Consider a planar Brownian motion run for finite time. The frontier or ``outer boundary'' of the path is the boundary of the unbounded component of the complement. Burdzy (1989) showed that the frontier has infinite length. We improve this by showing that the Hausdorff dimension of the frontier is strictly greater than 1. (It has been conjectured that the Brownian frontier has dimension $4/3$, but this is still open.) The proof uses Jones's Traveling Salesman Theorem and a self-similar tiling of the plane by fractal tiles known as Gosper Islands.
The frontier of a planar Brownian motion is the boundary of the unbounded component of the complement of its range. In this paper we find the Hausdorff dimension of the set of double points on the frontier.
Our purpose in this paper is to determine the limiting distribution and the evolution rate of particles near the frontier of branching Brownian motions. Here the branching rate is given by a Kato class measure with compact support in Euclidean space. Our investigation focuses on the two dimensional case.
In this note, we study the asymptotical frontier behavior of a branching reflected Brownian motion. There is essentially no difference in maximal displacement between a branching Brownian motion and its reflected counterpart. We provide two proofs of this fact, one via a soft argument on the dependance of two-sided extremal particles in a branching Brownian motion and the other based on direct computations as in Roberts. The asymptotics of minimal displacement is also given.
We consider the model of branching Brownian motion with a single catalytic point at the origin and binary branching. We establish some fine results for the asymptotic behaviour of the numbers of particles travelling at different speeds and give an explicit characterisation of the spatial distribution of particles travelling at the critical speed.
We give short proofs of two classical results about the position of the extremal particle in a branching Brownian motion, one concerning the median position and another the almost sure behaviour.
This paper describes joint work with Oded Schramm and Wendelin Werner establishing the values of the planar Brownian intersection exponents from which one derives the Hausdorff dimension of certain exceptional sets of planar Brownian motion. In particular, we proof a conjecture of Mandelbrot that the dimension of the frontier is 4/3. The proof uses a universality principle for conformally invariant measures and a new process, the stochastic Loewner evolution ($SLE$), introduced by Schramm. These ideas can be used to study other planar lattice models from statistical physics at criticality. I d…
We prove a conjecture of Lalley and Sellke [Ann. Probab. 15 (1987)] asserting that the empirical (time-averaged) distribution function of the maximum of branching Brownian motion converges almost surely to a double exponential, or Gumbel, distribution with a random shift. The method of proof is based on the decorrelation of the maximal displacements for appropriate time scales. A crucial input is the localization of the paths of particles close to the maximum that was previously established by the authors [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64 (2011)].
In a series of recent preprints, we have proven that with probability one the Hausdorff dimension on the outer boundary of planar Brownian motion is 4/3, confirming a conjecture by Mandelbrot. It is also shown that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of cut points is a.s. 3/4. The present paper is an expository outline of the arguments involved in the proof of these and related results.
We give an elementary self-contained proof of the fact that the walk dimension of the Brownian motion on an arbitrary generalized Sierpiński carpet is greater than two, no proof of which in this generality had been available in the literature. Our proof is based solely on the self-similarity and hypercubic symmetry of the associated Dirichlet form and on several very basic pieces of functional analysis and the theory of regular symmetric Dirichlet forms. We also present an application of this fact to the singularity of the energy measures with respect to the canonical self-similar measure (uni…
It is well-known that the maximal particle in a branching Brownian motion sits near $\sqrt2 t - \frac{3}{2\sqrt2}\log t$ at time $t$. One may then ask about the paths of particles near the frontier: how close can they stay to this critical curve? Two different approaches to this question have been developed. We improve upon the best-known bounds in each case, revealing new qualitative features including marked differences between the two approaches.
We consider a branching Brownian motion evolving in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that the asymptotic behaviour of the maximal displacement is given by a first ballistic order, plus a logarithmic correction that increases with the dimension $d$. The proof is based on simple geometrical evidence. It leads to the interesting following side result: with high probability, for any $d \geq 2$, individuals on the frontier of the process are close parents if and only if they are geographically close.
We prove the existence of the intersection local time for two independent, d -dimensional fractional Brownian motions with the same Hurst parameter H. Assume d greater or equal to 2, then the intersection local time exists if and only if Hd<2.
For a set $A\subset C[0,\infty)$, we give new results on the growth of the number of particles in a dyadic branching Brownian motion whose paths fall within A. We show that it is possible to work without rescaling the paths. We give large deviations probabilities as well as a more sophisticated proof of a result on growth in the number of particles along certain sets of paths. Our results reveal that the number of particles can oscillate dramatically. As a byproduct of our methods we also obtain new results on the number of particles near the frontier of the model. The methods used are entirel…
It is shown that the law of an SDE driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than 1/2 has a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure, provided that the driving vector fields satisfy Hörmander's condition. The main new ingredient of the proof is an extension of Norris' lemma to this situation.
We consider the model of Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree. For every $r\geq 0$ and every connected component of the set of points where Brownian motion is greater than $r$, we define the boundary size of this component, and we then show that the collection of these boundary sizes evolves when $r$ varies like a well-identified growth-fragmentation process. We then prove that the same growth-fragmentation process appears when slicing a Brownian disk at height $r$ and considering the perimeters of the resulting connected components.
