If a class of finitely generated groups Curly(G) is closed under isometric amalgamations along free subgroups, then every G in Curly(G) can be quasi-isometrically embedded in a group Hat(G) in Curly(G) that has no proper subgroups of finite index.
Every compact, connected, non-positively curved space X admits an isometric embedding into a compact, connected, non-positively curved space Overline(X) such that Overline(X) has no non-trivial finite-sheeted coverings.
We prove that the smallest non-trivial quotient of the mapping class group of a connected orientable surface of genus at least 3 without punctures is $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(2)$, thus confirming a conjecture of Zimmermann. In the process, we generalise Korkmaz's results on $\mathbb{C}$-linear representations of mapping class groups to projective representations over any field.
We prove that the smallest non-trivial quotients of the commutator subgroups of the braid groups are the alternating groups, proving a conjecture of Chudnovsky-Kordek-Li-Partin. Furthermore, we show that any minimal quotient map is the standard projection, composed with an automorphism of the alternating group.
In the first part of this paper we prove that the mapping class subgroups generated by the $D$-th powers of Dehn twists (with $D\geq 2$) along a sparse collection of simple closed curves on an orientable surface are right angled Artin groups. The second part is devoted to power quotients, i.e. quotients by the normal subgroup generated by the $D$-th powers of all elements of the mapping class groups. We show first that for infinitely many $D$ the power quotient groups are non-trivial. On the other hand, if $4g+2$ does not divide $D$ then the associated power quotient of the mapping class group…
To every $Q$-irreducible representation $r$ of a finite group $H$, there corresponds a simple factor $A$ of $Q[H]$ with an involution $τ$. To this pair $(A,τ)$, we associate an arithmetic group $Ω$ consisting of all $(2g-2)\times (2g-2)$ matrices over a natural order of $A^{op}$ which preserve a natural skew-Hermitian sesquilinear form on $A^{2g-2}$. We show that if $H$ is generated by less than $g$ elements, then $Ω$ is a virtual quotient of the mapping class group $Mod(Σ_g)$, i.e. a finite index subgroup of $Ω$ is a quotient of a finite index subgroup of $\Mod(Σ_g)$. This shows that the mapp…
It was previously shown by Grunewald and Lubotzky that the automorphism group of a free group, $\text{Aut}(F_n)$, has a large collection of virtual arithmetic quotients. Analogous results were proved for the mapping class group by Looijenga and by Grunewald, Larsen, Lubotzky, and Malestein. In this paper, we prove analogous results for the automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group for a large collection of defining graphs. As a corollary of our methods we produce new virtual arithmetic quotients of $\text{Aut}(F_n)$ for $n \geq 4$ where $k$th powers of all transvections act trivially fo…
This paper describes some generalizations of the results presented in the book "Geometry of defining Relations in Groups" , of A.Yu.Ol'shanskii to the case of non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic groups. In particular, it is proved that for every non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic group, there exists a non-Abelian torsion-free quotient group in which all proper subgroups are cyclic, and the intersection of any two of them is not trivial.
The Bogomolov multiplier of a group is the unramified Brauer group associated to the quotient variety of a faithful representation of the group. This object is an obstruction for the quotient variety to be stably rational. The purpose of this paper is to study these multipliers associated to nilpotent pro-$p$ groups by transporting them to their associated Lie algebras. Special focus is set on the case of $p$-adic Lie groups of nilpotency class $2$, where we analyse the moduli space. This is then applied to give information on asymptotic behaviour of multipliers of finite images of such groups…
More than 70 years ago, P. Hall showed that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group such that a term $\der G{d+1}$ of the derived series is non-trivial, then the order of the quotient $\der Gd/\der G{d+1}$ is at least $p^{2^d+1}$. Recently Mann proved that, in a finite $p$-group, Hall's lower bound can be taken for at most two distinct $d$. We improve this result and show that if $p$ is odd, then it can only be taken for two distinct $d$ in a group with order $p^6$.
Let $\C(Γ)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of the finite groups that are homomorphic images of $Γ$. We investigate the extent to which $\C(Γ)$ determines $Γ$ when $Γ$ is a group of geometric interest. If $Γ_1$ is a lattice in ${\rm{PSL}}(2,\R)$ and $Γ_2$ is a lattice in any connected Lie group, then $\C(Γ_1) = \C(Γ_2)$ implies that $Γ_1$ is isomorphic to $Γ_2$. If $F$ is a free group and $Γ$ is a right-angled Artin group or a residually free group (with one extra condition), then $\C(F)=\C(Γ)$ implies that $F\congΓ$. If $Γ_1<{\rm{PSL}}(2,\Bbb C)$ and $Γ_2< G$ are non-uniform arithmetic latt…
We prove that in various natural models of a random quotient of a group, depending on a density parameter, for each hyperbolic group there is some critical density under which a random quotient is still hyperbolic with high probability, whereas above this critical value a random quotient is very probably trivial. We give explicit characterizations of these critical densities for the various models.
