We investigate the helium atom embedded in a superstrong magnetic field gamma=100-10000 au. All effects due to the finite nuclear mass for vanishing pseudomomentum are taken into account. The influence and the magnitude of the different finite mass effects are analyzed and discussed. Within our full configuration interaction approach calculations are performed for the magnetic quantum numbers M=0,-1,-2,-3, singlet and triplet states, as well as positive and negative z parities. Up to six excited states for each symmetry are studied. With increasing field strength the number of bound states decreases rapidly and we remain with a comparatively small number of bound states for gamma=10^4 au within the symmetries investigated here.
We investigate the electromagnetic transition probabilities for the helium atom embedded in a superstrong magnetic field taking into account the finite nuclear mass. We address the regime γ=100-10000 a.u. studying several excited states for each symmetry, i.e. for the magnetic quantum numbers 0,-1,-2,-3, positive and negative z parity and singlet and triplet symmetry. The oscillator strengths as a function of the magnetic field, and in particular the influence of the finite nuclear mass on the oscillator strengths are shown and analyzed.
The photon polarization operator in superstrong magnetic fields induces the dynamical photon "mass" which leads to screening of Coulomb potential at small distances $z\ll 1/m$, $m$ is the mass of an electron. We demonstrate that this behaviour is qualitatively different from the case of D=2 QED, where the same formula for a polarization operator leads to screening at large distances as well. Because of screening the ground state energy of the hydrogen atom at the magnetic fields $B \gg m^2/e^3$ has the finite value $E_0 = -me^4/2 \ln^2(1/e^6)$.
We obtain the following analytical formula which describes the dependence of the electric potential of a point-like charge on the distance away from it in the direction of an external magnetic field B: Φ(z) = e/|z| [ 1- exp(-\sqrt{6m_e^2}|z|) + exp(-\sqrt{(2/π) e^3 B + 6m_e^2} |z|) ]. The deviation from Coulomb's law becomes essential for B > 3πB_{cr}/α= 3 πm_e^2/e^3 \approx 6 10^{16} G. In such superstrong fields, electrons are ultra-relativistic except those which occupy the lowest Landau level (LLL) and which have the energy epsilon_0^2 = m_e^2 + p_z^2. The energy spectrum on which LLL spli…
We have calculated the total energy of the helium atom in higher excited state. The Coulomb and exchange integrals are evaluated via spherical harmonics. The interaction of the magnetic moments of the electrons between them and also with the magnetic moments of the nucleus was taken into account through a cosine term in the Coulomb potential. The obtained results are in agreement with experimental data.
We report a determination of the antiproton magnetic moment, measured in a three-body system, independent of previous experiments. We present results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium where we have achieved a precision more than a factor of 10 better than our first measurement. A comparison between the experimental results and three-body quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations leads to a new value for the antiproton magnetic moment is -2.7862 (83) nuclear magnetons, which agrees with the magnetic moment of the proton within 2.9 x 10e-3.
We derive the photoionisation cross section in dipole approximation for many-electron atoms and ions for neutron star magnetic field strengths in the range of 10^7 to 10^9 T. Both bound and continuum states are treated in adiabatic approximation in a self-consistent way. Bound states are calculated by solving the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan equations using finite-element and B-spline techniques while the continuum orbital is calculated by direct integration of the Hartree-Fock equations in the mean-field potential of the remaining bound orbitals. We take into account mass and photon density in the n…
Dirac equation for an electron bound by a nucleus in the presence of external axially symmetric field can be solved numerically by using the dual-kinetic-balance conditions imposed on the finite basis set (A-DKB method [Rozenbaum et al, Phys. Rev. A 89, 012514 (2014)]). We present the application of this method to describe helium-like ions exposed to homogeneous external magnetic field. The second-order Zeeman shift and the nuclear magnetic shielding constant are evaluated for the ground state, including the leading contribution of the interelectronic interaction. The A-DKB values are compared…
Recent progress in the spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium has allowed for measuring the separation between components of the hyperfine structure (HFS) of the (37,35) metastable states with an accuracy of 300 MHz, equivalent to a relative accuracy of 3x10^{-5}. The analysis of the uncertainties of the available theoretical results on the antiprotonic helium HFS shows that the accuracy of the value of the dipole magnetic moment of the antiproton (currently known to only 0.3 %) may be improved by up to 2 orders of magnitude by measuring the splitting of appropriately selected components of the H…
We present an investigation on the resonances of a doubly excited helium atom in a strong magnetic field covering the regime B = 0-100 a.u. A full-interaction approach which is based on an anisotropic Gaussian basis set of one-particle functions being nonlinearly optimized for each field strength is employed. Accurate results for a total of 17 resonances below the threshold of consisting of He+ in the N=2 state are reported in this work. This includes states with total magnetic quantum numbers M=0,-1,-2 and even z-parity. The corresponding binding energies are compared to approximate energies …
