Brownian motions in the infinite-dimensional group of all unitary operators are studied under strong continuity assumption rather than norm continuity. Every such motion can be described in terms of a countable collection of independent one-dimensional Brownian motions. The proof involves continuous tensor products and continuous quantum measurements. A by-product: a Brownian motion in a separable F-space (not locally convex) is a Gaussian process.
In this paper, we introduce and study a unitary matrix-valued process which is closely related to the Hermitian matrix-Jacobi process. It is precisely defined as the product of a deterministic self-adjoint symmetry and a randomly-rotated one by a unitary Brownian motion. Using stochastic calculus and the action of the symmetric group on tensor powers, we derive an autonomous ordinary differential equation for the moments of its fixed-time marginals. Next, we derive an expression of these moments which involves a unitary bridge between our unitary process and another independent unitary Brownia…
We establish high probability estimates on the eigenvalue locations of Brownian motion on the $N$-dimensional unitary group, as well as estimates on the number of eigenvalues lying in any interval on the unit circle. These estimates are optimal up to arbitrarily small polynomial factors in $N$. Our results hold at the spectral edges (showing that the extremal eigenvalues are within $\mathcal{O} (N^{-2/3+})$ of the edges of the limiting spectral measure), in the spectral bulk, as well as for times near $4$ at which point the limiting spectral measure forms a cusp. Our methods are dynamical and …
Let $\{U^N_t\}_{t\ge 0}$ be a standard Brownian motion on $\mathbb{U}(N)$. For fixed $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and $t>0$, we give explicit bounds on the $L_1$-Wasserstein distance of the empirical spectral measure of $U^N_t$ to both the ensemble-averaged spectral measure and to the large-$N$ limiting measure identified by Biane. We are then able to use these bounds to control the rate of convergence of paths of the measures on compact time intervals. The proofs use tools developed by the first author to study convergence rates of the classical random matrix ensembles, as well as recent estimates for th…
We study several matrix diffusion processes constructed from a unitary Brownian motion. In particular, we use the Stiefel fibration to lift the Brownian motion of the complex Grassmannian to the complex Stiefel manifold and deduce a skew-product decomposition of the Stiefel Brownian motion. As an application, we prove asymptotic laws for the determinants of the block entries of the unitary Brownian motion.
This paper is devoted to the computations of some relevant quantities associated with the free unitary Brownian motion. Using the Lagrange inversion formula, we first derive an explicit expression for its alternating star cumulants of even lengths and relate them to those having odd lengths by means of a summation formula for the free cumulants with product as entries. Next, we use again this formula together with a generating series for Laguerre polynomials in order to compute the Taylor coefficients of the reciprocal of the $R$-transform of the free Jacobi process associated with a single pr…
We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independant unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. This results allow to study asymptotics of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang-Mills measure on the plane. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analog to Schwinger-Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal.
The first part of this paper is devoted to the Brown measure of the product of the free unitary Brownian motion by an arbitrary free non negative operator. Our approach follows the one recently initiated by Driver-Hall-Kemp though there are substantial differences at the analytical side. In particular, the corresponding Hamiltonian system is completely solvable and the characteristic curve describing the support of the Brown measure has a non-constant (in time) argument. In the second part, we specialize our findings to the product of the free unitary Brownian motion by a free self-adjoint pro…
We prove that the convergence of the real and imaginary parts of the logarithm of the characteristic polynomial of unitary Brownian motion toward Gaussian free fields on the cylinder, as the matrix dimension goes to infinity, holds in certain suitable Sobolev spaces, which we believe to be optimal. This is the natural dynamical analogue of the result for a fixed time by Hughes, Keating and O'Connell [1]. A weak kind of convergence is known since the work of Spohn [2], which was widely improved recently by Bourgade and Falconet [3]. In the course of this research we also proved a Wick-type iden…
The goal of this paper is to establish a relation between characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ GUE random matrices $\mathcal{H}$ as $N\to\infty$, and Gaussian processes with logarithmic correlations. We introduce a regularized version of fractional Brownian motion with zero Hurst index, which is a Gaussian process with stationary increments and logarithmic increment structure. Then we prove that this process appears as a limit of $D_N(z)=-\log|\det(\mathcal{H}-zI)|$ on mesoscopic scales as $N\to\infty$. By employing a Fourier integral representation, we use this to prove a continuous anal…
We show how the approach used in `N. Demni, T. Hmidi. Spectral Distribution of the Free unitary Brownian motion: another approach. Sem. Probab. XLIV. 2012. 191-206.' applies to describe the large-size limit of the marginal distribution of the Brownian motion on the complex linear group.
