Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is designing a coupled cavity linac (CCL) for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) being built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of the design process, a proto-type, Hot Model, consisting of two segments of the SNS CCL was manufactured and installed at LANL. An RF source was applied to the Hot Model to determine the success of the cavity design, the effectiveness of the control algorithms and cooling systems, and the validity of the Resonance Control Cooling System (RCCS) model used during the Hot Model design. From a system controls perspective, an overview of the hot model, a description of the RCCS, and the pertinent data from the RF tests will be presented.
Vertical vibration of linac components (accelerating structures, girders and quadrupoles) in the NLC has been studied experimentally and analytically. Effects such as structural resonances and vibration caused by cooling water both in accelerating structures and quadrupoles have been considered. Experimental data has been compared with analytical predictions and simulations using ANSYS. A design, incorporating the proper decoupling of structure vibrations from the linac quadrupoles, is being pursued.
A 162.5 MHz, 2.1 MeV Radio Frequency Quadruples (RFQ) structure is being designed for the Injector Scheme II of China Accelerator Driver System (CADS) driver linac. The RFQ will operate at continuous wave (CW) mode as required. For the CW normal conducting machine, the heat management will be one of the most important issues, since the temperature fluctuation may cause cavity deformation and leading to the resonant frequency shift. Therefor a detailed multi-physics analysis is necessary to ensure that the cavity can be stably worked at the required power level. The multi-physics analysis proce…
As the pre-injector of the LHC injector chain, the proton linac at CERN is required to provide a high-intensity (180mA) beam to the Proton Synchrotron Booster. The results of measurements at this intensity will be presented. Furthermore, the linac is now equipped with bunch shape monitors from INR, Moscow, which have allowed the comparison of the Alvarez tank RF settings with simulations.
A muon collider as well as a neutrino factory requires a large number of muons with a kinetic energy of 50GeV or more. Muon survival demands a high gradient linac. The large transverse and longitudinal emittance of the muon beam coming from a muon cooling system implies the need for a large acceptance, acceleration system. These two requirements point clearly to a linac based on superconducting technology. The design of a 2GeV Superconducting muon Linac based on computer programs developed at LANL will be presented. The design is based on the technology available today or components that will …
A single gap, 352 MHz superconducting reentrant cavity for 5-100 MeV beams has been designed and it is presently under construction. This development is being done in the framework of a 30 mA proton linac project for nuclear waste transmutation. Mechanical, cryogenic and rf design characteristics of such cavities will be described.
The continue wave (CW) high current proton linac has wide applications as the front end of the high power proton machines. The low energy part is the most difficult one and there is no widely accepted solution yet. Based on the analysis of the focusing properties of the CW low energy proton linac, a 10 MeV low energy normal conducting proton linac based on equidistant seven-gap Cross-bar H-type (CH) cavities is proposed. The linac is composed of ten 7-gap CH cavities and the transverse focusing is maintained by the quadrupole doublets located between cavities. The total length of the linac is …
A new experimental area designed to develop, test and verify muon ionization cooling apparatus using the 400-MeV Fermilab Linac proton beam has been fully installed and is presently being commissioned. Initially, this area was used for cryogenic tests of liquid-hydrogen absorbers for the MUCOOL R&D program and, now, for high-power beam tests of absorbers, high-gradient rf cavities in the presence of magnetic fields (including gas-filled cavities), and other prototype muon-cooling apparatus. The experimental scenarios being developed for muon facilities involve collection, capture, and cooling …
Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction meth…
In view of a possible evolution of the CERN accelerator complex towards higher proton intensities, a 2.2 GeV H- linac with 4 MW beam power has been designed, for use in connection with an accumulator and compressor ring as proton driver of a muon-based Neutrino Factory. The high-energy part of this linac can use most of the RF equipment (superconducting cavities and klystrons) from the LEP collider after its decommissioning at the end of 2000. Recent results concerning low-beta superconducting cavities are presented, and the main characteristics of the linac design are described. The complete …
