Geometric Quantization links holomorphic geometry with real geometry, a relation that is a prototype for the modern development of mirror symmetry. We show how to use this treatment to construct a special basis in every space of conformal blocks. This is a direct generalization of the basis of theta functions with characteristics in every complete linear system on an Abelian variety (see Mumford's "Tata lectures on theta" cite(Mumford)). The same construction generalizes the classical theory of theta functions to vector bundles of higher rank on Abelian varieties and K3 surfaces. We also discuss the geometry behind these constructions.
In the abelian case (the subject of several beautiful books) fixing some combinatorial structure (so called theta structure of level k) one obtains a special basis in the space of sections of canonical polarization powers over the jacobians. These sections can be presented as holomorphic functions on the "abelian Schottky space". This fact provides various applications of these concrete analytic formulas to the integrable systems, classical mechanics and PDE's. Our practical goal is to do the same in the non abelian case that is to give an answer to the Beauville's question. In future we hope …
A linear algebraic group $G$ is represented by the linear space of its algebraic functions $F(G)$ endowed with multiplication and comultiplication which turn it into a Hopf algebra. Supplying $G$ with a Poisson structure, we get a quantized version $F_q(G)$ which has the same linear structure and comultiplication, but deformed multiplication. This paper develops a similar theory for abelian varieties. A description of abelian varieties $A$ in terms of linear algebra data was given by Mumford: $F(G)$ is replaced by the graded ring of theta functions with symmetric automorphy factors, and comult…
Quantum theta functions were introduced by the author in [Ma1]. They are certain elements in the function rings of quantum tori. By definition, they satisfy a version of the classical functional equations involving shifts by the multiplicative periods. This paper shows that for a certain subclass of period lattices (compatible with the quantization form), quantum thetas satisfy an analog of another classical functional equation related to an action of the metaplectic group upon the (half of) the period matrix. In the quantum case, this is replaced by the action of the special orthogonal group …
The paper consists of two sections. The first section provides a new definition of mirror symmetry of abelian varieties making sense also over $p$-adic fields. The second section introduces and studies quantized theta-functions with two-sided multipliers, which are functions on non-commutative tori. This is an extension of an earlier work by the author. In the Introduction and in the Appendix the constructions of this paper are put into a wider context.
A log Calabi--Yau surface $(X,D)$ is given by a smooth projective surface $X$, together with an anti-canonical cycle of rational curves $D \subset X$. The homogeneous coordinate ring of the mirror to such a surface, or to the complement $X\setminus D$, is constructed in the work of Gross-Hacking-Keel, following previous work of Gross-Siebert, using wall structures, and it is generated by theta functions. In our work with Mark Gross we had provided a recipe to concretely compute these theta functions from a combinatorially constructed wall structure in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, we fi…
We address quantization of the natural symplectic structure on a moduli space of parabolic vector bundles of parabolic degree zero over $\mathbf{CP}^1$ with four parabolic points and parabolic weights in {0,1/2}. Identifying such parabolic bundles as vector bundles on an elliptic curve, we obtain explicit expressions for the corresponding non-abelian theta functions. These non-abelian theta functions are described in terms of certain naturally defined distributions on the compact group SU(2).
We show that a large class of maximally degenerating families of n-dimensional polarized varieties come with a canonical basis of sections of powers of the ample line bundle. The families considered are obtained by smoothing a reducible union of toric varieties governed by a wall structure on a real n-(pseudo-)manifold. Wall structures have previously been constructed inductively for cases with locally rigid singularities and by Gromov-Witten theory for mirrors of log Calabi-Yau surfaces and K3 surfaces by various combinations of the authors. For trivial wall structures on the n-torus we retri…
We show that the gradient and the hessian of the Riemann theta function in dimension n can be combined to give a theta function of order n+1 and modular weight (n+5)/2 defined on the theta divisor. It can be seen that the zero locus of this theta function essentially gives the ramification locus of the Gauss map. For jacobians this leads to a description in terms of theta functions and their derivatives of the Weierstrass point locus on the associated Riemann surface.
We prove that the fourth powers of theta functions with even characteristics form a basis of the space of even theta functions of order four on a principally polarized Abelian variety without vanishing theta-null.
The formula of expanding the Abel variety theta function restricted to Abel subvariety into theta functions of this subvariety is obtained. With the help of this formula the solution of differential equations with Jacobi theta functions, restricted on a nonprincipally polarized Abel subvariety and their translations are rewritten in terms of the theta functions of these subvarieties. This is exemplified by the CKP equations, the Bogoyavlenskij system, and the Toda $g_2^{(1)}$-chain.
This is a (short) survey lecture on the "theta map" from the moduli space of SL_r bundles on a curve C to the projective space of r-th order theta functions on JC . Some recent results and a few open problems about that map are discussed.
Let $E$ be a smooth elliptic curve over $\mathbb{C}$. For $E$ embedded into $\mathbb{P}^2$ as Hesse cubic and $V$ an Ulrich bundle on $E$ we derive a explicit presentation of $V$ using Moore matrices and theta functions.
Let G2 be the exceptional Lie group of automorphisms of the complex Cayley algebra and C be a smooth, connected, projective curve of genus at least 2. Using the map obtained from extension of structure groups, we prove explicit links between the space of generalized G2-theta functions over C and spaces of generalized theta functions associated to the classical Lie groups SL_2 and SL_3.
Let M be the moduli space of SO(r)-bundles on a curve, and L the determinant bundle on M. We define an isomorphism of H^0(M,L) onto the dual of the space of r-th order theta functions on the Jacobian of C. This isomorphism identifies the map M -->|L|* defined by the linear system |L| with the map M -->|r Theta| which associates to a quadratic bundle (E,q) the Theta divisor of the vector bundle E . The two components M+ and M- of M are mapped into the subspaces of even and odd theta functions respectively. Finally we discuss the analogous question for Sp(2r)-bundles.
