The progress of a multiple bunches of electrons through several thousand accelerator structures results in a wakefield which if left unchecked will kick successive bunches off the axis of the accelerator and can at the very least dilute the final luminosity of the final colliding beams, or at worst can lead to a BBU (Beam Break Up) instability. In order to damp the wakefields to acceptable levels for travelling wave structures we detune the frequencies of the cells and we couple out the field to four adjacent manifolds. Optimizing the manifold-cell coupling for several hundred cells and changing the bandwidth parameters of the distribution has in previous structures been achieved by a process of trial and error. Here, we report on an optimized Fortran code that has been specifically written with the aim minimizing the sum of the squares of the RMS and standard deviation of the sum wakefield. Sparse matrix techniques are employed to reduce the computational time required for each frequency step. The wakefield is minimized whilst ensuring that no significant local surface heating occurs due to slots cuts into the accelerator cells to couple out the wakefield.

The beam breakup instability of the drive bunch in the structure-based collinear wakefield accel- erator is considered and a stabilizing method is proposed. The method includes using the specially designed beam focusing channel, applying the energy chirp along the electron bunch, and keeping energy chirp constant during the drive bunch deceleration. A stability condition is derived that defines the limit on the accelerating field for the witness bunch.
Plasma wakefield accelerators driven by particle beams are capable of providing accelerating gradient several orders of magnitude higher than currently used radio-frequency technology, which could reduce the length of particle accelerators, with drastic influence on the development of future colliders at TeV energies and the minimization of x-ray free-electron lasers. Since inter-plasma components and distances are among the biggest contributors to the total accelerator length, the design of staged plasma accelerators is one of the most important outstanding questions in order to render this t…
Manifold Damping of Transverse Wakefields in High Phase Advance Traveling Wave Structures and Local Damping of Dipole Wakefields in Standing Wave Accelerators
Beam-driven collinear wakefield accelerators (CWAs) that operate by using slow-wave structures or plasmas hold great promise toward reducing the size of contemporary accelerators. Sustainable acceleration of charged particles to high energies in the CWA relies on using field-generating relativistic electron bunches with a highly asymmetric peak current profile and a large energy chirp. A new approach to obtaining such bunches has been proposed and illustrated with the accelerator design supported by particle tracking simulations. It has been shown that the required particle distribution in the…
The hose instability of the drive beam constitutes a major challenge for the stable operation of plasma wakefield accelerators (PWFAs). In this work, we show that drive beams with a transverse size comparable to the plasma blowout radius generate a wake with a varying focusing along the beam, which leads to a rapid detuning of the slice-betatron oscillations and suppresses the instability. This intrinsic stabilization principle provides an applicable and effective method for the suppression of the hosing of the drive beam and allows for a stable acceleration process.
When a charged particle travels across the vacuum chamber of an accelerator, it induces electromagnetic fields, which are left mainly behind the generating particle. These electromagnetic fields act back on the beam and influence its motion. Such an interaction of the beam with its surro undings results in beam energy losses, alters the shape of the bunches, and shifts the betatron and synchrotron frequencies. At high beam current the fields can even lead to instabilities, thus limiting the performance of the accelerator in terms of beam quality and current intensity. We discuss in this lectur…
X-band accelerator for multi-bunches has been a new way to produce high luminosity and energy efficiency bunches. As the smaller size and multi-bunches, the wakefield is more severe in X-band accelerator, unless some means of strongly suppressing of the transverse wakefield is adopted in the design of the accelerating structure. To calculate the transverse wakefield of the structure, wakefield calculated through the double circuit model has been demonstrated and its application in the structure designed.
