Direct muon transfer in low-energy collisions of the muonic hydrogen H$_μ$ and helium (He$^{++}$) is considered in a three-body quantum-mechanical framework of coordinate-space integro-differential Faddeev-Hahn-type equations within two- and six-state close coupling approximations. The final-state Coulomb interaction is treated without any approximation employing appropriate Coulomb waves in the final state. The present results agree reasonably well with previous semiclassical calculations.
Theory of the isotope shift of the centroid energies of light few-electron atoms is reviewed. Numerical results are presented for the isotope shift of the $2^3P$-$2^3S$ and $2^1S$-$2^3S$ transition energies of $^3$He and $^4$He. By comparing theoretical predictions for the isotope shift with the experimental results, the difference of the squares of the nuclear charge radii of $^3$He and $^4$He, $δR^2$, is determined with high accuracy.
Quantum interference between energetically close states is theoretically investigated, with the state structure being observed via laser spectroscopy. In this work, we focus on hyperfine states of selected hydrogenic muonic isotopes, and on how quantum interference affects the measured Lamb shift. The process of photon excitation and subsequent photon decay is implemented within the framework of nonrelativistic second-order perturbation theory. Due to its experimental interest, calculations are performed for muonic hydrogen, deuterium, and helium-3. We restrict our analysis to the case of phot…
A large-scale full-configuration-interaction calculation based on Dirac-Coulomb-Breit (DCB) Hamiltonian is performed for the $2\,^1S_0$ and $2\,^3S_1$ states of helium. The operators of the normal and specific mass shifts are directly included in the DCB framework to take the finite nuclear mass correction into account. High-accuracy energies and matrix elements involved n (the main quantum number) up to 13 are obtained from one diagonalization of Hamiltonian. The dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated by using the sum rule of intermediate states. And a series of magic wavelengths with…
We provide an up to date summary of the theory contributions to the 2S-2P Lamb shift and the fine structure of the 2P state in the muonic helium ion $(\mathrm{μ^4He})^+$. This summary serves as the basis for the extraction of the alpha particle charge radius from the muonic helium Lamb shift measurements at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. Individual theory contributions needed for a charge radius extraction are compared and compiled into a consistent summary. The influence of the alpha particle charge distribution on the elastic two-photon exchange is studied to take into account pos…
We investigate the finite nuclear mass corrections in the helium atom in order to resolve a significant disagreement between the $2^3S - 2^3P$ and $2^3S - 2^1S$ transition isotope shifts. These two transitions lead to discrepant results for the nuclear charge radii difference between $^4$He and $^3$He. The accurate treatment of the finite nuclear mass effects is quite complicated and requires the use of the quantum field theoretical approach. We derive $α^6 m^2/M$ correction with the help of nonrelativistic QED and dimensional regularization of the three body Coulombic system, and present accu…
We have calculated ac polarizabilities of the $2 \ ^3S$ and $2 \ ^1S$ states of both $^4$He and $^3$He in the range 318 nm to 2.5 $μ$m and determined the magic wavelengths at which these polarizabilities are equal for either isotope. The calculations, only based on available ab initio tables of level energies and Einstein A coefficients, do not require advanced theoretical techniques. The polarizability contribution of the continuum is calculated using a simple extrapolation beyond the ionization limit, yet the results agree to better than 1% with such advanced techniques. Several promising ma…
A low-emittance, high-intensity atomic beam of muonium ($\mathrm{M}=μ^+ + \mathrm{e}^-$) using superfluid helium as muon-to-muonium converter is being developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). This beam could advance laser spectroscopy of muonium and allow the first atomic interferometry experiments for the direct observation of the M gravitational interaction. In this paper, we describe the development of compact detection schemes which resulted in the background-suppressed observation of atomic muonium in vacuum, and can be adapted for cryogenic measurements. Using these setups, we com…
High-precision laser spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen has led to an impressive accuracy in tests of bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED). At the current level of accuracy many systematics have to be studied very carefully and only independent measurements provide the ultimate cross-check. This has been proven recently by measurements in muonic hydrogen, eventually leading to a significant shift of the CODATA recommended values of the proton charge radius and the Rydberg constant. We aim to contribute to tests of fundamental physics by measuring the 1S-2S transition in the He$^+$ ion for th…
Low-energy direct muon transfer from H to Ne$^{10+}$, S$^{16+}$ and Ar$^{18+}$ using two-state close-coupling approximation to Faddeev-Hahn-type equation
We examine the processes of the luminescence in subordinate lines of muonic hydrogen $ μp $ and muonic helium ion $ (μ^4\mathrm{He})^{+} $ in the presence of background source of X-ray emission. It is supposed that a certain amount of muonic atoms existing in the vicinity of astrophysical source reemits absorbed radiation in the subordinate lines. The intensity of luminescence of such a process is proportional to the quantum yield which was calculated for different pumping channels and different models of spectra. It is shown that the luminescent lines of muonic hydrogen and muonic helium ion …
On the basis of quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate nuclear finite size radiative corrections of order $α(Z α)^5$ to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and helium. To construct the interaction potential of particles, which gives the necessary contributions to the energy spectrum, we use the method of projection operators to states with a definite spin. Separate analytic expressions for the contributions of the muon self-energy, the muon vertex operator and the amplitude with spanning photon are obtained. We present also numerical results for these contributions using m…
We have derived the complete formula for the $α^7\,m$ contribution to energy levels of an arbitrary triplet state of the helium atom, performed numerical calculations for the $2^3S$ and $2^3P$ states, and thus improved the theoretical accuracy of ionization energies of these states by more than an order of magnitude. Using the nuclear charge radius extracted from the muonic helium Lamb shift, we obtain the theoretical prediction in excellent agreement with the measured $2^3S - 2^3P$ transition energy [X.~Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 199}, 263002 (2017)]. At the same time we observe sign…
