For the purposes of this paper, Dehn surgery along a curve K in a 3-manifold M with slope r is `exceptional' if the resulting 3-manifold M_K(r) is reducible or a solid torus, or the core of the surgery solid torus has finite order in the fundamental group of M_K(r). We show that, providing the exterior of K is irreducible and atoroidal, and the distance between r and the meridian slope is more than one, and a homology condition is satisfied, then there is (up to ambient isotopy) only a finite number of such exceptional surgery curves in a given compact orientable 3-manifold M, with the boundary of M a (possibly empty) union of tori. Moreover, there is a simple algorithm to find all these surgery curves, which involves inserting tangles into the 3-simplices of any given triangulation of M. As a consequence, we deduce some results about the finiteness of certain unknotting operations on knots in the 3-sphere.
A Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is exceptional if it produces a reducible, toroidal or Seifert fibred manifold. It is known that a large arborescent knot admits no such surgery unless it is a type II arborescent knot. The main theorem of this paper shows that up to isotopy there are exactly three large arborescent knots admitting exceptional surgery, each of which admits exactly one exceptional surgery, producing a toroidal manifold.
Concerning the set of exceptional surgery slopes for a hyperbolic knot, Lackenby and Meyerhoff proved that the maximal cardinality is 10 and the maximal diameter is 8. Their proof is computer-aided in part, and both bounds are achieved simultaneously. In this note, it is observed that the diameter bound 8 implies the maximal cardinality bound 10 for exceptional surgery slope sets. This follows from the next known fact: For a hyperbolic knot, there exists a slope on the peripheral torus such that all exceptional surgery slopes have distance at most two from the slope. We also show that, in gene…
The cosmetic surgery conjecture is a longstanding conjecture in 3-manifold theory. We present a theorem about exceptional cosmetic surgery for homology spheres. Along the way we prove that if the surgery is not a small seifert $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-homology sphere or a toroidal irreducible non-Seifert surgery then there is at most one pair of exceptional truly cosmetic slope. We also prove that toroidal truly cosmetic surgeries on integer homology spheres must be integer homology spheres.
This paper concerns the truly or purely cosmetic surgery conjecture. We give a survey on exceptional surgeries and cosmetic surgeries. We prove that the slope of an exceptional truly cosmetic surgery on a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ must be $\pm 1$ and the surgery must be toroidal but not Seifert fibred. As consequence we show that there are no exceptional truly cosmetic surgeries on certain types of hyperbolic knot in $S^3$. We also give some properties of Heegaard Floer correction terms and torsion invariants for exceptional cosmetic surgeries on $S^3$.
We show that any exceptional non-trivial Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic two-bridge knot yields a 3-manifold whose fundamental group is left-orderable. This gives a new supporting evidence for a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson.
We show that any exceptional non-trivial Dehn surgery on a twist knot, except the trefoil, yields a 3-manifold whose fundamental group is left-orderable. This is a generalization of a result of Clay, Lidman and Watson, and also gives a new supporting evidence for a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson.
We consider in this paper the minimally twisted chain link with 5 components in the 3-sphere, and we analyze the Dehn surgeries on it, namely the Dehn fillings on its exterior M5. The 3-manifold M5 is a nicely symmetric hyperbolic one, filling which one gets a wealth of hyperbolic 3-manifolds having 4 or fewer (including 0) cusps. In view of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem it is then natural to face the problem of classifying all the exceptional fillings on M5, namely those yielding non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Here we completely solve this problem, also showing that, thanks to the s…
Let $M$ be an irreducible, compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold whose boundary is a torus. We show that if $M$ is hyperbolic, then it admits at most six finite/cyclic fillings of maximal distance 5. Further, the distance of a finite/cyclic filling to a cyclic filling is at most 2. If $M$ has a non-boundary-parallel, incompressible torus and is not a generalized 1-iterated torus knot complement, then there are at most three finite/cyclic fillings of maximal distance 1. Further, if $M$ has a non-boundary-parallel, incompressible torus and is not a generalized 1- or 2-iterated torus knot com…
Let X be a norm curve in the SL(2,C)-character variety of a knot exterior M. Let t = || b || / || a || be the ratio of the Culler-Shalen norms of two distinct non-zero classes a, b in H_1(\partial M, Z). We demonstrate that either X has exactly two associated strict boundary slopes \pm t, or else there are strict boundary slopes r_1 and r_2 with |r_1| > t and |r_2| < t. As a consequence, we show that there are strict boundary slopes near cyclic, finite, and Seifert slopes. We also prove that the diameter of the set of strict boundary slopes can be bounded below using the Culler-Shalen norm of …
A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.
