The subgroups of GL(n,R) that act irreducibly on R^n and that can occur as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection on an n-manifold are classified, thus completing the work on this subject begun by M. Berger in the 1950s. The methods employed include representation theory, the theory of hermitian symmetric spaces, twistor theory, and Poisson geometry. The latter theory is especially important for the construction and classification of those torsion-free connections whose holonomy falls into one of the so-called `exotic' cases, i.e., those that were not included in Berger's original lists. Some remarks involving an interpretation of some of the examples in terms of supersymmetric constructions are also included.
The real form Spin(6,H) in End(R^{32}) of Spin(12,C) in End(C^{32}) is absolutely irreducible and thus satisfies the algebraic identities (40) and (41). Therefore, it also occurs as an exotic holonomy and the associated supermanifold M_g admits a SUSY-invariant polynomial. This real form has been erroneously omitted in our paper. Also, the two real four-dimensional exotic holonomies, whose occurrences were un known at the time of writing, have been shown to exist very recently by R. Bryant.
That announcement gives the structure of totally reducible linear Lie algebras which are the Lie algebra of the holonomy group of (at least) one torsion-free connection. The result uses the (already known) classi cation of the irreducible ones and some previous (unpublished) works by the author giving the classi cation for the pseudo-riemannian totally reducible case. One describes those Lie subalgebras through a general structure theorem involving two constructions and some lists. These constructions give new examples of non irreducible totally reducible holonomy algebras and also recover som…
It is proved that the Lie groups $\E_7^{(5)}$ and $\E^{(7)}_7$ represented in $\R^{56}$ and the Lie group $\E_7^{\C}$ represented in $\R^{112}$ occur as holonomies of torsion-free affine connections. It is also shown that the moduli spaces of torsion-free affine connnections with these holonomies are finite dimensional, and that every such connection has a local symmetry group of positive dimension.
This paper is a review of the twistor theory of irreducible G-structures and affine connections. Long ago, Berger presented a very restricted list of possible irreducibly acting holonomies of torsion-free affine connections. His list was complete in the part of metric connections, while the situation with holonomies of non-metric torsion-free affine connections was and remains rather unclear. One of the results discussed in this review asserts that any torsion-free holomorphic affine connection with irreducibly acting holonomy group can, in principle, be constructed by twistor methods. Another…
The reductive holonomy algebras for a torsion-free affine connection are analysed, with the goal of establishing which ones can correspond to a Ricci-flat connection with the same properties. Various families of holonomies are eliminated through different algebraic means, and examples are constructed (in this paper and in `Projective Geometry II: Holonomy Classification', by the same author) in the remaining cases, thus solving this problem completely, for reductive holonomy.
Our aim is to support the choice of two remarkable connections with torsion in a 3-Sasakian manifold, proving that, in contrast to the Levi-Civita connection, the holonomy group in the homogeneous cases reduces to a proper subgroup of the special orthogonal group, of dimension considerably smaller. We realize the computations of the holonomies in a unified way, by using as a main algebraic tool a nonassociative structure, that one of symplectic triple system.

In 1955, Berger \cite{Ber} gave a list of irreducible reductive representations which can occur as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection. This list was stated to be complete up to possibly a finite number of missing entries. In this paper, we show that there is, in fact, an infinite family of representations which are missing from this list, thereby showing the incompleteness of Berger's classification. Moreover, we develop a method to construct torsion-free connections with prescribed holonomy, and use it to give a complete description of the torsion-free affine connections with th…
We consider the nonstandard inclusion of SO(3) in SO(5) associated with a 5-dimensional irreducible representation. The tensor $Υ$ representing this reduction is found to be given by a ternary symmetric form with special properties. A 5-dimensional manifold $(M,g,Υ)$ with Riemannian metric $g$ and ternary form generated by such a tensor has a corresponding SO(3) structure, whose Gray-Hervella type classification is established using so(3)-valued connections with torsion. Structures with antisymmetric torsions, we call them the nearly integrable SO(3) structures, are studied in detail. In parti…
In this paper we complete the study of the normal holonomy groups of complex submanifolds (non nec. complete) of Cn or CPn. We show that irreducible but non transitive normal holonomies are exactly the Hermitian s-representations of [CD09, Table 1] (see Corollary 1.1). For each one of them we construct a non necessarily complete complex submanifold whose normal holonomy is the prescribed s-representation. We also show that if the submanifold has irreducible non transitive normal holonomy then it is an open subset of the smooth part of one of the characteristic varieties studied by N. Mok in hi…