The structure of the excited $2^{3}$S and $2^{3}$P triplet states of $^{3}$He and $^{4}$He in an applied magnetic field B is studied using different approximations of the atomic Hamiltonian. All optical transitions (line positions and intensities) of the 1083 nm $2^{3}$S-$2^{3}$P transition are computed as a function of B. The effect of metastability exchange collisions between atoms in the ground state and in the $2^{3}$S metastable state is studied, and rate equations are derived, for the populations these states in the general case of an isotopic mixture in an arbitrary field B. It is shown…
We perform metastability exchange optical pumping of helium-3 in a strong magnetic field of 1.5 T. The achieved nuclear polarization, from 80% at 1.33 mbar to 25% at 67 mbar, shows a substantial improvement at high pressures with respect to standard low-field optical pumping. The specific mechanisms of metastability exchange optical pumping at high field are investigated, advantages and intrinsic limitations are discussed. From a practical point of view, our results open the way to alternative technological solutions for polarized helium-3 applications and in particular for magnetic resonance …
Helium atoms have been prepared in the circular $|n=55,\ell=54,m_{\ell}=+54\rangle$ Rydberg state using the crossed electric and magnetic fields method. The atoms, initially travelling in pulsed supersonic beams, were photoexcited from the metastable $1s2s\,^3S_1$ level to the outermost, $m_{\ell}=0$ Rydberg-Stark state with $n=55$ in the presence of a strong electric field and weak perpendicular magnetic field. Following excitation, the electric field was adiabatically switched off causing the atoms to evolve into the circular state with $m_{\ell}=+54$ defined with respect to the magnetic fie…
It is shown that one can stimulate, by using the present-day laboratory magnetic fields, transitions between the $lm$ sub-levels of fast $μHe^+$ ions formating in muon catalyzed fusion. Strong fields also cause the self-ionization from highly excited states of such muonic ions. Both effects are the consequence of the interaction of the bound muon with the oscillating field of the Stark term coupling the center-of-mass and muon motions of the $μHe^+$ ion due to the non-separability of the collective and internal variables in this system. The performed calculations show a possibility to drive th…
We report on the observation of time-resolved quantum beats in the helium fluorescence from the transition 1s3p -> 1s2s, where the initial state is excited by XUV free-electron laser radiation. The quantum beats originate from the Zeeman splitting of the magnetic substates due to an external magnetic field. We perform a systematic study of this effect and discuss the possibilities of studying this phenomenon in the XUV and x-ray regime.
We calculate the atomic structure of hydrogen and helium, atoms and molecules in an intense magnetic field, analytically and numerically with a judiciously chosen basis.
We present a method to measure the binary diffusion coefficient of mercury atoms in a gas at room temperature and low pressure. It is based on the measurement of the longitudinal spin relaxation of optically pumped mercury-199 atoms in a magnetic field gradient. We provide a consistent set of diffusion coefficients for helium-3, helium-4, argon, krypton, xenon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and air.
A non-relativistic classification of charged molecular hydrogenic, helium and mixed helium-hydrogenic chains with one or two electrons which can exist in a strong magnetic field $B \lesssim 10^{16} $G is given. It is shown that for both $1e-2e$ cases at the strongest studied magnetic fields the longest hydrogenic chain contains at most five protons indicating to the existence of the $\rm{H}_5^{4+}$ and $\rm{H}_5^{3+}$ ions, respectively. In the case of the helium chains the longest chains can exist at the strongest studied magnetic fields with three and four $\al-$particles for $1e-2e$ cases, …
We have trapped large numbers of copper and silver atoms using buffer gas cooling. Up to 3x10^12 copper atoms and 4x10^13 silver atoms are trapped. Lifetimes are as long as 5 s, limited by collisions with the buffer gas. Ratios of elastic to inelastic collision rates with He are >~ 10^6, suggesting copper and silver are favorable for use in ultracold applications. The temperature dependence of the silver-helium-3 collision rate varies as T^5.8. We find that this temperature dependence is inconsistent with the behavior predicted for relaxation arising from the spin-rotation interaction, and con…
Antiprotonic helium, a neutral exotic three-body system consisting of a helium nucleus, an electron and an antiproton, is being studied at the Antiproton Decelerator of CERN by the ASAUCSA collaboration. Using laser spectroscopy of the energy levels of the antiproton in this system and comparison to theory, a value of the antiproton-to-electron mass ratio with an error of 3 ppb could be obtained. This result agrees with the most precise measurement of the value of the proton and allows us to extract a limit of the equality of the proton and antiproton charge and mass of 2 ppb. Using microwave …
We present extensive and accurate calculations for the excited state spectrum of spin-polarized neutral helium in a range of magnetic field strengths up to $10^{12}$ G. Of considerable interest to models of magnetic white dwarf stellar atmospheres, we also present results for the dipole strengths of the low lying transitions among these states. Our methods rely on a systematically saturated basis set approach to solving the Hartree--Fock self-consistent field equations, combined with an ``exact'' stochastic method to estimate the residual basis set truncation error and electron correlation eff…
