Documenta Math. 4 (1999) 487-512, (http://www.mathematik.uni-bielefeld.de/documenta/vol-04/vol-04.html) with new title: Einstein Metrics and Stability for Flat Connections on Compact Hermitian Manifolds, and a Correspondence with Higgs Operators in the Surface Case
A flat complex vector bundle (E,D) on a compact Riemannian manifold (X,g) is stable (resp. polystable) in the sense of Corlette [C] if it has no D-invariant subbundle (resp. if it is the D-invariant direct sum of stable subbundles). It has been shown in [C] that the polystability of (E,D) in this sense is equivalent to the existence of a so-called harmonic metric in E. In this paper we consider flat complex vector bundles on compact Hermitian manifolds (X,g). We propose new notions of g-(poly-)stability of such bundles, and of g-Einstein metrics in them; these notions coincide with (poly-)stability and harmonicity in the sense of Corlette if g is a Kähler metric, but are different in general. Our main result is that the g-polystability in our sense is equivalent to the existence of a g-Hermitian-Einstein metric. Our notion of a g-Einstein metric in a flat bundle is motivated by a correspondence between flat bundles and Higgs bundles over compact surfaces, analogous to the correspondence in the case of Kähler manifolds [S1], [S2], [S3].

In this paper, using Donaldson's heat flow, we show that the semi-stability of a Higgs bundle over a compact Kähler manifold implies the existence of approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure on the Higgs bundle.
We introduce some generalizations of the Hermitian-Einstein equation for diagonal harmonic metrics on cyclic Higgs bundles, including a generalization using subharmonic functions. When the coefficients are all smooth, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and convergence of the solution of their heat equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also generalize two inequality estimates for solutions of the Hermitian-Einstein equation for cyclic Higgs bundles.
In this paper, we study Higgs bundles on non-compact Hermitian manifolds. Under some assumptions for the underlying Hermitian manifolds which are not necessarily Kähler, we solve the Hermitian-Einstein equation on analytically stable Higgs bundles.
We define homogeneous principal Higgs and co-Higgs bundles over irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type. We provide a classification for each type of object up to isomorphism, which in each case can be interpreted as defining a moduli space.
A local classification of the Hermitian manifolds with flat associated connection is given. Hermitian manifolds admitting locally a conformal metric with flat associated connection are characterized by a curvature identity. Locally conformal Kaehler manifolds as well as Hermitian surfaces with vanishing associated conformal curvature tensor are characterized as locally conformal to a Kaehler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures.
Let $X$ be a compact Gauduchon manifold, and let $E$ and $V_0$ be holomorphic vector bundles over $X$. Suppose that $E$ is stable when considering all subsheaves preserved by a Higgs field $θ\in H^0($End$(E)\otimes V_0)$. Then a modified version of the Donaldson heat flow converges along a subsequence of times to a solution of a generalized Hermitian-Einstein equation, given by $iΛF+[θ,θ^\dagger]=λI$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb C$. We prove that a twisted Higgs vector bundle $(\calE\, ,θ)$ on $X$ admits an Einstein--Hermitian connection if and only if $(\calE\, ,θ)$ is polystable. A similar result for twisted vector bundles (no Higgs fields) was proved by S. Wang in \cite{Wa}. Our approach is simpler.
Given a smooth complex projective variety X and a smooth divisor D on X, we prove the existence of Hermitian-Einstein connections, with respect to a Poincaré-type metric on X - D, on polystable parabolic principal Higgs bundles with parabolic structure over D, satisfying certain conditions on its restriction to D.
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve and S a finite subset of X. We show that an orthogonal or symplectic parabolic Higgs bundle on X with parabolic structure over S admits a Hermitian-Einstein connection if and only if it is polystable.
We review the notions of (weak) Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure and approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure for Higgs bundles. Then, we construct the Donaldson functional for Higgs bundles over compact Kähler manifolds and we present some basic properties of it. In particular, we show that its gradient flow can be written in terms of the mean curvature of the Hitchin-Simpson connection. We also study some properties of the evolution equation associated to that functional. Next, we study the problem of the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure and its relation with the algeb…
We complete the classification of compact Hermitian manifolds admitting a flat Gauduchon connection. In particular, we establish a conjecture of Yang and Zheng, showing that apart from the cases of a flat Chern or Bismut connection, such manifolds are Kähler. More generally, we prove the same result holds when the flatness assumption is replaced by the so-called Kähler-like condition, proving a conjecture of Angella, Otal, Ugarte and Villacampa. We also treat the non-compact case.
