequency $f$ till $\left(f/ω\right)^2<0.25$, where $ω$ is the forcing frequency…
Despite its limitations, Prandtl's mixing length model is widely applied in modelling turbulent free shear flows. Prandtl's extended model addresses many of the shortfalls of the original model, but is not so widely used, in part due to additional mathematical complexities that arise in its derivation and implementation. Furthermore, in both models Prandtl neglects the kinematic viscosity on the basis that it is much smaller in magnitude than the turbulent viscosity. Recent work has shown that including the kinematic viscosity in the original model has both mathematical and physical advantages…

The effect of the rotation on the turbulent mixing of two miscible fluids of small contrasting density, produced by Faraday instability, is investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS). We demonstrate that at lower forcing amplitudes, the t.k.e. increases with an increase in f till (f/ω\right)^2<0.25, where ωis the forcing frequency, during the sub-harmonic instability phase. The increase in t.k.e. increases B_V, which increases the total potential energy (TPE). A portion of TPE is the APE. Some parts of APE can convert to $t.k.e.$ via B_V, whereas the rest converts to internal energy…
In this study, ensembles of experimental data are presented and utilized to compare and validate two models used in the simulation of variable density, compressible turbulent mixing. Though models of this kind (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and Large Eddy Simulations) have been validated extensively with more canonical flows in previous studies, the present approach offers novelty in the complexity of the geometry, the ensemble based validation, and the uniformity of the computational framework on which the models are tested. Moreover, all experimental and computational tasks were completed …
Micromixer is a key element in lab on a chip for broad applications in the analysis and measurement of chemistry and engineering. Previous investigations reported electrokinetic (EK) turbulence could be realized in a Y-type micromixer with a cross-sectional dimension of 100 $μ$m order. Although the ultrafast turbulent mixing can be generated at a bulk flow Reynolds number of O(1), the micromixer has not been optimized. In this investigation, we systematically investigated the influence of electric field intensity, AC frequency, electric conductivity ratio, and channel width at the entrance on …
Direct numerical simulations of a temporally-developing, low-speed, variable-density, turbulent, plane mixing layer are performed. The Navier-Stokes equations in the low-Mach number approximation are solved using a novel algorithm based on an extended version of the velocity-vorticity formulation used by Kim et al. (1987) for incompressible flows. Four cases with density ratios $s=1, 2, 4$ and 8 are considered. The simulations are run with a Prandtl number of 0.7 and achieve a $Re_λ$ up to 150 during the self-similar evolution of the mixing layer. It is found that the growth rate of the mixing…
We study the morphology of Eulerian vortical structures and their interaction with density interfaces in increasingly turbulent stably-stratified shear layers. We analyse the three-dimensional, simultaneous velocity and density fields obtained in the stratified inclined duct laboratory experiment. We track, across 15 datasets, the evolution of coherent structures from pre-turbulent Holmboe waves, through intermittent turbulence, to full turbulence and mixing. We use the Rortex--Shear decomposition of the vorticity field into a pure rotational part (the rortex vector), and a non-rotational part…
The mixing process of multiple jets of liquefied petroleum gas and air in a diffusion flame is numerically analysed. The case study considers a four-port array burner where the fuel is injected by four peripheral nozzles and mixed with the surrounding air. Simulations are conducted with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique, and the turbulence effect is modelled with the realizable k-e model. In addition, the eddy dissipation model is implemented to calculate the effect of the turbulent chemical reaction rate. Results show that the essential mixture mechanism occurs within a flame cone…
Solvent exchange is a process involving mixing between a good solvent with dissolved solute and a poor solvent. The process creates local oversaturation which causes the nucleation of minute solute droplets. Such ternary systems on a macro-scale have remained unexplored in the turbulent regime. We experimentally study the solvent exchange process by injecting mixtures of ethanol and trans-anethole into water, forming a turbulent buoyant jet in upward direction. Locally, turbulent mixing causes oversaturation of the trans-anethole following turbulent entrainment. We optically measure the concen…
The present paper is devoted to the mixing and heat transfer features of mutually immiscible liquids in the two-fluid turbulent heterogeneous jet flow. Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent jets of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase system dynamics. Differential equations for the axially symmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system were considered for the jet from a nozzle into a space filled with another fluid that is not miscible with the first one. Par…
The entrainment of ambient fluid into a turbulent shear flow has been a topic of wide interest for several decades. To estimate the entrainment of ambient fluid into turbulent jet, it is essential to define the boundary of the jet. The question arises as to what should be the appropriate criterion to determine the edge of the turbulent jet. From the present DNS simulations, we observe that there is a need to define two boundaries for the turbulent jet, namely, the Rotational/Irrotational (R/IR) interface termed here as "Outer boundary" and the Turbulent/Non-Turbulent (T/NT) interface as "Inner…
Turbulent mixing layers over cavities can couple with acoustic waves and lead to undesired oscillations. To understand the nonlinear aspects of this phenomenon, a turbulent mixing layer over a deep cavity at Reynolds number 150 000 is considered and its response to harmonic forcing is analysed with large-eddy simulations (LES) and linearised Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE). As a model of incoming acoustic perturbations, spatially uniform time-harmonic forcing is applied at the cavity end, with amplitudes in the wide range 0.045-8.9% of the bulk velocity. Compressible LES provide reference nonli…
In this Part 2 we study further experimental properties of two-layer exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are turbulent, strongly-stratified, shear-driven, and continuously-forced. We analyse the same state-of-the-art data sets using the same core shear layer methodology as in Part 1, but we focus here on turbulent energetics and mixing statistics. The detailed analysis of kinetic and scalar energy budgets reveals the specificity and scalings of SID turbulence, while energy spectra provide insight into the current strengths and limitations of our experimental data. The ani…

We show that enhanced turbulent mixing can be used to mitigate airborne COVID-19 transmission by dispersing virus-laden clouds in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. A simple system of fan-driven turbulent jets is designed so as to minimize peak concentrations of passive contaminants on time scales short compared to the room ventilation time. Standard Reynolds-average and similarity methods are used, and combinations of circular and radial wall jets are considered. The turbulent diffusivity and contaminant mixing time are calculated. Results indicate that this approach can significantly reduce…
The mean momentum and heavy mass fraction, turbulent kinetic energy, and heavy mass fraction variance fields, as well as the budgets of their transport equations, are examined at several times during the evolution of a narrowband Richtmyer-Meshkov instability initiated by a Mach 1.84 shock traversing a perturbed interface separating gases with a density ratio of 3. The results are computed using the `quarter scale' data from four algorithms presented in the θ-group study of Thornber et al. [Phys. Fluids 29, 105107 (2017)]. The present study is inspired by a previous similar study of Rayleigh-T…
