This is a revised version of my paper which appeared in J. Math. Sci. Univ. Tokyo. We prove that for a flipping contraction from a Gorenstein terminal 4-fold, the pull back of a general hyperplane section of the down-stair has only canonical singularities. Based on this fact and using Siu-Kawamata-Nakayama's extension theorem [Si], [Kaw4], [Kaw5] and [Nak2], we prove the existence of the flip of such a flipping contraction. Furthermore we classify such flipping contractions and the flips under some additional assumptions.

VSPs of cubic fourfolds and the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of 14 points on A^6

This paper is concerned with the geometry of the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $14$ points on $\mathbb{A}^6$. This scheme has two components: the smoothable one and an exceptional one. We prove that the latter is smooth and identify the intersection of components as a vector bundle over the Iliev-Ranestad divisor in the space of cubic fourfolds. The ninth secant variety of the triple Veronese reembedding lies inside the Iliev-Ranestad divisor. We point out that this secant variety is set-theoretically a codimension two complete intersection and discuss the degrees of its equations.

Singularities of pluri-fundamental divisors on Gorenstein Fano varieties of coindex $4$

Let $X$ be a Gorenstein canonical Fano variety of coindex $4$ and dimension $n$ with $H$ fundamental divisor. Assume $h^0(X, H) \geq n -2$. We prove that a general element of the linear system $|mH|$ has at worst canonical singularities for any integer $m \geq 1$. When $X$ has terminal singularities and $n \geq 5$, we show that a general element of $|mH|$ has at worst terminal singularities for any integer $m \geq 1$. When $n=4$, we give an example of Gorenstein terminal Fano fourfold $X$ such that a general element of $|H|$ does not have terminal singularities.

Homological flips and homological flops

We introduce a notion of homological flips and homological flops. The former includes the class of all flips between Gorenstein normal varieties; while the latter includes the class of all flops between Cohen-Macaulay normal varieties whose contracted variety is quasi-Gorenstein. Our main theorem shows that certain local cohomology complexes are dual to each other under homological flips/flops. We give some preliminary applications of this duality to relate the derived categories under flip/flop. Further applications are in [Yeu20b].

A Minimal Model Program for $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein varieties

Normality of general elephants on 3-fold terminal flips

We prove that the general elephant $E_{X^+}\in |-K_{X^+}|$ is normal where $X--> X^+$ is a 3-fold terminal flip. Hence $E_{X^+}$ has at worst Du Val singularities. As a corollary, there exists no non-Gorenstein singularity of type $cE/2$, $cD/3$, nor $cAx/4$ on the flipped curve $C^+$.

Lefschetz properties for jacobian rings of cubic fourfolds and other Artinian algebras

In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. On the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers

We study the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers of a projective variety with Gorenstein canonical singularities, which was conjectured by Batyrev. We prove that the $(p,1)$-stringy Hodge numbers are nonnegative, and for threefolds we obtain new results about the stringy Hodge diamond, which hold even when the stringy $E$-function is not a polynomial. We also use the Decomposition Theorem and mixed Hodge theory to prove Batyrev's conjecture for a class of fourfolds.

Quaternary quartic forms and Gorenstein rings

A quaternary quartic form, a quartic form in four variables, is the dual socle generator of an Artinian Gorenstein ring of codimension and regularity 4. We present a classification of quartic forms in terms of rank and powersum decompositions which corresponds to the classification by the Betti tables of the corresponding Artinian Gorenstein rings. Homological mirror symmetry for generalized Greene-Plesser mirrors

We prove Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture for certain mirror pairs arising from Batyrev-Borisov's `dual reflexive Gorenstein cones' construction. In particular we prove HMS for all Greene-Plesser mirror pairs (i.e., Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in quotients of weighted projective spaces).