In this paper, we study numerically flat holomorphic vector bundles over a compact non-Kähler manifold $(X, ω)$ with the Hermitian metric $ω$ satisfying the Gauduchon and Astheno-Kähler conditions. We prove that numerically flatness is equivalent to numerically effectiveness with vanishing first Chern number, semistablity with vanishing first and second Chern numbers, approximate Hermitian flatness and the existence of a filtration whose quotients are Hermitian flat. This gives an affirmative answer to the question proposed by Demailly, Peternell and Schneider.
We generalize the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence between semistability and the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures to the case of principal Higgs bundles. We prove that a principal Higgs bundle on a compact Kaehler manifold, with structure group a connected linear algebraic reductive group, is semistable if and only if it admits an approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure.
Given a Hermitian manifold $(M^n,g)$, the Gauduchon connections are the one parameter family of Hermitian connections joining the Chern connection and the Bismut connection. We will call $\nabla^s = (1-\frac{s}{2})\nabla^c + \frac{s}{2}\nabla^b$ the $s$-Gauduchon connection of $M$, where $\nabla^c$ and $\nabla^b$ are respectively the Chern and Bismut connections. It is natural to ask when a compact Hermitian manifold could admit a flat $s$-Gauduchon connection. This is related to a question asked by Yau \cite{Yau}. The cases with $s=0$ (a flat Chern connection) or $s=2$ (a flat Bismut connecti…
We study the basic properties of Higgs sheaves over compact Kähler manifolds and we establish some results concerning the notion of semistability; in particular, we show that any extension of semistable Higgs sheaves with equal slopes is semistable. Then, we use the flattening theorem to construct a regularization of any torsion-free Higgs sheaf and we show that it is in fact a Higgs bundle. Using this, we prove that any Hermitian metric on a regularization of a torsion-free Higgs sheaf induces an admissible structure on the Higgs sheaf. Finally, using admissible structures we proved some prop…
We pursuit the research line proposed in \cite{YZ-Gflat} about the classification of Hermitian manifolds whose $s$-Gauduchon connection $\nabla^s =(1-\frac{s}{2})\nabla^c + \frac{s}{2}\nabla^b$ is flat, where $s \in \mathbb{R}$ and $\nabla^c$ and $\nabla^b$ are the Chern and the Bismut connections, respectively. We focus on Lie groups equipped with a left invariant Hermitian structure. Such spaces provide an important class of Hermitian manifolds in various contexts and are often a valuable vehicle for testing new phenomena in complex and Hermitian geometry. More precisely, we consider a conne…
In the paper "Direct Images, Fields of Hilbert Spaces, and Geometric Quantization", Lempert and Szőke proved that any flat analytic Hilbert field will induce a hermitian Hilbert bundle and gave an example of a flat Hilbert field that does not induce any Hilbert bundle. In this paper, we will provide an example of an analytic Hilbert field that does not induce any Hilbert bundle.
In this paper, we use the affine Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow to prove a generalized Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem on flat Higgs bundles over a class of non-compact affine Gauduchon manifolds.
In this note, by using the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow, we show that semistable Higgs bundles with vanishing the first and second Chern numbers over compact Käher manifolds must admit a filtration whose quotients are Hermitian flat Higgs bundles.
In this paper, we consider the existence of approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure and the semi-stability on Higgs bundles over compact Gauduchon manifolds. By using the continuity method, we show that they are equivalent.
We also study some properties of the solutions of the evolution equation associated with that functional. Next, we study the problem of the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures and its rel…
We introduce the notion of Hermitian Higgs bundle as a natural generalization of the notion of Hermitian vector bundle and we study some vanishing theorems concerning Hermitian Higgs bundles when the base manifold is a compact complex manifold. We show that a first vanishing result, proved for these objects when the base manifold was Kähler, also holds when the manifold is compact complex. From this fact and some basic properties of Hermitian Higgs bundles, we conclude several results. In particular we show that, in analogy to the classical case, there are vanishing theorems for invariant sect…
The study of quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian manifolds is strictly related to the study of anti-bi-invariant almost complex Lie algebras. In the present paper we show that quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian structures on compact manifolds are in correspondence to complex parallelisable Hermitian structures satisfying the second Gray identity. From an algebraic point of view this correspondence reads as a natural correspondence between anti-bi-invariant almost complex structures on Lie algebras to bi-invariant complex structures. Some natural algebraic problems are approached and…
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
We study two types of isotropic planes: weakly isotropic and strongly isotropic planes. We prove that a Riemannian manifold of indefinite metric is conformally flat if and only if its curvature tensor vanishes on all the strongly isotropic planes. We specialize the plane axiom for Riemannian manifolds of indefinite metrics. We show that manifolds satisfying plane axiom of weakly (strongly) isotropic planes are of constant sectional curvature (conformaly flat). Further we study analogous problems on almost Hermitian manifolds of indefinite metrics.
