This paper is concerned with a class K of models and an abstract notion of submodel <=. Experience in first order model theory has shown the desirability of finding a `monster model' to serve as a universal domain for K. In the original constructions of Jonsson and Fraisse, K was a universal class and ordinary substructure played the role of <=. Working with a cardinal lambda satisfying lambda^{< lambda}= lambda guarantees appropriate downward Lowenheim-Skolem theorems; the existence and uniqueness of a homogeneous-universal model appears to depend centrally on the amalgamation property. We make this apparent dependence more precise in this paper. The major innovation of this paper is the introduction of weaker notion to replace the natural notion of (K, <=)-homogeneous-universal model. Modulo a weak extension of ZFC (provable if V=L), we show that a class K obeying certain minimal restrictions satisfies a fundamental dichotomy: For arbitrarily large lambda, either K has the maximal number of models in power lambda or K has a unique chain homogenous-universal model of power lambda. We show that in a class with amalgamation this dichotomy holds for the notion of K-homogeneous-universal model in the more normal sense.
We present some results on the structure of line graphs of triangle-free graphs and a homogenization of the line graph of the universal homogeneous triangle-free graph in a finite relational language with arity 4. This result is relevant to the study of the relational complexity of structures defined by forbidden embeddings.
We discuss homogeneity and universality issues in the theory of abstract linear spaces, namely, structures with points and lines satisfying natural axioms, as in Euclidean or projective geometry. We show that the two smallest projective planes (including the Fano plane) are homogeneous and, assuming the continuum hypothesis, there exists a universal projective plane of cardinality $\aleph_1$ that is homogeneous with respect to its countable and finite projective subplanes. We also show that the existence of a generic countable linear space is equivalent to an old conjecture asserting that ever…
We consider derivations $\partial$ on Conway's field $\mathbf{No}$ of surreal numbers such that the ordered differential field $(\mathbf{No},\partial)$ has constant field $\mathbb{R}$ and is a model of the model companion of the theory of $H$-fields with small derivation. We show that this determines $(\mathbf{No},\partial)$ uniquely up to isomorphism, and that this structure is absolutely homogeneous universal for models of this theory with constant field $\mathbb{R}$.
We exhibit an equivalence between the model-theoretic framework of universal classes and the category-theoretic framework of locally multipresentable categories. We similarly give an equivalence between abstract elementary classes (AECs) admitting intersections and locally polypresentable categories. We use these results to shed light on Shelah's presentation theorem for AECs.
We construct a $\wedge$-homogeneous universal simple matroid of rank $3$, i.e. a countable simple rank~$3$ matroid $M_*$ which $\wedge$-embeds every finite simple rank $3$ matroid, and such that every isomorphism between finite $\wedge$-subgeometries of $M_*$ extends to an automorphism of $M_*$. We also construct a $\wedge$-homogeneous matroid $M_*(P)$ which is universal for the class of finite simple rank $3$ matroids omitting a given finite projective plane $P$. We then prove that these structures are not $\aleph_0$-categorical, they have the independence property, they admit a stationary in…
We initiate a systematic investigation of the abstract elementary classes that have amalgamation, satisfy tameness (a locality property for orbital types), and are stable (in terms of the number of orbital types) in some cardinal. Assuming the singular cardinal hypothesis (SCH), we prove a full characterization of the (high-enough) stability cardinals, and connect the stability spectrum with the behavior of saturated models. We deduce (in ZFC) that if a class is stable on a tail of cardinals, then it has no long splitting chains (the converse is known). This indicates that there is a clear not…
We give a syntactic characterization of abstract elementary classes (AECs) closed under intersections using a new logic with a quantifier for isomorphism types that we call structural logic: we prove that AECs with intersections correspond to classes of models of a universal theory in structural logic. This generalizes Tarski's syntactic characterization of universal classes. As a corollary, we obtain that any AEC with countable Löwenheim-Skolem number is axiomatizable in $\mathbb{L}_{\infty, ω} (Q)$, where $Q$ is the quantifier "there exists uncountably many".