In this paper, we develop a Young integration theory in dimension 2 which will allow us to solve a non-linear one dimensional wave equation driven by an arbitrary signal whose rectangular increments satisfy some Hölder regularity conditions, for some Hölder exponent greater than 1/2. This result will be applied to the infinite dimensional fractional Brownian motion.
We study the anticipative backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs, for short) driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H greater than 1/2. The stochastic integral used throughout the paper is the divergence operator type integral. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these equations. A comparison theorem for this type of anticipative BSDEs is also established.
Let $B^{H}$ be a fractional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ of Hurst index $H\in\left(0,1\right)$, $f:\left[0,1\right]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function and $A\subset\left[0,1\right]$ a Borel set. We provide sufficient conditions for the image $(B^{H}+f)(A)$ to have a positive Lebesgue measure or to have a non-empty interior. This is done through the study of the properties of the density of the occupation measure of $(B^{H}+f)$. Precisely, we prove that if the parabolic Hausdorff dimension of the graph of $f$ is greater than $Hd$, then the density is a square integrable funct…
We consider stochastic flow on n-dimensional Euclidean space driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H greater than half, and study tangent flow and the growth of the Hausdorff measure of sub-manifolds of the ambient n-dimensional Euclidean space, as they evolve under the flow. The main result is a bound on the rate of (global) growth in terms of the (local) Holder norm of the flow.
We provide a device, called the local predictor, which extends the idea of the predictable compensator. It is shown that a fBm with the Hurst index greater than 1/2 coincides with its local predictor while fBm with the Hurst index smaller than 1/2 does not admit any local predictor. The local predictor of a martingale (in particular: Brownian motion) trivially exists and equals 0.
In this paper, we focus on the mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H greater then 1/2. First, the existence and uniqueness of these equations are established under Lipschitz condition. Then, a comparison theorem for such mean-field BSDEs is obtained. Finally, as an application, we connect this mean-field BSDE with a nonlocal partial differential equation (PDE).
We consider super-Brownian motion whose historical paths reflect from each other, unlike those of the usual historical super-Brownian motion. We prove tightness for the family of distributions corresponding to a sequence of discrete approximations but we leave the problem of uniqueness of the limit open. We prove a few results about path behavior for processes under any limit distribution. In particular, we show that for any $γ>0$, a "typical" increment of a reflecting historical path over a small time interval $Δt$ is not greater than $(Δt)^{3/4 - γ}$.
In this article, we study the numerical approximation of stochastic differential equations driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst parameter greater than 1/3. We introduce an implementable scheme for these equations, which is based on a second order Taylor expansion, where the usual Levy area terms are replaced by products of increments of the driving fBm. The convergence of our scheme is shown by means of a combination of rough paths techniques and error bounds for the discretisation of the Levy area terms.
It is known that Schramm-Loewner Evolutions (SLEs) have a.s. frontier points if $κ>4$ and a.s. cutpoints if $4<κ<8$. If $κ>4$, an appropriate version of $\SLE(κ)$ has a renewal property: it starts afresh after visiting its frontier. Thus one can give an excursion decomposition for this particular $\SLE(κ)$ ``away from its frontier''. For $4<κ<8$, there is a two-sided analogue of this situation: a particular version of $\SLE(κ)$ has a renewal property w.r.t its cutpoints; one studies excursion decompositions of this $\SLE$ ``away from its cutpoints''. For $κ=6$, this overlaps Virág's results on…
We show that the distribution of the square of the supremum of reflected fractional Brownian motion up to time a, with Hurst parameter-H greater than 1/2, is related to the distribution of its hitting time to level $1,$ using the self similarity property of fractional Brownian motion. It is also proven that second moment of supremum of reflected fractional Brownian motion up to time $a$ is bounded above by $a^{2H}.$ Similar relations are obtained for the supremum of fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than 1/2, and its hitting time to level $1.$ What is more, we obtain an u…
We consider a stationary fluid queue with fractional Brownian motion input. Conditional on the workload at time zero being greater than a large value $b$, we provide the limiting distribution for the amount of time that the workload process spends above level $b$ over the busy cycle straddling the origin, as $b\to\infty$. Our results can be interpreted as showing that long delays occur in large clumps of size of order $b^{2-1/H}$. The conditional limit result involves a finer scaling of the queueing process than fluid analysis, thereby departing from previous related literature.
