If a torsion-free hyperbolic group G has 1-dimensional boundary, then the boundary is a Menger curve or a Sierpinski carpet provided G does not split over a cyclic group. When the boundary of G is a Sierpinski carpet we show that G is a quasi-convex subgroup of a 3-dimensional hyperbolic Poincare duality group. We also construct a ``topologically rigid'' hyperbolic group G: any homeomorphism of the boundary of G is induced by an element of G.
We introduce the concept of boundary rigidity for Gromov hyperbolic spaces. We show that a proper geodesic Gromov hyperbolic space with a pole is boundary rigid if and only if its Gromov boundary is uniformly perfect. As an application, we show that for a non-compact Gromov hyperbolic complete Riemannian manifold or a Gromov hyperbolic uniform graph, boundary rigidity is equivalent to having positive Cheeger isoperimetric constant and also to being nonamenable. Moreover, several hyperbolic fillings of compact metric spaces are proved to be boundary rigid if and only if the metric spaces are un…
We prove several topological and dynamical properties of the boundary of a hierarchically hyperbolic group are independent of the specific hierarchically hyperbolic structure. This is accomplished by proving that the boundary is invariant under a "maximization" procedure introduced by the first two authors and Durham.
For n>6, we show that if G is a torsion-free hyperbolic group whose visual boundary is an (n-2)-dimensional Sierpinski space, then G=π_1(W) for some aspherical n-manifold W with nonempty boundary. Concerning the converse, we construct, for each n>3, examples of aspherical manifolds with boundary, whose fundamental group G is hyperbolic, but with visual boundary not homeomorphic to an (n-2)-dimensional Sierpinski space.
Let G be a torsion-free hyperbolic group and let n > 5 be an integer. We prove that G is the fundamental group of a closed aspherical manifold if the boundary of G is homeomorphic to an (n-1)-dimensional sphere.
We provide negative answers to questions posed by Durham, Hagen, and Sisto on the existence of boundary maps for some hierarchically hyperbolic spaces, namely maps from right-angled Artin groups to mapping class groups. We also prove results on existence of boundary maps for free subgroups of mapping class groups.
In this article, we discuss the quasiconformal structure of boundaries of right-angled hyperbolic buildings using combinatorial tools. In particular we exhibit some examples of buildings of dimension 3 and 4 whose boundaries satisfy the combinatorial Loewner property. This property is a weak version of the Loewner property. This is motivated by the fact that the quasiconformal structure of the boundary led to many results of rigidity in hyperbolic spaces since G.D. Mostow. In the case of buildings of dimension 2, many work have been done by M. Bourdon and H. Pajot. In particular, the Loewner p…
Suppose G is a Gromov hyperbolic group, and the boundary at infinity of G is quasisymmetrically homeomorphic to an Ahlfors Q-regular metric 2-sphere Z with Ahlfors regular conformal dimension Q. Then G acts discretely, cocompactly, and isometrically on hyperbolic 3-space.
In this note we use Yaman's dynamical characterization of relative hyperbolicity to prove a theorem of Bowditch about relatively hyperbolic pairs $(G,\mathcal{H})$ with $G$ hyperbolic. Our proof additionally gives a description of the Bowditch boundary of such a pair. This description of the boundary was previously obtained by Tran.
In this note, we use some combinatorial modulus on the boundary of a right-angled hyperbolic building to control its conformal dimension. The lower bound obtained is optimal in the case of Fuchsian buildings.
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green's function of the corresponding random walk. We give a complete topological characterization of the Martin boundary of finitely supported random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. In particular, in the case of nonuniform lattices in the real hyperbolic space H n , we show that the Martin boundary coincides with the CAT (0) boundary of the truncated space, and thus when n = 3, is homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet.
We prove that the Poisson boundary of a random walk with finite entropy on a non-elementary hyperbolic group can be identified with its hyperbolic boundary, without assuming any moment condition on the measure. We also extend our method to groups with an action by isometries on a hyperbolic metric space containing a WPD element; this applies to a large class of non-hyperbolic groups such as relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and groups acting on CAT(0) spaces.
We show that if a hyperbolic group acts geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex, then the induced boundary action is hyperfinite. This means that for a cubulated hyperbolic group the natural action on its Gromov boundary is hyperfinite, which generalizes an old result of Dougherty, Jackson and Kechris for the free group case.