We report preliminary studies of a three-channel, rectangular, high gradient dielectric wakefield accelerator element, which, unlike the collinear cylindrical dielectric wakefield device, does not suffer from low transformer ratio and may offer relief from the beam breakup instability. When configured as a resonator (DWR), it can be driven by a series of modest-charge drive bunches. This rectangular 'mode-locked' resonator consists of three channels lined with low-loss dielectric slabs: the central wider channel is the drive bunch channel, whereas two adjacent narrow channels are used to accel…
Recent progress in laser wakefield acceleration has led to the emergence of a new generation of electron and X-ray sources that may have enormous benefits for ultrafast science. These novel sources promise to become indispensable tools for the investigation of structural dynamics on the femtosecond time scale, with spatial resolution on the atomic scale. Here, we demonstrate the use of laser-wakefield-accelerated electron bunches for time-resolved electron diffraction measurements of the structural dynamics of single-crystal silicon nano-membranes pumped by an ultrafast laser pulse. In our pro…
The interaction of intense particle bunches with plasma can give rise to plasma wakes capable of sustaining gigavolt-per-metre electric fields, which are orders of magnitude higher than provided by state-of-the-art radio-frequency technology. Plasma wakefields can, therefore, strongly accelerate charged particles and offer the opportunity to reach higher particle energies with smaller and hence more widely available accelerator facilities. However, the luminosity and brilliance demands of high-energy physics and photon science require particle bunches to be accelerated at repetition rates of t…
Hollow channel plasma wakefield acceleration is a proposed method to provide high acceleration gradients for electrons and positrons alike: a key to future lepton colliders. However, beams which are misaligned from the channel axis induce strong transverse wakefields, deflecting beams and reducing the collider luminosity. This undesirable consequence sets a tight constraint on the alignment accuracy of the beam propagating through the channel. Direct measurements of beam misalignment-induced transverse wakefields are therefore essential for designing mitigation strategies. We present the first…
The one-dimensional wakefield generation equations are solved for increasing levels of non-linearity, to demonstrate how they contribute to the overall behaviour of a non-linear wakefield in a plasma. The effect of laser guiding is also studied as a way to increase the interaction length of a laser wakefield accelerator.
The field of plasma-based particle accelerators has seen tremendous progress over the past decade and experienced significant growth in the number of activities. During this process, the involved scientific community has expanded from traditional university-based research and is now encompassing many large research laboratories worldwide, such as BNL, CERN, DESY, KEK, LBNL and SLAC. As a consequence, there is a strong demand for a consolidated effort in education at the intersection of accelerator, laser and plasma physics. The CERN Accelerator School on Plasma Wake Acceleration has been organ…
Plasma Wakefield Accelerators promise huge acceleration gradients that are three orders of magnitude greater than today's conventional radio frequency (RF) accelerators. These novel accelerators show also the potential of diminishing the size of the future accelerators nearly by the same factor. This review gives brief explanations and the working principles of the Plasma Wakefield Accelerators and shows the recent developments of the field. The current challenges are given and the potential future use of the Plasma Wakefield Accelerators are discussed.
A new electron injection scheme is proposed in sub-relativistic plasma wakefield accelerators. A transverse laser ionizes a dopant gas and ponderomotively accelerates the released electrons in the direction of wake propagation. This process enables electron trapping in the wakefield even for a wakefield potential below the trapping threshold. We study the scheme theoretically and by means of particle-in-cell simulations to demonstrate high-quality beam formation and acceleration with sub-micrometer normalized emittances and sub-percent uncorrelated energy spreads.

Accelerating particles to high energies with a high-gradient wakefield accelerator may require use of multiple stages. Coupling beams from one stage to another can be difficult due to high divergence and non-negligible energy spreads. We review the challenges, technical requirements and currently proposed methods for solving the staging problem.
The self-modulation instability is a key effect that makes possible the usage of nowadays proton beams as drivers for plasma wakefield acceleration. Development of the instability in uniform plasmas and in plasmas with a small density up-step is numerically studied with the focus at nonlinear stages of beam evolution. The step parameters providing the strongest established wakefield are found, and the mechanism of stable bunch train formation is identified.
