In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at low-to-medium impact velocities (v/v_e <= 1) working on a modification of an already developed classical Over Barrier Model (OBM) [V. Ostrovsky, J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. {\bf 28} 3901 (1995)], which allows to give a semianalytical formula for the cross sections. The model is discussed and then applied to a number of test cases including experimental data as well as data coming from other sophisticated numerical simulations. It is found that the accuracy of the model, with the suggested corrections and applied to quite different situations, is rather high.
We have extended the classical over-barrier model to simulate the neutralization dynamics of highly charged ions interacting under grazing incidence with conducting and insulating surfaces. Our calculations are based on simple model rates for resonant and Auger transitions. We include effects caused by the dielectric response of the target and, for insulators, localized surface charges. Characteristic deviations regarding the charge transfer processes from conducting and insulating targets to the ion are discussed. We find good agreement with previously published experimental data for the imag…
Charge exchange collisions between ultracold fermionic 6Li atoms and 40Ca+ ions are observed in the mK temperature range. The reaction product of the charge exchange collision is identified via mass spectrometry during which the motion of the ions is excited parametrically. The cross-sections of the charge exchange collisions between 6Li atoms in the ground state and 40Ca+ ions in the ground and metastable excited states are determined. Investigation of the inelastic collision characteristics in the atom-ion mixture is an important step toward ultracold chemistry based on ultracold atoms and i…
In this paper we present a simple model for computing single electron exchange between light nuclei. The electronic capture is pictured as a tunnelling process in a model potential. This allows to analytically compute the transmission probability. Some comparisons with data from existing literature are given.
Absolute total cross sections for electron capture between slow, highly charged ions and alkali targets have been recently measured. It is found that these cross sections follow a scaling law with the projectile charge which is different from the one previously proposed basing on a classical over-barrier model (OBM) and verified using rare gases and molecules as targets. In this paper we develop a "semi-classical" (i.e. including some quantal features) OBM attempting to recover experimental results. The method is then applied to ion-hydrogen collisions and compared with the result of a sophist…
We present ab initio calculations of the complete gauge-invariant set of two-photon exchange graphs for the $(1s)^2 2p_{3/2}$ electron configuration in Li-like ions. These calculations are an important step towards the precise theoretical determination of the $2p_{3/2}$-$2s$ transition energy in the framework of QED.
The influence of hypothetical new interactions beyond the Standard Model on atomic spectra has attracted recent interest. In the present work, interelectronic photon-exchange corrections and radiative quantum electrodynamic corrections to the hypothetical contribution to the energy levels of few-electron ions from a new interaction are calculated. The $1s$, $2s$ and $2p_{1/2}$ ground states of H-like, Li-like and B-like ions are considered, as motivated by proposals to use isotope shift spectroscopy of few-electron ions in order to set stringent constraints on hypothetical new interactions. It…
We have employed x-ray spectroscopy to probe the charge changing process only in the bulk of the foil when swift heavy ions pass through it. In contrast, the electromagnetic methods take into account integral effect of the charge changing process in the bulk as well as the charge exchange phenomenon at the surface of the foil. Thus, the difference between the mean charge states so measured from the two methods disentangles the charge exchange phenomenon at the surface from the charge changing process in the bulk and, provides opportunities to refine the understanding of ion-surface interaction…
We develop an Over Barrier Model for computing charge exchange between ions and one-active-electron atoms at low impact energies. The main feature of the model is the treatment of the barrier crossing process by the electron within a simplified quantum mechanical formulation which takes into account: (a) the probability of electron reflection even for over-barrier scattering, and (b) the discreteness of the receiving atom's quantum levels which strongly suppress captures far from the resonance condition. It is shown that inclusion of these effects yields a fairly good prediction of experimenta…
We present a method for generating cold neutral atoms via charge exchange reactions between trapped ions and Rydberg positronium. The high charge exchange reaction cross section leads to efficient neutralisation of the ions and since the positronium-ion mass ratio is small, the neutrals do not gain appreciable kinetic energy in the process. When the original ions are cold the reaction produces neutrals that can be trapped or further manipulated with electromagnetic fields. Because a wide range of species can be targeted we envisage that our scheme may enable experiments at low temperature that…
We investigate the energy dependence and the internal-state dependence of the charge-exchange collision cross sections in a mixture of $^6$Li atoms and $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in the collision energy range from 0.2 mK to 1 K. Deliberately excited ion micromotion is used to control the collision energy of atoms and ions. The energy dependence of the charge-exchange collision cross section obeys the Langevin model in the temperature range of the current experiment, and the measured magnitude of the cross section is correlated to the internal state of the $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions. Revealing the relationship…