LINAC 4 is a normal conducting H- linac proposed at CERN to provide a higher proton flux to the CERN accelerator chain. It should replace the existing LINAC 2 as injector to the Proton Synchrotron Booster and can also operate in the future as the front end of the SPL, a 3.5 GeV Superconductingg Proton Linac. LINAC 4 consists of a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole, a chopper line, a Drift Tube Linac (DTL) and a Cell Coupled DTL all operating at 352 MHz and finally a Side Coupled Linac at 704 MHz. Beam dynamics was studied and optimized performing end-to-end simulations. This paper presents statistical…
In a long-term planning for neutrino experiments in China, a medium baseline neutrino beam is proposed which uses a CW superconducting linac of 15 MW in beam power as the proton driver. The linac will be based on the technologies which are under development by the China-ADS project, but with much weaker requirement on reliability. It is composed of a 3.2-MeV normal conducting RFQ and 5 different types of superconducting cavities. The nominal design energy and current are 1.5 GeV and 10 mA, respectively. The general considerations and preliminary results on the physics design will be presented …
The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) was formed in late 2011 to address important and necessary upgrades to the Proton Source machines (Injector line, Linac and Booster). The goal is to increase the proton flux by doubling the Booster beam cycle rate while maintaining the same intensity per cycle, the same uptime, and the same residual activation in the enclosure. For the Linac, the main focus within PIP is to address reliability. One of the main tasks is to replace the present hard-tube modulator used on the 200 MHz RF system. Plans to replace this high power system with a Marx-topology…
During 1999, four 700-MHz, medium-beta (b = 0.64), superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) cavities for a high-intensity proton linac project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) were manufactured by industry. The SCRF cavities were designed by a LANL team in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, and manufactured at a CERCA plant in Romans, France. The cavities were made of 4-mm-thick, solid niobium sheets with a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) greater than 250. These niobium sheets were supplied by Wah Chang (USA), Heraeus AG (Germany), and Tokyo Denkai (Japan). The SCRF cavities were shipped to L…
Spallation source dedicated for neutron scattering experiments, as well as multi-purpose facilities serving several applications call for pulsed mode operation of a high intensity proton linac. There is general agreement on the superconducting technology for the high-energy part, which offers some advantages, like higher gradient capabilities or operational costs reduction, as compared to room-temperatures accelerating structures. This mode of operation however could spoil the energy stability of the proton beam and needs thus to be carefully studied. First, transient beam-loading effects, ari…
The accelerator for the APT Project is a 100 mA CW proton linac with an output energy of 1030 MeV. A High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) conveys the beam to a raster expander, that provides a large rectangular distribution at a target/blanket (T/B) assembly. Spallation neutrons generated by the proton beam in the T/B reacts with Helium-3 to produce tritium. The design of the APT linac is an integrated normal-conducting (NC)/superconducting (SC) proton linac; the machine architecture has been discussed elsewhere [1]. The NC linac consists of a 75 keV injector, a 6.7-MeV 350-MHz RFQ (radio frequen…
A Damped Detuned Structure (DDS) for CLIC main linac has been proposed as an alternative to the present baseline design which is based on heavy damping. A first prototype, CLIC_DDS_A, for high power tests has been already designed and is under construction. It is also foreseen to design a further prototype, CLIC_DDS_B, to test both the wakefield suppression and high power performances. Wakefield calculations for DDS are, in the early design stage, based on single infinitely periodic cells. Though cell-to-cell interaction is taken into account to calculate the wakefields, it is important to stu…
The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory aims to demonstrate $\approx$ 10% ionization cooling of a muon beam by its interaction with low-Z absorber materials followed by restoration of longitudinal momentum in RF linacs. MICE Step IV, including the first LH2 or LiH absorber cell sandwiched between two particle tracking spectrometers, is the collaboration's near-term goal. Two large superconducting spectrometer solenoids and one focus coil solenoid will provide a magnetic field of $\approx$4 T in the tracker and absorber-cell volumes. The status of the…
The present status of suggested linac-ring type ep and gamma-p colliders is reviewed. The main parameters of these machines as well as e-nucleus and gamma-nucleus colliders are considered. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities may be achieved with a reasonable improvement of proton and electron beam parameters.