We survey aspects of classical combinatorial sutured manifold theory and show how they can be adapted to study exceptional Dehn fillings and 2-handle additions. As a consequence we show that if a hyperbolic knot $β$ in a compact, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ has the property that winding number and wrapping number are not equal with respect to a non-trivial class in $H_2(M,\boundary M)$, then, with only a few possible exceptions, every 3-manifold $M'$ obtained by Dehn surgery on $β$ with surgery distance $Δ\geq 2$ will be hyperbolic.
In this paper, we add examples to Goeritz groups, the mapping class groups of given Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. We focus on a Heegaard splitting of genus two of a Seifert manifold whose base orbifold is sphere with three exceptional points of sufficiently complex coefficients, where "sufficiently complex" means that every surgery coefficient p_{l} over q_{l} of each exceptional fiber (in a surgery description) satisfies that q_{l} is congruent to neither +1 or -1 modulo p_{l}.
Myers shows that every compact, connected, orientable $3$--manifold with no $2$--sphere boundary components contains a hyperbolic knot. We use work of Ikeda with an observation of Adams-Reid to show that every $3$--manifold subject to the above conditions contains a hyperbolic knot which admits a non-trivial non-hyperbolic surgery, a toroidal surgery in particular. We conclude with a question and a conjecture about reducible surgeries.
Suppose $K$ is a hyperbolic knot in a solid torus $V$ intersecting a meridian disk $D$ twice. We will show that if $K$ is not the Whitehead knot and the frontier of a regular neighborhood of $K \cup D$ is incompressible in the knot exterior, then $K$ admits at most one exceptional surgery, which must be toroidal. Embedding $V$ in $S^3$ gives infinitely many knots $K_n$ with a slope $r_n$ corresponding to a slope $r$ of $K$ in $V$. If $r$ surgery on $K$ in $V$ is toroidal then either all but at most three $K_n(r_n)$ are toroidal, or they are all reducible or small Seifert fibered with two commo…
Baker showed that 10 of the 12 classes of Berge knots are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. In this article we enumerate all hyperbolic knots in S^3 obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5 chain link that realize the maximal known distances between slopes corresponding to exceptional (lens, lens), (lens, toroidal), (lens, Seifert fibred spaces) pairs. In light of Baker's work, the classification in this paper conjecturally accounts for 'most' hyperbolic knots in S^3 realizing the maximal distance between these exceptional pairs. All examples obtained in our clas…
We propose a new algorithm for Dehn surgery problem, finding exceptional Dehn filling slopes for a given hyperbolic 3-manifold with a torus boundary, using a quantum invariant called "3D index". The invariant is defined using an ideal triangulation of the cusped 3-manifold. We test the algorithm for many examples.
We give a complete description of exceptional surgeries on pretzel knots of type $(-2, p, p)$ with $p \ge 5$. It is known that such a knot admits a unique toroidal surgery yielding a toroidal manifold with a unique incompressible torus. By cutting along the torus, we obtain two connected components, one of which is a twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle. We show that the other is homeomorphic to the one obtained by certain Dehn filling on the magic manifold. On the other hand, we show that all such pretzel knots admit no Seifert fibered surgeries.
For a 3-manifold with torus boundary admitting an appropriate involution, we show that Khovanov homology provides obstructions to certain exceptional Dehn fillings. For example, given a strongly invertible knot in S^3, we give obstructions to lens space surgeries, as well as obstructions to surgeries with finite fundamental group. These obstructions are based on homological width in Khovanov homology, and in the case of finite fundamental group depend on a calculation of the homological width for a family of Montesinos links.
