We study electromagnetic wave propagation in mediums in which the effective relative permittivity and the effective relative permeability are allowed to take any value in the upper half of the complex plane. A general condition is derived for the phase velocity to be oppositely directed to the power flow. That extends the recently studied case of propagation in mediums for which the relative permittivity and relative permeability are both simultaneously negative, to include dissipation as well. An illustrative case study demonstrates that in general the spectrum divides into five distinct regions.

Transparent Negative Index of Refraction Metamaterial Using a Wire Array in a Magnetic Host

We have made measurements of microwave transmission over the 12 - 18 GHz range and through a simple metamaterial exhibiting a negative index of refraction. Negative optical refractive index resulting from a moving regular medium

The optical refractive index of a moving regular medium is calculated by using the Lorentz transformation in this note. It is shown that in some velocity region of medium moving relative to the initial frame K, the moving medium may possess a negative index of refraction measured by the observer fixed at the frame of reference K.

On metallic gratings coated conformally with isotropic negative-phase-velocity materials

Application of the differential method (also called the C method) to plane-wave diffraction by a perfectly conducting, sinusoidally corrugated metallic grating coated with a linear, homogeneous, isotropic, lossless dielectric-magnetic material shows that coating materials with negative index of refraction may deliver enhanced maximum nonspecular reflection efficiencies in comparison to coating materials with positive index of refraction.

Left-handed Band in an Electromagnetic Metamaterial Inducedby Sub-wavelength Multiple Scattering

Due to the deep sub-wavelength unit cell in metamaterials, the quasi-static approximation is usually employed to describe the propagation. By making pairs of resonators, we highlight that multiple scattering also occurs at this scale and results in the existence of a dipolar resonance, which leads to a negative index of refraction when we consider several resonators. We experimentally verify the possibility of obtaining a negative index of refraction in periodic metamaterials in two different ways, and eventually demonstrates a superlensing effect in both cases.

Refractive index of a transparent liquid measured with a concave mirror

This paper describes the spherical concave mirror method for measuring the index of refraction of transparent liquids. We derived the refractive index equation using Snell's law and the small-angle approximation. We also verified the validity of this method using the traditional spherical mirror and thin-lens Gaussian equations.