The Corlette-Donaldson-Hitchin-Simpson's correspondence states that, on a compact Kähler manifold $(X, ω)$, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the moduli space of semisimple flat complex vector bundles and the moduli space of poly-stable Higgs bundles with vanishing Chern numbers. In this paper, we extend this correspondence to the projectively flat bundles case. We prove that there is an equivalence of categories between the category of $ω$-semi-stable (poly-stable) Higgs bundles $(E, \overline{\partial}_{E}, ϕ)$ with $(2rc_{2}(E)-(r-1)c_{1}^{2}(E))\cdot [ω]^{n-2}=0 $ and the catego…
We discuss a technique to construct Ricci-flat hermitian metrics on complements of (some) anticanonical divisors of almost homogeneous manifolds and discuss when this metric is complete and Kähler. This construction has a strong interplay with invariance groups of the same dimension as the manifold acting with an open orbit. Lie groups of this type we call divisorial. As an application we can describe compact manifolds admitting a divisorially invariant Kähler metric on an open subset. Finally, we see a connection between the reducibility of the anticanonical divisor and the non-triviality of …
It is proved that if an almost Hermitian manifold of dimension greater than 4 has vanishing (classical) Bochner curvature tensor and is not Kaehlerian at a point, then it is flat in a neighbourhood of this point.
In this paper, we consider the gradient flow of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional for Higgs pairs on a Hermitian vector bundle $(E, H_{0})$ over a compact Kähler manifold $(M, ω)$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow for Higgs pairs at infinity, and show that the limiting Higgs sheaf is isomorphic to the double dual of the graded Higgs sheaves associated to the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of the initial Higgs bundle.
We examine the class of compact Hermitian manifolds with constant holomorphic sectional curvature. Such manifolds are conjectured to be Kähler (hence a complex space form) when the constant is non-zero and Chern flat (hence a quotient of a complex Lie group) when the constant is zero. The conjecture is known in complex dimension two but open in higher dimensions. In this paper, we establish a partial solution in complex dimension three by proving that any compact Hermitian threefold with zero real bisectional curvature must be Chern flat. Real bisectional curvature is a curvature notion introd…
Let $K\backslash G$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type and $Γ\,\subset\, G$ a closed torsionfree discrete subgroup. Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $ρ\, :\, π_1(X, x_0)\,\longrightarrow\, Γ$ a homomorphism such that the adjoint action of $ρ(π_1(X, x_0))$ on $\text{Lie}(G)$ is completely reducible. A theorem of Corlette associates to $ρ$ a harmonic map $X\, \longrightarrow\, K\backslash G/Γ$. We give a criterion for this harmonic map to be holomorphic. We also give a criterion for it to be anti--holomorphic.
In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the $(1,1)$- component of the curvature $2$-form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds $S^{2n-…
We define a functional ${\cal J}(h)$ for the space of Hermitian metrics on an arbitrary Higgs bundle over a compact Kähler manifold, as a natural generalization of the mean curvature energy functional of Kobayashi for holomorphic vector bundles \cite{Kobayashi}, and study some of its basic properties. We show that ${\cal J}(h)$ is bounded from below by a nonnegative constant depending on invariants of the Higgs bundle and the Kähler manifold, and that when achieved, its absolute minima are Hermite-Yang-Mills metrics. We derive a formula relating ${\cal J}(h)$ and another functional ${\cal I}(h…
We review the theory of quaternionic Kahler and hyperkahler structures. Then we consider the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold M with a metric connection D (with torsion) and with its well estabilished canonical complex structure. With an extra almost Hermitian structure on M it is possible to find a quaternionic Hermitian structure on TM, which is quaternionic Kahler if, and only if, D is flat and torsion free. We also review the symplectic nature of TM. Finally a proper S^3-bundle of complex structures is introduced, expanding to TM the well known twistor bundle of M.
