We consider space-charge dominated beam transport systems, where space-charge forces are the same order as external focusing forces and dynamics of the corresponding emittance growth. We consider the coherent modes of oscillations and coherent instabilities both in the different nonlinear envelope models and in initial collective dynamics picture described by Vlasov system. Our calculations are based on variation approach and multiresolution in the base of high-localized generalized coherent states/wavelets. We control contributions to dynamical processes from underlying multiscales via nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes expansions in the base of compactly supported wavelet and wavelet packets bases.
We present the application of variational-wavelet analysis to numerical/analytical calculations of Wigner functions in (nonlinear) quasiclassical beam dynamics problems. (Naive) deformation quantization and multiresolution representations are the key points.
We present the applications of variational--wavelet approach for computing multiresolution/multiscale representation for solution of some approximations of Vlasov-Maxwell equations.

We present applications of variational -- wavelet approach to three different models of nonlinear beam motions with underlying collective behaviour: Vlasov-Maxwell-Poisson systems, envelope dynamics, beam-beam model. We have the representation for dynamical variables as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion via high-localized nonlinear eigenmodes in the base of compactly supported wavelet bases. Numerical modelling demonstrates formation of coherent structures and stable patterns.
We present applications of variational -- wavelet approach to different forms of nonlinear (rational) rms envelope equations. We have the representation for beam bunch oscillations as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion in the base of compactly supported wavelet bases.
We consider modeling for strong-strong beam-beam interactions beyond preceding linearized/perturbative methods such as soft gaussian approximation or FMM (HFMM) etc. In our approach discrete coherent modes, discovered before, and possible incoherent oscillations appear as a result of multiresolution/multiscale fast convergent decomposition in the bases of high-localized exact nonlinear modes represented by wavelets or wavelet packets functions. The constructed solutions represent the full multiscale spectrum in all internal hidden scales from slow to fast oscillating eigenmodes. Underlying var…
During low-energy operations below the regular injection energy in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), significant beam lifetime reductions due to the beam-beam interaction in conjunction with large space charge tune shifts have been observed. We report on dedicated experiments aimed at understanding this phenomenon as well as preliminary simulation results, and propose alternative working points to improve the beam lifetime in future lowenergy RHIC runs.
Various projects under study require an angular-momentum-dominated electron beam generated by a photoinjector. Some of the proposals directly use the angular-momentum-dominated beams (e.g. electron cooling of heavy ions), while others require the beam to be transformed into a flat beam (e.g. possible electron injectors for light sources and linear colliders). In this paper, we report our experimental study of an angular-momentum-dominated beam produced in a photoinjector, addressing the dependencies of angular momentum on initial conditions. We also briefly discuss the removal of angular momen…
A process of energy transfer is demonstrated in non-equilibrium charged particle beams with anisotropy and space charge. Equipartitioning of energy between available degrees of freedom occurs in just a few betatron wavelengths, without halo formation. Collective space charge modes similar to those observed in recent experiments provide the underlying coupling mechanism. Since laboratory beams are commonly far from equilibrium, the traditional K-V stability analysis does not necessarily apply, implying that selection of an operating point based on theory does not necessarily avoid equipartition…
Progress on the Intensity Frontier of high energy physics critically depends on record high intensity charged particles accelerators. Beams in such machines become operationally limited by coherent beam instabilities, particularly enhanced in the regime of strong space charge (SC). Usual methods to control the instabilities, such as octupole magnets, beam feedback dampers and employment of chromatic effects, become less effective and insufficient. In [1] it was proposed to employ electron lenses for introduction of sufficient spread in particle oscillation frequencies needed for beam stabiliza…
Based on the Vlasov-Maxwell equations describing the self-consistent nonlinear beam dynamics and collective processes, the evolution of an intense sheet beam propagating through a periodic focusing field has been studied. It has been shown that in the case of a beam with uniform phase space density the Vlasov-Maxwell equations can be replaced exactly by the hydrodynamic equations with a triple adiabatic pressure law coupled to the Maxwell equations. We further demonstrate that starting from the system of hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations a set of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for th…
The consideration of transverse dynamics of relativistic space-charge dominated beams and halo growth due to bunch oscillations is based on variational approach to rational (in dynamical variables) approximation for rms envelope equations. It allows to control contribution from each scale of underlying multiscales and represent solutions via exact nonlinear eigenmodes expansions. Our approach is based on methods provided possibility to work with well-localized bases in phase space and good convergence properties of the corresponding expansions.
