Hyperspherical partial wave theory has been applied here in a new way in the calculation of the triple differential cross sections for the ionization of hydrogen atoms by electron impact at low energies for various equal-energy-sharing kinematic conditions. The agreement of the cross section results with the recent absolute measurements of Röder \textit {et al} [51] and with the latest theoretical results of the ECS and CCC calculations [29] for different kinematic conditions at 17.6 eV is very encouraging. The other calculated results, for relatively higher energies, are also generally satisfactory, particularly for large $Θ_{ab}$ geometries. In view of the present results, together with the fact that it is capable of describing unequal-energy-sharing kinematics [35], it may be said that the hyperspherical partial wave theory is quite appropriate for the description of ionization events of electron-hydrogen type systems. It is also clear that the present approach in the implementation of the hyperspherical partial wave theory is very appropriate.
The calculated double differential cross sections for 60eV energy, where the cross sections are also maximum, agree with the measured results of Shyn (1992) in a much better way compaired to other theories for such energies.
We present here triple differential cross sections for ionization of hydrogen atoms by electron impact at 1eV, 0.5eV and 0.3eV energy above threshold, calculated in the hyperspherical partial wave theory. The results are in very good agreement with the available semiclassical results of Deb and Crothers \cite{DC02} for these energies. With this, we are able to demonstrate that the hyperspherical partial wave theory yields good cross sections from 30 eV \cite{DPC03} down to near threshold for equal energy sharing kinematics.
Hyperspherical partial wave approach has been applied here in the study of double photoionization of the helium atom for equal energy sharing geometry at 20 eV excess energy. Calculations have been done both in length and velocity gauges and are found to agree with each other, with the CCC results and with experiments and exhibit some advantages of the corresponding three particle wave function over other wave functions in use.
With the classical three-dimensional ensemble model, we have investigated the microscopic recollision dynamics in nonsequential double ionization of helium by 800 nm laser pulses at 2.0 PW/cm^2. We demonstrate that the asymmetric energy sharing between the two electrons at recollision plays a decisive role in forming the experimentally observed V-shaped structure in the correlated longitudinal electron momentum spectrum at the high laser intensity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 263003 (2007)]. This asymmetric energy sharing recollision leaves footprints on the transverse electron momentum spectra, whic…
In this article we present triple differential cross sections for equal energy sharing kinematics for double photoionization of the helium atom at 20 and 40eV above threshold in the framework of the hyperspherical partial wave theory. This supplements our earlier work \cite{DCP03} in which we were successful in showing fully, gauge independence of the results in our formalism. Also in this work we treat cases in which the Stokes parameter S$_1 < 1$ so that partial polarization of the photon source is also taken into account. Agreement in shape with the Convergent Close Coupling \cite{BK03,HB98…
Using the recently developed concept of the 2-electron streak camera (see NJP 12, 103024 (2010)), we have studied the energy-sharing between the two ionizing electrons in single-photon double ionization of He(1s2s). We find that the most symmetric and asymmetric energy sharings correspond to different ionization dynamics with the ion's Coulomb potential significantly influencing the latter. This different dynamics for the two extreme energy sharings gives rise to different patterns in asymptotic observables and different time-delays between the emission of the two electrons. We show that the 2…
Application of the convergent close-coupling (CCC) method to electron-impact ionization of the ground state of atomic hydrogen is considered at incident energies of 15.6, 17.6, 20, 25, 27.2, 30, 54.4, 150 and 250 eV. Total through to fully differential cross sections are presented. Following the analysis of Stelbovics [submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (physics/9905020)] the equal-energy sharing cross sections are calculated using a solely coherent combination of total-spin-dependent ionization amplitudes, which are found to be simply a factor of two greater than the incoherent combination suggest…
The L-subshell ionization mechanism is studied in an ultra-thin osmium target bombarded by 4-6 MeV/u fluorine ions. Multiple ionization effects in the collisions are considered through the change of fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields while determining L-subshell ionization cross sections from L-line x-ray production cross sections. The L-subshell ionization, as well as L-shell x-ray production cross sections so obtained, are compared with various theoretical approximations. The Coulomb direct ionization contributions is studied by (i) the relativistic semi-classical approximations (RSCA), (…