Let $X\rightarrow {\mathbb P}^1$ be an elliptically fibered $K3$ surface, admitting a sequence $ω_{i}$ of Ricci-flat metrics collapsing the fibers. Let $V$ be a holomorphic $SU(n)$ bundle over $X$, stable with respect to $ω_i$. Given the corresponding sequence $Ξ_i$ of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on $V$, we prove that, if $E$ is a generic fiber, the restricted sequence $Ξ_i|_{E}$ converges to a flat connection $A_0$. Furthermore, if the restriction $V|_E$ is of the form $\oplus_{j=1}^n\mathcal O_E(q_j-0)$ for $n$ distinct points $q_j\in E$, then these points uniquely determine $A_0$.
Given a generic ray of Higgs bundles $(\overline{\partial}_E, tφ)$, we describe the corresponding family of hermitian metrics $h_t$ solving Hitchin's equations via gluing methods. In the process, we construct a family of approximate solutions $h_t^{\mathrm{app}}$ which differ from the actual harmonic metrics $h_t$ by error terms of size $\mathrm{e}^{-δt}$. Such families of explicit approximate solutions have already proved useful for answering finer questions about the asymptotic geometry of the Hitchin moduli space.
We give a classification of toric, Hermitian, Ricci flat, ALF Riemannian metrics in dimension 4, including metrics with conical singularities. The only smooth examples are on one hand the hyperKaehler ALF metrics, on the other hand, the Kerr, Taub-NUT and Chen-Teo metrics. There are examples with conical singularities with infinitely many distinct topologies. We provide explicit formulas.
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and Norden metrics and more specially the corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifolds are considered. Some necessary and sufficient conditions the investigated manifolds be isotropic hyper-Kaehlerian and flat are found. It is proved that the quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with the considered metric structure are Einstein for dimension at least 8. The class of the non-hyper-Kaehler quaternionic Kaehler manifold of the considered type is determined.
I consider principal Higgs bundles satisfying a notion of numerical flatness (H-nflatness) that was introduced by Bruzzo and Graña Otero. I prove that a principal Higgs bundle $\mathfrak{E}=(E,φ)$ is H-nflat is either stable or there exists a Higgs reduction of $\mathfrak{E}$ to a parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ such that the principal $L$-bundle $\mathfrak{E}_L$ obtained by extending the reduced Higgs bundle $\mathfrak{E}_P$ to the Levi factor $L$ is H-nflat and stable; and as consequence, $H^{*}(\mathfrak{E},\mathbb{R})$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the associated graded object $\ma…
Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler--Einstein manifold with $c_1(TX)\, \geq\, 0$. If there is a semistable Higgs vector bundle $(E\,,θ)$ on $X$ with $θ\,\not=\,0$, then we show that $c_1(TX)=0$, any $X$ satisfying this condition is called a Calabi--Yau manifold, and it admits a Ricci--flat Kähler form \cite{Ya}. Let $(E\,,θ)$ be a polystable Higgs vector bundle on a compact Ricci--flat Kähler manifold $X$. Let $h$ be an Hermitian structure on $E$ satisfying the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation for $(E\,,θ)$. We prove that $h$ also satisfies the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation for $(E\,,0)$. A similar…
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
We develop a theory of stable bundles and affine Hermitian-Einstein metrics for flat vector bundles over a special affine manifold (a manifold admitting an atlas whose gluing maps are all locally constant volume-preserving affine maps). Our paper presents a parallel to Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau's proof of the existence of Hermitian-Einstein metrics on Kähler manifolds, and the extension of this theorem by Li-Yau to the non-Kähler complex case of Gauduchon metrics. Our definition of stability involves only flat vector subbundles (and not singular subsheaves), and so is simpler than the complex ca…
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) if its fundamental 2-form $ω$ is $\partial \bar \partial$-closed. We review some properties of strong KT metrics also in relation with symplectic forms taming complex structures. Starting from a $2n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ {and using} a Hermitian flat connection on $\mathfrak g$ we construct a $4n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra. We apply this method to some 4-dimensional SKT Lie algebras. Moreover, we classify symplectic forms taming complex structures on 4-dimensional Lie algebras.
