We introduce linear holonomy on Poisson manifolds. The linear holonomy of a Poisson structure generalizes the linearized holonomy on a regular symplectic foliation. However, for singular Poisson structures the linear holonomy is defined for the lifts of tangential path to the cotangent bundle (cotangent paths). The linear holonomy is closely related to the modular class studied by A. Weinstein. Namely, the logarithm of the determinant of the linear holonomy is equal to the integral of the modular vector field along such a lift. This assertion relies on the notion of the integral of a vector field along a cotangent path on a Poisson manifold, which is also introduced in the paper.
In the second part of the paper we prove that for locally unimodular Poisson manifolds the modular class is an invariant of Morita equivalence.
We discuss contravariant connections on Poisson manifolds. For vector bundles, the corresponding operational notion of a contravariant derivative had been introduced by Izu Vaisman. We show that these connections play an important role in the study of global properties of Poisson manifolds and we use them to define Poisson holonomy and new invariants of Poisson manifolds.
We look at Poisson geometry taking the viewpoint of singular foliations, understood as suitable submodules generated by Hamiltonian vector fields rather than partitions into (symplectic) leaves. The class of Poisson structures which behave best from this point of view, are those whose submodule generated by Hamiltonian vector fields arises from a smooth holonomy groupoid. We call them almost regular Poisson structures and determine them completely. They include regular Poisson and log symplectic manifolds, as well as several other Poisson structures whose symplectic foliation presents singular…
We introduce the modular class of a Poisson map. We look at several examples and we use the modular classes of Poisson maps to study the behavior of the modular class of a Poisson manifold under different kinds of reduction. We also discuss their symplectic groupoid version, which lives in groupoid cohomology.
We show that, for any regular Poisson manifold, there is an injective natural linear map from the first leafwise cohomology space into the first Poisson cohomology space which maps the Reeb class of the symplectic foliation to the modular class of the Poisson manifold. The Riemannian interpretation of those classes will permit us to show that a regular Poisson manifold whose symplectic foliation is of codimension one is unimodular if and only if its symplectic foliation is Riemannian foliation. It permit us also to construct examples of unimodular Poisson manifolds and other which are not unim…
We study the behavior of the modular class of an orientable Poisson manifold and formulate some unimodularity criteria in the semilocal context, around a (singular) symplectic leaf. Our results generalize some known unimodularity criteria for regular Poisson manifolds related to the notion of the Reeb class. In particular, we show that the unimodularity of the transverse Poisson structure of the leaf is a necessary condition for the semilocal unimodular property. Our main tool is an explicit formula for a bigraded decomposition of modular vector fields of a coupling Poisson structure on a foli…
Let $G$ be a connected Lie group and $\mathfrak{g}$ its Lie algebra. We denote by $\nabla^0$ the torsion free bi-invariant linear connection on $G$ given by $\nabla^0_XY=\frac12[X,Y],$ for any left invariant vector fields $X,Y$. A Poisson structure on $\mathfrak{g}$ is a commutative and associative product on $\mathfrak{g}$ for which $\mathrm{ad}_u$ is a derivation, for any $u\in\mathfrak{g}$. A torsion free bi-invariant linear connections on $G$ which have the same curvature as $\nabla^0$ is called special. We show that there is a bijection between the space of special connections on $G$ and …
The modular vector field of a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid $A$ is defined and we prove that, in case of non-degeneracy, this vector field defines a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian $A$-vector fields. This hierarchy covers an integrable hierarchy on the base manifold, which may not have a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure.
We study the ``twisted" Poincaré duality of smooth Poisson manifolds, and show that, if the modular vector field is diagonalizable, then there is a mixed complex associated to the Poisson complex, which, combining with the twisted Poincaré duality, gives a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the Poisson cohomology. This generalizes the previous results obtained by Xu for unimodular Poisson manifolds. We also show that the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure is preserved under Kontsevich's deformation quantization, and in the case of polynomial algebras it is also preserved by Koszul duali…
In this paper we study the modular classes of Dirac manifolds and of Dirac maps, and we discuss their basic properties. We apply these results to explain the relationship between the modular classes of the various structures involved in the reduction of a Poisson manifold under the action by of a Poisson Lie group.