Additive manufacturing (or "3D printing") has become a powerful tool for rapid prototyping and manufacturing of complex geometries. As technology is evolving, the quality and accuracy of parts manufactured this way is ever improving. Especially interesting for the world of particle accelerators is the process of 3D printing of stainless steel (and copper) parts. We present the first fully functional IH-type drift tube structure manufactured by metal 3D printing. A 433 MHz prototype cavity has been constructed to act as a proof-of-concept for the technology. The cavity is designed to be UHV cap…
Significant transient beam loading effects were observed during beam commissioning tests of prototype II of the injector for the Accelerator Driven Sub-critical (ADS) system, which took place at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, between October and December 2014. During these tests experiments were performed with CW operation of the cavities with pulsed beam current, and the system was configured to make use of a prototype digital low level radio frequency (LLRF) controller. The system was originally operated in pulsed mode with a simple PID feedback control algorit…
Fermilab has developed a novel concept for an industrial electron linac using Nb3Sn coating technology and conduction cooling. These conduction-cooled linacs can generate electron beam energies up to 10 MeV in continuous-wave operation and reach higher power (>=1 MW) by combing several modules. Compact and light enough to mount on mobile platforms, our machine is anticipated to enable new in-situ environmental remediation applications such as waste-water treatment for urban areas, X-ray medical device sterilization, and innovative pavement applications. We highlight a few aspects of a 1 MW des…
As a part of the ongoing XIIth plan project titled "R&D activities for high energy proton linac based spallation neutron source", the work on physics design of various subsystems of the injector linac and accumulator ring has been taken up at RRCAT, Indore. For the 1 GeV H- injector linac, physics design studies of individual systems have been completed, and the end to end beam dynamics simulation studies have been performed to ensure that the stringent beam dynamics criteria are satisfied for the optimized lattice. Physics design studies to optimize the linear lattice of the accumulator ring …
The cw CCL being designed for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) project accelerates protons from 96MeV to 211MeV. It consists of 99 segments each containing up to seven accelerating cavities. Segments are coupled by intersegment coupling cavities and grouped into supermodules. The design method needs to address not only basic cavity sizing for a given coupling and pi/2 mode frequency, but also the effects of high power densities on the cavity frequency, mechanical stresses, and the structure's stop band during operation. On the APT project, 3-D RF (Ansoft Corp.'s HFSS) and coupled RF…
A dedicated clinical synchrotron facility for cancer therapy using energetic proton and ion beams (C, He and O) has been designed at GSI for the Radiologische Universitaetsklinik at Heidelberg, Germany. The design of the injector linac is presented. Suitable ion sources are discussed and results of ion source test measurements are reported. The LEBT allows for switching between two ion sources. A short RFQ accelerates the ions from 8 keV/u to 400 keV/u. It is followed by a very compact beam matching section and a 3.8 m long IH-type drift tube linac for the acceleration to 7 MeV/u. Both rf stru…
We propose an innovative linear accelerating structure, particularly suited for hadrontherapy applications. Its two main features are compactness and good power efficiency at low beam velocities: the first is achieved through a high working frequency and a consequent high accelerating gradient, the second is obtained by coupling several H-mode cavities together. The structure is called CLUSTER, which stands for "Coupled-cavity Linac USing Transverse Electric Radial field". In order to compare the performance of this structure with other hadrontherapy linac designs involving high frequencies, a…
Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. First stage of the Project-X consists of superconducting linac which will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode to accelerate the beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The operation at CW mode puts high tolerances on the beam line components, particularly on radiofrequency (RF) cavity. The failure of beam line elements at low energy is very critical as it results in mis-match of the beam with the following sections due to different beam parameters than designed parameter. It makes the beam unstable which causes emit…
In the last ten years the use of proton beams in radiation therapy has become a clinical tool for treatment of deep-seated tumours. LIBO is a RF compact and low cost proton linear accelerator (SCL type) for hadrontherapy. It is conceived by TERA Foundation as a 3 GHz Linac Booster, to be mounted downstream of an existing cyclotron in order to boost the energy of the proton beam up to 200 MeV, needed for deep treatment (~25 cm) in the human body. With this solution it is possible to transform a low energy commercial cyclotron, normally used for eye melanoma therapy, isotope production and nucle…
A SASE FEL facility was first proposed in Feasibility Report of the TAC (Turkish Accelerator Center) project in 2000. Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the project was completed in 2005. Technical Design Report (TDR) studies of TAC were started in 2006 in frame of an inter universities project with support of State Planning Organization (SPO) of Turkey. Main goal of the SASE FEL proposal is to cover VUV and soft X-rays region of the spectrum besides IR-FEL, Bremsstrahlung and Synchrotron Radiation proposals of TAC. Up to now, optimization studies based on a special RF linac or an Energy Recove…
A beam dynamics design of 352.2 MHz Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) of Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) project which accelerates continuous wave (CW) proton beam with 30 mA current from 50 keV to 3 MeV kinetic energy has been performed in this study. Also, it includes error analysis of the RFQ in which some fluctuations have been introduced to input beam parameters to see how the output beam parameters are affected, two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic structural design of the RFQ to obtain optimum cavity paramaters that agree with the ones of the beam dynamics. …
