The dissociative ionization of $H_2^+$ in linearly polarized, 400 nm laser pulses is simulated by solving a three-particle time-dependent Schrödinger equation in full dimensionality. The joint energy spectra (JES) are computed for $\cos^8$ and flat-top envelopes using the time-dependent surface flux (tSurff) methods. In JES, the energy sharing $n$ photon energies $ω$ of nuclear kinetic energy release (KER) $E_N$ and electronic KER $E_e$ are well represented by $E_N+E_e=nω-U_p+E_0$ for $\cos^8$ pulses, but satisfy $E_N+E_e=nω+E_0$ for flat-top envelope, exposing a deviation of the ponderomotive energy $U_p$, which has been observed in experiments, where $E_0$ is the ground energy of $H_2^+$. The analysis of the wavefunction for electrons and protons after the pulse are presented, where we find $U_p$ is absorbed by the Freeman resonances between two excited ungerade states.
The problem of Freeman resonances [R. R. Freeman \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{59}, 1092 (1987)] when strong field ionization is enhanced due to the transient population of excited states during the ionization, is revisited. An intuitive model is put forward which explains the mechanism of the intermediate population of excited states during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization via the under-the-barrier recollision and recombination. The theoretical model is based on perturbative strong-field approximation (SFA), where the sub-barrier bound-continuum-bound pathway is described in the …
Joint electron-ion energy spectra for the dissociative ionization of a model H$_2^+$ in few-cycle, infrared laser pulses are calculated via the numerical ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. A strong, pulse-dependent modulation of the ionization probability for certain values of the protons' kinetic energy (but almost independent of the electron's energy) is observed. With the help of models with frozen ions, this feature---which mistakenly might be attributed to vibrational excitations---is traced back to the transient population of electronically excited states, fol…
We investigate dissociative single and double ionization of HeH+ induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses. By employing a semi-classical model with nuclear trajectories moving on field-dressed surfaces and ionization events treated as stochastical jumps, we identify a strong-field mechanism wherein the molecules dynamically align along the laser polarization axis and stretch towards a critical internuclear distance before getting dissociative ionized. As the tunnel-ionization rate is greater for larger internuclear distance and for aligned samples, ionization is enhanced. The strong dynamic…
The time-dependent surface flux method developed for the description of electronic spectra [L. Tao and A. Scrinzi, New J. Phys. 14, 013021 (2012); A. Scrinzi, New J. Phys. 14, 085008 (2012)] is extended to treat dissociation and dissociative ionization processes of H2+ interacting with strong laser pulses. By dividing the simulation volume into proper spatial regions associated with the individual reaction channels and monitoring the probability flux, the joint energy spectrum for the dissociative ionization process and the energy spectrum for dissociation is obtained. The methodology is illus…
We theoretically study dissociative ionization of H$_2^+$ exposed to strong linearly polarized few-cycle visible, near-infrared and midinfrared laser pulses. We find rich energy-sharing structures in the combined electron and nuclear kinetic energy spectra with features that are a priori at odds with simple energy conservation arguments. We explain the structures as interferences between wave packets released during different optical cycles, and during the same optical cycle, respectively. Both inter- and intracycle interference structures are clearly visible in the joint energy spectra. The s…
We investigate the photoelectron angular emission distributions obtained by strong field dissociative ionization of H$_2$ using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. In case of employing laser light with an ellipticity close to 0.9 and an intensity of 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ W/cm$^2$, we find that the most probable release-time of the electron does not generally coincide with the time when the laser field maximizes. The release-time is affected by the molecular orientation. In addition, we observe that the width of the release-time distribution depends on molecular orientation. We attri…
We present a theoretical study of the dissociative tunneling ionization process. Analytic expressions for the nuclear kinetic energy distribution of the ionization rates are derived. A particularly simple expression for the spectrum is found by using the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation in conjunction with the reflection principle. These spectra are compared to exact non-BO ab initio spectra obtained through model calculations with a quantum mechanical treatment of both the electronic and nuclear degrees freedom. In the regime where the BO approximation is applicable imaging of the BO nucle…
We apply the Monte Carlo Wave Packet (MCWP) approach to investigate the kinetic energy release (KER) spectra of the protons following double ionization in H$_{2}$ when interacting with laser pulses with central wavelengths ranging from the near-IR (800 nm) to the mid-IR (6400 nm) regions and with durations of 3-21 laser cycles. We uncover the physical origins of the peaks in the nuclear KER spectra and ascribe them to mechanisms such as ionization following a resonant dipole transition, charge-resonance-enhanced ionization (CREI) and ionization in the dissociative limit of large internuclear d…
We have implemented three variants of the exterior complex scaling procedure in prolate spheroidal coordinates (PS-ECS) to study the dissociative electron impact ionization-excitation of hydrogen molecule, where the emerging electrons and one of the protons are detected in coincidence for the first time in a recent experiment. In the first variant, designated PSECS-1B, the two target electrons are treated ab initio while the interaction of the incident-scattered electron is taken into account using the first term of the Born series. In the second, PSECS-2BCD, the second Born term is introduced…
We propose a novel mechanism of electron localization and molecular symmetry breaking in dissociative photoionization of the H$_2$ molecule. The Coulomb field of the ejected electron can induce transition of the remaining H$_2^+$ ion from the gerade $^2Σ_g^1(1sσ_g)$ to the ungerade $^2Σ_u^1(2pσ_u)$ electronic state when the nuclei in a bound vibrational state are near the outer turning point. The superposition of this process with a direct transition to vibrational continuum should produce a non-gerade ionic state which results in observed asymmetry in the $p$-H ejection relative to the electr…
We solve the hydrodynamic-ballistic equations of motion for a one-dimensional time-dependent Thomas-Fermi model of Cl_2 exposed to an intense subpicosecond laser field, and observe simultaneous multielectron ionization and molecular dissociation. The fragment kinetic energy defect with respect to the simple Coulomb explosion picture is found to originate in ejected-electron screening of the escaping fragments; its magnitude agrees with that observed in recent experiments.
