We show that the quasiconvex subgroups in doubles of certain negatively curved groups are closed in the profinite topology. This allows us to construct the first known large family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds such that any finitely generated subgroup of the fundamental group of any member of the family is closed in the profinite topology.
We prove that, for any two finite volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, the amalgamation of their fundamental groups along any nontrivial geometrically finite subgroup is not LERF. This generalizes the author's previous work on nonLERFness of amalgamations of hyperbolic $3$-manifold groups along abelian subgroups. A consequence of this result is that closed arithmetic hyperbolic $4$-manifolds have nonLERF fundamental groups. Along with the author's previous work, we get that, for any arithmetic hyperbolic manifold with dimension at least $4$, with possible exceptions in $7$-dimensional manifolds de…
We consider largeness of groups given by a presentation of deficiency 1, where the group is respectively free-by-cyclic, LERF or 1-relator. We give the first examples of (finitely generated free)-by-(infinite cyclic) word hyperbolic groups which are large, show that a LERF deficiency 1 group with first Betti number at least 2 is large or the integers times the integers, and show that 2-generator 1-relator groups where the relator has height 1 obey the dichotomy that either the group is large or all its finite images are metacyclic.
We will show that, for any noncompact arithmetic hyperbolic $m$-manifold with $m> 3$, and any compact arithmetic hyperbolic $m$-manifold with $m> 4$ that is not a $7$-dimensional arithmetic hyperbolic manifold defined by octonions, its fundamental group is not LERF. The main ingredient in the proof is a study on abelian amalgamations of hyperbolic $3$-manifold groups. We will also show that a compact orientable irreducible $3$-manifold with empty or tori boundary supports a geometric structure if and only if its fundamental group is LERF.
Sela introduced limit groups in his work on the Tarski problem, and showed that each limit group has a cyclic hierarchy. In this paper, a class of relatively hyperbolic groups, equipped with a hierarchy similar to the one for limit groups, is shown to be closed under quasi-isometry. Additionally, these groups share some of the properties of limit groups. In particular, groups quasi-isometric to limit groups are shown to be LERF and virtually toral relatively hyperbolic.
Suppose that all hyperbolic groups are residually finite. The following statements follow: In relatively hyperbolic groups with peripheral structures consisting of finitely generated nilpotent subgroups, quasiconvex subgroups are separable; Geometrically finite subgroups of non-uniform lattices in rank one symmetric spaces are separable; Kleinian groups are subgroup separable. We also show that LERF for finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds would follow from LERF for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The method is to reduce, via combination and filling theorems, the separability of a quasiconvex s…
Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume that admits a decomposition into right-angled ideal polyhedra. We show that M has a deformation retraction that is a virtually special square complex, in the sense of Haglund and Wise and deduce that such manifolds are virtually fibered. We generalise a theorem of Haglund and Wise to the relatively hyperbolic setting and deduce that the fundamental group of M is LERF and that the geometrically finite subgroups of the fundamental group are virtual retracts. Examples of 3-manifolds admitting such a decomposition include augmented link co…
Let $H$ be a hyperbolic group, $A$ and $B$ be subgroups of $H$, and $gr(H,A,B)$ be the growth function of the double cosets $AhB, h \in H$. We prove that the behavior of $gr(H,A,B)$ splits into two different cases. If $A$ and $B$ are not quasiconvex, we obtain that every growth function of a finitely presented group can appear as $gr(H,A,B)$. We can even take $A=B$. In contrast, for quasiconvex subgroups A and B of infinite index, $gr(H,A,B)$ is exponential. Moreover, there exists a constant $λ> 0$, such that $gr(H,A,B)(r) >λf_H(r)$ for all big enough $r$, where $f_H(r)$ is the growth function…
We discuss the linearity and discreteness of amalgamated products of linear word-hyperbolic groups. In particular, we prove that the double of an Anosov group along a maximal cyclic subgroup is always linear, and we construct examples of such groups which do not admit any discrete and faithful representation in rank 1. We also build new examples of non-linear word-hyperbolic groups, elaborating on a previous work of Canary--Stover--Tsouvalas.
Gromov asked whether every one-ended word-hyperbolic group contains a hyperbolic surface group. We prove that every one-ended double of a free group has a hyperbolic surface subgroup if (1) the free group has rank two, or (2) every generator is used the same number of times in the amalgamating words. To prove this, we formulate a stronger statement on Whitehead graphs and prove its specialization by combinatorial induction for (1) and the characterization of perfect matching polytopes by Edmonds for (2).
We show that, given a finitely generated group $G$ as the coordinate group of a finite system of equations over a torsion-free hyperbolic group $Γ$, there is an algorithm which constructs a cover of a canonical solution diagram. The diagram encodes all homomorphisms from $G$ to $Γ$ as compositions of factorizations through $Γ$-NTQ groups and canonical automorphisms of the corresponding NTQ-subgroups. We also give another characterization of $Γ$-limit groups as iterated generalized doubles over $Γ$.