We consider anticipative Stratonovich stochastic differential equations driven by some stochastic process (not necessarily a semi-martingale). No adaptedness of initial point or vector fields is assumed. Under a simple condition on the stochastic process, we show that the unique solution of the above SDE understood in the rough path sense is actually a Stratonovich solution. This condition is satisfied by the Brownian motion and the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than 1/4. As application, we obtain rather flexible results such as support theorems, large deviation princ…
We consider a mean-field optimal control problem for stochastic differential equations with delay driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than one half. Stochastic optimal control problems driven by fractional Brownian motion can not be studied using classical methods, because the fractional Brownian motion is neither a Markov process nor a semi-martingale. However, using the fractional White noise calculus combined with some special tools related to the differentiation for functions of measures, we establish and prove necessary and sufficient stochastic maximum princ…
By the Cameron--Martin theorem, if a function $f$ is in the Dirichlet space $D$, then $B+f$ has the same a.s. properties as standard Brownian motion, $B$. In this paper we examine properties of $B+f$ when $f \notin D$. We start by establishing a general 0-1 law, which in particular implies that for any fixed $f$, the Hausdorff dimension of the image and the graph of $B+f$ are constants a.s. (This 0-1 law applies to any Lévy process.) Then we show that if the function $f$ is Hölder$(1/2)$, then $B+f$ is intersection equivalent to $B$. Moreover, $B+f$ has double points a.s. in dimensions $d\le 3…
In [4], it is proved that we can have a continuous first-passage-time density function of one dimensional standard Brownian motion when the boundary is Hölder continuous with exponent greater than 1/2. For the purpose of extending [4] into multidimensional domains, we show that there exists a continuous first-passage-time density function of standard $d$-dimensional Brownian motion in moving boundaries in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$, under a $C^{3}$-diffeomorphism. Similarly as in [4], by using a property of local time of standard $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and the heat equation with Diri…
An N-parameter Brownian sheet in R^d maps a non-random compact set F in R^N_+ to the random compact set B(F) in \R^d. We prove two results on the image-set B(F): (1) It has positive d-dimensional Lebesgue measure if and only if F has positive (d/2)-dimensional capacity. This generalizes greatly the earlier works of J. Hawkes (1977), J.-P. Kahane (1985a; 1985b), and one of the present authors (1999). (2) If the Hausdorff dimension of F is strictly greater than (d/2), then with probability one, we can find a finite number of points ζ_1,...,ζ_m such that for any rotation matrix θthat leaves F in …
We consider the sum of two self-similar centred Gaussian processes with different self-similarity indices. Under non-negativity assumptions of covariance functions and some further minor conditions, we show that the asymptotic behaviour of the persistence probability of the sum is the same as for the single process with the greater self-similarity index. In particular, this covers the mixed fractional Brownian motion introduced in Cheridito (2001) and shows that the corresponding persistence probability decays asymptotically polynomially with persistence exponent $1-\max(1/2,H),$ where $H$ is …
We analyze the effect of additive fractional noise with Hurst parameter $H > \frac{1}{2}$ on fast-slow systems. Our strategy is based on sample paths estimates, similar to the approach by Berglund and Gentz in the Brownian motion case. Yet, the setting of fractional Brownian motion does not allow us to use the martingale methods from fast-slow systems with Brownian motion. We thoroughly investigate the case where the deterministic system permits a uniformly hyperbolic stable slow manifold. In this setting, we provide a neighborhood, tailored to the fast-slow structure of the system, that conta…
The classical skew-product decomposition of planar Brownian motion represents the process in polar coordinates as an autonomously Markovian radial part and an angular part that is an independent Brownian motion on the unit circle time-changed according to the radial part. Theorem 4 of Liao (2009) gives a broad generalization of this fact to a setting where there is a diffusion on a manifold $X$ with a distribution that is equivariant under the smooth action of a Lie group $K$. Under appropriate conditions, there is a decomposition into an autonomously Markovian "radial" part that lives on the …

This paper studies, in dimensions greater than two, stationary diffusion processes in random environment which are small, isotropic perturbations of Brownian motion satisfying a finite range dependence. Such processes were first considered in the continuous setting by Sznitman and Zeitouni [20]. Building upon their work, it is shown by analyzing the associated elliptic boundary-value problem that, almost surely, the smoothed (in the sense that the boundary data is continuous) exit law of the diffusion from large domains converges, as the domain's scale approaches infinity, to that of a Brownia…
In this thesis, branching Brownian motion (BBM) is a random particle system where the particles diffuse on the real line according to Brownian motions and branch at constant rate into a random number of particles with expectation greater than 1. We study two models of BBM with selection: BBM with absorption at a space-time line and the N-BBM, where, as soon as the number of particles exceeds a given number N, only the N right-most particles are kept, the others being removed from the system. For the first model, we study the law of the number of absorbed particles in the case where the process…
We prove that for a standard Brownian motion, there exists a first-passage-time density function through a locally Hölder continuous curve with exponent greater than 1/2. By using a property of local time of a standard Brownian motion and the theories of partial differential equations in Cannon [2], we find a sufficient condition for existence of the density function. We also show that this density function is proportional to the space derivative of the Green function of the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary condition at the moving boundary.
Consider a Langevin process, that is an integrated Brownian motion, constrained to stay on the nonnegative half-line by a partially elastic boundary at 0. If the elasticity coefficient of the boundary is greater than or equal to a critical value (0.16), bounces will not accumulate in a finite time when the process starts from the origin with strictly positive velocity. We will show that there exists then a unique entrance law from the boundary with zero velocity, despite the immediate accumulation of bounces. This result of uniqueness is in sharp contrast with the literature on deterministic s…