We show that the smallest non-abelian quotient of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ is $\mathrm{PSL}_n(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}) = \mathrm{L}_n(2)$, thus confirming a conjecture of Mecchia--Zimmermann. In the course of the proof we give an exponential (in $n$) lower bound for the cardinality of a set on which $\mathrm{SAut}(F_n)$, the unique index $2$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$, can act non-trivially. We also offer new results on the representation theory of $\mathrm{SAut(F_n)}$ in small dimensions over small, positive characteristics, and on rigidity of maps from $\mathrm{SAut}(F_n)$ to finite groups of…
We first give a short group theoretic proof of the following result of Lackenby. If $G$ is a large group, $H$ is a finite index subgroup of $G$ admitting an epimorphism onto a non--cyclic free group, and $g$ is an element of $H$, then the quotient of $G$ by the normal subgroup generated by $g^n$ is large for all but finitely many $n\in \mathbb Z$. In the second part of this note we use similar methods to show that for every infinite sequence of primes $(p_1, p_2, ...)$, there exists an infinite finitely generated periodic group $Q$ with descending normal series $Q=Q_0\rhd Q_1\rhd ... $, such t…
Let $G$ be a central product of two groups $H$ and $K$. We study second cohomology group of $G$, having coefficients in a divisible abelian group $D$ with trivial $G$-action, in terms of the second cohomology groups of certain quotients of $H$ and $K$. In particular, for $D = \mathbb{C}^{*}$, some of our results provide a refinement of results from [Some groups with non-trivial multiplicators, Math. Z. {\bf 120 } (1971), 307-308] and [On the Schur multiplicator of a central quotient of a direct product of groups, J. Pure Appl. Algebra {\bf 3} (1973), 73-82].
In this article we give a sufficient and necessary condition to determine wether or not an element of the free group induces a non-trivial element of the free Burnside group of sufficiently large odd exponent. This criterion can be stated without any knowledge about Burnside groups, in particular about the proof of its infiniteness. Therefore it provides a useful tool that we will use later to study outer automorphisms of Burnside groups. We also state an analogue result for periodic quotients of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.
Baer characterized capable finite abelian groups (a group is capable if it is isomorphic to the quotient of some group by its center) by a condition on the size of the factors in the invariant factor decomposition (the group must be noncyclic and the top two invariant factors must be equal). We provide a different characterization, given in terms of a condition on the lattice of subgroups. Namely, a finite abelian group G is capable if and only if there exists a family {H_i} of subgroups of G with trivial intersection, such that the union generates G and all the quotients G/H_i have the same e…
In this paper we consider connected locally $G$-arc-transitive graphs with vertices of valence 3 and 4, such that the kernel $G_{uv}^{[1]}$ of the action of an edge-stabiliser on the neighourhood $Γ(u) \cup Γ(v)$ is trivial. We find nineteen finitely presented groups with the property that any such group $G$ is a quotient of one of these groups. As an application, we enumerate all connected locally arc-transitive graphs of valence ${3,4}$ on at most 350 vertices whose automorphism group contains a locally arc-transitive subgroup $G$ with $G_{uv}^{[1]} = 1$.
We consider the structure of finite $p$-groups $G$ having precisely three characteristic subgroups, namely $1$, $Φ(G)$ and $G$. The structure of $G$ varies markedly depending on whether $G$ has exponent $p$ or $p^2$, and, in both cases, the study of such groups raises deep problems in representation theory. We present classification theorems for 3- and 4-generator groups, and we also study the existence of such $r$-generator groups with exponent $p^2$ for various values of $r$. The automorphism group induced on the Frattini quotient is, in various cases, related to a maximal linear group in As…
Let $X$ be a complex Calabi-Yau variety, that is, a complex projective variety with canonical singularities whose canonical class is numerically trivial. Let $G$ be a finite group acting on $X$ and consider the quotient variety $X/G$. The aim of this paper is to determine the place of $X/G$ in the birational classification of varieties. That is, we determine the Kodaira dimension of $X/G$ and decide when it is uniruled or rationally connected. If $G$ acts without fixed points, then $κ(X/G)=κ(X)=0$; thus the interesting case is when $G$ has fixed points. We answer the above questions in terms o…
The Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(2,3)$, is a so-called non-Hopfian group, meaning that it has an epimorphism $ϕ$ onto itself, that is not injective. In particular this is equivalent to saying that $BS(2,3)$ has a non-trivial quotient that is isomorphic to itself. As a consequence the Cayley graph of $BS(2,3)$ has a quotient that is isomorphic to itself up to change of generators. We describe this quotient on the graph-level and take a closer look at the most common epimorphism $ϕ$. We show its kernel is a free group of infinite rank with an explicit set of generators. Finally we show how $ϕ$ app…
A study is carried out of the elementary theory of quotients of symmetric groups in a similar spirit to [Sh:24]. Apart from the trivial and alternating subgroups, the normal subgroups of the full symmetric group S(mu) on an infinite cardinal mu are all of the form S_kappa(mu)= the subgroup consisting of elements whose support has cardinality <kappa for some kappa <= mu^+. A many-sorted structure M_{kappa lambda mu} is defined which, it is shown, encapsulates the first order properties of the group S_lambda (mu)/S_kappa (mu). Specifically, these two structures are (uniformly) bi-interpretable, …
