If the fundamental group of the complement of a smooth embedding f: S^2 \subset R^4 is a cyclic group, the map can be deformed to the standard embedding by a generic one-parameter family with at most cusp singularities. If two smooth embeddings are connected by such a deformation, they will be called cusp equivalent. We will discuss the relation of three equivalences of smooth 2-knots S^2 \subset R^4; cusp equivalence, stable equivalence and weakly stable equivalence.
In the present paper, we construct a cusped hyperbolic $4$-manifold with all cusp sections homeomorphic to the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold, which is a rational homology sphere. By a result of Golénia and Moroianu, the Laplacian on $2$-forms on such a manifold has purely discrete spectrum. This shows that one of the main results of Mazzeo and Phillips from 1990 cannot hold without additional assumptions on the homology of the cusps. This also answers a question by Golénia and Moroianu from 2012. We also correct and refine the incomplete classification of compact orientable flat $3$-manifolds arisi…
We prove Arnol'd's three cusps conjecture about the front of Legendrian curves in the projectivized cotangent bundle of the $2$-sphere. We use the microlocal theory of sheaves of Kashiwara and Schapira and study the derived category of sheaves on the $2$-sphere with a given smooth Lagrangian microsupport.
We construct smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the "cusp" and the "fishtail", which are certain thickened singular 2-spheres.
For each diagram $D$ of a $2$-knot, we provide a way to construct a new diagram $D'$ of the same knot such that any sequence of Roseman moves between $D$ and $D'$ necessarily involves branch points. The proof is done by developing the observation that no sphere eversion can be lifted to an isotopy in $4$-space.
This article is dedicated to prove Buser's conjecture about Bers' constants for spheres with cusps (or marked points) and for hyperelliptic surfaces. More specifically, our main theorem states that any hyperbolic sphere with $n$ cusps has a pants decomposition with all of its geodesics of length bounded by a constant roughly square root of $n$. Other results include lower and upper bounds for Bers' constants for hyperelliptic surfaces and spheres with boundary geodesics.
We prove that all homology 3-spheres are $J_4$-equivalent, i.e. that any homology 3-sphere can be obtained from one another by twisting one of its Heegaard splittings by an element of the mapping class group acting trivially on the fourth nilpotent quotient of the fundamental group of the gluing surface. We do so by exhibiting an element of $J_4$, the fourth term of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group, on which (the core of) the Casson invariant takes the value $1$. In particular, this provides an explicit example of an element of $J_4$ that is not a commutator of length $2$ in t…
A generalized cusp $C$ is diffeomorphic to $[0,\infty)$ times a closed Euclidean manifold. Geometrically $C$ is the quotient of a properly convex domain by a lattice, $Γ$, in one of a family of affine groups $G(ψ)$, parameterized by a point $ψ$ in the (dual closed) Weyl chamber for $SL(n+1,\mathbb{R})$, and $Γ$ determines the cusp up to equivalence. These affine groups correspond to certain fibered geometries, each of which is a bundle over an open simplex with fiber a horoball in hyperbolic space, and the lattices are classified by certain Bieberbach groups plus some auxiliary data. The cusp …
Let $M$ be a hyperbolic 3-manifold with no rank two cusps admitting an embedding in $\mathbb S^3$. Then, if $M$ admits an exhaustion by $π_1$-injective sub-manifolds there exists cantor sets $C_n\subset \mathbb S^3$ such that $N_n=\mathbb S^3\setminus C_n$ is hyperbolic and $N_n\rightarrow M$ geometrically.
In the present work, we study the decompositions of codimension-one transitions that alter the singular set the of stable maps of $S^3$ into $\mathbb{R}^3,$ the topological behaviour of the singular set and the singularities in the branch set that involves cuspidal curves and swallowtails that alter the singular set. We also analyse the effects of these decompositions on the global invariants with prescribed branch sets.
We establish a structural understanding of the involutive Heegaard Floer homology for all linear combinations of almost-rational (AR) plumbed three-manifolds. We use this to show that the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant is a homology cobordism invariant for all linear combinations of AR plumbed homology spheres. As a corollary, we prove that if $Y$ is a linear combination of AR plumbed homology spheres with $μ(Y) = 1$, then $Y$ is not torsion in the homology cobordism group. A general computation of the involutive Heegaard Floer correction terms for these spaces is also included.
We find a constructive bound for the word length of a generating set for the centralizer of an element of the Mapping Class Group. As a consequence, we show that it is algorithmically decidable whether two postcritically finite branched coverings of the sphere are Thurston equivalent.
A group $Γ$ with a family of subgroups $\mathbb{P}$ is relatively hyperbolic if $Γ$ admits a cusp-uniform action on a proper $δ$--hyperbolic space. We show that any two such spaces for a given group pair are quasi-isometric, provided the spaces have "constant horospherical distortion," a condition satisfied by Groves--Manning's cusped Cayley graph and by all negatively curved symmetric spaces. Consequently the Bowditch boundary admits a canonical quasisymmetric structure, which coincides with the "naturally occurring" quasisymmetric structure of the symmetric space when considering lattices in…
We define \emph{piecewise rank 1} manifolds, which are aspherical manifolds that generally do not admit a nonpositively curved metric but can be decomposed into pieces that are diffeomorphic to finite volume, irreducible, locally symmetric, nonpositively curved manifolds with $π_1$-injective cusps. We prove smooth (self) rigidity for this class of manifolds in the case where the gluing preserves the cusps' homogeneous structure. We compute the group of self homotopy equivalences of such a manifold and show that it can contain a normal free abelian subgroup and thus, can be infinite. Elements o…
We show that two open books in a given closed, oriented three-manifold admit isotopic stabilizations, where the stabilization is made by successive plumbings with Hopf bands, if and only if their associated plane fields are homologous. Since this condition is automatically fulfilled in an integral homology sphere, the theorem implies a conjecture of J Harer, namely, that any fibered link in the three-sphere can be obtained from the unknot by a sequence of plumbings and deplumbings of Hopf bands. The proof presented here involves contact geometry in an essential way.
Cobordism groups of cooriented fold maps of codimension 1 are computed completely. Namely their odd torsion part coincides with that of the stable homotopy group of spheres in the same dimension, while the 2-primary part is the kernel of the Kahn-Priddy map. (The Kahn-Priddy map is an epimorhism of the stable homotopy group of the infinite dimensional real projective space onto the 2-primary part of the stable homotopy group of spheres). Analogous results - modulo small primes - are obtained for cusp maps and more complicated Morin maps as well.
Null Lagrangian-preserving surgeries are a generalization of the Garoufalidis and Rozansky null-moves, that these authors introduced to study the Kricker lift of the Kontsevich integral, in the setting of pairs (M,K) composed of a rational homology sphere M and a null-homologous knot K in M. They are defined as replacements of null-homologous rational homology handlebodies of M\K by other such handlebodies with identical Lagrangian. A null Lagrangian-preserving surgery induces a canonical isomorphism between the rational Alexander modules of the involved pairs, which preserves the Blanchfield …