We study five dimensional geometries associated with the 5-dimensional irreducible representation of GL(2,R). These are special Weyl geometries in signature (3,2) having the structure group reduced from CO(3,2) to GL(2,R). The reduction is obtained by means of a conformal class of totally symmetric 3-tensors. Among all GL(2,R) geometries we distinguish a subclass which we term `nearly integrable GL(2,R)geometries'. These define a unique gl(2,R) connection which has totally skew symmetric torsion. This torsion splits onto the GL(2,R) irreducible components having respective dimensions 3 and 7. …
We consider the question: can the isotropy representation of an irreducible pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space be realized as a conformal holonomy group? Using recent results of Cap, Gover and Hammerl, we study the representations of SO(2,1), PSU(2,1) and PSp(2,1) as isotropy groups of irreducible symmetric spaces of signature (3,2), (4,4) and (6,8), respectively, describing the geometry induced by a conformal holonomy reduction to the corresponding subgroups. In the case of SO(2,1) we show that conformal manifolds with such a holonomy reduction are always locally conformally flat and hence thi…
We prove a Berger-type theorem which asserts that if the orthogonal subgroup generated by the torsion tensor (pulled back to a point by parallel transport) of a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion is not transitive on the sphere, then the space must be locally isometric to a Lie group with a bi-invariant metric or its symmetric dual (we assume the space to be locally irreducible). We also prove that a (simple) Lie group with a bi-invariant metric admits only two flat metric connections with skew-symmetric torsion: the two flat canonical connections. In particular, we get a refinement…
The classification of Riemannian manifolds by the holonomy group of their Levi-Civita connection picks out many interesting classes of structures, several of which are solutions to the Einstein equations. The classification has two parts. The first consists of isolated examples: the Riemannian symmetric spaces. The second consists of geometries that can occur in continuous families: these include the Calabi-Yau structures and Joyce manifolds of string theory. One may ask how one can weaken the definitions and still obtain similar classifications. We present two closely related suggestions. The…
We study the irreducible decomposition under Sp(2n, R) of the space of torsion tensors of almost symplectic connections. Then a description of all symplectic quadratic invariants of torsion-like tensors is given. When applied to a manifold M with an almost symplectic structure, these instruments give preliminary insight for finding a preferred linear almost symplectic connection on M . We rediscover Ph. Tondeur's Theorem on almost symplectic connections. Properties of torsion of the vectorial kind are deduced.
We prove a Simons-type holonomy theorem for totally skew 1-forms with values in a Lie algebra of linear isometries. The only transitive case, for this theorem, is the full orthogonal group. We only use geometric methods and we do not use any classification (not even that of transitive isometric actions on the sphere or the list of rank one symmetric spaces). This result was independently proved, by using an algebraic approach, by Paul-Andy Nagy. We apply this theorem to prove that the canonical connection of a compact naturally reductive space is unique, provided the space does not split off, …
In this short note we study flat metric connections with antisymmetric torsion $T \neq 0$. The result has been originally discovered by Cartan/Schouten in 1926 and we provide a new proof not depending on the classification of symmetric spaces. Any space of that type splits and the irreducible factors are compact simple Lie group or a special connection on $S^7$. The latter case is interesting from the viewpoint of $G_2$-structures and we discuss its type in the sense of the Fernandez-Gray classification. Moreover, we investigate flat metric connections of vectorial type.
It is shown that any irreducible analytic 1-flat $G$-structure as well as any analytic torsion-free affine connection with irreducibly acting holonomy group can, in principle, be contstructed by twistor methods.
A locally metric connection on a smooth manifold $M$ is a torsion-free connection $D$ on $TM$ with compact restricted holonomy group $\mathrm{Hol}_0(D)$. If the holonomy representation of such a connection is irreducible, then $D$ preserves a conformal structure on $M$. Under some natural geometric assumption on the life-time of incomplete geodesics, we prove that conversely, a locally metric connection $D$ preserving a conformal structure on a compact manifold $M$ has irreducible holonomy representation, unless $\mathrm{Hol}_0(D)=0$ or $D$ is the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric …
1-flat irreducible G-structures, equivalently, irreducible G-structures admitting torsion-free affine connections, have been studied extensively in differential geometry, especially in connection with the theory of affine holonomy groups. We propose to study them in a setting in algebraic geometry, where they arise from varieties of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) associated to families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. We prove that such a structure is locally symmetric when the dimension of the uniruled projective manifold is at least 5. By the classification resu…
We classify the possible local holonomy groups of Weyl connections. The Berger-Simons theorem and the Merkulov-Schwachhöfer classification of holonomy groups of irreducible torsion-free connections leaves us with the remaining case, where the Weyl connection $D$ is reducible and non-closed. In this case, it was shown by F. Belgun and A. Moroianu that the Weyl structure is an adapted Weyl structure of a non-closed conformal product. Furthermore we prove that non-closed Einstein-Weyl product structures only exist in dimension $4$.