Suppose $G$ is a 1-ended finitely generated group that is hyperbolic relative to P a finite collection of 1-ended finitely generated subgroups. Our main theorem states that if the boundary $\partial (G, P)$ has no cut point, then $G$ has semistable fundamental group at $\infty$. Under mild conditions on $G$ and the members of P the 1-ended hypotheses and the no cut point condition can be eliminated to obtain the same semistability conclusion. We give an example that shows our main result is somewhat optimal. Finally, we improve a "double dagge" result of F. Dahmani and D. Groves.
Let M = H^3 / Γbe a hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume. We show that if H and K are abelian subgroups of Γand g is in Γ, then the double coset HgK is separable in Γ. As a consequence we prove that if M is a closed, orientable, Haken 3-manifold and the fundamental group of every hyperbolic piece of the torus decomposition of M is conjugacy separable then so is the fundamental group of M. Invoking recent work of Agol and Wise, it follows that if M is a compact, orientable 3-manifold then π_1(M) is conjugacy separable.
We show that any stationary symmteric $α$-stable ($SαS$) random field indexed by a countable amenable group $G$ is weakly mixing if and only if it is generated by a null action, extending works of Samorodnitsky and Wang-Roy-Stoev for abelian groups to all amenable groups. This enables us to improve significantly the domain of a recently discovered connection to von Neumann algebras. We also establish ergodicity of stationary $SαS$ fields associated with boundary and double boundary actions of a hyperbolic group $G$, where the boundary is equipped with either the Patterson-Sullivan or the hitti…
We use the theory of Clifford algebras and Vahlen groups to study Weyl groups of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras T_n^{++}, obtained by a process of double extension from a Cartan matrix of finite type T_n, whose corresponding generalized Cartan matrices are symmetric.
We continue investigations started by Lakeland on Fuchsian and Kleinian groups which have a Dirichlet fundamental domain that also is a Ford domain in the upper half-space model of hyperbolic $2$- and $3$-space, or which have a Dirichlet domain with multiple centers. Such domains are called DF-domains and Double Dirichlet domains respectively. Making use of earlier obtained concrete formulas for the bisectors defining the Dirichlet domain of center $i \in \HQ^2$ or center $j \in \HQ^3$, we obtain a simple condition on the matrix entries of the side-pairing transformations of the fundamental do…
In this paper, we state two combination theorems for relatively quasiconvex subgroups in a relatively hyperbolic group. Applications are given to the separability of double cosets of certain relatively quasiconvex subgroups and the existence of closed surface subgroups in relatively hyperbolic groups.
Y. Benoist proved that if a closed three-manifold M admits an indecomposable convex real projective structure, then M is topologically the union along tori and Klein bottles of finitely many sub-manifolds each of which admits a complete finite volume hyperbolic structure on its interior. We describe some initial results in the direction of a potential converse to Benoist's theorem. We show that a cusped hyperbolic three-manifold may, under certain assumptions, be deformed to convex projective structures with totally geodesic torus boundary. Such structures may be convexly glued together whenev…
In this paper we investigate Gromov's question: whether every one-ended word hyperbolic group contains a surface subgroup. The case of double groups is considered by studying the associated one relator groups. We show that the majority (96%) of the randomly selected double groups with three generators have the property. The experiments are performed on MAGMA software.
Let Gamma_0 be a discrete group. For a pair (j,rho) of representations of Gamma_0 into PO(n,1)=Isom(H^n) with j geometrically finite, we study the set of (j,rho)-equivariant Lipschitz maps from the real hyperbolic space H^n to itself that have minimal Lipschitz constant. Our main result is the existence of a geodesic lamination that is "maximally stretched" by all such maps when the minimal constant is at least 1. As an application, we generalize two-dimensional results and constructions of Thurston and extend his asymmetric metric on Teichmüller space to a geometrically finite setting and to …
A longstanding question of Gromov asks whether every one-ended word-hyperbolic group contains a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. An infinite family of word-hyperbolic groups can be obtained by taking doubles of free groups amalgamated along words that are not proper powers. We define a set of polygonal words in a free group of finite rank, and prove that polygonality of the amalgamating word guarantees that the associated square complex virtually contains a $π_1$-injective closed surface. We provide many concrete examples of classes of polygonal word…
The paper is a part of an ongoing program which aims to show that the existential theory in free groups (hyperbolic groups or even toral relatively hyperbolic) is NP-complete. For that we study compression of solutions with straight-line programs (SLPs) as suggested originally by Plandowski and Rytter in the context of a single word equation. We review some basic results on SLPs and give full proofs in order to keep this fundamental part of the program self-contained. Next we study systems of equations with constraints in free groups and more generally in free products of abelian groups. We sh…