The dissociative ionization of $H_2^+$ in a linearly polarized, 400 nm laser pulse is simulated by solving a three-particle time-dependent Schrödinger equation in full dimensionality without using any data from quantum chemistry computation. The joint energy spectrum (JES) is computed using a time-dependent surface flux (tSurff) method, the details of which are given. The calculated ground energy is -0.597 atomic units and internuclear distance is 1.997 atomic units if the kinetic energy term of protons is excluded, consistent with the reported precise values from quantum chemistry computation…
Using techniques of complex analysis in an algebraic approach, we solve the wave equation for a two-level atom interacting with a monochromatic light field exactly. A closed-form expression for the quasi-energies is obtained, which shows that the Bloch-Siegert shift is always finite, regardless of whether the original or the shifted level spacing is an integral multiple of the driving frequency, $ω$. We also find that the wave functions, though finite when the original level spacing is an integral multiple of $ω$, become divergent when the intensity-dependent shifted energy spacing is an integ…
We report on the fragmentation of the water molecule by $1$ MeV H$^{+}$, He$^{+}$ and 650 keV N$^{+}$ ion impact. The fragment-ion energy spectra were measured by an electrostatic spectrometer at different observation angles. The obtained double-differential fragmentation cross sections for N$^{+}$ is found to be more than an order of magnitude higher, than that for H$^{+}$. The relative ratios of the fragmentation channels are also different for the three projectiles. Additional fragmentation channels were observed in the spectra for He$^{+}$ and for N$^{+}$ impact, which are missing in the c…
D$_2$ molecules, excited by linearly cross-polarized femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and near-infrared (NIR) light pulses, reveal highly structured D$^+$ ion fragment momenta and angular distributions that originate from two different 4-step dissociative ionization pathways after four photon absorption (1 XUV + 3 NIR). We show that, even for very low dissociation kinetic energy release $\le$~240~meV, specific electronic excitation pathways can be identified and isolated in the final ion momentum distributions. With the aid of {\it ab initio} electronic structure and time-dependent Schröd…
The dissociative ionization of H2+ interacting with intense, femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses is investigated theoretically. This is done by numerical propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a colinear one-dimensional model of H2+, with electronic and nuclear motion treated exactly within the limitations of the model. The joint-energy spectra (JES) are extracted for the fragmented electron and nuclei by means of the t-SURFF method. The dynamic interference effect, which was first observed in one-electron atomic systems, is in the present work observed for H2+, em…
We report measurements on the H$^{+}$ + H$^{+}$ fragmentation channel following direct single-photon double ionization of neutral NH$_{3}$ at 61.5 eV, where the two photoelectrons and two protons are measured in coincidence using 3-D momentum imaging. We identify four dication electronic states that contribute to H$^{+}$ + H$^{+}$ dissociation, based on our multireference configuration-interaction calculations of the dication potential energy surfaces. The extracted branching ratios between these four dication electronic states are presented. Of the four dication electronic states, three disso…
We experimentally demonstrate robust selective excitation and attenuation of atomic Rydberg level populations in sodium vapor (Na I) using intense laser pulses in the strong field limit ($> 10^{12} W/cm^{2}$). The coherent control of the atomic population and related ionization channels is realized for intensities above the over-the-barrier ionization intensity. A qualitative model predicts that this strong field coherent control arises through the manifestation of a Freeman resonance.
