It is consistent that there is a partial order (P,<) of size aleph_1 such that every monotone (unary) function from P to P is first order definable in (P,<).
The partial order is constructed in an extension obtained by finite support iteration of Cohen forcing.
The main points is that (1) all monotone functions from P to P will (essentially) have countable range (this uses a Delta-system argument) and (2) that all countable subsets of P will be first order definable, so we have to code these countable sets into the partial order. Amalgamation of finite structures plays an essential role.
In this paper we work in an arbitrary o-minimal structure with definable Skolem functions and we prove that definably connected, locally definable manifolds are uniformly definably path connected, have an admissible cover by definably simply connected, open definable subsets and, definable paths and definable homotopies on such locally definable manifolds can be lifted to locally definable covering maps. These properties allows us to obtain the main properties of the general o-minimal fundamental group, including: invariance and comparison results; existence of universal locally definable cove…
In this paper we work in o-minimal structures with definable Skolem functions and show that a continuous definable map between Hausdorff locally definably compact definable spaces is definably proper if and only if it is proper morphism in the category of definable spaces. We give several other characterizations of definably proper including one involving the existence of limits of definable types. We also prove the basic properties of definably proper maps and the invariance of definably proper in elementary extensions and o-minimal expansions.
Let $K \subset {\mathbb R}^n$ be a compact definable set in an o-minimal structure over $\mathbb R$, e.g., a semi-algebraic or a subanalytic set. A definable family $\{ S_δ|\> 0< δ\in {\mathbb R} \}$ of compact subsets of $K$, is called a monotone family if $S_δ\subset S_η$ for all sufficiently small $δ> η>0$. The main result of the paper is that when $\dim K \le 2$ there exists a definable triangulation of $K$ such that for each (open) simplex $Λ$ of the triangulation and each small enough $δ>0$, the intersection $S_δ\cap Λ$ is equivalent to one of the five standard families in the standard s…
A direct application of Zorn's Lemma gives that every Lipschitz map $f:X\subset \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$ has an extension to a Lipschitz map $\widetilde f: \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$. This is analogous, but more easy, to Kirszbraun's Theorem about the existence of Lipschitz extensions of Lipschitz maps $S\subset \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$. Recently, Fischer and Aschenbrenner obtained a definable version of Kirszbraun's Theorem. In the present paper, we prove in the $p$-adic context that $\widetilde f$ can be taken definable when $f$ is definable, where definable mea…
In [S. Basu, A. Gabrielov, N. Vorobjov, Semi-monotone sets. arXiv:1004.5047v2 (2011)] we defined semi-monotone sets, as open bounded sets, definable in an o-minimal structure over the reals, and having connected intersections with all translated coordinate cones in R^n. In this paper we develop this theory further by defining monotone functions and maps, and studying their fundamental geometric properties. We prove several equivalent conditions for a bounded continuous definable function or map to be monotone. We show that the class of graphs of monotone maps is closed under intersections with…
The aim of this paper is to study the dimensions and standard part maps between the field of $p$-adic numbers ${{\mathbb Q}_p}$ and its elementary extension $K$ in the language of rings $L_r$. We show that for any $K$-definable set $X\subseteq K^m$, $\text{dim}_K(X)\geq \text{dim}_{{\mathbb Q}_p}(X\cap {{\mathbb Q}_p}^m)$. Let $V\subseteq K$ be convex hull of $K$ over ${{\mathbb Q}_p}$, and $\text{\st}: V\rightarrow {{\mathbb Q}_p}$ be the standard part map. We show that for any $K$-definable function $f:K^m\rightarrow K$, there is definable subset $D\subseteq{{\mathbb Q}_p}^m$ such that ${{\m…
We study FO+, a fragment of first-order logic on finite words, where monadic predicates can only appear positively. We show that there is a FO-definable language that is monotone in monadic predicates but not definable in FO+. This provides a simple proof that Lyndon's preservation theorem fails on finite structures. We additionally show that given a regular language, it is undecidable whether it is definable in FO+.
We prove that in the Cohen extension adding $\aleph_3$ generic reals to a model of $ZFC+CH$ containing a simplified $(ω_1,2)$-morass, gap-2 morass-definable $η_1$-orderings with cardinality $\aleph_3$ are order-isomorphic. Hence it is consistent that the $2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_3$ and that morass-definable $η_1$-orderings with cardinality of the continuum are order-isomorphic. We prove that there are ultrapowers of $\mathbb{R}$ over $ω$ that are gap-2 morass-definable. The constructions use a simplified gap-2 morass, and commutativity with morass-maps and morass-embeddings, to extend a transfinit…
We work over an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. The o-minimal homotopy groups of a definable set are defined naturally using definable continuous maps. We prove that any two semialgebraic maps which are definably homotopic are also semialgebraically homotopic. This result together with the study of semialgebraic homotopy done by H. Delfs and M. Knebusch allows us to develop an o-minimal homotopy theory. In particular, we obtain o-minimal versions of the Hurewicz theorems and the Whitehead theorem.
We equip integral graded-polarized mixed period spaces with a natural $\mathbb{R}_{alg}$-definable analytic structure, and prove that any period map associated to an admissible variation of integral graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures is definable in $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$ with respect to this structure. As a consequence we reprove that the zero loci of admissible normal functions are algebraic.
We consider sets and maps defined over an o-minimal structure over the reals, such as real semi-algebraic or subanalytic sets. A {\em monotone map} is a multi-dimensional generalization of a usual univariate monotone function, while the closure of the graph of a monotone map is a generalization of a compact convex set. In a particular case of an identically constant function, such a graph is called a {\em semi-monotone set}. Graphs of monotone maps are, generally, non-convex, and their intersections, unlike intersections of convex sets, can be topologically complicated. In particular, such an …
We prove a conjecture of Griffiths on the quasi-projectivity of images of period maps using algebraization results arising from o-minimal geometry. Specifically, we first develop a theory of analytic spaces and coherent sheaves that are definable with respect to a given o-minimal structure, and prove a GAGA-type theorem algebraizing definable coherent sheaves on complex algebraic spaces. We then combine this with algebraization theorems of Artin to show that proper definable images of complex algebraic spaces are algebraic. Applying this to period maps, we conclude that the images of period ma…
For first-order expansions of the field of real numbers, nondefinability of the set of natural numbers is equivalent to equality of topological and Assouad dimension on images of closed definable sets under definable continuous maps.
We show that if $X$ is an $m$-dimensional definable set in $\mathbb{R}^\text{pow}_\text{an}$, the structure of real subanalytic sets with real power maps added, then for any positive integer r there exists a $C^r$-parameterization of X consisting of $cr^{m^3}$ maps for some constant $c$. Moreover, these maps are real analytic and this bound is uniform for a definable family.
The first papers on o-minimal structures appeared in the mid 1980s, since then the subject has grown into a wide ranging generalisation of semialgebraic, subanalytic and subpfaffian geometry. In these notes we try to show that this is in fact the case by presenting several examples of o-minimal structures and by listing some geometric properties of sets and maps definable in o-minimal structures. We omit here any reference to the pure model theory of o-minimal structures and to the theory of groups and rings definable in o-minimal structures.
