We show that there are exactly, up to isomorphisms, seven extremal log Enriques surfaces Z and construct all of them; among them types D_{19} and A_{19} have been shown of certain uniqueness by M. Reid. We also prove that the (degree 3 or 2) canonical covering of each of these seven Z has either X_3 or X_4 as its minimal resolution. Here X_3 (resp. X_4) is the unique K3 surface with Picard number 20 and discriminant 3 (resp. 4), which are called the most algebraic K3 surfaces by Vinberg and have infinite automorphism groups (by Shioda-Inose and Vinberg).
Log Enriques surface is a generalization of K3 and Enriques surface. We will classify all the rational log Enriques surfaces of rank 18 by giving concrete models for the realizable types of these surfaces.
We point out an interesting relation between hypersurface elliptic singularities and log Enriques surfaces: with a few exceptions, every hypersurface elliptic singularity define some klt log Enriques surface $(S,Diff)$. In many cases, the log canonical cover of $(S,Diff)$ is a Du Val K3 surface with ``large'' nonsymplectic automorphism group.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
We investigate when the fundamental group of the smooth part of a K3 surface or Enriques surface with Du Val singularities, is finite. As a corollary we give an effective upper bound for the order of the fundamental group of the smooth part of a certain Fano 3-fold. This result supports Conjecture A below, while Conjecture A (or alternatively the rational connectedness conjecture in [KoMiMo] which is still open when the dimension is at least 4) would imply that every log terminal Fano variety has a finite fundamental group (now a Theorem of S. Takayama).
We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac{1}{4}(1,1)$. The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with $k$ singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type %of dimension $10-k$ associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$. We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function on the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$. As a consequence, th…
We give a complete classification of complex Q-homology projective planes with isolated rational double point singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle. There are 31 types, and each has one-dimensional moduli. In fact, all moduli curves are rational and defined over Q, and we determine all families explicitly using extremal rational elliptic surfaces and Enriques involutions of base change type.
It is shown that the log-canonical threshold of a curve with an isolated singularity is computed by the term ideal of the curve in a suitable system of local parameters at the singularity. The proof uses the Enriques diagram of the singularity and shows that the log-canonical threshold depends only on a non-degenerate path of that diagram.
This paper is a survey about $K3$ surfaces with an automorphism and log rational surfaces, in particular, log del Pezzo surfaces and log Enriques surfaces. It is also a reproduction on my talk at "Mathematical structures of integrable systems and their applications" held at Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences in September 2018.
Let X be a K3 surface with an involution g which has non-empty fixed locus X^g and acts non-trivially on a non-zero holomorphic 2-form. We shall construct all such pairs (X, g) in a canonical way, from some better known double coverings of log del Pezzo surfaces of index at most 2 or rational elliptic surfaces, and construct the only family of each of the three extremal cases where X^g contains 10 (maximum possible) curves. We also classify rational log Enriques surfaces of index 2. Our approach is more geometrical rather than lattice-theoretical (see Nikulin's paper for the latter approach).
We survey some recent progress in the study of algebraic varieties X with log terminal singularities, especially, the uni-ruledness of the smooth locus X^0 of X, the fundamental group of X^0 and the automorphisms group on (smooth or singular) X when dim X = 2. The full automorphism groups of a few interesting types of K3 surfaces are described, mainly by Keum-Kondo. We conjecture that when X is Q-Fano then X^0 has a finite fundamental group, which had been proved if either dim X < 3 or the Fano index is bigger than dim X - 2. We also conjecture that when X is a log Enriques (e.g. a normal K3 o…
We prove that the lengths of extremal rays of log canonical Fano surfaces with Picard number one satisfy the ascending chain condition. This confirms the 2-dimensional case of a conjecture stated by Fujino and Ishitsuka
We give a characterization of toroidal (resp., semi-toric) compactifications due to Ash-Mumford-Rapoport-Tai (resp., Looijenga) as log minimal models and apply it to study weak K-moduli compactifications, giving a different proof to a theorem of Alexeev-Engel. We also discuss towards further generalization, in particular revisit Shah-Sterk compactification of moduli of polarized Enriques surfaces to show compatibility with log K-stability.
We consider $K_X$-negative extremal contractions $f\colon X\to (Z,o)$, where $X$ is an algebraic threefold with only $ε$-log terminal Q-factorial singularities and $(Z,o)$ is a two (resp., one)-dimensional germ. The main result is that $K_X$ is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6-complementary or we have, so called, exceptional case and then the singularity $(Z\in o)$ is bounded (resp., the multiplicity of the central fiber $f^{-1}(o)$ is bounded).
All varieties, extremal contractions, singularities are divided on exceptional and non-exceptional ones. Roughly speaking, there are the infinite families of non-exceptional varieties, extremal contractions or singularities and only the finite number of the types of exceptional ones. This subdivision is well demonstrated by the example of Du Val singularities. There are two infinite series of non-exceptional singularities: $A_n$ and $D_n$ and only three types of exceptional ones: $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$. Also the importance of exceptionality phenomenon follows from the next observation: A). If …
We prove the boundedness theorem for Fano threefolds with log-terminal singularities of any fixed index. This is an improvement of our earlier result, where we required additionally that the variety is Q-factorial, with Picard number 1. The new ideas of the paper include the following. 1. Using Alexeev Minimal Model program with suitable boundary to find horizontal extremal contractions. 2. Using Kollár's effective Base Point Freeness theorem. 3. Using Kawamata's result on the length of extremal curves with suitable boundary to avoid gluing curves in some cases.