We present the results of transverse emittance and longitudinal current profile measurements of high bunch charge (greater than or equal to 100 pC) beams produced in the DC gun-based Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector. In particular, we show that the cathode thermal and core beam emittances dominate the final 95% and core emittance measured at 9-9.5 MeV. Additionally, we demonstrate excellent agreement between optimized 3D space charge simulations and measurement, and show that the quality of the transverse laser distribution limits the optimal simulated and measured emittances. These…
We describe a new electron cooler being developed for 2.5 MeV protons at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), which is a highly re-configurable storage ring at Fermilab. This system would enable the study of magnetized electron cooling in the presence of intense space-charge with transverse tune shifts approaching -0.5 as well as highly nonlinear focusing optics in the IOTA ring. We present an overview of the design, simulations and hardware to be used for this project.
In its normal mode of operation the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility uses a high charge (10-100 nC), short pulse (3-5 psec) drive bunch to excite high-gradient accelerating fields in various slow-wave structures. To generate this bunch, we designed a 1.5 cell, L-band, rf photocathode gun with an emittance compensating solenoid to give optimal performance at high-charge; it has recently completed commissioning. More recently, we have begun to investigate the possibility of using this gun in a high-brightness, low-charge operating mode, with charge equal to approximately 1 nC, for high-pre…
The transverse emittance of a charged particle beam is an important figure of merit for many accelerator applications, such as ultra-fast electron diffraction, free electron lasers and the operation of new compact accelerator concepts in general. One of the easiest to implement methods to determine the transverse emittance is the phase advance scan method using a focusing element and a screen. This method has been shown to work well in the thermal regime. In the space charge dominated laminar flow regime, however, the scheme becomes difficult to apply, because of the lack of a closed descripti…
As an extension of previous theoretical study on the coherent structure resonance due to space charge effects [Chao Li and R. A. Jameson, Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 21, 024204, 2018], this paper aims to demonstrate how the beam, as a whole, is spontaneously affected when the predicted mixed coherent 2nd/4th order structure resonance stop band around $90^{\circ}$ phase advance is crossed. The beam characteristics during the structure resonance crossing, such as the rms emittance growth and the appearance of 2-fold/4-fold structure in phase space, are well explained by the mixture characteristic of…
Investigation of neutrino oscillations and rare meson decays are main physics goals of Project X. The successful physics outcome relies on the feasibility of high-intensity neutrino and meson (K+ and μ) beams. In order to meet this goal we propose accelerator system dominated by the synchrotrons (Option A) as a technologically easier and significantly more cost-effective alternative to the accelerator system dominated by the linear accelerators (Option B). The synchrotron-based accelerator system and its main components are outlined and the expected proton beam power for the neutrino and meson…
The quite low Higgs particle mass makes it natural for the next high energy facility to be a circular e+e- Higgs factory and, after that, a next-generation p,p collider in the same tunnel. Surveying the luminosity-limiting phenomena of synchrotron radiation power loss, beam-beam interaction limitations, and beamstrahlung, scaling laws are established that fix all parameters of the Higgs factory, as functions of assumed radius $r$, and RF power $P$. at least to a first approximation. Historically the accelerator formalisms of electron and hadron rings have been distinguished largely by the impo…
In the DAEδALUS (Decay-At-rest Experiment for δCP studies At the Laboratory for Underground Science) project, high power H+2 cyclotron chains are proposed to efficiently provide proton beams with a kinetic energy of 800 MeV and an average power in the MW range. Space charge plays a pivotal role in both the injector and the ring cyclotrons. Large-scale particle simulations show that the injector cyclotron is a space charge dominated cyclotron and that a 5mA beam current can be extracted with tolerable beam losses on the septum. In contrast, in the ring cyclotron, no space charge induced beam lo…
We consider the collective beam dynamics at the injector section of the European XFEL. The results of the measurements for the longitudinal phase space (LPS) of the electron beam are compared with those obtained from numerical modeling. A new approach is proposed for the analysis of the self-field effects in the LPS measurements. It allows to determine accurately the synchronous RF phase in an accelerating module and to subtract properly the RF curvature imprinted in the LPS. A further incorporation with the simulation made it possible to separate the collective effects originating from differ…
High-intensity beams in modern linacs are frequently encircled by diffuse halos, which drive sustained particle losses and result in gradual degradation of accelerating structures. In large part, the growth of halos is facilitated by internal space-charge forces within the beams, and detailed characterization of this process constitutes an active area of ongoing research. A partial understanding of dynamics that ensue within space-charge dominated beams is presented by the particle-core interaction paradigm -- a mathematical model wherein single particle dynamics, subject to the collective pot…