Jacobi-Nijenhuis algebroids are defined as a natural generalization of Poisson-Nijenhuis algebroids, in the case where there exists a Nijenhuis operator on a Jacobi algebroid which is compatible with it. We study modular classes of Jacobi and Jacobi-Nijenhuis algebroids.
We introduce the notion of the modular class of a Lie algebroid equipped with a Nambu structure. In particular, we recover the modular class of a Nambu-Poisson manifold $M$ with its Nambu tensor $Λ$ as the modular class of the tangent Lie algebroid $TM$ with Nambu structure $Λ.$ We show that many known properties of the modular class of a Nambu-Poisson manifold that of a Lie algebropid extend to the setting of a Lie algebroid with Nambu structure. Finally, we prove that for a large class of Nambu-Poisson manifolds considered as tangent Lie algebroids with Nambu structures, the associated modul…
Skew algebroid is a natural generalization of the concept of Lie algebroid. In this paper, for a skew algebroid E, its modular class mod(E) is defined in the classical as well as in the supergeometric formulation. It is proved that there is a homogeneous nowhere-vanishing 1-density on E* which is invariant with respect to all Hamiltonian vector fields if and only if E is modular, i.e. mod(E)=0. Further, relative modular class of a subalgebroid is introduced and studied together with its application to holonomy, as well as modular class of a skew algebroid relation. These notions provide, in pa…
Let X(Σ) be a smooth projective toric variety for a complex torus T_\C. In this paper, a real T_\C-invariant Poisson structure Π_Σis constructed on the complex manifold X(Σ), the symplectic leaves of which are the T_\C-orbits in X(Σ). It is shown that each leaf admits a Hamiltonian action by a sub-torus of the compact torus T\subset T_\C. However, the global action of T_\C on (X(Σ),Π_Σ) is Poisson but not Hamiltonian. The main result of the paper is a lower bound for the first Poisson cohomology of these structures. For the simplest case, X(Σ)=\CP^1, the Poisson cohomology is computed using a …
We give a comparative description of the Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of flat connections on real surfaces and holomorphic Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of holomorphic bundles on complex surfaces. The symplectic leaves of the latter are classified by restrictions of the bundles to certain divisors. This can be regarded as fixing a "complex analogue of the holonomy" of a connection along a "complex analogue of the boundary" in analogy with the real case.
The modular vector field plays an important role in the theory of Poisson manifolds and is intimately connected with the Poisson cohomology of the space. In this paper we investigate its significance in the theory of integrable systems. We illustrate in detail the case of the Toda lattice both in Flaschka and natural coordinates.
We present a graded-geometric approach to modular classes of Lie algebroids and their generalizations, introducing in this setting an idea of relative modular class of a Dirac structure for a certain type of Courant algebroids, called projectable. This novel approach puts several concepts related to Poisson geometry and its generalizations in a new light and simplifies proofs. It gives, in particular, a nice geometric interpretation of modular classes of twisted-Poisson structures on Lie algebroids.
We connect Poisson and near-symplectic geometry by showing that there is a singular Poisson structure on a near-symplectic 4-manifold. The Poisson structure $π$ is defined on the tubular neighbourhood of the singular locus $Z_ω$ of the 2-form $ω$, it is of maximal rank 4 and it vanishes on a degeneracy set containing $Z_ω$. We compute its smooth Poisson cohomology, which depends on the modular vector field and it is finite dimensional. We conclude with a discussion on the relation between the Poisson structure $π$ and the overtwisted contact structure associated to a near-symplectic 4-manifold…
A Q-manifold is a supermanifold equipped with an odd vector field that squares to zero. The notion of the modular class of a Q-manifold -- which is viewed as the obstruction to the existence of a Q-invariant Berezin volume -- is not well know. We review the basic ideas and then apply this technology to various examples, including $L_{\infty}$-algebroids and higher Poisson manifolds.
The purpose of this paper is to establish an explicit correspondence between various geometric structures on a vector bundle with some well-known algebraic structures such as Gerstenhaber algebras and BV-algebras. Some applications are discussed. In particular, we found an explicit connection between the Koszul-Brylinski operator of a Poisson manifold and its modular class. As a consequence, we prove that Poisson homology is isomorphic to Poisson cohomology for unimodular Poisson structures.
