We reconsider the homogeneous Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equations for three-body Coulombic systems with attractive Coulomb interactions and point out that the resonant solutions are contaminated with spurious resonances. The spurious solutions are related to the splitting of the attractive Coulomb potential into short- and long-range parts, which is inherent in the approach, but arbitrary to some extent. The computational approach for solving the Faddeev-Merkuriev equations in total orbital momentum representation is presented. These equations describe a system of three quantum charged particles and are widely used in bound state and scattering calculations. The approach is based on the spline collocation method and exploits intensively the tensor product form of discretized operators and preconditioner, which leads to a drastic economy in both computer resources and time.

Low-energy muon-transfer cross sections and rates in collisions of muonic atoms with hydrogen isotopes are calculated using a six-state close-coupling approximation to coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type equations. The low energy scattering of heavy positively charged particles on hydrogen atoms (H) are investigated by solving the Faddeev equations in configuration space. A resonant value of the pH scattering length, $a=750\pm 5$ a.u., in the pp antisymmetric state was found. This large value indicates the existence of a first excited state with a binding energy B=1.14$\times10^{-9}$ a.u. below the H ground state. Several resonances for non zero angular momenta states are predicted.