We investigate Lp-boundary representations of hyperbolic groups. We prove that such representations are irreducible if and only if the corresponding Riesz operators are injective.
We study the unitary boundary representation of a strongly transitive group acting on a right-angled hyperbolic building. We show its irreducibility. We do so by associating to such a representation a representation of a certain Hecke algebra, which is a deformation of the classical representation of a hyperbolic reflection group. We show that the associated Hecke algebra representation is irreducible.
We investigate the relationship between the metric boundary and the Gromov boundary of a hyperbolic metric space. We show that the Gromov boundary is a quotient topological space of the metric boundary, and that therefore a word-hyperbolic group has an amenable action on the metric boundary of its Cayley graph. This result has significance for the study of Lip-norms on group C*-algebras.
In [BBM21], Belk, Bleak and Matucci proved that hyperbolic groups can be seen as subgroups of the rational group. In order to do so, they associated a tree of atoms to each hyperbolic group. Not so many connections between this tree and the literature on hyperbolic groups were known. In this paper, we prove an atom-version of the fellow traveler property and exponential divergence, together with other similar results. These leads to several consequences: a bound from above of the topological dimension of the Gromov boundary, the definition of an augmented tree which is quasi-isometric to the C…
Let K be a fine hyperbolic graph and G be a group acting on K with finite quotient. We prove that G is exact provided that all vertex stabilizers are exact. In particular, a relatively hyperbolic group is exact if all its peripheral groups are exact. We prove this by showing that the group G acts amenably on a compact topological space. We include some applications to the theories of group von Neumann algebras and of measurable orbit equivalence relations.
We show that if $G$ is a finitely generated group hyperbolic relative to a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{P}$, then the natural action of $G$ on the geodesic boundary of the associated relative Cayley graph induces a hyperfinite equivalence relation. As a corollary of this, we obtain that the natural action of $G$ on its Bowditch boundary $\partial (G,\mathcal{P})$ also induces a hyperfinite equivalence relation. This strengthens a result of Ozawa obtained for $\mathcal{P}$ consisting of amenable subgroups and uses a recent work of Marquis and Sabok.
Let $Γ$ be a Gromov hyperbolic group, endowed with an arbitrary left-invariant hyperbolic metric, quasi-isometric to a word metric. The action of $Γ$ on its boundary $\partialΓ$ endowed with the Patterson-Sullivan measure $μ$, after an appropriate normalization, gives rise to a faithful unitary representation of $Γ$ on $L^2(\partialΓ,μ)$. We show that these representations are irreducible, and give criteria for their unitary equivalence in terms of the metrics on $Γ$. Special cases include quasi-regular representations on the Poisson boundary.
We construct a family of odd, finitely summable Fredholm modules over the crossed product C*-algebra $C(\bd \G)\rtimes \G$ associated to the action of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $\G$ on its Gromov boundary $\bd \G$. These Fredholm modules all represent the same, distinguished class in K-homology, namely that of the `boundary extension' of $C(\bd \G)\rtimes \G$ associated to the Gromov compactification of $\G$, and is typically nonzero. Their summability is closely related to the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary. We use these results to compute the Connes-Chern character of the bounda…
We investigate properties of some spherical fonctions defined on hyperbolic groups using boundary representations on the Gromov boundary endowed with the Patterson-Sullivan measure class. We prove sharp decay estimates for spherical functions as well as spectral inequalities associated with boundary representations. This point of view on the boundary allows us to view the so-called \emph{property RD} (also called \emph{Haagerup's inequality}) as a particular case of a more general behavior of spherical functions on hyperbolic groups. In particular, we give a constructive proof using a boundary…
We establish new results on the weak containment of quasi-regular and Koopman representations of a second countable locally compact group $G$ associated with non-singular $G$-spaces. We deduce that any two boundary representations of a hyperbolic locally compact group are weakly equivalent. We also show that non-amenable hyperbolic locally compact groups with a cocompact amenable subgroup are characterized by the property that any two proper length functions are homothetic up to an additive constant. Combining those results with the work of Ł. Garncarek on the irreducibility of boundary repres…
We construct a one-to-one continuous map from the Morse boundary of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to its Martin boundary. This construction is based on deviation inequalities generalizing Ancona's work on hyperbolic groups. This provides a possibly new metrizable topology on the Morse boundary of such groups. We also prove that the Morse boundary has measure 0 with respect to the harmonic measure unless the group is hyperbolic.