This paper generalizes for non-abelian theta functions a number of formulae valid for theta functions of Jacobian varieties. The addition formula, the relation with the Szego kernel and with the multicomponent KP hierarchy and the behavior under cyclic coverings are given.
We show that the space of theta functions on tropical tori is identified with a convex polyhedron. We also show a Riemann-Roch inequality for tropical abelian surfaces by calculating the self-intersection numbers of divisors.
Let C be a curve of genus g, and let SU(r) be the moduli space of vector bundles of rank r on C, with trivial determinant. A general E in SU(r) defines a theta divisor in the linear system |r Theta|, where Theta is the canonical theta divisor in Pic^{g-1}(C). This defines a rational map SU(r) - - > |r Theta|, which is the map associated to the determinant bundle on SU(r) (the positive generator of Pic(SU(r)). In this paper we prove that in genus 2 this map is generically finite and dominant. The same method, together with some classical work of Morin, shows that in rank 3 and genus 3 the theta…
We introduce an generalization of the theta divisor to the theory of holomorphic triples on a smooth projective curve $X$. We show that a given triple $T=(E_1 \to E_0)$ is $α$-semistable iff there exists an orthogonal tripe $S=(F_1 \to F_0)$ with given numerical invariants. This yields globally generated theta line bundles on the moduli space of semistable triples.
We prove canonical isomorphisms between Spin Verlinde spaces, i.e, spaces of global sections of a determinant line bundle over the moduli space of semistable Spin-bundles over a smooth projective curve C, and the dual spaces of theta functions over Prym varieties of unramified double covers of C.
This paper outlines an approach to the non-abelian theta functions of the $SU(2)$-Chern-Simons theory with the methods used by A. Weil for studying classical theta functions. First we translate in knot theoretic language classical theta functions, the action of the finite Heisenberg group, and the discrete Fourier transform. Then we explain how the non-abelian counterparts of these arise in the framework of the quantum group quantization of the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$-connections on a surface, in the guise of the non-abelian theta functions, the action of a skein algebra, and the Reshetik…
We define a tropicalization procedure for theta functions on abelian varieties over a non-Archimedean field. We show that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean theta function is a tropical theta function, and that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean Riemann theta function is a tropical Riemann theta function, up to scaling and an additive constant. We apply these results to the construction of rational functions with prescribed behavior on the skeleton of a principally polarized abelian variety. We work with the Raynaud--Bosch--Lütkebohmert theory of non-Archimedean theta functions for…
In this short survey we give a description of the theta functions of algebraic curves, half-integer theta-nulls, and the fundamental theta functions. We describe how to determine such fundamental theta functions and describe the components of the moduli space in terms of such functions.
We give an algebraic analog of the functional equation of Riemann's theta function. More precisely, we define a `theta multiplier' line bundle over the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian schemes with theta characteristic and prove that its dual is isomorphic to the determinant bundle over the moduli stack. We do so by explicitly computing with Picard groups over the moduli stack. This is all done over the ring R=Z[1/2,i]: passing to the complex numbers, we recover the classical functional equation.
We study Jacobian varieties for tropical curves. These are real tori equipped with integral affine structure and symmetric bilinear form. We define tropical counterpart of the theta function and establish tropical versions of the Abel-Jacobi, Riemann-Roch and Riemann theta divisor theorems.
Theta functions of level n on the principally polarised Prym varieties of an algebraic curve are dual to sections of the orthogonal theta line bundle on the moduli space of Spin(n)-bundles over the curve. As a by-product of our computations we also note that when n is odd the pfaffian line bundle on moduli space has a basis of sections labelled by the even theta characteristics of the curve.
We describe a parametrization of the box variety (variety of cuboids) by theta functions. This will imply that the box variety is a modular variety. Actually this parametrization can be defined over the Gauss number field.
In this paper, we give an overview of our previous paper concerning the investigation of the algebraic and $p$-adic properties of Eisenstein-Kronecker numbers using Mumford's theory of algebraic theta functions.
This is a survey covering aspects of varied work of the authors with Mohammed Abouzaid, Paul Hacking, and Sean Keel. While theta functions are traditionally canonical sections of ample line bundles on abelian varieties, we motivate, using mirror symmetry, the idea that theta functions exist in much greater generality. This suggestion originates with the work of the late Andrei Tyurin. We outline how to construct theta functions on the degenerations of varieties constructed in previous work of the authors, and then explain applications of this construction to homological mirror symmetry and con…
As a noncommutative generalization of the addition formula of theta functions, we construct a class of theta functions which are closed with respect to the Moyal star product of a fixed noncommutative parameter. These theta functions can be regarded as bases of the space of holomorphic homomorphisms between holomorphic line bundles over noncommutative complex tori.
We prove that the logarithm of an arbitrary tau-function of the KdV hierarchy can be approximated, in the topology of graded formal series by the logarithmic expansions of hyperelliptic theta-functions of finite genus, up to at most quadratic terms. As an example we consider theta-functional approximations of the Witten--Kontsevich tau-function.
We present a new package Theta.jl for computing with the Riemann theta function. It is implemented in Julia and offers accurate numerical evaluation of theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives of arbitrary order. Our package is optimized for multiple evaluations of theta functions for the same Riemann matrix, in small dimensions. As an application, we report on experimental approaches to the Schottky problem in genus five.
In this paper we classify the singular curves whose theta divisors in their generalized Jacobians are algebraic, meaning that they are cut out by polynomial analogs of theta functions. We also determine the degree of an algebraic theta divisor in terms of the singularities of the curve. Furthermore, we show a precise relation between such algebraic theta functions and the corresponding tau functions for the KP hierarchy.