The energy levels of hydrogen and helium atoms in strong magnetic fields are calculated in this study. The current work contains estimates of the binding energies of the first few low-lying states of these systems that are improvements upon previous estimates. The methodology involves computing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the generalized two-dimensional Hartree-Fock partial differential equations for these one- and two-electron systems in a self-consistent manner. The method described herein is applicable to calculations of atomic structure in magnetic fields of arbitrary strength as i…
The electronic structure of the helium atom in the magnetic field regime B=0-100a.u. is investigated, using a full configuration interaction approach which is based on a nonlinearly optimized anisotropic Gaussian basis set of one-particle functions. The corresponding generalized eigenvalue problem is solved for the magnetic quantum number M=-1 and for both even and odd z-parity as well as singlet and triplet spin symmetry. Accurate total electronic energies of the ground state and the first four excitations in each subspace as well as their one-electron ionization energies are presented as a f…
A spectroscopic study of Rydberg states of helium ($n$ = 30 and 45) in magnetic, electric and combined magnetic and electric fields with arbitrary relative orientations of the field vectors is presented. The emphasis is on two special cases where (i) the diamagnetic term is negligible and both paramagnetic Zeeman and Stark effects are linear ($n$ = 30, $B \leq$ 120 mT and $F$ = 0 - 78 V/cm ), and (ii) the diamagnetic term is dominant and the Stark effect is linear ($n$ = 45, $B$ = 277 mT and $F$ = 0 - 8 V/cm). Both cases correspond to regimes where the interactions induced by the electric and …
A study of gravitational properties of matter presents a fundamental interest. The possibility of investigation of quantum gravitational states of matter by the example of helium atom is shown. The capability of the existence of helium quantum states in the gravitational field of a cold neutron star is examined. Observation of such states is done with the help of rotating neutron star's magnetic field. Periodically changing magnetic field induces transitions between gravitational states of helium atom and leads to the appearance of gravitational transitions' spectral lines in gigahertz frequen…
We investigate the electronic structure of the helium atom in a magnetic field b etween B=0 and B=100a.u. The atom is treated as a nonrelativistic system with two interactin g electrons and a fixed nucleus. Scaling laws are provided connecting the fixed-nucleus Hamiltonia n to the one for the case of finite nuclear mass. Respecting the symmetries of the electronic Ham iltonian in the presence of a magnetic field, we represent this Hamiltonian as a matrix with res pect to a two-particle basis composed of one-particle states of a Gaussian basis set. The corresponding generalized eigenvalue probl…
We have experimentally studied the magnetic-field dependence of the decay of a Bose-Einstein condensate of metastable 4He atoms confined in an optical dipole trap, for atoms in the m=+1 and m=-1 magnetic substates, and up to 450 G. Our measurements confirm long-standing calculations of the two-body loss rate coefficient that show an increase above 50 G. We demonstrate that for m=-1 atoms, decay is due to three-body recombination only, with a three-body loss rate coefficient of 6.5(0.4)(0.6)10^(-27)cm^6s^(-1), which is interesting in the context of universal few-body theory. We have also search…
We present measurements of the Faraday and the Cotton-Mouton effects of helium gas at $λ=~1064$\,nm. Our apparatus is based on an up-to-date resonant optical cavity coupled to longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields. This cavity increases the signal to be measured by more than a factor of 270\,000 compared to the one acquired after a single path of light in the magnetic field region. We have reached a precision of a few percent both for Faraday effect and Cotton-Mouton effect. Our measurements give for the first time the experimental value of the Faraday effect at $λ$=\,1064\,nm. This valu…
The Lande g factor describes the response of an atomic energy level to an external perturbation by a uniform and constant magnetic field. In the case of many-electron systems, the leading term is given by the interaction mu_B*(L+2S.B), where L and S are the orbital and spin angular momentum operators, respectively, summed over all electrons. For helium, a long-standing experimental-theoretical discrepancy for P states motivates a reevaluation of the higher-order terms which follow from relativistic quantum theory and quantum electrodynamics (QED). The tensor structure of relativistic correctio…
We demonstrate a simple scheme to reach Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of metastable triplet helium atoms using a single beam optical dipole trap with moderate power of less than 3 W. Our scheme is based on RF-induced evaporative cooling in a quadrupole magnetic trap and transfer to a single beam optical dipole trap that is located below the magnetic trap center. We transfer 1x10^6 atoms into the optical dipole trap, with an initial temperature of 14 μK, and observe efficient forced evaporative cooling both in a hybrid trap, in which the quadrupole magnetic trap operates just below the levit…
This paper describes measurements of the hyperfine structure of two antiprotonic atoms that are planned at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN. The first part deals with antiprotonic helium, a three-body system of alpha-particle, antiproton and electron that was previously studied at LEAR. A measurement will test existing three-body calculations and may - through comparison with these theories - determine the magnetic moment of the antiproton more precisely than currently available, thus providing a test of CPT invariance. The second system, antihydrogen, consisting of an antiproton and a …