In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at low-to-medium impact velocities ($v/v_e \approx 1$) working on a modification of an already developed classical In this work we present an improvement over the Over Barrier Model (OBM) described in a recent paper [F. Sattin, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 62}, 042711 (2000)]. We show that: i) one of the two free parameters there introduced actually comes out consistently from the starting assumptions underlying the model; ii) the modified model thus obtaine…
The introduction of gases like nitrogen or neon for cooling the edge region of magnetically confined fusion plasmas has triggered a renewed interest in state selective cross sections necessary for plasma diagnostics by means of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. To improve the quality of spectroscopic data analysis, charge exchange and ionisation cross sections for N$^{7+}$ + H($n=1,2$) have been calculated using two different theoretical approaches, namely the atomic-orbital close-coupling method and the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Total and state resolved charge exchang…
We present experimental evidence of charge exchange between laser-cooled potassium $^{39}$K atoms and calcium $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in a hybrid atom-ion trap and give quantitative theoretical explanations for the observations. The $^{39}$K atoms and $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions are held in a magneto-optical (MOT) and a linear Paul trap, respectively. Fluorescence detection and high resolution time of flight mass spectra for both species are used to determine the remaining number of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions, the increasing number of $^{39}$K$^+$ ions, and $^{39}$K number density as functions of time. Simultaneous…
We perform high-resolution measurements of momentum distribution on Rb$^{n+}$ recoil ions up to charge state $n=4$, where laser-cooled rubidium atoms are ionized by femtosecond elliptically polarized lasers with the pulse duration of 35 fs and the intensity of 3.3$\times$10$^{15}$ W/cm$^2$ in the over-barrier ionization (OBI) regime. The momentum distributions of the recoil ions are found to exhibit multi-band structures as the ellipticity varies from the linear to circular polarizations. The origin of these band structures can be explained quantitatively by the classical OBI model and dedicat…
We investigate theoretically the possibility for robust and fast cooling of a trapped atomic ion by transient interaction with a pre-cooled ion. The transient coupling is achieved through dynamical control of the ions' equilibrium positions. To achieve short cooling times we make use of shortcuts to adiabaticity by applying invariant-based engineering. We design these to take account of imperfections such as stray fields, and trap frequency offsets. For settings appropriate to a currently operational trap in our laboratory, we find that robust performance could be achieved down to $6.3$ motion…
We report calculations of QED corrections to the $g$ factor of Li-like ions induced by the exchange of two virtual photons between the electrons. The calculations are performed within QED theory to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$, where $Z$ is the nuclear charge number and $α$ is the fine-structure constant. In the region of low nuclear charges we compare results from three different methods: QED, relativistic many-body perturbation theory, and nonrelativistic QED. All three methods are shown to yield consistent results. With our calculations we improve the accuracy o…
The two most widely used ion cooling methods are laser cooling and sympathetic cooling by elastic collisions (ECs). Here we demonstrate another method of cooling ions that is based on resonant charge exchange (RCE) between the trapped ion and the ultracold parent atom. Specifically, trapped Cs$^{+}$ ions are cooled by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Cs atoms and, separately, by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Rb atoms. We observe that the cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Cs atoms is more efficient than cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Rb atoms. This signals the presence of a cooling mechanis…
We study static-field ionization of He-like ions with nuclear charge number in the range of $2\le Z \le 36$. Both the tunneling and over-the-barrier regimes are considered. We calculate the ionization rates by three approximate methods: a fitting formula based on the Perelemov-Popov-Terent'ev (PPT) formula, a perturbative expansion in powers of $1/Z$, and a single-active electron approximation, and compare them with reference ionization rates computed by the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) approach. The relative deviation of the rates computed by the PPT-based fitting f…
The scattering of identical nuclei at low energies exhibits conspicuous Mott oscillations which can be used to investigate the presence of components in the predominantly Coulomb interaction arising from several physical effects. It is found that at a certain critical value of the Sommerfeld parameter the Mott oscillations disappear and the cross section becomes quite flat. We call this effect Transverse Isotropy (TI). The critical value of the Sommerfeld parameter at which TI sets in is found to be $η_{c} = \sqrt{3s +2}$, where $s$ is the spin of the nuclei participating in the scattering. No…
The description of threshold fragmentation under long range repulsive forces is presented. The dominant energy dependence near threshold is isolated by decomposing the cross section into a product of a back ground part and a barrier penetration probability resulting from the repulsive Coulomb interaction. This tunneling probability contains the dominant energy variation and it can be calculated analytically based on the same principles as Wannier's description for threshold ionization under attractive forces. Good agreement is found with the available experimental cross sections on detachment …
