The propagation of photon in a dielectric may be described with the help of the scalar and vector potentials of the medium. The main novelty of the paper is that the concept of the vector potential (which is connected with the velocity of the medium) can be extended to relativistic velocities of the medium. The position-dependent photon wave function was used to describe the propagation of the photon. The new concepts of the velocity of photon as particle and the photon mass in the dielectric medium were proposed.
Because of the importance of second harmonic generation in some nonlinear media, in this paper, we investigated induced second harmonic generation in diamond where there is no intrinsic second order susceptibility, X(2). The electric field is proposed to introduce moving susceptibility of the second order and induce second harmonic generation. Then, spatiotemporal (QPM) is applied to optimize the induced second harmonic generation. Numerical results reveals that in this way, the induced second harmonic is found at the frequency of omega (2) = 2 omega(0) + or - Delta omega rather than omega (0)…
This paper extends current knowledge on electromagnetic wave scattering from bounded moving media in several regards. First, it complements the usual dispersion relation of moving media, $ω(θ_\mathbf{k})$ ($θ_\mathbf{k}$: phase velocity direction, associated with the wave vector, $\mathbf{k}$), with the equally important impedance relation, $η(θ_\mathbf{S})$ ($θ_\mathbf{S}$: group velocity direction, associated with the Poynting vector, $\mathbf{S}$). Second, it explains the interluminal-regime phenomenon of double-downstream wave transmission across a stationary interface between a regular me…
We recently reported on the existence of a singular resonance in moving media which arises due to perfect amplitude and phase balance of evanescent waves. We show here that the non-equilibrium vacuum friction (lateral Casimir-Lifshitz force) between moving plates separated by a finite gap is fundamentally dominated by this resonance. Our result is robust to losses and dispersion as well as polarization mixing which occurs in the relativistic limit.
In this paper, we show how the electromagnetic phenomena in moving magnetodielectric media can be emulated using artificial composite structures at rest. In particular, we introduce nonreciprocal periodically loaded transmission lines which support waves obeying the same rules as plane electromagnetic waves in moving media. Because the actual physical structure is at rest, in these transmission lines there are no fundamental limitations on the velocity values, which may take values larger than the speed of light or even complex values (considering complex amplitudes in the time-harmonic regime…
Scattering can rapidly degrade our ability to form an optical image, to the point where only speckle-like patterns can be measured. Truly non-invasive imaging through a strongly scattering obstacle is difficult, and usually reliant on a computationally intensive numerical reconstruction. In this work we show that, by combining the cross-correlations of the measured speckle pattern at different times, it is possible to track a moving object with minimal computational effort and over a large field of view.
In this paper the equations of motion associated with a Lagrangian inspired by relativistic optics in nonuniform moving media are considered. The model describes optical effects in the nonuniform dispersionless moving medium. When using the optical metric restricted to the Minkowski manifold, we have established the Euler-Lagrange equations for geodesics. We have specified the general model to the special case when the refractive index increases along the direction $Z$. The exact analytical solutions of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations have been constructed. Analysis of the solutions…

We presented a new way to examine the principle of relativity of Special Relativity. According to the principle of relativity, the light dragging by moving media and the light propagation in stationary media with moving source and receiver should be two totally equivalent phenomena. We select a vacuum tube with two glass rods at two ends as the optical media. The length of the middle vacuum cell is L and the thicknesses of the glass rods with refractive index n are D1 and D2. The light drag effect of the moving vacuum tube with speed v is a first-order effect, delta t = 2(n-1)(D1+D2)v/c^2, whi…
A system consisting of two slabs with different temperatures can exhibit a non-equilibrium lateral Casimir force on either one of the slabs when Lorentz reciprocity is broken in at least one of the slabs. This system constitutes a photonic heat engine that converts radiative heat into work done by the non-equilibrium lateral Casimir force. Reversely, by sliding two slabs at a sufficiently high relative velocity, heat is pumped from the slab at a lower temperature to the other one at a higher temperature. Hence the system operates as a photonic heat pump. In this work, we study the thermodynami…
An important issue in phenomenological macroscopic electrodynamics of moving media is the definition of the energy and momentum of the electromagnetic field in matter. Rather surprisingly, this topic has demonstrated a remarkable longevity, and the problem of the electromagnetic energy and momentum in matter remained open, despite numerous theoretical and experimental investigations. We overview the definition of the momentum of light in matter and demonstrate that, for the correct understanding of the problem, one needs to carefully distinguish situations when the material medium is modeled e…

Until recently, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals built from parallel metallic wires (wire media) was analyzed in the approximation of isotropic scattering of the electromagnetic wave by a single wire. However, if the wires are thick (kR~1), electromagnetic wave scattering by a wire is anisotropic, i.e., the scattering amplitude depends on the scattering angle. In this work, we derive the equations that describe diffraction of electromagnetic waves and spontaneous emission of charged particles in wire media, and take into account the angular dependence of scattering amplit…
Fizeau demonstrated in 1850 that the speed of light can be modified when it is propagating in moving media. Can we achieve such control of the light speed efficiently with a fast-moving electron media by passing electrical current? Because the strong electromagnetic coupling between the electron and light leads to the collective excitation of plasmon polaritons, it will manifest as the plasmonic Doppler effect. Experimental observation of the plasmonic Doppler effect in electronic system has been challenge because the plasmon propagation speed is much faster than the electron drift velocity in…