For a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere, at most finitely many Dehn surgeries yield non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As a typical case of such an exceptional surgery, a toroidal surgery is one that yields a closed 3-manifold containing an incompressible torus. The slope corresponding to a toroidal surgery, called a toroidal slope, is known to be integral or half-integral. We show that the distance between two integral toroidal slopes for a hyperbolic knot, except the figure-eight knot, is at most four. Hence any hyperbolic knot admits at most 5 toroidal surgeries.
It has been observed that most manifolds in the Callahan-Hildebrand-Weeks census of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. A full classification of the exceptional surgeries on the 5-chain link has recently been completed. In this article, we provide a complete classification of the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for all cusped hyperbolic surgeries on the minimally twisted 5-chain link, thereby describing the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for most hyperbolic manifolds of small complexity. The classification produces the…
We construct geometric realization for non-exceptional mutation-finite cluster algebras by extending the theory of Fomin and Thurston to skew-symmetrizable case. Cluster variables for these algebras are renormalized lambda lengths on certain hyperbolic orbifolds. We also compute growth rate of these cluster algebras, provide positivity of Laurent expansions of cluster variables, and prove sign-coherence of c-vectors.
We study a symplectic surgery operation we call unchaining, which effectively reduces the second Betti number and the symplectic Kodaira dimension at the same time. Using unchaining, we give novel constructions of symplectic Calabi-Yau surfaces from complex surfaces of general type, as well as from rational and ruled surfaces via the natural inverse of this operation. Combining the unchaining surgery with others, which all correspond to certain monodromy substitutions for Lefschetz pencils, we provide further applications, such as a complete resolution of a conjecture of Stipsicz on the existe…
We present classification results for exceptional Legendrian realisations of torus knots. These are the first results of that kind for non-trivial topological knot types. Enumeration results of Ding-Li-Zhang concerning tight contact structures on certain Seifert fibred manifolds with boundary allow us to place upper bounds on the number of tight contact structures on the complements of torus knots; the classification of exceptional realisations of these torus knots is then achieved by exhibiting sufficiently many realisations in terms of contact surgery diagrams. We also discuss a couple of ge…
We determine the Thurston's geometry possesed by any Seifert fibered conemanifold structure in a Seifert manifold with orbit space $S^2$ and no more than three exceptional fibres, whose singular set, composed by fibres, has at most 3 components which can include exceptional or general fibres (the total number of exceptional and singular fibres is less or equal than three). We also give the method to obtain the holonomy of that structure. We apply these results to three families of Seifert manifolds, namely, spherical, Nil manifolds and manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery in a torus knot $K_{(r,…
Given some type of fibration on a 4-manifold $X$ with a torus regular fiber $T$, we may produce a new 4-manifold $X_T$ by performing torus surgery on $T$. There is a natural way to extend the fibration to $X_T$, but a multiple fiber (non-generic) singularity is introduced. We construct explicit generic fibrations (with only indefinite fold singularities) in a neighborhood of this multiple fiber. As an application this gives explicit constructions of broken Lefschetz fibrations on all elliptic surfaces (e.g. the family $E(n)_{p,q}$). As part of the construction we produce generic fibrations aro…
The main theorem of this paper is a generalisation of well known results about Dehn surgery to the case of attaching handlebodies to a simple 3-manifold. The existence of a finite set of `exceptional' curves on the boundary of the 3-manifold is established. Provided none of these curves is attached to the boundary of a disc in a handlebody, the resulting manifold is shown to be word hyperbolic and `hyperbolike'. We then give constructions of gluing maps satisfying this condition. These take the form of an arbitrary gluing map composed with powers of a suitable homeomorphism of the boundary of …
A 3-manifold is foliar if it supports a codimension-one co-oriented taut foliation. Suppose $M$ is an oriented 3-manifold with connected boundary a torus, and suppose $M$ contains a properly embedded, compact, oriented, surface $R$ with a single boundary component that is Thurston norm minimizing in $H_2(M, \partial M)$. We define a readily recognizable type of sutured manifold decomposition, which for notational reasons we call double-diamond taut, and show that if $R$ admits a double-diamond taut sutured manifold decomposition, then every boundary slope except one is strongly realized by a c…