The nondipole under-the-barrier dynamics of the electron during strong-field tunneling ionization is investigated, examining the role of the Coulomb field of the atomic core. The common analysis in the strong field approximation is consequently generalised to include the leading light-front non-dipole Coulomb corrections and demonstrates the counter-intuitive impact of the sub-barrier Coulomb field. Despite its attractive nature, the sub-barrier Coulomb field increases the photoelectron nondipole momentum shift along the laser propagation direction, involving a strong dependence on the laser f…
Above 54.4 eV, two-photon double ionization of helium is dominated by a sequential absorption process, producing characteristic behavior in the single and triple differential cross sections. We show that the signature of this process is visible in the nuclear recoil cross section, integrated over all energy sharings of the ejected electrons, even below the threshold for the sequential process. Since nuclear recoil momentum imaging does not require coincident photoelectron measurement, the predicted images present a viable target for future experiments with new short-pulse VUV and soft X-ray so…
Exchange correlation plays an important role in double-ionization of complex atoms by ultrashort laser pulse. In this work, we investigate two-photon double inner-shell electron ionization of neon induced by an attosecond extreme ultraviolent pulse in the framework of the quantum master equation. Our simulations reveal a distinct non-sequential effect via broadened double peaks, as a result of energy sharing between the two ionized electrons. When dissipation is included to show the interplay of coherence and decoherence, the two-photon double-ionization scaling law breaks down. We further stu…
We theoretically study dissociative ionization of H$_2^+$ exposed to strong linearly polarized few-cycle visible, near-infrared and midinfrared laser pulses. We find rich energy-sharing structures in the combined electron and nuclear kinetic energy spectra with features that are a priori at odds with simple energy conservation arguments. We explain the structures as interferences between wave packets released during different optical cycles, and during the same optical cycle, respectively. Both inter- and intracycle interference structures are clearly visible in the joint energy spectra. The s…
We report on a kinematically complete experiment on strong field double ionization of helium using laser pulses with a wavelength of 394\,nm and intensities of $3.5-5.7\times10^{14}\,W/cm^2$. Our experiment reaches the most complete level of detail which previously has only been reached for single photon double ionization. We give an overview over the observables on many levels of integration, starting from the ratio of double to single ionization, the individual electron and ion momentum distributions over joint momentum and energy distributions to fully differential cross sections showing th…
We investigate the role of electron correlation in the two-photon double ionization of helium for ultrashort XUV pulses with durations ranging from a hundred attoseconds to a few femtoseconds. We perform time-dependent ab initio calculations for pulses with mean frequencies in the so-called "sequential" regime (photon energy above 54.4 eV). Electron correlation induced by the time correlation between emission events manifests itself in the angular distribution of the ejected electrons, which strongly depends on the energy sharing between them. We show that for ultrashort pulses two-photon doub…
We study the breakup of $\text{H}_2^+$ exposed to super-intense, femtosecond laser pulses with frequencies greater than that corresponding to the ionization potential. By solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in an extensive field parameter range, it is revealed that highly nonresonant dissociation channels can dominate over ionization. By considering field-dressed Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves in the reference frame following a free electron in the field, we propose a simple physical model that characterizes this dissociation mechanism. The model is used to predict contro…
The collision-ionization mechanism of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) process in IR+XUV two-color laser fields [\PRA \textbf{93}, 043417 (2016)] has been investigated by us recently. Here we extend this work to study the collision-excitation-ionization (CEI) mechanism of NSDI processes in the two-color laser fields with different laser conditions. It is found that the CEI mechanism makes a dominant contribution to the NSDI as the XUV photon energy is smaller than the ionization threshold of the He$^+$ ion, and the momentum spectrum shows complex interference patterns and symmetrical str…
