We introduce generalized Husimi functions at the interfaces of dielectric systems. Four different functions can be defined, corresponding to the incident and departing wave on both sides of the interface. These functions allow to identify mechanisms of wave confinement and escape directions in optical microresonators, and give insight into the structure of resonance wave functions. Off resonance, where systematic interference can be neglected, the Husimi functions are related by Snell's law and Fresnel's coefficients.
Phase-space analysis has been widely used in the past for the study of optical resonant systems. While it is usually employed to analyze the far-field behaviour of resonant systems we focus here on its applicability to coupling problems. By looking at the phase-space description of both the resonant mode and the exciting source it is possible to understand the coupling mechanisms as well as to gain insights and approximate the coupling behaviour with reduced computational efforts. In this work we develop the framework for this idea and apply it to a system of an asymmetric dielectric resonator…
In the diffraction of visible light by a dielectric microcylinder packages of evanescent waves always arise. However, a single-wave incidence corresponds to rather small impact of evanescent waves outside the cylinder. In this paper, we theoretically show that a symmetric pair of plane waves impinging a glass microcylinder corresponds to much higher impact of the evanescent waves. Namely, the interference of the evanescent waves with the propagating ones results in the suppression of the electromagnetic field in an area with very small cross section. This area is located in free space at a sub…
We analyze the optical resonances of a dielectric sphere whose surface has been slightly deformed in an arbitrary way. Setting up a perturbation series up to second order, we derive both the frequency shifts and modified linewidths. Our theory is applicable, for example, to freely levitated liquid drops or solid spheres, which are deformed by thermal surface vibrations, centrifugal forces or arbitrary surface waves. A dielectric sphere is effectively an open system whose description requires the introduction of non-Hermitian operators characterized by complex eigenvalues and not normalizable e…
Forces and torques exerted on dielectric disks trapped in a Gaussian standing wave are analyzed theoretically for disks of radius $2~μ\text{m}$ with index of refraction $n=1.45$ and $n=2.0$ as well as disks of radius 200 nm with $n=1.45$. Calculations of the forces and torques were conducted both analytically and numerically using a discrete-dipole approximation method. Besides harmonic terms, third order ro-translational coupling terms in the potential energy can be significant and a necessary consideration when describing the dynamics of disks outside of the Rayleigh limit. The coupling term…
A simple yet effective achiral platform using elliptical nanoholes for chiroptical analysis is demonstrated. Under linearly polarized excitation, an elliptical nanohole in a thin gold film can generate a localized chiral optical field for chiroptical analysis and simultaneously serve as a near-field optical trap to capture dielectric and plasmonic nanospheres. In particular, the trapping potential is enantioselective for dielectric nanospheres, i.e., the hole traps or repels the dielectric nanoparticles depending on the sample chirality. For plasmonic nanospheres, the trapping potential well i…
