A survey is given of the work on strong regularity for uniform algebras over the last thirty years, and some new results are proved, including the following. Let A be a uniform algebra on a compact space X and let E be the set of all those points x of X such that A is not strongly regular at x. If E has no non-empty, perfect subsets then A is normal, and X is the character space of A. If X is either the interval or the circle and E is meagre with no non-empty, perfect subsets then A is trivial. These results extend Wilken's work from 1969. It is also shown that every separable Banach function algebra which has character space equal to either the interval or the circle and which has a countably-generated ideal lattice is uniformly dense in the algebra of all continuous functions.
We give a survey of the known connections between regularity conditions and amenability conditions in the setting of uniform algebras. For a uniform algebra $A$ we consider the set, $A_{lc}$, of functions in $A$ which are locally constant on a (varying) dense open subset of the character space of $A$. We show that, for a separable uniform algebra $A$, if $A$ has bounded relative units at every point of a dense subset of the character space of $A$, then $A_{lc}$ is dense in $A$. We construct a separable, essential, regular uniform algebra $A$ on its character space $X$ such that every point of …
We consider several notions of regularity, including strong regularity, bounded relative units, and Ditkin's condition, in the setting of vector-valued function algebras. Given a commutative Banach algebra $A$ and a compact space $X$, let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Banach $A$-valued function algebra on $X$ and let $\mathfrak{A}$ be the subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$ consisting of scalar-valued functions. This paper is about the connection between regularity conditions of the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and the associated algebras $\mathfrak{A}$ and $A$. That $\mathcal{A}$ inherits a certain regularity conditio…
We show that there are no nontrivial surjective uniformly asymptotically regular mappings acting on a metric space and derive some consequences of this fact. In particular, we prove that a jointly continuous left amenable or left reversible semigroup generated by firmly nonexpansive mappings on a bounded $τ$-compact subset of a Banach space has a common fixed point, and give a qualitative complement to the Markov-Kakutani theorem.
It is known that every countable semigroup admits a weight w for which the semigroup algebra l_1(S,w) is Arens regular and no uncountable group admits such a weight; see [4]. In this paper, among other things, we show that for a large class of semigroups, the Arens regularity of the weighted semigroup algebra l_1(S,w) implies the countability of S.
In This paper, we study the concept of weakly almost periodic functions on Frechet algebras. For a Frechet algebra A, we show that WAP(A)=wap(A). We also show that A** is Arens regular if and only if both A and WAP(A)* are Arens regular. Finally, for a sequence of Frechet algebras (An), we prove that the Frechet algebra \ell^1-\prod An is Arens regular if and only if each An is Arens regular.
In this note we introduce the notion of $t$-analytic sets. Using this concept, we construct a class of closed prime ideals in Banach function algebras and discuss some problems related to Alling's conjecture in $H^\infty$. A description of all closed $t$-analytic sets for the disk-algebra is given. Moreover, we show that some of the assertions in Daoui et al. (Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 131:3211-3220, 2003) concerning the $O$-analyticity and $S$-regularity of certain Banach function algebras are not correct. We also determine the largest set on which a Douglas algebra is pointwise regular.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, $A_p (G)$ be the Herz algebra of $G$ associated with $1 <p< \infty$. We show that $A_p (G)$ is Arens regular if and only if $G$ is a discrete group and for each countable subgroup $H$ of $G$, $A_p (H)$ is Arens regular. In the case $G$ is a countable discrete group we investigate the relations between Arens regularity of $A_p (G)$ and the iterated limit condition. We consider the problem of Arens regularity of $l^1 (G)$ as a subspace of $A_p (G)$. A few related results when the unit ball of $(l^1 (G),.,A_p(G))$ is bounded under $\|.\|_1$-norm are also determ…
Regularity theory in generalized function algebras of Colombeau type is largely based on the notion of ${\mathcal G}^\infty$-regularity, which reduces to $C^\infty$-regularity when restricted to Schwartz distributions. Surprisingly, in the nonstandard version of the Colombeau algebras, this basic property of ${\mathcal G}^\infty$-regularity does not hold.
We analyze a proof of Bruck to obtain an explicit rate of asymptotic regularity for Cesàro means in uniformly convex Banach spaces. Our rate will only depend on a norm bound and a modulus $η$ of uniform convexity. One ingredient for the proof by Bruck is a result of Pisier, which shows that every uniformly convex (in fact every uniformly nonsquare) Banach space has some Rademacher type $q>1$ with a suitable constant $C_q$. We explicitly determine $q$ and $C_q$, which only depend on the single value $η(1)$ of our modulus. Beyond these specific results, we summarize how work of Bruck has inspire…
As is well-know, on an Arens regular Banach algebra all continuous functionals are weakly almost periodic. In this paper we show that $\ell^1$-bases which approximate upper and lower triangles of products of elements in the algebra produce large sets of functionals that are not weakly almost periodic. This leads to criteria for extreme non-Arens regularity of Banach algebras in the sense of Granirer. We find in particular that bounded approximate identities (bai's) and bounded nets converging to invariance (TI-nets) both fall into this approach, suggesting that this is indeed the main tool beh…
In this paper we apply methods of proof mining to obtain a uniform effective rate of asymptotic regularity for the Mann iteration associated to $κ$-strict pseudo-contractions on convex subsets of Hilbert spaces.