We extend the problem of finding Hamiltonian-invariant volume forms on a Poisson manifold to the problem of construction of Hamiltonian-invariant generalized functions. For this we introduce the notion of generalized center of a Poisson algebra, which is the space of generalized Casimir functions. We study as the case when the set of test-objects for generalized functions is the space of compactly supported smooth functions, so the case when the test-objects are n-forms, where n is the dimension of the Poisson manifold. We describe the relations of this problem with the homological properties …
In this letter, first we give a decomposition for any Lie-Poisson structure $π_g$ associated to the modular vector. In particular, $π_g$ splits into two compatible Lie-Poisson structures if $dim{g} \leq 3$. As an application, we classified quadratic deformations of Lie-Poisson structures on $\mathbb R^3$ up to linear diffeomorphisms.
In the present paper, we study complete and vertical lifts of tensor fields from a smooth manifold $M$ to its Weil bundle $T^A M$ defined by a Frobenius Weil algebra $A$. For a Poisson manifold $(M,w)$, we show that the complete lift $w^C$ and the vertical lift $w^V$ of the Poisson tensor $w$ are Poisson tensors on $T^A M$ and establish their properties. We prove that the complete and the vertical lifts induce homomorphisms of the Poisson cohomology spaces. We compute the modular classes of the lifts of Poisson structures.
Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, with Lie algebra $g$, and $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ a principal $G$-bundle. In earlier work we have shown that the moduli space $N(ξ)$ of central Yang- Mills connections, for appropriate additional data, is stratified by smooth symplectic manifolds and that the holonomy yields a diffeomorphism from $N(ξ)$ onto a certain representation space $\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G)$, with reference to suitable smooth structures $C^{\infty}(N(ξ))$ and $C^{\infty}(\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G))$ where $Γ$ denotes the universal central extension of the fundamental group of $Σ$. Given…
We introduce a notion of duality for a Lie-Rinehart algebra giving certain bilinear pairings in its cohomology generalizing the usual notions of Poincaré duality in Lie algebra cohomology and de Rham cohomology. We show that the duality isomorphisms can be given by a cap product with a suitable fundamental class and hence may be taken natural in any reasonable sense. Thereafter, for a Lie-Rinehart algebra satisfying duality, we introduce a certain intrinsic module which provides a crucial ingredient for the construction of the bilinear pairings. This module determines a certain class, called m…
We observe that the modular class of a Poisson-Nijhenhuis manifold has a canonical representative and that, under a cohomological assumption, this vector field is bi-hamiltonian. In many examples the associated hierarchy of flows reproduces classical integrable hierarchies.
We show that every Lie algebroid $A$ over a manifold $P$ has a natural representation on the line bundle $Q_A = \wedge^{top}A \otimes \wedge^{top} T^*P$. The line bundle $Q_A$ may be viewed as the Lie algebroid analog of the orientation bundle in topology, and sections of $Q_A$ may be viewed as transverse measures to $A$. As a consequence, there is a well-defined class in the first Lie algebroid cohomology $H^1(A)$ called the modular class of the Lie algebroid $A$. This is the same as the one introduced earlier by Weinstein using the Poisson structure on $A^*$. We show that there is a natural …
We consider odd Laplace operators acting on densities of various weight on an odd Poisson (= Schouten) manifold $M$. We prove that the case of densities of weight 1/2 (half-densities) is distinguished by the existence of a unique odd Laplace operator depending only on a point of an ``orbit space'' of volume forms. This includes earlier results for odd symplectic case, where there is a canonical odd Laplacian on half-densities. The space of volume forms on $M$ is partitioned into orbits by a natural groupoid whose arrows correspond to the solutions of the quantum Batalin--Vilkovisky equations. …
A second order self-adjoint operator $Δ=S\partial^2+U$ is uniquely defined by its principal symbol $S$ and potential $U$ if it acts on half-densities. We analyse the potential $U$ as a compensating field (gauge field) in the sense that it compensates the action of coordinate transformations on the second derivatives in the same way as an affine connection compensates the action of coordinate transformations on first derivatives in the first order operator, a covariant derivative, $\nabla=\partial+Γ$. Usually a potential $U$ is derived from other geometrical constructions such as a volume form,…