We present the first theoretical treatment of the formation of highly excited neutral H atoms (H$^{*}$) for strongly driven H$_{2}$. This process, with one electron ionizing and one captured in a Rydberg state, was recently reported in an experimental study in Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 102} 113002 (2009). We show that two mechanisms underlie this process: a non-sequential one resembling non-sequential double ionization, and a sequential one resembling double ionization through enhanced ionization. We also predict a new feature, asymmetric energy sharing between H$^{*}$ and H$^{+}$ with increasing i…
When a strong laser pulse induces the ionization of an atom, momentum conservation dictates that the absorbed photons transfer their momentum $p_γ=E_γ/c$ to the electron and its parent ion. Even after 30 years of studying strong-field ionization, the sharing of the photon momentum between the two particles and its underlying mechanism are still under debate in theory. Corresponding experiments are very challenging due to the extremely small photon momentum ($~10^{-4}$ a.u.) and their precision has been too limited, so far, to ultimately resolve the debate. Here, by utilizing a novel experiment…
The dissociative ionization of $H_2^+$ in a linearly polarized, 400 nm laser pulse is simulated by solving a three-particle time-dependent Schrödinger equation in full dimensionality without using any data from quantum chemistry computation. The joint energy spectrum (JES) is computed using a time-dependent surface flux (tSurff) method, the details of which are given. The calculated ground energy is -0.597 atomic units and internuclear distance is 1.997 atomic units if the kinetic energy term of protons is excluded, consistent with the reported precise values from quantum chemistry computation…
We have investigated the energy correlation of the two electrons from nonsequential double ionization of helium atom in 800 nm laser fields at intensities below the recollision threshold by quantum calculations. The circular arcs structure of the correlated electron momentum spectra reveals a resonant double ionization process in which the two electrons transit from doubly excited states into continuum states by simultaneously absorbing and sharing excess energy in integer units of the photon energy. Coulomb repulsion between the two electrons in continuum states is responsible for the dominan…
A kinetic theory model is developed for positron-impact ionization (PII) with neutral, rarefied gases. Particular attention is given to the sharing of available energy between the post-ionization constituents. A simple model for the energy-partition function that qualitatively captures the physics of high-energy and near-threshold ionization is developed for PII, with free parameters that can be used to fit the model to experimental data. By applying the model to the measurements of Kover and Laricchia [1] for positrons in H2, the role of energy-partitioning in PII for positron thermalisation …
The dissociative ionization of $H_2^+$ in linearly polarized, 400 nm laser pulses is simulated by solving a three-particle time-dependent Schrödinger equation in full dimensionality. The joint energy spectra (JES) are computed for $\cos^8$ and flat-top envelopes using the time-dependent surface flux (tSurff) methods. In JES, the energy sharing $n$ photon energies $ω$ of nuclear kinetic energy release (KER) $E_N$ and electronic KER $E_e$ are well represented by $E_N+E_e=nω-U_p+E_0$ for $\cos^8$ pulses, but satisfy $E_N+E_e=nω+E_0$ for flat-top envelope, exposing a deviation of the ponderomotive…
In this work we report ab initio calculations for the $H_2^+$ molecule interacting with ultrashort intense laser pulses. We analyse several observables that can, in principle, be available experimentally, in order to get a deeper understanding of the strong field molecular dynamics. In particular, we will focus our attention to the interplay between electronic and nuclear dynamics and how the two motions are correlated. We have extended the Resolvent Technique to molecules and we have extracted the correlated energy spectra in different regimes of ionization: from the perturbative regime to th…
We have carried out calculations of the triple-differential cross section for one-photon double ionization of molecular hydrogen for a central photon energy of $75$~eV, using a fully {\it ab initio}, nonperturbative approach to solve the time-dependent \Schro equation in prolate spheroidal coordinates. The spatial coordinates $ξ$ and $η$ are discretized in a finite-element discrete-variable representation. The wave packet of the laser-driven two-electron system is propagated in time through an effective short iterative Lanczos method to simulate the double ionization of the hydrogen molecule. …
Total and partial cross sections for breakup of ground rovibronic state of H$_2^+$by photon impact are calculated using the exact nonadiabatic nonrelativistic Hamiltonian without approximation. The converged results span six orders of magnitude. The breakup cross section is divided into dissociative excitation and dissociative ionization. The dissociative excitation channels are divided into contributions from principal quantum numbers 1 through 4. For dissociative ionization the kinetic energy sharing is calculated using a formally exact expression. These results are compared with approximate…