We present experimental studies of atom-ion collisions using buffer-gas cooled, trapped ytterbium (Yb$^+$) ions immersed in potassium (K) vapor. The range of the collisional temperature is on the order of several hundred kelvin (thermal regime). We have determined various collisional rate coefficients of the Yb$^+$ ion per K-atom number density. We find the upper bounds of charge-exchange rate coefficients $κ_{\rm ce}$ to be $(12.7\pm1.6)\times10^{-14}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ for K-$^{171}$Yb$^+$ and $(5.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-14}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ for K-$^{172}$Yb$^+$. For both isotopes, the spin-destructi…
Motivated by recent claims of a compelling ~3.5 keV emission line from nearby galaxies and galaxy clusters, we investigate a novel plasma model incorporating a charge exchange component obtained from theoretical scattering calculations. Fitting this kind of component with a standard thermal model yields positive residuals around 3.5 keV, produced mostly by S XVI transitions from principal quantum numbers n > 8 to the ground. Such high-n states can only be populated by the charge exchange process. In this scenario, the observed 3.5 keV line flux in clusters can be naturally explained by an inte…
The potential energy curves, permanent and transition dipole moments, and the static dipolar polarizability, of molecular ions composed of one alkali-metal atom and a Strontium ion are determined with a quantum chemistry approach. The molecular ions are treated as effective two-electron systems and are treated using effective core potentials including core polarization, large gaussian basis sets, and full configuration interaction. In the perspective of upcoming experiments aiming at merging cold atom and cold ion traps, possible paths for radiative charge exchange, photoassociation of a cold …
The absolute electron capture cross sections for single and double charge exchanges between the highly charged ions O6+ and CO2, CH4, H2, N2, the dominant collision processes in the solar wind, have been measured in the energy from 7 keV*q (2.63 keV/u) to 52 keV*q (19.5 keV/u). These measurements were carried out in the new experimental instrument set up at Fudan University, and the error of cross sections for single and double charge exchanges at the 1σ confidence level are about 11% and 16%, respectively. Limited agreement is achieved with single electron capture results calculated by the cl…
We analyze the various approaches to construct exchange-correlation functionals which are able to describe states of definite spin multiplicity in the DFT realm and outline the characteristics of possible functionals consistent with the Kohn-Sham theory. To achieve this goal the unitary group technique is applied to label many-electron states of definite total spin and to calculate the corresponding analogs of the Roothaan coupling coefficients. The possibility of using range separated Coulomb potential of electron-electron interaction for constructing functionals discriminating multiplet stat…
Universal properties of the Coulomb interaction energy apply to all many-electron systems. Bounds on the exchange-correlation energy, inparticular, are important for the construction of improved density functionals. Here we investigate one such universal property -- the Lieb-Oxford lower bound -- for ionic and molecular systems. In recent work [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 054106 (2007)], we observed that for atoms and electron liquids this bound may be substantially tightened. Calculations for a few ions and molecules suggested the same tendency, but were not conclusive due to the small number of syst…
A rigorous evaluation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the hyperfine structure in lithiumlike heavy ions is presented. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the specific difference between the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like Bi ions is significantly improved. This opens a possibility for the stringent test of the many-electron QED effects on a few percent level in the strongest electromagnetic field presently available in experiments.
Charge exchange between highly charged ions and neutral atoms and molecules has been considered as one of the important mechanisms controlling soft X ray emissions in many astrophysical objects and environments. However, for modeling charge exchange soft X ray emission, the data of n and l resolved state selective capture cross sections are often obtained by empirical and semiclassical theory calculations. With a newly built cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) apparatus, we perform a series of measurements of the charge exchange of Ne(8,9)+ ions with He and H2 for collision…
Exchange interaction strongly influences the long-range behaviour of localised electron orbitals. It violates the oscillation theorem (creates extra nodes) and produces a power-law decay instead of the usual exponential decrease at large distances. For inner orbitals inside molecules decay is 1/r^2, for macroscopic systems cos(k_f r)/r^n, where k_f is the Fermi momentum and n=3 for 1D, n=3.5 for 2D and n=4 for 3D crystal. Slow decay increases the exchange interaction between localised spins and the under-barrier tunneling amplitude. The under-barrier transmission coefficients in solids (e.g. fo…
The exchange interaction and correlations may produce a power-law decay instead of the usual exponential decrease of the wave function under potential barrier. The exchange-assisted tunneling vanishes in the classical limit, however, the dependence on the Planck constant h is different from that for a conventional single-particle tunneling.