We prove the existence of a separable approximately ultra-homogeneous Banach lattice $\mathfrak{BL}$ that is isometrically universal for separable Banach lattices. This is done by showing that the class of Banach lattices has the Amalgamation Property, and thus finitely generated Banach lattices form a metric Fraïssé class. Some additional results about the structural properties of $\mathfrak{ BL}$ are also proven.
Using a categorial version of Fraïssé's theorem due to Droste and Göbel, we derive a criterion for a comma-category to have universal homogeneous objects. As a first application we give new existence result for universal structures and for ω-categorical universal structures. As a second application we characterize the retracts of a large class of homogeneous structures, extending previous results by Bonato, Delić, Dolinka, and Kubiś. As a third application we show for a large class of homogeneous structures that their polymorphism clone is generated by polymorphisms of bounded arity, generaliz…
Building on previous work of the author, for each finite triangle-free graph $\mathbf{G}$, we determine the equivalence relation on the copies of $\mathbf{G}$ inside the universal homogeneous triangle-free graph, $\mathcal{H}_3$, with the smallest number of equivalence classes so that each one of the classes persists in every isomorphic subcopy of $\mathcal{H}_3$. This characterizes the exact big Ramsey degrees of $\mathcal{H}_3$. It follows that the triangle-free Henson graph is a big Ramsey structure.
Using Fra\" iss\' e theoretic methods we enrich the Urysohn universal space by universal and homogeneous closed relations, retractions, closed subsets of the product of the Urysohn space itself and some fixed compact metric space, $L$-Lipschitz map to a fixed Polish metric space. The latter lifts to a universal linear operator of norm $L$ on the Lispchitz-free space of the Urysohn space. Moreover, we enrich the Gurarij space by a universal and homogeneous closed subspace and norm one projection onto a $1$-complemented subspace. We construct the Gurarij space by the classical Fra\" iss\' e theo…
In 1959, P. Hall introduced the locally finite group $\mathcal{U}$, today known as Hall's universal group. This group is countable, universal, simple, and any two finite isomorphic subgroups are conjugate in $\mathcal{U}$. It can be explicitly described as a direct limit of finite symmetric groups. It is homogeneous in the model-theoretic sense since it is the Fraisse limit of the class of all finite groups. Since its introduction Hall's group, and several natural generalisations, have been widely studied. In this article we use a generalisation of Fraisse theory to construct a countable, univ…
Every clone of functions comes naturally equipped with a topology---the topology of pointwise convergence. A clone $\mathfrak{C}$ is said to have automatic homeomorphicity with respect to a class $\mathcal{C}$ of clones, if every clone-isomorphism of $\mathfrak{C}$ to a member of $\mathcal{C}$ is already a homeomorphism (with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence). In this paper we study automatic homeomorphicity-properties for polymorphism clones of countable homogeneous relational structures. To this end we introduce and utilize universal homogeneous polymorphisms. Next to two gen…

We define and study a metric independence notion in a homogeneous metric abstract elementary class with perturbations that is $d^p$-superstable (superstable wrt. the perturbation topology), weakly simple and has complete type spaces and we give a new example of such a class based on B. Zilber's approximations of Weyl algebras. We introduce a way to measure the dependence of a tuple $a$ from a set $B$ over another set $A$. We prove basic properties of the notion, e.g. that $a$ is independent of $B$ over $A$ in the usual sense of homogeneous model theory if and only if the measure of dependence …
We show that there is a countable universal abelian p-group for purity, i.e., a countable abelian p-group $U$ such that every countable abelian p-group purely embeds in $U$. This is the last result needed to provide a complete solution to Problem 5.1 of [Fuc15] below $\aleph_ω$. We introduce $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups, show that there is a universal abelian p-group for purity which is $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous, and completely characterize the countable $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups.
