We analyze the reflection and transmission coefficients calculated from transfer matrix simulations on finite lenghts of electromagnetic metamaterials, to determine the effective permittivity and permeability. We present a solitary wave solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation for dispersive permittivity and permeability using a scaling transformation and coupled amplitude-phase formulation. We have considered the third-order dispersion effect (TOD) into our model and show that soliton shift may be suppressed in a negative index material by a judicious choice of the TOD and self-steepening parameter.

We have made measurements of microwave transmission over the 12 - 18 GHz range and through a simple metamaterial exhibiting a negative index of refraction. The metamaterial consisted of an array of wires cladded in dielectric embedded in a magnetic ferrite. The ferrite replaced the cut-ring structure usually used to create the negative permeability.