To calculate nonlinear transport of space charge dominated beam in 6D phase spaces, a computer code package LEADS-v5 (Linear and Electrostatic Accelerator Dynamics Simulations) has been developed. The codes calculate particle motions in the beam transport systems consisting of electrostatic and magnetic focusing lenses, ion analyzers, multipoles and RF accelerating structures. The nonlinear forces of external electric/magnetic fields are analyzed by the Lie algebraic method, and the space charge forces are obtained by the particle in cell (PIC) scheme. In the codes, Uniform and Gaussian partic…
The University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) has operated traditionally in the regime of strong space-charge dominated beam transport, but small-current beams are desirable to significantly reduce the direct (incoherent) space-charge tune shift as well as the tune depression. This regime is of interest to model space-charge effects in large proton and ion rings similar to those used in nuclear physics and spallation neutron sources, and also for nonlinear dynamics studies of lattices inspired on the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). We review the definition of space-charge intensit…
The energy recovery linac test facility (ERL-TF), a compact ERL-FEL (free electron laser) two-purpose machine, was proposed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing. As one important component of the ERL-TF, the photo-injector started with a photocathode direct-current gun was designed and preliminarily optimized. In this paper an evolutionary genetic method, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, is applied to optimize the injector beam dynamics, especially in the high-charge operation mode. Study shows that using an incident laser with rms transverse size of 1~1.2 mm, the normal…
A 52MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator (linac) is designed to serve as an initial structure for the SSC-linac system (injector into Separated Sector Cyclotron). The designed injection and output energy are 3.5 keV/u and 143 keV/u, respectively. Beam dynamics study in RFQ was done using 3-dimensional particle-in-cell code BEAMPATH [1]. Simulation results show that this RFQ structure is characterized by stable value of beam transmission efficiency (at least 95%) for both zero-current mode and for space charge dominated regime. The beam accelerated in RFQ has good quality in …
The pepper-pot method is a popular emittance measurement technique for high intensity beams at low energy such as those generated by photo-injectors. In this paper, the beam dynamics in the space charge dominated regime and analytical design criteria for a mask-based emittance measurement (pepper-pot method) are revisited. A tracking code developed to test the performance of a pepper-pot setup is introduced. Examples of such testing are presented with particle distributions that were generated using PARMELA under different focusing conditions. These distributions were numerically tested agains…
This paper examines the transition from isotropic to anisotropic beam profiles in a linear focusing channel. Considering a high-intensity ion beam in space-charge dominated regime and large mismatched {\it RMS} beam size initially, observe a fast anisotropy situation of the beam, characterized for a transition of the transversal section round to elliptical with a coupling of transversal emittance driven for instabilities of nonlinear space-charge forces. Space-charge interactions in high-intensity linear accelerator can lead to equipartitioning of energy between the degrees of freedom. The ani…
It has been empirically observed in both experiments and particle-in-cell simulations that space-charge-dominated beams suffer strong growth in statistical phase-space area (degraded quality) and particle losses in alternating gradient quadrupole transport channels when the undepressed phase advance sigma_0 increases beyond about 85 degrees per lattice period. Although this criterion has been used extensively in practical designs of strong focusing intense beam transport lattices, the origin of the limit has not been understood. We propose a mechanism for the transport limit resulting from cla…
We revisit the description of inverse Compton scattering sources and the photon beams generated therein, emphasizing the behavior of their phase space density distributions and how they depend upon those of the two colliding beams of electrons and photons. Main objective is to provide practical formulas for bandwidth, spectral density, brilliance, which are valid in general for any value of the recoil factor, i.e. both in the Thomson regime of negligible electron recoil, and in the deep Compton recoil dominated region, which is of interest for gamma-gamma colliders and Compton Sources for the …
Plasma-based accelerators have made impressive progress in recent years. However, the beam energy spread obtained in these accelerators is still at ~ 1 % level, nearly one order of magnitude larger than what is needed for challenging applications like coherent light sources or colliders. In plasma accelerators, the beam energy spread is mainly dominated by its energy chirp (longitudinally correlated energy spread). Here we demonstrate that when an initially chirped electron beam from a linac with a proper current profile is sent through a low-density plasma structure, the self wake of the beam…