The universal homogeneous triangle-free graph, constructed by Henson and denoted $\mathcal{H}_3$, is the triangle-free analogue of the Rado graph. While the Ramsey theory of the Rado graph has been completely established, beginning with Erdős-Hajnal-Posá and culminating in work of Sauer and Laflamme-Sauer-Vuksanovic, the Ramsey theory of $\mathcal{H}_3$ had only progressed to bounds for vertex colorings (Komjáth-Rödl) and edge colorings (Sauer). This was due to a lack of broadscale techniques. We solve this problem in general: For each finite triangle-free graph $G$, there is a finite number $…
In this paper, we compute universal minimal flows of groups of automorphisms of uncountable $ω$-homogeneous graphs, $K_n$-free graphs, hypergraphs, partially ordered sets, and their extensions with an $ω$-homogeneous ordering. We present an easy construction of such structures, expanding the jungle of extremely amenable groups.
In this paper we address a problem posed by Shelah in 1999 to find a suitable notion for superstability for abstract elementary classes in which limit models of cardinality $μ$ are saturated. Theorem 1. Suppose that $\mathcal{K}$ is a $χ$-tame abstract elementary class with no maximal models satisfying the joint embedding property and the amalgamation property. Suppose $μ$ is a cardinal with $μ\geq\beth_{(2^{LS(\mathcal{K})+χ})^+}$. Let $M$ be a model of cardinality $μ$. If $\mathcal{K}$ is both $χ$-stable and $μ$-stable and satisfies the $μ$-superstability assumptions, then any two $μ$-limit …
Tame abstract elementary classes are a broad nonelementary framework for model theory that encompasses several examples of interest. In recent years, progress toward developing a classification theory for them have been made. Abstract independence relations such as Shelah's good frames have been found to be key objects. Several new categoricity transfers have been obtained. We survey these developments using the following result (due to the second author) as our guiding thread: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ If a universal class is categorical in cardinals of arbitrarily high cofinality, then it is catego…
We present three examples of countable homogeneous structures (also called Fraisse limits) whose automorphism groups are not universal, namely, fail to contain isomorphic copies of all automorphism groups of their substructures. Our first example is a particular case of a rather general construction on Fraisse classes, which we call diversification, leading to automorphism groups containing copies of all finite groups. Our second example is a special case of another general construction on Fraisse classes, the mixed sums, leading to a Fraisse class with all finite symmetric groups appearing as…
We derive a new sufficient condition for the existence of ω-categorical universal structures in classes of relational structures with constraints, augmenting results by Cherlin, Shelah, Chi, and Hubička and Nešetřil. Using this result we show that the hom-equivalence class of any countable weakly oligomorphic structure has up to isomorphism a unique model-complete smallest and greatest element, both of which are ω-categorical. As the main tool we introduce the category of constraint structures, show the existence of universal homogeneous objects, and study their automorphism groups. All constr…
We use ideas from topological dynamics (amenability), combinatorics (structural Ramsey theory) and model theory (Fra\" {i}ss\' e limits) to study closed amenable subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_\infty$ of a countable set, where $S_\infty$ has the topology of pointwise convergence. We construct $G$-invariant measures on the universal minimal flows associated with these groups $G$ in, moreover, an algorithmic manner. This leads to an identification of the generic elements, in the sense of being Martin-L\" of random, of these flows with respect to the constructed invariant measures. Along…
We prove that the Fraïssé limit of a Fraïssé class $\mathcal C$ is the (unique) countable structure whose isomorphism type is comeager (with respect to a certain logic topology) in the Baire space of all structures whose age is contained in $\mathcal C$ and which are defined on a fixed countable universe. In particular, the set of groups isomorphic to Hall's universal group is comeager in the space of all countable locally finite groups and the set of fields isomorphic to the algebraic closure of $\mathbb F_p$ is comeager in the space of countable fields of characteristic $p$.
A partial order is called semilinear iff the upper bounds of each element are linearly ordered and any two elements have a common upper bound. There exists, up to isomorphism, a unique countable existentially closed semilinear order, which we denote by S2. We study the reducts of S2, that is, the relational structures with the same domain as S2 all of whose relations are first-order definable in S2. Our main result is a classification of the model-complete cores of the reducts of S2. From this, we also obtain a classification of reducts up to first-order interdefinability, which is equivalent …
We prove that the automorphism group of a Fraïssé structure M equipped with a notion of stationary independence is universal for the class of automorphism groups of substructures of M. Furthermore, we show that this applies to certain homogeneous n-gons.