In this note, we show that the Lyapunov exponents of mixed products of random truncated Haar unitary and complex Ginibre matrices are asymptotically given by equally spaced `picket-fence' statistics. We discuss how these statistics should originate from the connection between random matrix products and multiplicative Brownian motion on $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, analogous to the connection between discrete random walks and ordinary Brownian motion. Our methods are based on contour integral formulas for products of classical matrix ensembles from integrable probability.
Let $Z_N$ be a Ginibre ensemble and let $A_N$ be a Hermitian random matrix independent from $Z_N$ such that $A_N$ converges in distribution to a self-adjoint random variable $x_0$. For each $t>0$, the random matrix $A_N+\sqrt{t}Z_N$ converges in $\ast$-distribution to $x_0+c_t$, where $c_t$ is the circular variable of variance $t$, free from $x_0$. We use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to compute the Brown measure $ρ_t$ of $x_0+c_t$. The Brown measure has a density that is constant along the vertical direction inside the support. The support of the Brown measure of $x_0+c_t$ is related to the subo…
We generalize the result of block-wise convergence of the Brownian motion on the unitary group $U(nm)$ towards a quantum Lévy process on the unitary dual group $U\langle n\rangle$ when $m\rightarrow\infty$, obtained by the author in a previous paper, by showing that the Brownian motions on the orthogonal group $O(nm)$ and the symplectic group $Sp(nm)$ also converge block-wise to this same quantum Lévy process.
We show that Sine$_β$, the bulk limit of the Gaussian $β$-ensembles is the spectrum of a self-adjoint random differential operator \[ f\to 2 {R_t^{-1}} \left[ \begin{array}{cc} 0 &-\tfrac{d}{dt} \tfrac{d}{dt} &0 \end{array} \right] f, \qquad f:[0,1)\to \mathbb R^2, \] where $R_t$ is the positive definite matrix representation of hyperbolic Brownian motion with variance $4/β$ in logarithmic time. The result connects the Montgomery-Dyson conjecture about the Sine$_2$ process and the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function, the Hilbert-Pólya conjecture and de Brange's attempt to prove the …
The perturbed GUE corners ensemble is the joint distribution of eigenvalues of all principal submatrices of a matrix $G+\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$, where $G$ is the random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and $\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$ is a fixed diagonal matrix. We introduce Markov transitions based on exponential jumps of eigenvalues, and show that their successive application is equivalent in distribution to a deterministic shift of the matrix. This result also leads to a new distributional symmetry for a family of reflected Brownian motions with drifts coming from an arith…
We compute analytically the probability $S(t)$ that a set of $N$ Brownian paths do not cross each other and stay below a moving boundary $g(τ)= W \sqrtτ$ up to time $t$. We show that for large $t$ it decays as a power law $S(t) \sim t^{- β(N,W)}$. The decay exponent $β(N,W)$ is obtained as the ground state energy of a quantum system of $N$ non-interacting fermions in a harmonic well in the presence of an infinite hard wall at position $W$. Explicit expressions for $β(N,W)$ are obtained in various limits of $N$ and $W$, in particular for large $N$ and large $W$. We obtain the joint distribution…
We consider the local statistics of $H = V^* X V + U^* Y U$ where $V$ and $U$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices, and $X$ and $Y$ are deterministic real diagonal matrices. In the bulk, we prove that the gap statistics and correlation functions coincide with the GUE in the limit when the matrix size $N \to \infty$ under mild assumptions on $X$ and $Y$. Our method relies on running a carefully chosen diffusion on the unitary group and comparing the resulting eigenvalue process to Dyson Brownian motion. Our method also applies to the case when $V$ and $U$ are drawn from the orthogo…
We study the Yang--Mills measure on the sphere with unitary structure group. In the limit where the structure group has high dimension, we show that the traces of loop holonomies converge in probability to a deterministic limit, which is known as the master field on the sphere. The values of the master field on simple loops are expressed in terms of the solution of a variational problem. We show that, given its values on simple loops, the master field is characterized on all loops of finite length by a system of differential equations, known as the Makeenko--Migdal equations. We obtain a numbe…