Drive particle beams in linear or weakly nonlinear regimes of the plasma wakefield accelerator quickly reach a radial equilibrium with the wakefield, which is described in detail for the first time. The equilibrium beam state and self-consistent wakefields are obtained by combining analytical relationships, numerical integration, and first-principle simulations. In the equilibrium state, the beam density is strongly peaked near the axis, the beam radius is constant along the beam, and longitudinal variation of the focusing strength is balanced by varying beam emittance. The transverse momentum…
The characterization of plasma wakefield acceleration experiments using emitted photons from betatron radiation requires numerical models in support of instrumentation of single-shot, double-differential angular-energy spectra. Precision characterization for relevant experiments necessitates covering a wide energy range extending from tens of keV through 10~GeV, with an angular resolution on the order of $100 \;μ\text{rad}$. In this paper, we present a numerical model for betatron radiation from plasma accelerated beams, that are based on integration of Lienard Wiechert (LW) potentials for com…
We investigate the effects of a Stern-Gerlach-type addition to the Lorentz force on electrons in a laser wakefield accelerator. The Stern-Gerlach-type terms are found to generate a family of trajectories describing electrons that surf along the plasma density wave driven by a laser pulse. Such trajectories could lead to an increase in the size of an electron bunch, which may have implications for attempts to exploit such bunches in future free electron lasers.

We discovered a novel effect that can cause witness emittance growth in plasma wakefield accelerators. The effect appears in linear or moderately nonlinear plasma waves. The witness experiences a time-varying focusing force and loses quality during the time required for the drive beam to reach transverse equilibrium with the plasma wave. The higher the witness charge, the lower the emittance growth rate because of additional focusing of the witness by its own wakefield. However, the witness head always degrades, and the boundary between degraded and intact parts gradually propagates backward a…
The acceleration gradients generated in a laser- or beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator are typically three orders of magnitude greater than those produced by a conventional accelerator, and hence plasma accelerators can open a route to a new generation of very compact machines. In addition, plasma-based accelerators can generate beams with unique properties, such as tens of kiloamp peak currents, attosecond bunch duration, ultrahigh brightness and intrinsic particle beam-laser pulse synchronization. In this roadmap we review the status of plasma accelerator research in the UK. We outline…
The energy spread in laser-wakefield accelerators is primarily limited by the energy-chirp introduced during the injection and acceleration processes. Here we propose and demonstrate the use of longitudinal density tailoring to adapt the accelerating fields and reduce the chirp at the end of the accelerator. Experimental data supported by 3D PIC simulations show that broadband electron beams can be converted to quasi-monoenergetic beams of less than 10% energy spread while maintaining a high charge of more than 120 pC. In the linear and quasi-linear regimes of wakefield acceleration, the metho…
Possibility of increase of transformer ratio TR in the case of the profiled sequence of bunches at their injection in a two-beam electron-positron dielectric-resonator collider is considered. Unlike considered earlier the waveguide case, for which TR is equal to the doubled number of bunches of sequence which provide a contribution to the total wakefield, and which is limited by the effect of the group velocity, in a resonator this limitation is absent. For deri-vation in the case of resonator of TR, proportional to the number of bunches, as well as in the waveguide, the ratio of bunch charges…
A new injection scheme using the interference of two coaxial laser pulses is proposed for generating high quality beams in laser wakefield accelerators. In this scheme, a relatively loosely focused laser pulse drives the plasma wakefield, and a tightly focused laser pulse with similar intensity triggers interference ring pattern which creates onion-like multi sheaths in the plasma wakefield. Due to the wavefront curvature change after the focal position of the tightly focused laser, the innermost sheath of the wakefield expands, which slows down the effective phase velocity of the wakefield an…
A laser pulse guided in a curved plasma channel can excite wakefields that steer electrons along an arched trajectory. As the electrons are accelerated along the curved channel, they emit synchrotron radiation. We present simple analytical models and simulations examining laser pulse guiding, wakefield generation, electron steering, and synchrotron emission in curved plasma channels. For experimentally realizable parameters, a ~2 GeV electron emits 0.1 photons per cm with an average photon energy of multiple keV.