Multiphoton ionization of sodium by femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength in the range of laser peak intensities entering over-the-barrier ionization domain is studied. Photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schroedinger equation for three values of the laser intensity from this domain. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al (Phys. Rev. A 2016 93 063426). A partial wave analysis of the spectral peaks related to Freeman resonances has shown that each peak is a …
Multiphoton ionization of sodium by laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength and 57 fs duration is studied in the range of laser peak intensities belonging to over-the-barrier ionization regime. Photoelectron momentum distributions (PMD) and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 063426 (2016)]. The contributions of photoelectrons with different values of the orbital quantum number in the PMD are determined by expanding the photoelectro…
We present a study of multiphoton dissociative ionization from molecules. By solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for H$_2^+$ and projecting the solution onto double continuum scattering states, we observe the correlated electron-nuclear ionization dynamics in detail. We show --- for the first time --- how multiphoton structure prevails as long as the energies of all fragments are accounted for. Our current work provides a new avenue to analyze strong-field fragmentation that leads to a deeper understanding of the correlated molecular dynamics.
The pulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectrum of H$_2$ has been recorded in the vicinity of the dissociative-ionization threshold following three-photon excitation via selected rotational levels of the B $^1Σ_u^+$ ($v=19$) and $\bar{\rm H}$ $^1Σ_g^+$ ($v=11$) intermediate states. The spectra consist of transitions to bound levels of the X$^+$ $^2Σ_g^+$ state of H$_2^+$ with $v^+$ in the range 14-19 and $N^+$ in the range 0-9, of the A$^+$ $^2Σ_u^+$ state with $v^+=0$ and $N^+=0-2$, and of shape resonances corresponding to the X$^+\ (v^+=17,N^+=7)$ and X$^+\ (v^+=18,N^+…
We show the details of the pathway for dissociative ionization process of ground electronic state of aligned D$^{+}_{2}$ due to first ionization of D$_2$ in short ($\thicksim$100 fs) and intense ($4.0\times10^{14}$ W cm$^{-2}$) 480 nm laser pulses. The initial vibrational state of D$^{+}_{2}$ comes from the vertical transformation of the ground state of D$_{2}$. The initial wavepacket in the ground electronic state of D$_{2}^{+}$ is outgoing through dissociation-ionization channel accompanied by a strong coupling between $1s σ_{g}$ and $2p σ_{u}$ electronic states. We show explicitly that the …
Simultaneously, the vibrational nuclear dynamics and full dimensional electronic dynamics of the deuterium molecular ion exposed to the linear polarized intense laser field are studied. The time dependent Schrödinger equation of the aligned D2+ with the electric laser field is solved for the simulation of the complicated dissociative ionization processes and compared with the recent related experimental results. In this work, the R-dependent ionization rate and the enhanced ionization phenomenon beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) are introduced and calculated. The substructure of …
We study the electron-impact induced ionization of O$_{2}$ from threshold to 120 eV using the electron spectroscopy method. Our approach is simple in concept and embodies the ion source with a collision chamber and a mass spectrometer with a quadruple filter as a selector for the product ions. The combination of these two devices makes it possible to unequivocally collect all energetic fragment ions formed in ionization and dissociative processes and to detect them with known efficiency. The ion source allows to vary and tune the electron-impact ionization energy and the target-gas pressure. W…
In this work, we apply the Monte Carlo wave packet method to study the ultrafast nuclear dynamics following inner-shell photoionization of N2 exposed to an ultrashort intense X-ray pulse. The photon energy of the X-ray pulse is large enough to remove a 1s electron from the N atom in N2. The intermediate state in N+2 is highly excited so that autoionization takes place from this state to the dissociative or non-dissociative electronic states of ungerade and gerade symmetries in N++2. The possible vibrational resonances allowed by the non-dissociative states prevents a direct extraction of the n…
The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, lea…
We studied dependence of dissociative ionization in H2 on carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of few-cycle (6fs) near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses. For low-energy channels, we present the first experimental observation of CEP dependence for total dissociation yield and the highest dwgree of asymmetry reported to date (40%). The observed modulations in both asymmetry and total yield could be understood in terms of interference between different n-photon dissociation pathways - n and (n+1) photon channels for asymmetry, n and (n+2) photon channels for yield - as suggested by the general theory of CEP ef…
We present an implementation of a time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) method [R. Anzaki et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 19, 22008 (2017)] with the full configuration interaction expansion for coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in diatomic molecules subject to a strong laser field. In this method, the total wave function is expressed as a superposition of different configurations constructed from time-dependent electronic Slater determinants and time-dependent orthonormal nuclear basis functions. The primitive basis functions of nuclei and electrons are strictly in…