The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIPII) is a superconducting linear accelerator being built at Fermilab that will provide 800 MeV proton beams for neutrino production. The Linac requires cooling at 80 K, 5 K, and 2 K temperatures, which will be provided by cryogenic helium produced by a Helium Cryoplant and distributed by a Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS). Based primarily on the Linac heat load requirements at each temperature and the allowable pressure drop, we have made a preliminary thermodynamic design of the CDS. The design also incorporates special requirements such as controlled and …
For proton linear accelerators used in applications such as accelerator-driven systems, due to the nature of the operation, it is essential for the beam failure rate to be several orders of magnitude lower than usual performance of similar accelerators. A fault-tolerant mechanism should be mandatorily imposed in order to maintain short recovery time, high uptime and extremely low frequency of beam loss. This paper proposes an innovative and challenging way for compensation and rematch of cavity failure using fast electronic devices and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) instead of embedded…
The normal conducting Annular Coupled Structure (ACS) is applied for 190-400 MeV part of high intensity proton linac for the J-PARC. The ACS operating frequency is 972 MHz. The J-PARC ACS is strongly based on the results of previous investigations, especially results of Japan Hadron Project (JHP) research program in KEK. However, the design was revised and optimized to meet the requirements of reliability, operation efficiency and cost reduction. The cells shape of accelerating cells was optimized in total energy range to have high shunt impedance value together with the careful matching with …

Project-X is a leading candidate of the next major accelerator construction project at Fermilab. The mission need of Project-X is to establish an intensity frontier for particle physics research, or more precisely, to build a multi-MW proton source for neutrino and other particle studies. Coupled with an upgraded Main Injector (MI) and Recycler, an 8 GeV superconducting RF (SRF) H-minus linac meets this need [1]. However, a more cost effective approach would be a hybrid design, namely, a combination of a 2 GeV SRF linac and an 8 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) in lieu of an 8 GeV SRF linac…

The accelerator systems are designed to deliver a 695 ns proton-pulse onto a mercury target at a 60-Hz repetition rate and an average power of 2-MW. Neutron moderators that will convert the spallation neutrons into slow neutrons for material science re…
The China Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (CADS) is a high intensity proton facility to dispose of nuclear waste and generate electric power. CADS is based on 1.5GeV, 10mA CW superconducting (SC) linac as a driver. The high-energy section of the linac is compose of two families of SC elliptical cavities which are designed for the geometrical beta 0.63 and 0.82. In this paper, the 650 MHz \b{eta}=0.63 SC elliptical cavity was studied including cavity optimization, multipacting, high order modes (HOMs) and generator RF power calculation. Keywords: high current, medium beta, ADS, supercond…
RF power coupler is a key component of the superconducting accelerating system in Chinese ADS proton linac injector I, which is used to transmit 15kW RF power from the power source to the superconducting HWR cavity. According to the requirement of working frequency, power level, transmission capability and cooling condition, the physics design of coupler has been finished, which includes RF structure optimization, thermal simulation, thermal stress analysis and so on. Based on this design, the prototype of HWR coupler has been fabricated, and then has passed the high power test successfully.
The 40-year-old Fermilab Proton Source machines, constituted by the Pre-Injector, Linac and the synchrotron Booster, have been the workhorse of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). During this time, the High Energy Physics Program has demanded an increase in proton throughput, especially during the past decade with the beginning of the neutrino program at Fermilab. In order to achieve a successful program, major upgrades and changes were made in Booster. Once again, the Proton Source has been charged to double their beam throughput, while maintain the present residual activati…
A conceptual design is presented of a novel ERL facility for the development and application of the energy recovery technique to linear electron accelerators in the multi-turn, large current and large energy regime. The main characteristics of the powerful energy recovery linac experiment facility (PERLE) are derived from the design of the Large Hadron electron Collider, an electron beam upgrade under study for the LHC, for which it would be the key demonstrator. PERLE is thus projected as a facility to investigate efficient, high current (> 10 mA) ERL operation with three re-circulation passa…
SPIRAL2 is a superconducting accelerator for protons, deuterons and heavy ions delivering a maximum beam power of 200 kW at 40 MeV (for deuteron beams). 26 superconducting quarter wave cavities are operated at 4.4 K, plunged in a liquid helium bath with a drastic phase separator pressure control. Previous years have seen the development of advanced process control for cryogenics allowing to cope with high heat load dynamics thanks to an automatic heat dissipation compensation and a model based control. The latter is based on models, using the Simcryogenics library, optimized and linearised in …
It is proposed to place the arcs of an SLC-type facility inside the tunnel of a Future Circular Collider (FCC). Accelerated by a linear accelerator (linac), electron and positron beams would traverse the bending arcs in opposite directions and collide at centre-of-mass energies considerably exceeding those attainable at circular $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders. The proposed SLC-type facility would have the same luminosity as a conventional two-linac $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Using an optical free-electron laser, the facility could be converted into a $γγ$ collider. A superconducting L-band linac at the pr…
Compact, reliable and little consuming accelerators are required for the treatment of tumours with ions. TERA proposes the "cyclinac", composed of a high-frequency, fast-cycling linac which boosts the energy of the particles previously accelerated in a cyclotron. The dimensions of the linac can be reduced if high gradients are used. TERA initiated a high-gradient test program to understand the operational limit of such structures. The program foresees the design, prototyping and high-power test of several high-gradient structures operating at 3 and 5.7 GHz. The high-power tests of the 3 GHz si…
Main parameters of linac-ring type $phi$ factory and 1-5 GeV energy proton synchrotron proposed in the framework of the Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) Project are discussed
